    Athletic Facilities Improvements

I received an email from Duke today. It contained a video about the proposed new athletic facilites. I share it here.

It looks like the same vid that was posted in the previous thread on this subject. I really wish they could figure out a way to keep those big shade trees off the concourse on the east (away) side. On those hot early season afternoons, they provide a shady spot to retreat to during halftime that is always crowded. It looks like from the vid that those trees will be gone. Perhaps they could put the concession stands closer to the stadium and then they could use the rooftops of those stands for group event areas or something, and then keep the trees.

"Bricked to match the rest of the campus"?

Interesting phrasing used in that article in the N&O linked today about improvements to Wallace Wade Stadium. I would guess that "bricked to resemble" the architecture of the rest of Duke's campus may not have meant a fond homage to Bio-Sci, the Law School, or the wonderful old steam plant between East and West campuses, much less Baldwin Auditorium and the rest of the nice Queen Anne style of architecture employed there. Perhaps the article meant "faced" in the style with some of the Hillsborough stone. Personally, I always liked the simple blue and white paint on the old concrete facing which somehow became the bland anonymous beige later on.

Very pleased by the plans to get the stadium project essentially done by the 2014 season, however, and the whole idea of refurbishment over-all. But maybe not brick?

I can't wait to get the track out of there. I am so tired of people referring to it as a high school stadium.

I think the cream portion at the bottom may be "bricked", it is hard to tell. And the press box is "bricked":

But only, the front ring near the field:

Also looks like there will also be a complete ring enclosing the stadium now (I don't think there is a full ring at present) and that would be bricked.

I assume that the brick they are referring to is the Duke Brick, which has been increasingly used in conjunction with, and as a replacement for the Hillsborough stone. Most (if not all) Duke buildings built within the last 10-15 years have included it. It's the brown brick you see on Wilson, Ambler Tennis Stadium, and Schwartz-Butters, not the red brick of Bio Sci, Hudson, or East Campus.

Sounds like everything will start Fall '13 so long as donations keep pace
