    2013 International Basketball Thread

As with any summer, there will be plenty of National Team action. While we may no longer have a direct link to the head coach of our national team, there are still likely to be plenty of present, former, and future Blue Devils representing their countries. I figured that a catch-all thread could be used as some teams try to win youth championships and others vie for continental supremacy in anticipation of the World Championships next summer since my other thread seems to be more commonly used for players on their professional club teams.

I had been looking for this first item for a little while now, but apparently my Finnish skills are a little rusty. Alex Murphy is listed on a training camp roster for Finland's U20 team as they will once again be playing in the B Division of the European U20s in July. This training camp starts in June and Alex will probably be expected to be one of the two main stars again as some new players join a few veterans as a number of players from last year's squad are now too old to be on the team. Of the 25 players, only Alex and two players based in Spain do not play in Finland. Here is the article with the list:

The list of players who will try out for the US Women's U19 team later this month has been released. Alexis Jones is there representing current Duke players and incoming freshmen Oderah Chidom and Kendall Cooper are also on the list. The 33 players will eventually be cut down to 12 as they will play in the World Championships in July. There is one more Duke tie as Katie Meier is the head coach of the team.

    Here is the roster:

Thanks for posting this. Poking around the USA Basketball site, I didn't realize there was a national under 16 team ... apparently this is the 3d one we've had, and Quinn Cook played on a prior one. The roster right now is made up of guys who are in the 9th and 10th grades, including a ninth grader from Gatesville NC, and there will be tryouts at the end of the month to select the final team that goes to Uruguay for a FIBA Americas tournament.

I think about Michael Jordan not making the h.s. varsity as a 10th grader and being relegated to j.v. ... and now we are shipping 9th graders off to Uruguay ...

It was uncommon for sophomores to play varsity ball during that era. It would have been more of a story if a 5'9"" guard had been put on the varsity of the really good team (playoff contender the year before with both starting guards returning). Jordan's coach did pull one 6'7'' guy out of the 10th grade though since the varsity lacked height. Jordan was a superstar on the JV but it was the norm for 9th and 10th graders to play JV with the varsity being 11th and 12th graders. (Much like freshmen couldn't play college ball. Arbitrary, but customary.) Though, of course, this really supports your comment about how much the game and the approach to the game have changed.

Another day, another USA squad announcement.

This time, it is the Women's University Games tryouts, which will include both Tricia Liston and Haley Peters. The tryouts are about a week away with the actual games in July.

The team actually performed worse Jordan's junior and senior years, when he was varsity, than it did when he was not on varsity.

Marty Pocius is still recovering from surgery after his latest injury, but Lithuania's new coach believes that he will be available for national team duty in the summer. This may be Marty's big chance to play well for his next contract.

Olek Czyz has been named to the 21 player preliminary squad for Poland for the upcoming Eurobasket. Olek is still in the middle of his first professional season in Rome at Danny Ferry's old team.

The roster included Marcin Gortat and a few active NCAA players.

Two more players have been added to the Women's University Games list to increase the ACC participation. Both that team and the U19 team will have final rosters by the end of the week as they start trials on Thursday. Here is the most recent article:
    http://www.usabasketball.com/womens/...nvitees_2.html

Also in USA Basketball news, there was a change on the coaching staff of the Men's U19 team, which also increases the amount of ACC participation. No roster has been named for that team yet as their tryouts are still a month away.

There was both good and bad news this morning for Duke players as the two rosters were announced.

Alexis Jones made the U19 roster, but Kendall Cooper and Oderah Chidom did not. Here is the roster:

This is great news, thanks for sharing. I am extremely optimistic about next season and playing in the international games will provide invaluable experience for Liston and Jones.

Wilson is the consensus top recruit in the class of 2014. A good opportunity for AJ to get in her ear and impress on her the joys of playing for Duke.

135 players? There must be a future Duke player or two on the U16 Girls' tryout list, right?

    Here is the article:
    http://www.usabasketball.com/womens/...ls_roster.html
Here is the full list (feel old as there could be an athlete born in 2000 representing the United States):

I wonder what other kind of personnel are in the gym during these giant tryouts. Poor Brian Robinson from North Carolina's Bishop McGuiness is the only one of the eight named staff that is a man.

Marty Pocius was one of 15 players named to the Eurobasket preliminary squad for Lithuania and is expected to be healthy enough to play by then.

Here is the article from Lithuania's Basketball Federation:

Here is an English language article:

The squad lists includes three current NBA players and two more whose draft rights are held by NBA teams. Overall it is a reasonably strong squad as the team is slowly integrating some younger players into the team for the next cycle of international tournaments.

After creating this thread, I thought it would be good to add a little context to what is happening this summer:

While the two United States senior teams will not have significant action this summer (now down to one without a coach, unless Geno decides to take a page out of Coach K's book), every other major national program has plenty to play for this summer as they try to qualify for next year's World Championships. Both American teams have already earned their bids after their Olympic triumphs. Spain is hosting the Men's Tournament and Turkey is hosting the Women's tournament, but both teams are still fighting hard at the European Championships this summer in a bid to make their teams as strong as possible next summer. On the other hand, the United States has rejected bids to the two FIBA Americas tournaments (the Women's one is during the stretch run of the WNBA season).

There is still plenty of USA basketball action this summer with the youth national teams. The U16 Boys head to Uruguay in mid-June followed by the U16 Girls in Mexico as they try to qualify out of the Americas for the next World U17 Championships. The two U19 teams try to extend American dominance with the Men competing from late June through early July in the Czech Republic and the Women in Lithuania in late July. Two teams will also be in action in the World University Games in Russia in July.

Almost all of the continental competition fields are set with only a few spots still up for grabs. On the Men's side, Asia will determine its champions first in early August in the Philippines. Oceania is next in mid-August although it is basically a formality for Australia and New Zealand to pass through. Africa follows in late August in Ivory Coast with the Americas starting right near the end of August and stretching into mid-September in Venezuela. Europe will be the last to crown a champions as their tournament runs through most of September in Slovenia. On the women's side, Europe will go first, running from the middle of June to the end of the month in France. The Oceania championships will run concurrently with the Men's tournament with a pair of games between Australia and New Zealand for one slot. Africa (in Mozambique) and the Americas (in Mexico) will play in late September with the Americas not even having their qualifiers yet. Asia will not start its championship until late October in Thailand.

In less than a week, the coaches managed to whittle down the list of players to give us 12 girls for the U16 team that will soon head to the U16 Americas championships in Cancun.
