JK, will the boards be linked from the new site? I couldn't find a link other than in the Welcome article.
Also, the reply page looks wonky... this is what I'm seeing:
Attachment 3634
Edit: I'm on a Mac and browsing in Firefox.
I've been walkin' in my sleep
Countin' troubles 'stead of countin' sheep
Where the years went I can't say
I just turned around and they've gone away
I've been siftin' through the layers
Of dusty books and faded papers
They tell a story I used to know
And it was one that happened so long ago
It's gone away in yesterday
Now I find myself on the moutainside
Where the rivers change direction
Across the Great Divide
Now, I hear the owl a-callin'
Softly as the night was fallin'
With a question and I replied
But he's gone across the borderline
It's gone away in yesterday
Now I find myself on the moutainside
Where the rivers change direction
Across the Great Divide
The finest hour that I have seen
Is the one that comes between
The edge of night and the break of day
It's when the darkness rolls away
It's gone away in yesterday
Now I find myself on the moutainside
Where the rivers change direction
Across the Great Divide

(seemed appropriate even without any poptart references... I'll take my lumps, with or without the gravy...)
Found it.
I'll answer for -jk : The boards will be linked, supposedly very soon, like in the next day or two. As you noted, there's a link in the "Welcome" article, and we posted info here prior to the switch over, but there will be a permanent link of some sort on the new front page as soon as the team can get around to it.
As for reporting glitches in the user interface, please use the thread on the EK Board to report those.
Thanks!
Woke up this morning after a very strange dream:
I dreamed that basketball season had started, and that we beat a top 20 football team on the road while becoming bowl eligible! I liked the dream so much that I am going back to bed, hoping that the dream continues.
Ha! I dreamed (nightmared?) last night that the ACC office announced that the game was "under further review" and this AM they determined that the ruling on the field had been overturned and vt had won the game 'cuz they had more first downs, total yards and time of possession than we did and therefore deserved to win the game:rolleyes:. I got up and took a cold shower and felt much better after reading the newspaper and espn recaps of the game;).
For those that enjoy soccer, you might have seen this on Sportscenter's Top Ten one day last week: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=848Hd4RtM3w
The goalie is one of the youth from my church.
Just had to share this. You might have seen it as one of the Top 10 plays on SportsCenter last week. The goalie is one of the youth from my church. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/highsc...143701264.html
Happy Saturday, everyone.
When I got home last night, the forms were installed for the new patio. I hope we have a week of dry weather so the patio can be poured and the fence installed. I want to move everyhing back down so my car can go in the garage.
And I'm tired of living in a fish bowl.
I hear ya DinK. Decided to paint one bathroom and bedroom, counter change around sink, pull up carpet in bedroom.
Easy, right?
Five weeks of fun.
I live in a townhouse so I have no control over the timing of outside projects. My backyard is the patio, some additional space for flower boxes and a fence. Since it was surrounded by a fence, I have no drapes or blinds on my 8 foot sliding glass door. I feel very exposed while watching tv. Plus I had to dig up all my perennials and relocate my Korean tombstone while the project happens. Hope he finishes this week so I can move everything back. These projects always take longer than anticipated.
Thanksgiving just a week away, taking lumpy mashed potato orders now. Who's got my gravy?
Ugh, Thanksgiving. It's usually my favorite holiday, but this year... ugh. Law school. Ugh.
(Note: First final is Dec. 2, aka the Monday after Thanksgiving.)
Option A
I can go home for a 1-4 days, as long as I believe I'll be able to study.
Plus: I'll be home. Plus: I'll get to see my parents. Minus: Not sure I believe I can study sufficiently without distractions. (???: Food... not sure if my mom is cooking this year because she said she'd rather go OUT TO DINNER. I say blasphemy. It's Thanksgiving, for goodness sake. I have a strict "No going out to dinner on Thanksgiving" rule.)
Option B
Go to a friend's house about an hour away for Thanksgiving dinner.
Plus: It's just for half a day or so. Plus: I haven't seen this friend since the summer. Plus: Home cooked meal. Minus: I don't get to go home and see my parents. Minus: I don't really get a break from studying (or is that a plus?).
