This shouldn't be in the top 10 and I'm not even sure it's a sports movie since there is only about 10 minutes of football (soccer) in the movie, but I just saw Green Street Hooligans. And while there is lots of cursing and violence (which I personally don't mind) it gives a very accurate look at football hooligans in England and how brutal and trivial their fighting often is over "the beautiful game."

As a Wake grad, I have to add Brian's Song.

I thought We Are Marshall was really well done. For me it would be up there with Hoosiers, Field of Dreams and Remember the Titans.

Last year I finally got around to watching Hoosiers. What a disappointment that was. I love Gene Hackman as an actor but his backstory was boring. Why not focus on Jimmy Chitwood? Or Dennis Hopper? Or for heaven's sake, Dennis Hopper's kid, that would have made a much better movie. Barbara Hershey's role was distracting and unnecessary. I give the movie a passing grade but no way is it one of the Top 10 all time sports movies.

In no particular order, I've come up with these

    Bull Durham
    Brian's Song
    The Bad News Bears
A League of Their Own - OK, maybe not the greatest movie but it's got the greatest sports movie quote - "There's no crying in baseball!"
    Raging Bull
    Rudy
    Field of Dreams
    Pat and Mike
    The Jericho Mile
    We Are Marshall

mmmm... Will "Blindside" find a place on this list?

The several Bull Durham mentions reminded me to remember Lawrence "Crash" Davis to DBR. He was the former Duke second-baseman who's name was made famous by Kevin Costner. Crash was a true gentleman, owning an infectious sense of humor...and he LOVED Duke. To hear him reminisce about those bygone days and what it was like to play for Duke and Jack Coombs and then the Philadelphia Athletics and the great Connie Mack, was priceless. Here's a link to the 2001 New York Times tribute at his death. http://www.nytimes.com/2001/09/04/sp...l?pagewanted=1

I'm going to find the DVD tonight.

Wasn't this already a thread at some time? Maybe a Jason Evans one?

Yep, here are the four prelims...

BTW, the "30 seconds between search" function is ridiculous.

I loved The Blind Side, but it was way less sports-centered than I expected it to be.

No votes for Glory Road or Coach Carter??

After relection, I will circle back from my original list to completely agree with you. What a great movie, especially if you grew up during this time...which I did. Great story, GREAT tunes, and plenty of very real emotions. Thanks, Heelkiller1 (love the handle) for the wake-up call. All the best to you in Iraq. Thank you for all you do for us every day!!

Glad to see some love for Victory. Yes, its an unbelievable, mostly poorly acted, derivative mess. But where else do you get to see Bobby Moore, Pele and Sly Stallone on the same team beating a bunch of commie nazis in a stadium with piped in crowd noise a la the Dean Dome. Nowhere, I tell ya. Just confirms John Huston's talent that even though its so cornball, you can't help cheering as the allies pull out all their flair and put goals past the germans.

It was almost exactly 2 years ago that we did this. There was a lengthy nomination process followed by the 4 preliminary rounds of poll voting identified above. After those polls we came up with 11 "finalists." They were...

    • Field of Dreams
    • Hoosiers
    • Bull Durham
    • The Natural
    • Rocky I
    • A League of Their Own
    • Caddyshack
    • Hoop Dreams
    • Rudy
    • Bad News Bears
    • Chariots of Fire

We had a vote and the champ was Hoosiers (25.58%) which narrowly won over Field of Dreams (20.93%) and Bull Durham (16.28%).

But, many folks who had voted for one of the other cadidates said that if we narrowed even further they might have voted differently. As a result, we did a final poll with just the top 3.

    It came out with:
    • Field of Dreams - 36.62%
    • Hoosiers - 32.39%
    • The Natural - 30.99%

Why are you wasting time here when you could be wasting it by listening to the latest episode of the DBR Podcast?

Caddyshack and Hoop dreams need be added to the list, and I'll throw out an under-rated movie that I caught on cable again the other day - Diggstown.

    1 The Natural
    2 Hoosiers
    3 Hoop Dreams
    4 Bull Durham
    5 Caddyshack
    6 Rocky 2
    7 Field of Dreams
    8 Slapshot
    9 8 Men Out
    10 Diggstown

Worst sports movies of all time - tie between Caddyshack 2, any Rocky after #1, any Major League after #1, and Summer Catch.
