    2016 Non-Men's Olympic International Basketball

I figure we can keep the Olympic/Team USA stuff in that thread and cover everything else here.

Duke commit Mikayla Boykin was invited to the U17 tryouts:
    http://www.usab.com/news-events/news...17-trials.aspx

She had to miss the U16s last summer so hopefully she gets to show what she can do and make the team.

The draws for the two U17 World Championships can be found here:
    http://www.fiba.com/world/u17/2016/n...-championships

Since everyone always likes to hear about which college coaches get recruiting advantages with the U18s/U19s:

Men: Shaka Smart assisted by Kevin Ollie and Mark Turgeon
Women: Suzie McConnell-Serio (Pitt) assisted by Kamie Etheridge (UNC-West) and Charlotte Smith (ex of the other UNC, now head coach at Elon)

For right now, there are no Duke connections.

Plenty of Duke targets for the U17 Boy's tryouts as Don Showalter tries to keep his perfect record in the upcoming World Championships.

In the category of other countries playing more international basketball than the United States, the South American Championship for Women started on Friday on the road to 2018 World Championship for Women qualification. Both this and the men's tournament are being held in Venezuela, which seems like a bad choice in retrospect.

    Day 3 recap:
    http://www.womensbasketball247.com/2...ay-3-may-22nd/

Three teams have qualified for the 2017 FIBA Americas Championship for Women as Brazil, Argentina, and Venezuela punched tickets. Argentina did so by beating Peru 89-15. Not a misprint. Canada will presumably also take their invitation while the United States will only do so if they do not win Olympic gold.

It is interesting to see the difference in approach by USA Basketball betwen the boys and girls teams at the youngest age group. For the U17 Girl's team, they are again allowing players to apply for open tryouts and they have accepted enough players to make a 150 player group for the initial pool:
    http://www.usab.com/news-events/news...17-trials.aspx
    Roster:
    http://www.usab.com/basketball/media...-alphapdf.aspx

They also do the skills work and provide additional coaching at these tryouts, while the boys' side of things usually does that with an extra camp in the fall:
    http://www.usab.com/news-events/news...t-coaches.aspx

  8. #8
The USA U18 Girls were a few players short for tryouts so three more were added:
    http://www.usab.com/news-events/news...eature-30.aspx

They also announced the coaches helping out on the court during that process:
    http://www.usab.com/news-events/news...t-coaches.aspx

Coaching willingness to help at the level can lead to a chance to be one of the assistant coaches later.

At the South American Championship for Women, the semifinals are set with Brazil-Argentina and Venezuela-Colombia for some neighbor rivalries. Ecuador-Paraguay is the important game on Wednesday as the winner still has a chance at joining the other four teams for the Americas-wide tournament next year.

  9. #9
Javin already revealed that he would try out for the U18 team when he was invited, but the whole list was made official today:
    http://www.usab.com/news-events/news...-athletes.aspx
    http://www.usab.com/mens/u18/roster.aspx

Of course there are also some recruiting targets on there. This team will compete in the FIBA Americas Championship to qualify for next summer's U19 World Championship.

At the South American Championship for Women, Paraguay beats Ecuador to give themselves a chance to qualify for next summer. Brazil and Venezuela won their semifinals.

  10. #10
Mikayla Boykin is now at the tryouts. Best of luck to her as 143 players need to be cut to 12 over the course of the weekend.

In South America, the final ranking of the four teams has been determined as it was no surprise that Brazil won the women's championship again. Venezuela was second and Colombia beat Argentina for third place.

  11. #11
Mikayla survives the first cut down to 101 players.

According to a member of the media attending, the roster might not be fully set at the conclusion of tryouts on Monday morning and will instead be set closer to the tournament.

  12. #12
Mikayla also makes the next cut down to 73:
    http://www.usab.com/basketball/media...und-73pdf.aspx

It's a busy weekend in Colorado Springs with the U18 Girls team tryouts also taking place.

  13. #13
Mikayla survives another cut to 41:
    http://www.usab.com/basketball/media...und-41pdf.aspx

  14. #14
Mikayla did not make the cut down to 18 for the U17 team:
    http://www.usab.com/news-events/news...announced.aspx

They will keep all 18 for a little while before making the final decision.

There will be no Duke representation on the U18 Girls team either as they have settled on a roster:
    http://www.usab.com/news-events/news...eam-named.aspx

  15. #15
The long process to decide the U17 Girl's team is finally over:
    http://www.usab.com/news-events/news...eam-named.aspx

A lot of uncommitted players are involved, so who knows if there will be a future Blue Devil?

  16. #16
It is always good to take a look at the court coaches for the youth national teams. That's often a stepping stone to one of the assistant coaching positions and so on up the ladder. It is also a way of seeing some under the radar coaches that may be perceived to be future names by other coaches. The U17 team has an NAIA head coach. Chris Mack is the big name of the U18 bunch with NAIA and JC head coaches also involved.
    http://www.usab.com/news-events/news...urt-coach.aspx
    http://www.usab.com/news-events/news...t-coaches.aspx

U17 tryouts are taking place now.

Lindsey and Belarus started with a 71-60 win over Nigeria. Lindsey had 11 points in 36 minutes. In the loss, ex-Texas A&M player Adaora Elonu had 19 points and 7 rebounds and ex-Florida player Ndidi Madu had 10 points and 7 rebounds.
    Boxscore:

The USA news is coming fast as the U17 Boy's team has now been finalized:
    http://www.usab.com/news-events/news...finalized.aspx

Javin is starting tryouts for the U18 team and there were a few last minute changes:
    http://www.usab.com/news-events/news...-to-begin.aspx
    He gets a mention here:
    http://www.usab.com/news-events/news...r-preview.aspx

Lindsey and Belarus were off today. In the games that were played today, Nigeria beat South Korea late, Spain beat China, Turkey beat Argentina, and France beat New Zealand.

If you want more detailed updates than those on this tournament, I am writing about it on Monique Currie's website and you can find the first installment here:

Lindsey had 13 points and 7 assists in 37 minutes in a shock Belarus loss to South Korea 66-65. They win the group on tiebreakers and will face China with an Olympic bid on the line on Friday. Yelena Leuchanka had 10 points and 9 rebounds and the other former collegiate player on the team, ex-South Carolina player Tatyana Troina had 11 points.
    Boxscore:
    http://www.fiba.com/oqtwomen/2016/15...ore_statistics

Cuba beat New Zealand, Spain beat Venezuela, and Turkey beat Cameroon. That leaves these quarterfinal matchups with winners headed to Rio and losers fighting for the last spot:
    France vs Argentina
    Turkey vs Cuba
    Belarus vs China
    Spain vs South Korea