I've been trying to make this decision for a month now. Still can't decide. :( It may be an 11th hour decision, as in, literally the night before. ::sigh::
EDIT:
Option C
I just order turkey, lumpy mashed potatoes, etc from my DBR friends. ;)
I'll take some lumpy potatoes. Let me know when you want the gravy to arrive.
I'll send yhe gravy and through in a piece or two of pie. Still working on the pie selection. Options are pumpkin, bourbon pecan, cranberry apple streusel (aka crapple), french silk, Reese's Mousse, search for a new recipe.
Let me know you pleasure.
The answer is clear: hit the books lady. Continue to make us proud! :D
I'd like to sample one of (some of?) these during the holiday season:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turducken
Hope it escapes the board filters :o:rolleyes: .
I'm leaning strongly toward going to my friend's house, if only because my parents are both sick (they got sick toward the end of the cruise). I don't need to get sick for finals, thankyouverymuch.
Sue, what subjects?
Ethical Lawyering- MC final is 50% of overall grade. We just turned in a combined 35-page paper (I had a partner) based on a graded client interview. Client interview 25%, combined paper (client letter + memo @ 10% each) 20%, Email to partner 24 hours after client interview 5%.
Evidence- entire grade. MC + essay. Scared to death of this one. To. Death.
Trademark- entire grade. 48-hr take home, 2 essays: 1 issue and 1 policy.
Law review- pass/fail. :)
(MC = multiple choice)
Argh, more worries. Daughter-of-weezie is in Houston planning on flying back to NYC Wed night in time for the MSG Duke game.
weezie is experiencing great anxiety. weezie refers to self in third person when she is nearly hysterical with anxiety.
Praying for safe flights and minimal delays fro daughter-of-weezie. Hopefully there will be a big break in the weather to allow her flight in. Of course, the gates of hell starting to open for Saturday's game in the home of the unc faithful may help spread some heat and clear the bad weather.
weezie the worry wart thanks you DinK!
She will lift a brew to your honor tomorrow night in MSG.
Yay, pre-season game and beers allowed!
Follow up- I decided to stay in CA. Finals suck.
The deal I made with my mom is that she gets to make me a belated-Thanksgiving dinner when I'm there next month. She readily agreed. :D
Gobble gobble, y'all!
Gobble, gobble.
Happy day-of-digestion, everyone!
Please tell me no one here went out to "brave" the stupidity of Black Friday.
I have contributed to Cyber Monday!
One down, OMG to go. The next one is a doozy.
This evidence final is going to be so much fun! - said no one ever. :(
(Side note: The professor held a review session today. I seriously wondered if I was in the same class all semester as some of these people.)
Although not a substitute for knowing the rules, it helps me to think of the purposes behind each rule. The rules generally slant towards ensuring reliability and against speculation, etc. read the rule, think of the purpose, then think how the rule does or does not advance it.
But evidence is one of those classes where there is a rule. Kinda like tax and cp.
Has anyone ever tried that with constitutional law?http://crazietalk.net/ourhouse/images/smilies/3.gif
Fos such a complex governmental structure, the Constitution is actually a pretty short outline that is much more flexible than the evidence code.
(I know you weren't looking for a legal answer, but it's the only one I can give without the PPB police cracking down on me) ;>)
Here's something for the linguists:
When someone is said to have "laid an egg", it is an expression of poor performance. Why? Eggs are a renewable and versatile source of protein, (dare I say) even more valuable than pop tarts. Given enough time, an egg can also be transformed into fried chicken. While this is not quite as impressive as transforming swine into bacon (or BBQ), nor water into wine, I think it would rank right up there.
So don't use "laid an egg" in a negative way. Instead, replace with a phrase such as "crapped the bed", which removes all doubt.
Duke just announced that ED decisions are coming next Thursday, the 12th. One week until I finally can (hopefully) call myself a member of the Class of 2018!
Trying to recover from last night...
Damnit. An inch of snow, and a quarter inch of freezing rain on top by morning.
But we still have power - which a couple years ago would have been exceptional.
How are y'all doing?
