    JWill narcs on 2002 Bulls

I don't think this will improve his popularity much:

    http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-ba...3860--nba.html

Jason reveals in an interview that some Bulls players got high before games. Sounds like the interviewer extracted some salacious statements somewhat out of context from an extensive interview about JWill's experiences in his too brief NBA career. Could set up an interesting war of words with Jalen Rose.

I find this use of the word narc highly salacious and troubling. Jay isn't "ratting" anyone out. He isn't providing any law enforcement any information, he didn't intend to out specific individuals to the media. He was merely relaying his story about a time a decade in past of which there may be one player still in the league, Jamal Crawford. If anything, the coaches should be ashamed they let that crap go on, can you imagine what Thibs would do on the current Bulls?

Besides, it's not as if people didn't know:

It breaks my heart for a bunch of NBA guys that someone is saying that some of them may have smoked some weed 10 years ago.

No, wait, it doesn't break my heart at all.

In other news, Led Zeppelin may have been drunk on stage once or twice. Robert Downey, Jr may have done cocaine back in the 80s. And Lenny Kravitz may have smoked a blunt...although he never inhaled.

First off, the NYTimes article that spawned this bit of juice is really interesting. All Duke fans should read it. There is a lot of stuff in there I had never heard, especially the stuff about his post-accident brushes with suicide. There is a brief passage where Chris Collins talks about Jason returning to Durham after his rookie year and literally playing like a man among boys against the assembled Duke players - so good Collins says it gave him the chills.

But, back to the fun, Deadspin attempted to guess which of those 2002-03 Bulls was most likely to have smoked weed before the game - pretty funny.

Needless to say, most of his former teammates aren't too happy about his comments:

Especially Fred Hoiberg, current coach of Iowa State!

Tyson Chandler isn't too happy about it either:

Looks like Jason broke a little NBA player omerta, but who cares? I guarantee he's not lying. If Gary McClain did coke before a Final Four game, is it so hard to think that an NBA player would be high before a game, especially when many estimates put the % of NBA players who actively smoke above 50?

Some of the comments in those Deadspin articles are hilarious. My favorite, in response to JWill's statement that teammates were asking "Do you smell popcorn?":

Of course it smelled like popcorn. The smoke from Marshall's blunt heated up his cornrows.

I doubt JWill gives a toot. One thing you learn at Duke is "who cares what anyone else thinks?" There's something to being maligned as a team and school that toughens people up, and Jay's far more serious travails have only added to a sense of self.

It's only upsetting to those who have done wrong. Jason didn't intend to provoke anything by mentioning this and brought it up only to describe the looseness of the NBA lifestyle as opposed to college. He came from a school of excellence and character to a team and league where it didn't matter at the time. Although it was not his intention to out anyone, in my opinion this kind of thing should come to light. Bad behavior should be called out even if you may get ridiculed. It shows character.
