35 years.
Watching monday night football in a crowded bar when cosell delivered the bad news.. couldn't believe what i'd heard so i called a friend at a radio station with AP news access...she answered the phone, crying. I knew it was true.
I couldn't go back to my (at that time packaging engineer) job for almost a week...his death didn't change my life, but his life sure did...
sail on, john....sail on...

A very sad day, remember it well.
My ship was conducting a port visit to Sasebo, Japan when I heard the news. A very sad day.

A sad day indeed -- and one of those memorable instances when sportscasters became news broadcasters. Similar to Jim McKay reporting on the hostage crisis and murder of Israeli athletes from the 1972 Munich Olympics, and Al Michaels and the ABC Sports crew covering the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake live from the World Series in Candlestick Park.
