to me Brexit is more like

Today was John Bercow’s last day as Speaker. New election currently scheduled for next Monday I believe.

This has been planned for some months. He was entertaining to this outsider.

Well if that’s the case Boris, why can’t the rest of the country get in on THAT deal?

anyway, Boris is trying to persuade Northern Ireland by saying it will have the advantage of free trade with Europe as well as unfettered access to the rest of the UK. By that logic, sounds like Britain should remain in the EU.

One week until the election. Tories are polling 10 points ahead of Labour and may take a majority. Labour was building momentum until this week. We find out on Friday the 13th. That’s not ominous.

Interesting, today the Economist endorsed the Lib Dems acknowledging that they don’t have a chance. From the latest issue:

“ Voters face a stark choice between Boris Johnson, whose Tories promise a hard Brexit, and Jeremy Corbyn, whose Labour Party plans to “rewrite the rules of the economy” along radical socialist lines. Mr Johnson runs the most unpopular new government on record; Mr Corbyn is the most unpopular leader of the opposition. That leaves a low bar for the Liberal Democrats and, for all their faults, they clear it. Their economic approach is the most sensible; on climate change and social policy they strike the best balance between ambition and realism. Yet they will not win.”

If the UK had ranked choice voting, I think the Lib Dems would have a chance but many people think a vote for them is a wasted vote.

Also, the Lib Dem position that they will reverse Brexit no matter what is pretty indefensible. I mean, the nation voted for it. You can have the nation vote again (Labour position) if you want but to say you will not accept the will of the people is a tough stance to take electorally.
Why are you wasting time here when you could be wasting it by listening to the latest episode of the DBR Podcast?

Perhaps the nation has changed its mind, and a vote for Lib Dem is a vote to show that.

Having said that, I agree that Lib Dems are highly unlikely to win a flat-out majority. Their hope is to be a big enough bloc that any coalition government would have to join with them.

Will be curious to see what happens to DUP.

But they have not campaigned on "perhaps the nation has changed its mind." A campaign like that would say, "we must have a re-vote to see what the nation wants now that we have more information about what Brexit would look like. The LDs are campaigning on "no matter what the people say, there will be no Brexit." I have friends in the UK who have voted LD many times in the past who say they cannot consider a party that is choosing to ignore the will of the people.

The Lib Dems have 21 seats in the current Parliament. They are going to take maybe 15 seats in the new Parliament.

For those interested, polls do not close until 10pm GMT (5pm EST). If you are in line when the polls close, you still get to vote. So this should be interesting right about the time you settle down after dinner to watch.

Actually, I suspect we won't know anything for certain until 4 or 5am ET at the earliest. The big question is whether the Tories will get a majority or have to try to form a coalition government... and then whether they can get Boris' Brexit deal to pass the new Parliament.

    True.

Turnout is reportedly very heavy despite dismal weather.

There is a moratorium on reporting on pretty much anything until polls close... even turnout. Where did you see that?

Alan Moore, the comic genius behind Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Batman: The Killing Joke and a bunch of other stuff says he is voting today for the first time in like 40 years. And the video of his announcement is just a little bit scary.

I saw that part of that turnout is a really impressive showing by younger voters. It was at its highest ever in 2017, and registrations are up in 2019 over that year.

Yes it’s the Sun but they confirm the high turnout.

Wow! The Exit poll gives Boris a huge majority. 368 seats for the Tories (they need 326 for a majority) to just 191 for Labour. As I predicted earlier in the thread, the Lib Dems got trounced and will only have 13 seats in the next parliament...

...assuming the exit polls are correct.

If that holds, I wonder if it is more a referendum in favor of Boris or against Corbyn. Likely a bit of both. But Labour MPs outside of the big urban centers have been warning that Corbyn is poison to their chances.

We shall see if it holds form.
