Most of you don't know Jack Schmitt.
Schmitt was notable because he was initially slated to fly on Apollo 18, but after the mission was canceled, the community of lunar geologists pressured NASA to reassign Schmitt to a remaining flight arguing the importance of landing a geologist on the Moon. He bumped Joe Engle from the mission.
[He is the] only person without a background in military aviation to have walked on the Moon.
So hooray for geologists! Though I doubt Joe Engle was a fan.
