Brown Brothers has been in business a long time and has a good reputation. (I lived in Durham for 40+ years.)

In South Durham Steve's Plumbing used to be good - about 10 years ago!
Just having been without hot water for six days, I've been through four plumbers -- three lying jerks and Cary Plumbing.
Note to plumbers: When I call on Thursday and explain on the phone that it's on the finished third floor and ask if you can do it today, don't show up and tell me you hate doing third floors, the site is too complex and full of obstructions and raise the rates by 33-50%, or that you can't get to it until Tuesday. I will pay you a fair rate, but $300/hour for 2.5 hours is too much for something I really could do myself in that amount of time or less (and started to do, but didn't want to chance a third floor leak). Note to builder: Don't put a water heater on the third floor!
Cary Plumbing came first thing yesterday morning and installed the new water heater in less than an hour and a half, and called it a very easy job. And at a reasonable rate (compared to the other guys, anyway). I've used them several times before and they've been very prompt, courteous, enjoyable, and knowledgeable, and have completed the job quickly and neatly.
Their website says that Durham is in their service area.
Watch as this thread goes down the drain...
We had a good experience with PlumbV (for a 3rd floor water heater, devil84, so I feel your pain).
We actually had the plumbers' boss right down there at Duke Law School for three years...
