The other quercus fusiformus I have in the back yard is a branded species, an Empire Live Oak. I got one of the early ones they produced in August of 2012. He is known as Empire.

The other oak in the back yard is a Quercus buckleyi, http://texastreeid.tamu.edu/content/TreeDetails/?id=90
Otherwise known as the Texas Red Oak, definitely not to be confused with the Shumard Red Oak more common further north.
I call mine Red.
One of my quercus fusiformis in the front yard died after about 4 years. The arborist insisted it was a Virginiana.
I replaced it with a Quercus Laceyi. Otherwise known as a Lacey Oak.

The most recent oak I installed is a Quercus muehlenbergii or Chinkapin Oak.

I debated quite a while on what to call it. I settled eventually on mule.
So, there you have it. Fuse, Empire, Monte, Red, lacey and the mule. My attempt to keep various oak species going.
I take measurements and pictures of them every year to track their growth. Those that know me on FB can find the albums there.
I'm going to talk to the arborist this week. They claim to have a much better fertilizer program than me using Medina Growin' Green granules. Otherwise known as chicken stuff. Their solution is much more expensive, so I need to take good measurements to make sure the investment pays off.
I've never had a ficus. Wouldn't know what to do with it. Plus, since it isn't native, well that makes it invasive.
I will confess to having two crape myrtles. One is a bit of a mess, as it appears to be an Acoma grafted on to a Basham's party pink. The other is a Dynamite.
I do have Mexican Olive and a Desert Willow also. The latter I placed too close to my air conditoning unit.

My mother-in-law gave me a lavender plant for Christmas 2018. It is still alive. It's a miracle.

I was not pleased with his cut last year.

Monte produces a boat load of acorns. But with local cats hanging out in my backyard, squirrels are an endangered species.
Need to aerate and top dress the yard again this year.
