This mission isn't nearly as dangerous as her past work, mapping underwater caves.

Gizmodo: "A Group of Astronauts Is Living Under the Sea for Two Weeks to Experience Life on Mars"

This article describes the mission, but does not provide any names. It does link to more information from Florida International University, the European Space Agency, and the NASA NEEMO Twitter account. (Dawn Kernagis has a Twitter account here.)

Interestingly, none of these entities have mentioned that there was almost a UNC connection to this mission. I guess I have the exclusive.

ORLANDO, FL. -- Fresh off another star-making performance in the 2016 NBA Summer League, former North Carolina basketball player J.P. Tokoto was handpicked by the Department of Marine Biology of the University of Central Florida to assist in a special undersea program designed to simulate conditions for the purposes of space exploration, but ultimately was not selected for the final team. Six specialists were selected for part or all of the 16-day mission in the Aquarius underwater laboratory, but none of them are known for dunking a basketball.

UCF officials expressed their disappointment. "J.P. Tokoto has continued to demonstrate the proper knowledge of atmospheric conditions required to elevate himself on a basketball court, and we were certain that he would be an asset to this very important multinational project," said John C. Hitt, President of the University of Central Florida. "Also, research missions rarely enjoy any kind of celebrity status, and you can't find a more famous celebrity than J.P. Tokoto."

Basketball commentators were similarly surprised by this decision. "While I'm not too familiar with marine biology, I know there is great value in the ability of aquatic creatures to camouflage themselves for protection," said Jay Bilas, ESPN college basketball analyst. "J.P. Tokoto would make a great explorer if he could disappear underwater as well as he disappears on the court."

Tokoto was strongly considered for a rare seventh spot in the team's rotation, but insiders stated that the final decision not to include him was made by the six people who were selected. "As a former undergrad at N.C. State and graduate student at Duke, I can tell you that J.P. Tokoto sucks, like so many other UNC players," said Dawn Kernagis, a researcher selected for the final 8 days of the mission. "Quite frankly, anyone who sucks that hard takes all of the oxygen out of the room and puts the rest of us in danger."

This is all PR whitewash. JP was never seriously considered. Anyone that dives knows that the sound of metal clanging - i.e. tapping a dive knife against a scuba tank - is one of the few sounds that travels well underwater. The sound of JP continuously bricking underwater shots off the rim was disturbing the researchers and the local fauna (and attracting the attention of any naval warships in the area).