-jk
Pretty much the same here in Loudoun County. Not sure how thick the ice is yet, but it's bound to be thicker by morning. The salvation may be a layer of warmer air at higher altitudes. If it rains enough up high, it should help down here at the surface.
Well, I had multiple flights cancelled, only some due to weather. We spent about 7 hours at the Greenville-Spartanburg airport before finally renting a car and driving to Charlotte, where US Airways put us up in a hotel (since our missed connection was due to maintenance, not weather). Finally got back to IAD this afternoon, and things are looking pretty icy.
And more snow coming tomorrow!
Power just came back up over here in VA. 1.5 days out. Supremely annoying since we're well water, etc.
Y'know they come around every summer to trim trees/limbs and it never changes the outages in winter.
Country living stinks.
Hate power failures, especially in winter. I grew up with well water, with the power problems it brings...
Snow here is just winding down. Maybe a couple inches. Mostly slush on the roads - no sledding.
-jk
I wish we had a generator! We've priced them but it's rather impressive cost-wise. We've got an older house, fairly big, two heating/cooling systems, two well pumps. Propane fuel. Generator is doable but we need to save some big buck, beginning around 6-7K.
Whining and belly-aching is a lot cheaper ;)
We got about 10 inches of snow over the weekend and now it's decided to turn to ice. It was 65 degrees and sunny last Wednesday. Indiana weather at it's finest.
I think about 10-15% of folks in my town have generators these days. Pepco had been awful over the years. But they do seem to be trying - we did well with the ice storm.
The cost is high. It would take a whole bunch of lost freezer stuff and hotel rooms to pay off.
-jk
No power on a well is not fun. My sister has resorted to melting snow on the cooktop to have water to flush. Doesn't work so well if you are dealing with an ice storm or don't have a gas cooktop.
Living in snow country, I do pretty much want/envy the $6k full house auto kick-on generator systems.
But we have something that works sufficiently: we got a generator (gasoline powered) and had an electrician wire up
enough circuits to keep the house from freezing...it basically runs the water well pump, the furnace, and most lights in the house, and
the fridge. Does not do the electric stove...but the total cost was less than $2k and VERY much worth it, has saved us several times.
Plus you can keep the generator inside (wheels easily outside) where the trickle charger keeps the battery warm and toasty.
Get the electric start, too, much less frustrating than the pull cord models.
After thirteen years, this is the first Christmas that Santa is not the star with anyone in the OPK household. Kinda sad. Just does not really get me revved when the secular stuff is just boiled down to a want list.
Really not jazzed this season. Feh.
Well, we have always left out Twinkies and single malt. THAT tradition will continue, or the damn tree will be on the lawn before sunrise.
But I am with you, after disliking the Christmas trapping, then reveling in the wonder of youth, I am back to the meh. Glad the kids are still under my roof, although that's end is starting to come into focus too. I guess "mixed blessings" is the theme this year, but gotta embrace the blessings where you can find them.
Last year there was a general consensus that the movies weren't that great, and that the categories weren't that strong. The year before, The Artist (a movie I found dreadfully boring and uninspired) won it all mainly because it was "artsy."
Well, all that changes this year. This might be the strongest movie awards competition ever. I know Throaty (or someone) has been arguing that all we have are these awful big budget movies, but the awards argue differently. Check out the likely candidates for the top awards
Best Picture:
Captain Phillips, 12 Years a Slave, Nebraska, Gravity, American Hustle, Inside Llewyn Davis, The Wolf of Wall Street. All great choices
Best Actor. Might be the toughest lineup in history
Tom Hanks, Captain Phillips
Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave
Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club
Bruce Dern, Nebraska
Robert Redford, All is Lost
Best Actress
Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
Sandra Bullock, Gravity
Amy Adams, American Hustle
Judi Dench, Philomena
Emma Thompkins, Saving Mr. Banks
Best Supporting Actor (also might be best grouping ever)
Michael Fassbender, 12 Years a Slave
Barkhad Abdi, Captain Phillips
Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club
James Gandolfini, Enough Said
Daniel Bruel, Rush
Best Supporting Actress
Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle
Lupita Nyong'o, 12 Years a Slave
Julia Roberts, August: Osage County
June Squib, Nebraska
Sally Hawkins, Blue Jasmine
Best Director
Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity
Paul Greengrass, Captain Phillips
Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave
Alexander Payne, Nebraska
David O. Russell, American Hustle
I mean those categories are...all...just stacked. In each one I could make a solid case for at least three people to win, and in many I could make a solid case for any of them to win. Will make for a tense and exciting awards show, I would guess, as no one film should dominate (though I guess 12 Years a Slave might win a bunch just because of its power)
Finals. Are. OVER.
