Have there been a lot of new posters here recently since the migration to SBNation? If so, it might be helpful to briefly explain the pitchfork system to them.

Tried to give you sporks (cuz you beat me to this one) and send you a PM but found this instead:

"Mike Corey has exceeded their stored private messages quota and cannot accept further messages until they clear some space."

IOW, your momma's telling you to clean up your room, young man .

If the house buys rounds 2-4, sure.

I had hoped to tap the community to provide an effervescent discussion of this particular feature of our pub. Apparently we've hopped away from the full-bodied discussion and strayed from the purity laws set forth in the Decorum and Guidelines. Regardless of this prohibition, the witt around here highlights the flavor of our community to our new readers.

This thread conversation is very tasteful, though not very fulfilling.

That's worthy of rewards far beyond the reputation points system (or food points)-that should be worth about a million beer points.

Seriously, devil84 and I just finished (started?) an off-line discussion about this and I promised I'd attempt, in 16 ounces or less, to 'splain the system here and get this discussion back on track.

    1. If you're new here, you start off with 1 trident and an unknown number of points.
    2. For each approve/positive comment you receive via another poster clicking on the red/green icon in the lower left corner of your post, you are awarded "points." The more pitchforks you have personally, the more your comments are worth to that poster.
    3. Conversely, for each disapprove/negative comment you receive from another poster, you have points subtracted from your total. The posters with more pitchforks are also worth more "debits" to your account, too, should you incur their wrath.
    4. You earn one additional pitchfork for (approximately) each 200 points you are credited.
    5. You earn one additional flame for each bundle (100? 200?) of negative points you, umm, earn.
    6. Mods' comments are worth even more + or - points to your "account." And yes, some are more disagreeable and cantankerous than others (and that is a direct quote from a mod who will remain forever anonymous ) . Others, like devil84 for example, are kind, loving, sweet, generous, fair, reasonable and qualify for many more accolades than I can possibly list (and asked me to reply here so what else can I say?), and spend a whole lot of their time policing the forums for malcontents and troublemakers and other inane posters like myself, trying to enforce the guidelines.

Hope that covers most of the questions new posters might have. Oh, and BTW, effective January, 2013, your comments are not anonymous so be careful what you type.

PS-beer bribes don't work either-I've tried them, too.

And if a nitwit tries to tell you that a particular post is "over the top with elitism" and if said nitwit has flames instead of pitchforks, it does jack nothing to your tally and will only make you laugh at that particular nitwit and reaffirm your feelings of elitism and pride, snobbish or not when it comes to Duke.

    Just a scenario to ponder....

This is all very informative. Thank you.
But what I really want to know is... Why does pitchfork 6,7,8, etc. appear to have a shadow, while 1-5 do not?

Information needed to make my life complete!

I don't know the answer to that one and not even going to venture a guess. Devil84 or -jk might have an explanation but I sure don't.

They're fatter and cast a broader shadow.

    Not polite to ask, really.
