Barry Svrluga on $100 Million Contracts for Pitchers

Duke grad Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post has a major article up on pitchers who get $100 million contracts. He's got the data and it's a big risk.

Thought this was a very well done article when I saw it in the Pilot this am.
    Good link, sage.

Lightning in a bottle sometimes. I'm just hoping Tigs can keep Price a while. Max is gone, sure, but he showed signs of fatigue this year. He'll do better as a cub or cardinal.

It's of particular interest here in the DC area because the Nationals' Jordan Zimmermann is in the last year of his contract, and he'll be looking for one of these 9-figure contracts. The Nats have a tough decision to make about what they'll offer him, and they're likely to move out soon, in order to try and avoid him getting on the open market after next season.

Max Scherzer rolled the dice and probably will do unbelievably well, but I think his rejection of the Tigers' $144 million offer could have been utterly disastrous.
Especially since he really likes the team and the city. Great teammate.

On the plus side, sure, he might end up getting $180 million, who knows, but $144 million was also "generational" money.

On the down side, had he hurt his arm this year, there's no telling how much his value would have fallen. Scott Boras can be "credited" for this...

Max is a mizzou boy from birth. He wants to go home as, does his mizzou fiancee. Yet my bet is he'll be a cub next year.

Yeah they all say they love Detroit but there has to be serious discontent after these past few years. So much talent, money, fan fervor just pathetically melting under hot lights.

The Cubs are based in Missouri?
I really should follow baseball more closely.

You can easily see Wrigley from the top of the arch. (I once saw Long's Peak from the top of the Minneapolis Marriott--it was extremely clear and the earth was particularly flat that day.)

Hardy har har, Scherzer may want to play in front of mo relatives but cubs have plenty of $$$ to toss his way.

I think there's a lot more disappointment than there is discontent.

Their bullpen just killed them this year. They made a few moves before the season to bolster it, and almost all of them failed. Nathan as closer was a disaster.
(Thanks for the wonders of DirecTV, I watched just about every Tigers game this year).

Yes, the Cubbies are going to be casting about vast sums of money, of that I have no doubt.