I am now halfway done with law school.
:D
Poor Gandolfini...damn.
Better than last year's slate of Best Supporting Actor nominees for the Oscars (Christoph Walz, Alan Arkin, Robert DeNiro, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Tommy Lee Jones)? Tough to top a group in which four of the five nominees are prior winners.
Among the actresses -- is this the year that Amy Adams finally breaks through? She's now got a combined 15 Oscar, Golden Globe, SAG and BAFTA nominations, with zero wins so far. Seems like the major awards have been orbiting around her for some time -- does one (or more) land this year?
Saw Nebraska last night. Bruce Dern is, as all the critics seem to be saying, stunningly good.
It's a he-double-stix of a movie. Very moving, dark and funny.
Anybody who has ever been a parent or a child of a parent will be affected by seeing it.
WOW!
This continued discussion of quality in films gets so tiresome. That's not how you measure a film. If someone could line up these nominees by order of box office, that would be helpful.
All five were prior winners, which of course is impossible to top.
I feel more and more disconnected from this awards thing. Every year is pretty much the same; I don't see anything particularly special about this year, aside from the 3-5 expected nominations of minority actors. The only interesting subplot there is how the most likely nominees -- Ejiofor, Abdi, Nyongo -- are not American, and whether Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey can parlay their SAG nominations into sneaking in as well.
I figured it's time I contribute to this thread...
Today I exercised my 5th amendment at a DUI checkpoint in my hometown of Asheville, NC. I was on my way home tonight around 10:30 and drove into a checkpoint. The officer was very polite and asked for my license, so I handed him my license to cooperate with the law. He then asked me where I was going and I answered with a simple "I don't answer any questions". He followed by asking if I had anything to drink tonight, and I gave him the same short answers in a very respectful manner. The officer then gave me my license back and told me to have a nice night, I replied with a sincere "be safe".
Some may think this was silly or unnecessary, but I don't see it that way. These officers were doing their job, but at NO time should you ever surrender your rights. I had nothing to drink and nothing to lie about, but decided to plead the fifth. Curiosity of how it would be handled by the Asheville Police Department was one reason, but I also wanted them to know that at least SOMEBODY that they stopped knew their rights, and used them.
Has anyone else attempted this before? Or does everyone throw their rights away?
Not Movie related but Golden Globe related:
Tatiana Maslany finally gets an award nomination for Orphan Black. !!! Her performance is one of the best I've seen in TV in years.
We are playing dirty Santa at work (15 dollar limit), and the only thing I can think of is a gift card. I'm thinking about hiding movie tickets inside of a framed, autographed head shot of yours truly :).
Anyone else playing?
We do this at one of my client's Christmas parties. I've seen a variety of things over the years - miniature chocolate liquor bottles, a kit to turn your car into Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer, scratchoff lottery tickets, chocolate, beer steins, coasters, bottle of wine, and ove' glove, etc. It is always hard to tell from the beginning which item will bet the most frequently stolen but it is always fun. We just raised the limit from $10 to $15 this year so will see what we get. I'm going with homemade brownies, a mechanical pencil (I just discovered a new one that I love!), a fiber optic Christmas tree powered through a USB port.
I bought mine already. When I win, I'll buy a round for the house. :D
In the mean time, I'm getting my $1's worth of entertainment by thinking about all the fun things I will be able to do with it. The best part is thinking about what charities I will help. And season bball tickets. And retirement.
Seconded! With one small tweak, how about OPK stands us all a ticket to the Duke @ hole z and we all go and boo. I would like a soda and maybe popcorn, too, please.
We might actually make Roy cry.
I will neither confirm nor deny that I am suddenly, sickeningly super-wealthy. I can, however, announce that the only two people who will be attending next year's Late Night With Roy will be a PC fan, and Miley Cyrus.
