    Some Trivia

There was an article today in a reputable publication about teams that have defeated the NCAA men's basketball champion and runner up in the same season. It happened to Duke and Butler last year and Duke and Arizona in 2001. Duke has accomplished the feat once. It's occurred more frequently than I would have guessed, if for no other reason than the improbability in the overlap of schedules, starting from the expansion of the tournament in 1985. Without looking up the answers, my questions for you wizards out there are:

    1) How many times has the feat occurred in the 64+ team era?
    2) Which teams accomplished the exploit in 2010 and 2001?
    3) In what season did Duke accomplish the deed?

    #2: Maryland?

    3) pretty sure the answer is 1993, when we beat UNC and Michigan during the season. 2) Georgetown was the team that beat us and Butler in 2010 and Stanford beat us and 'Zona in 2001.

Not sure on #1, so I will guess...6.

Off the top of my head I can only think of one answer. Georgetown beat both Duke and Butler last year I believe. Other than that, I'd just be guessing!

EDIT: Oops too slow to post!

It happened twice in '85. Both Syracuse and St. Johns beat both Georgetown and Villanova.

The 1993 head-to-head standings among Duke, unc and Michigan went thusly:

    Duke 2-1
    unc 2-2
    Michigan 1-2

That said, didn't Michigan vacate the entire 1993 season?

Correct on all except the last one. Nicely done. The answer is 11 (10 separate years.) That's 40% of the time which seems extraordinary.

Impressive memory of 1985. Yes Michigan did vacate 1993.

If there's another year in which it happened, I'd guess 1988, with some other Big 8 team beating both Kansas and Oklahoma. Perhaps Mizzou?

According to the article, 1985 was the only year with two. Kansas St. beat Kansas and Oklahoma in 1988.
