A sequel to one of the great summer box office hits of all time is finally in the works for the summer of 2015. Already nailed down the July 3 release date

No Will Smith this time (although they are still trying for a cameo), but Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman have signed up to reprise their characters from the 1996 movie. Roland Emmerich will again direct. This one is set 20 years after the first one. The only bad news is that it's essentially a two-parter ... the story will be wrapped up in an Independence Day 3.
Something like this:

Will they still call it Independence Day? ID2? ID5?
Elsewhere I wrote that they should combine this project with Garry Marshall's all-star holiday romantic comedies (Valentine's Day, New Year's Eve). Just imagine...
Former President Thomas Whitmore (Bill Pullman) has returned home from a busy weekend in Los Angeles in which his daughter Patricia (Mae Whitman) has married an awkward and inexplicably famous actor (Michael Cera). He hasn't been on a date in the twenty years since his wife (Mary McDonnell) perished in the alien attack, and does not know how to react when a quirky neighbor (Kyra Sedgwick) keeps inviting him over for tea or lemonade. Meanwhile, Netflix CEO David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) is trying to rekindle the romance with his equally busy wife Constance (Margaret Colin), a political consultant. He gets unprompted advice from his father Julius (Judd Hirsch), and decides to set him up with a local TV producer (Olympia Dukakis). Will love fill the geriatric air?
Meanwhile, the Vice President (Robert Loggia) has asked the NSA chief (Adam Baldwin) to work closely with a defense contractor scientist (Christina Hendricks) in completing an invisible planetary forcefield system composed entirely of alien technology. Do sparks fly?
Alicia Casse (Lisa Jakub) is estranged from her brothers and living on a commune in New Houston. Traumatized by the alien invasion, she has convinced herself that her deceased father (Randy Quaid) is still alive, and just hiding out in Canada. When a reporter (Ashton Kutcher) finds her, he pretends to blend in so that he may eventually convince her to rejoin civilization. But he never planned to fall in love.
Finally, Jasmine Dubrow (Vivica A. Fox) is now a wedding planner in Los Angeles, an odd turn of events after her then-fiance Steven (Will Smith) left her at the altar for parts unknown. She completed the arrangements for Patricia's wedding and is taking a mini-vacation with her best friend (Michelle Pfeiffer), a psychic. When her friend is disturbed by alien messages and believes in their imminent return, should Jasmine try to notify Mr. Whitmore? And what about the new florist (Jamie Foxx, willing to accept a supporting role) who keeps flirting with her?
Him?

Sounds better than anything by David Goyer or Orci/Kurtzman.
Nice. There are a few other in-jokes there, some better than others.
Depends on who's directing. If it's Roland Emmerich, look for the attack about 30 minutes in. If it's Garry Marshall, then he'll first have to introduce Hector Elizondo, Lea Michele, Jon Bon Jovi, Robert De Niro, Jennifer Garner, Common, Josh Duhamel, Rita Wilson, Jamie Kennedy, Queen Latifah, Topher Grace, Gwen Stefani, Demián Bichir, Blake Lively, Aaron Eckhart, Fergie, George Lopez, Kiernan Shipka, Asa Butterfield, Marion Cotillard, Taylor Kitsch, Taylor Lautner, Taylor Swift, Ludacris, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Kate Olsen, Mary-Louise Parker, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Jessica Chastain, Jessica Lange, Jessica Paré, Jessica Simpson, and the entire cast of Grey's Anatomy. There may not be time for aliens.
I can't spork him but someone take care of Brevity for his work in this thread. The post with all the actors names is sheer brilliance!!
-Jason "the people behind Pacific Rim, which is suffering from poor tracking and interest right now, probably wish they had named their flick Independence Day 2" Evans
