    Hurley Horse Happenings - 2009!

Time for the 2009 rendition of the Hurley Horse watch. I did not see any Hurley or Devil Eleven purchases at the major yearling or mixed sales this past year so they may be racing their existing stock. Keep your eyes out for any horses worth following.

This year's first entry is Stream Cat is running in this sunday's running of the San Antonio Handicap at Santa Anita. A full field of 11 horses (sounds like the ACC tournament) will be going 9 furlongs. It is a tough assignment. Stream Cat had a January start that I missed (coming in 6th) but he should be rounding into shape. Stream Cat had only 4 starts last year; starting a
2nd time so soon could only mean that he is in decent shape. He figures to be the 3rd through the 5th choice, depending on scratches.

    Scrrrratched - Fake Break

Stream Cat was scratched from the San Antonio Stakes. Hopefully they found a better spot for him in another race. For those of you who handicapped the race and want to see the result, here is the chart, courtesy of Brisnet:

If you happen to remember, please shoot me a PM if any Hurley horses make their way to Arlington this year. I'd like to try to get out there and catch the race.

Stream Cat in to go Saturday at Santa Anita

Bobby Hurley's (and other's) Stream Cat will make his second start of the season in the 1 Million Dollar Santa Anita Handicap on Saturday at...Santa Anita. Stream Cat has the extreme outside post #14 and will carry 114 lbs. The field is loaded with top handicap horses from turf and dirt. Einstein and Court Vision from the turf; Colonel John and Court Vision from the dirt (and last year's triple crown trail). At 1 1/4 mile, this is a bit more of a challenge to the dirt horses than the turf horses who usually go longer distances. He'll need a good ride to see the wood from the 14 post too and cut down on the amount of ground he has to cover. Stream Cat will need his best effort to get a check. Einstein looks to be the more logical horse.

Also of interest, on of DBR's main articles has an interview with Bobby Hurley http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow...h-bobby-hurley
In it, Bobby Mentions that he "probably has five [horses]". Well, now you can see why I have a problem tracking his horses; if he isn't positive about the number of horses he has in training, what chance do I have?

    Stream Cat Outclassed

Stream Cat had a tough time in the Santa Anita Handicap. He went wide in the first turn and was never really in the race. The turf horses Einstein and Champs Elysees finished 1 - 2 on the turf like artificial surface that is used at all California tracks (I bet you knew that).

Go Time makes 2nd Lifetime Start

Go Time will make his 2nd lifetime start at Gulfstream Park in the 5th race on Saturday. In a nice accommodation, the race will take place before the Duke game so Bobby can take in both events.

If you recall, Go Time won in a track record time at Monmouth Park. He won a 2 furlong race. It was the first (and only) time a 2 furlong race had been run. But he won by 2 lengths, and then he disappeared for 10 months and now reappears for his 3 year old debut for Devil Eleven Stable in a 5.5 furlong event at 4 -1 odds. He shows a bullet work at 4 furlongs. The other horses are a bit more experienced, but hopefully GT has some talent.

Go Time finished 5th in his first outing of the year. He never threatened and apparently needed the race for conditioning.

Stream Cat in to go Saturday, with a Shot

Stream Cat is entered into a small field at Santa Anita on Saturday. He is entered in the Tokyo City Stakes at Santa Anita at 1 1/2 miles on the dirt. There is a field of 7 and you can pick a reason to like or not each of the horses. The classiest competition looks to be Big Booster, who finished 3rd in the inaugural Breeders Cup Marathon last fall (I believe that may also have been the first Breeder's Cup race NOT shown on TV). But that horse has not raced for 5 months, is 8 years old, and finished 3rd in last year's Tokyo City Stakes. Other than that horse, Stream Cat is taking the biggest drop in class and has the best speed figures going into last year, although only a 3rd among them is a decent effort. I think he has a chance to get a big piece of the purse this week.

Get it while you can. This thread will be buried quickly with this extended weekend's events.

    Stream Cat Wins!!

Stream Cat came from off the pace to win the Tokyo City Handicap by a neck over Big Booster who was coming up fast. Stream Cat was the 3rd choice and paid $11.40. The exacta was a lousy $13.50, but I digress...
A nice pick up for this horse who has been chasing the Grade I and Grade II level horses for the past year.

Aspasia Races at Gulfstream Park on Saturday

Devil Eleven Stable's Aspasia is making her 4th lifetime start, first since December, in a maiden claiming race at Gulfstream Park on Saturday 4/11/09 in the 6th race. She is in for a tag of $30K and has post position 3. If she's sharp, she can win this race. Here is the past performance information, courtesy of brisnet:
    http://www.brisnet.com/bris_link/pdf...her_144337.pdf

Also, Tiger Woodman is racing on Saturday too. Tiger Woodman is now owned solely by John Goldthorpe, who was once partners with Bobby Hurley on this same horse. That race is at Keeneland, Race 10. Here is the past performance, courtesy of brisnet:
    http://www.brisnet.com/bris_link/pdf...her_144195.pdf

I will not be covering Tiger Woodman anymore since he is not related directly to Hurley's enterprises anymore.

    Aspasia takes a 3rd

Aspasia took the front early and apparently hit the rail, which can take a little momentum. Still, this is a nice start. Look for better in the next start.

Go Go Shoot and Aspasia In To Go Saturday

Go Go Shoot is in to Go Go Go on Saturday at Delaware Park in Race 9 in the $75K Moscarelli Memorial S.. This is a moderate but select set of horses. Bullet works all over the page. Go Go Shoot has had 7 months off; his first extended time off since going into training, so he should have come back with some significant growth but could understandably be short here. I look for him to win some experience.

Aspasia is entered in for a tag at Calder RAce Course on Saturday in Race 3. She is entered for $32K (you want a piece of her?). This appears to be a drop down in company to give her some confidence. I could not locate any Past Performance documents for her.

My Mistake - Go Go Shoot not a Hurley Horse Anymore

Looking through the Past Performances, I noticed that Go Go Shoot is no longer a Hurley horse. He is now owned by Repole Stable.

It still would be good for the horse to do well. 1) It shows that you can buy a good horse from Hurley's connections 2) The horse is still by Hurley's stallion Songandaprayer.

    On to the next horse...

Go Go Shoot, up the track

Go Go Shoot finished 8th in his first race in a long time. In his usual style, he went to the front, but he wasn't in condition to hold the position against experienced sprinters.

Although this horse is not longer a Hurley stable member, he is a DevilEleven Stable breeding credit. So we will take note of his progress from time to time.

Stream Cat in for Sunday at Hollywood Park

Stream Cat is in to go in the Gallant Man Stakes at Hollywood Park on Sunday May 17, 2009. He has post 7 in this $100K affair that appears to be on the Polytrack, which is a turflike synthetic surface. The route is 1 5/8 miles, but all of these horses look like they can go a distance. This will be a tougher race than the last one.

Stream Cat finishes 4th, Aspasia finished 2nd

Stream Cat was in position to do damage in this race, but couldn't finish as well as hoped. He did however finish 4th as the favorite. Here is the race chart, courtesy of the Daily Racing Form:

An additional report on Aspasia, whose entry I missed. She finished 2nd in a Maiden Claiming race. She just got nipped by a head at the wire. Here is the race chart, courtesy of the Daily Racing Form:

I don't know if you noticed, but there was a pretty good race at Pimlico this weekend. A lot of firsts in that race. Let's hope all horses come out of the race well and we see these horses butt heads again later this year, perhaps in 3 weeks.