Will get back to y'all about the Duke game, may trade with folks in the Bryan Center in exchange for Bitcoin donations to charity. And of course, free to all DBR'ers.
While I still decline to confirm or deny that I have to buy a bigger boat for the boatload of money that the lottery generates, I am proud to announce that I have outsourced all of my posting and reading to my new Girl Friday, Nora Helmi Kjellsson. Her English is not the best, so please be patient.
No realli! She was Karving her initials on the møøse with the sharpened end of an interspace tøøthbrush given her by Svenge - her brother-in-law - an Oslo dentist and star of many Norwegian møvies: "The Høt Hands of an Oslo Dentist", "Fillings of Passion", "The Huge Mølars of Horst Nordfink"...
Bring on the llamas.
Sack Jøhnny Føøtball.
(Alas, cannot spork. Too bad, great reference)
It wasn't OPK who won the gazillion $$ lottery prize. We won't be seeing an empty Smith Center next year for Late Night with Ol Roy.

Sorry to deflate everyone's hopes.
Look on the brightside-I didn't screw up Christmas with my thread about the Texas-unc game last PM.:o
So, approximately half a day from now, this thread will turn 6 years old. It's somewhat amusing to go back and re-read random pages. It's also funny to me that 3 of the original page 1 posters (I snuck in with post 19!) are now "on holiday" from the board.
Hats off to Bostondevil for starting a conversation that's lasted so long (has it ever fallen to page 3?), not to mention, lead to actual meat-space friendships, and spun off an entirely new internet community.
What kind of side dish do you serve with "meat-space?"
;-)
Still going! Sometimes strong. Eat a PopTart! It has been fun getting to know all of you the past 6 years. And yes, I have read every single post in this thread, except for the ones on the page with the pictures of the huge spiders, I can't handle pictures of huge spiders. Please do not post more pictures of huge spiders, I don't want to break my streak again.
Christmas dinner: chestnut-sage stuffed crown roast of pork and a couple bottles of 95 Dominus. Other green things, etc, etc.
Oh yeah, and "Smack Yourself In Your Own Personal Face Chocolate Cake" for dessert.
Happy Anniversary to us!
we're currently in the middle of our worst ice storm in 15+ years. Limbs and trees popping and cracking day and night.
If anyone wants to wrestle downed trees and chip ice, I can help them.

Merry Christmas, y'all!
Just a PSA...
Be sure to drink your Ovaltine.

I blame the mashed 'taters.
I just saw
I don't know if you guys remember Mike Posner, but he is a Duke grad songwriter/producer/artist. I believe he even did a song for one of the Duke Hype videos on DBP. He has a new song apparently, and although I am no fan of the genre, you should atleast check out 2:25 of the video...
Last night I had belated Hanukkah dinner.
Tonight I had belated Thanksgiving dinner.
It's been a good two nights. :)
I had the flu vaccine in early November, but I think I still have the flu.
How 'bout the Polio vaccine? Small Pox? Where do you draw the line?
-jk
Serious question -- or as serious as the LTE can get: does polio or small pox mutate like the flu? I have the (highly indicated) sense that "the flu" mutates and is highly variable, whereas the ones you mention are fairly static. So a flu shot may or may not innoculate against a particular strain of influenza, whereas the others are somewhat known and stable viruses.
I post this knowing that many of you took Bonkistry, and my sister lurker doctors may once again exploit my ignorance on all things medical. But there seems to be a difference between the flu and those you list.
Anyway, hope whoever has it, shakes it.
Signed, your local poly sci/history major.
My limited understanding of the vaccines are that they must predict strains before the season, such that you may be unprotected against a particular strain. I think that is likely what happened with me. It appears to have run its course. As my signature picture shows(down below), I used a lot of Kleenex.
Happy New Year's Eve, you kooks!
Ready to enjoy THE football game and I've even got the blackeye peas soaking (gonna cook 'em w/smoked turkey wings) and V-8 juice ready for the 1/1/14 bloody marys.
Look at me, so organized!
