New ACC Reference for Comparing Players

Hey, just wanted to point out a new feature on my website that I thought might provoke some discussion. Basically, I took a system used in baseball, and translated it to basketball. The system looks at the stats for players and devises a similarity score.

Here is the full description, including how the similarity scores are calculated.

So what do you think? Thoughts on the scoring system?

Obviously, the biggest problem is that I have data only back to the 2003-4 season, so if you have any suggestions on how to collect that data, please send me a PM. I tried to contact the email address on Charlie's Board, but the email bounced.

There may have been some confusion, so here is a link to all current players, just click on the player's name to see their player page.

    Thanks for the clarificatiion.

I got it to work using Mozilla Firefox, but failed on Internet Explorer probably due to use of pop-uos.

As you say, there is a lack of data but I found it pretty interesting, with the comparable players though most recently completed season (Fr-Soph-Jr) perhaps more indicative than just overall comparable players, until there is more data.

Paulus thru Soph: Singletary-Rice-Hamilton-Jack-Hammonds versus overall: Todd Galloway, Isaiah Swann, Anthony Harris, John Gilchrist, not sure which is more accurate comparison

Scheyer: Jerel Allen, Markus Sailes, Wayne Ellington, Michael Drum

Nelson: Jason Rich, Nik Caner-Medley, Jeremis Smith, KC Rivers, James Mays

Henderson: Mamadi Diane, Sam Perry, Julius Powell, Marcus Ginyard

Lance: Deon Thompson, Julius Powell, Sam Perry, Jimmy Graham

Zoubek: David Weaver, L. Mikaslauskas, RaSean Dickey, A Aminu, Kyle Visser

McClure: James Mays, Jimmy Graham, Al Thornton, Travis Garrison

Pocius: Michael O'Donnell??(NC ST 2004 Fr yr only), Nigel Munson, Cameron Betterman, Paco Diaw and Andrew Wilson

Lawson: Crittenden, Vasquez, Paulus, Chris Paul, Ish Smith

Ellington: Scheyer, Hammonds, Vasquez, Atsur, Rice

Frasor: Vasquez, Clemente, Ish Smith, Felton, Zam Frederick

Green: Braqndan Wright, M. Diane, Luol Deng, Trevor Booker, Gary Forbes

Ginyard thru Soph: Evtimov, Sam Perry, Jason Rich, Brian Asbury versus Lee Melchionni overall??

QT: Frasor, Ish Smith, Vasquez, Todd Galloway, Denis Clemente

Alex: Kevin Swinton, Jimmy Graham, Al Thornton, Cheick Diakite, David Weaver

Deon: Lance Thomas, Ryan Reid, Julius Powell, Sam Perry, M. Diane

Tyler thru Soph: Josh McRoberts, Alexander Johnson, KC Rivers, Deron Washingotn, McCauley, Costner versus overall: Sean May, Dudley, Coleman Collins, Mike Jones, Rey Terry

Josh McRoberts thry Soph: Ibekwe, Shelden Williams, Hansbrough, Cedric Simmons, Deron Washington versus overall: Luke Schenscher??, Sharron Ford, Visser, Dickey, Gist.

Interesting how UNC fans are projecting greatness for Deon while Duke fans have low expectations for Lance, and I have not heard anybody euphoric over Jimmy Graham or Sam Perry/Julius Powell, Ryan Reid either, though UVA has high hopes for more consitency from Mamadi Diane.

Looks like Danny Green has pretty good company.

Good points, so keep in mind that overall comparable players will likely be lower than those through the same class. Overall will look at the players current stats and compare to all players career stats, so Josh McRoberts 2 year career closely matches Luke Schenscher's 4 year career. Where as McRoberts 2 year career matches Hansbrough's 2 year career.

I would love to compare across decades, it would really be fascinating, but I have to work with the data I have right now.