Ah, a brand new year. Duke basketball is playing with zip and promise, and Duke football is not only relevant but rising on the national stage. A chance to enjoy old friends and make new ones.
To 2014: may your smiles be wide, your coffee good, and may health and prosperity follow us all!
Well, I was in the hotel room just waking up. But, yeah.
Got a tough situation to start the new year -- just opened a bottle of wine that I have never had before. Not good enough to really enjoy, not bad enough to toss. Not sure if it is corked, doesn't really taste wrong in "that" way.
Didn't plan on tough decisions today.
This New Year's resolution: stop making promising that I am unlikely to keep.
Did Brody really die in Homeland, or did they pull a switcherroooo?
Anyone see this video of what i can only imagine is a heavily intoxicated Bama fan at the Rose Bowl? Pretty hillarious.
http://youtu.be/oPojG4XpLAY
I assume you meant Sugar Bowl.
Anyway, here's the LA Times write up on it.
I'm in the mountains of NC and the thermometer says 7 degrees, while the weather channel says 1 degree. Bring your critters in and stay warm!
Im im western NC as well (Asheville) my latest reading said 9 degrees...tomorrow the low is -9...wow! Bundle up bud, its about to get frigid!
It is supposed to get into the high teens here in parts of San Antonio. I don't think my part of town will see that, mainly the northern hills.
Here in Hillsboro, FL they are predicting an over-night low of 47. High tomorrow of 65.
Pasadena, CA*
High today: 77
Low tonight: 44
High tomorrow: 75
:cool::cool:
* No, I'm not here for the BCS Game. I live here.
Well
Here in the lower Hudson Valley, it is currently 31°F - although it is supposed to go down below zero tonight.
My daughter lives in Chicago and, this morning, she had to walk for about six blocks from the El down to the Field Museum where she works with a temperature of -15° and a wind chill of whatever (The Field is right on the lake and there is no cover for several blocks above it).
She was frozen.
Go Northwestern!
We're at about 10 in Montgomery County, just outside the Beltway. Wind chill about zero. Or so the nearby weatherbug station reports.
Cold enough for me.
-jk
Aurora Illinois is rocking a -11 with blowing snow. Wind chill... well... you don't want to know.
I live near Orange County, NC. And yes, it's done it again:
Attachment 3779
19 degrees and falling.
I try to stay indoors. I do have to make the occasional discreet delivery, but I stick to suburbia during the winter. Warm homes, clients have cash on hand, and they don't ask for change back.
I was at Roy Williams' spare house tonight. Place was nice and toasted -- I mean, toasty.
According to my friend Gordon, it's ten degrees and getting colder down by Boulder Dam today.
As I prepare to snooze, it's 16 here this minute just a hair north of Richmond, with a forecasted low just below 10. School's delayed 2 hours tomorrow.
Feels pretty comfortable in the house, though. I just temped the air coming from my heat source and it registered 91, I didn't know it could even blow that high. I'm usually happy if it's in the 80's. And that's with a digital therm. Wow!! Guess I'll make sure to keep changing the filters regularly.
Glad to see the ACC break the SEC stranglehold on fball championships, WAY TO GO FSU!!
Hey, you people don't have to deal with temperature inversion!
+16F right now at Copper Mountain (12,400'). But only +4F at the Leadville airport (9928'). Aspen (7700') is at +5F.
I'm at 9100' and in a largish valley, so we're probably a couple degrees colder than Leadville.
Leadville got down to -10F last night. Our average January low is right around zero.
For fun, check the 24-hour temperature swings in Alamosa or Gunnison. Keeping in mind Alamosa is some 200 miles south of and 2000' below me.
I was in LA over New Years' tho; it was nice.
You did ask.
My car thermometer read a balmy 30° in my garage this morning. It got down to 2° by the time I made it to the office - a mere mile aware.
7F here this morning. Won't be too long before it climbs to 9F!
I picked up my family yesterday, on their return home from SW Florida. The high there hit 77 right about the time they got to the airport, and when I picked them up on this end at O'Hare, it was -16. So a temperature shift of 93 (!) degrees over a 2.5 hour flight.
I'm just hoping my citrus survived.
Check out the video of throwing hot water into sub zero air. Fast forward to 1:30.
