Don't get lost there. They might start up a thread about Louisville Pittsburgh. Shoot, I just saw a good thread about Pittsnogel.

Hey Ymo, I'm seeing you tonight, right? Don't be late, they are beyond sold out and they will give your seat away! (As long as you are there by 7:50pm you will be fine.)
it might be quiet here for a while with BD and Ymo at the theatre and a gang at Tyler's after the Duke-GU game today.
My cold is foolishly trying to hold on to me (I am a week into it). Got my drugs... got my juice and got my "caretaker", and Duke once again prevails! The germs haven't a chance!!
Ah yes, the sweet release of a drug induced state. The colors, the colors!!!!
You reminded me of the only interview question I remember when I met with a Duke rep in my house. I worked in a pharmacy in high school and he asked why I liked working there. Due to a scheduling issue, my friend was there during the meeting but sitting where the interviewer didn't have her in his line of vision - she is giving me a silent "gimme drugs, gimme drugs" to that question and I had to try to keep a straight face. Not easy to do.
Wish me luck. We are spending the weekend at the coast with some friends and the 'canes-holes are on the tv now. I'm getting nauseated looking at the colors but they were nice enough to watch Duke beat the Hoyas with us today. Should I humor them and stay in the room (don't even think about me rooting for unc) or should I politely excuse myself and go read or trim my nails. Tough decisions in life.
I'm going to need medical attention before the night is over watching the officiating in the canes-holes game. unc has shot about 10 ft to 0 for miami, tyler has travelled at least 5 times with no violations called and several hacks have not been called on the holes despite quite a few miami players hitting the deck. Ugghh.
I will be pulling for UConn women Monday night...
... they play the Holes.
Yoinks. Hopefully, you've got a favorable tax return coming?
I know our water utility co. here will write off one bill due to a leak. One, in the course of the time you own the house. If the same case is true with you, what are the chances you'd ever have a larger leak? Slim, I'm guessing/hoping. Here's hoping your utility is as lenient or moreso.
There's a picture to go along with Tilly's pastrami craving, but I haven't uploaded it from my camera yet. But I will, probably tomorrow. Oh, heck, it is already tomorrow (Sunday). I'll do it later today
I had a 15 oz. NY Strip. Medium rare. It was excellent! I want another one right now!
Only 10 more posts to 9000. I think I'll take care of this myself in tne next 10 minutes or so, unless someone else would like to join me!
Devildeac, Angelo's Pizza has new owners. The pizza is some what similar, but different, and the slices are much smaller. Not bad overall.
Shall I discuss the fact that I no longer have imaginary friends? What a shocking revelation!
I could also discuss my current mid-life crisis. Perhaps that should be saved for another thread altogether. ;)
Really a great weekend. Great friends, great game, excellent food and beverage!
C'mon, Oz. Cantcha keep up?
Congrats, Ozzie, on #9000! Congrats to us all!
Frack it's cold here in the lobby tonight (free wireless here). I think someone left a door open. Maybe that means it's time to go night night.
No geese tomorrow. I requested geese-free flights. (I don't even want to think about it and I must be crazy tired to be making jokes.)
Kind of diggin' the fact that I get Monday to recover.
2/7 & 2/11 could be *really* difficult, btw. The flights aint perdy.
Congratulations on 9,000, Ozzie. I take a break to read my Sunday School lesson and you and Sue go on a posting frenzy. I'm impressed.
Hahahaha no.
I need to dig a little further to see what the deal is on those 2 dates. If it's a 1:30 game, what time do you think I could get to the airport by? (2/7 gm)
2/11 could just be rough due to having to take 2 more days off. Not that I care much. :D But I do have a really crazy sense of responsibility... I'm stupid like that.
Just want to keep this post going.
It's always important (especially as a female) to have an environmentally-friendly cup handy in one's tent while camping. Venturing out into the woods, or to the nearest outhouse, is often annoying and cold.
He's going to review Bud Light?
Don't remember if I posted here in the LTE or in my trip thread, but I've never considered y'all imaginary friends. You thought of each other (and me) that way. ;)
I was always real and so were all of you. Y'all just were living inside my computer for a real long time.
(Day-O, The Banana Boat Song- the Sue71 version)
Day-o. Day-ay-ay-o.
Daylight come an' I donwan' go home.
Day, me say day, me say day, me say day
Me say day, me say day-ay-ay-o
Daylight come an' I donwan' go home.
:(
I did a review of Budweiser. Positive one too, but I couldn't do the same for Bud Light. I will say the can has a pretty blue in it.
Budweiser is a foreign beer now...owned by the Belgians and the Brazilians
It has been an interesting day. I've been putting the finishing touches on a manuscript for work that was done at my last job. I had to do this work on my laptop, which has a burned out monitor, because the laptop has a program on it that is essential for the figure I have to draw. That's easy, right? I only need to hook up the monitor from my desktop computer to the laptop, do the necessary work, and then plug the monitor back in to the desktop. Wrong. When I plugged in the monitor and re-started my desktop I got the black screen of death. Am I hosed, or is there anything I can do to save my desktop?
BTW, I have 2 (yes, two!) papers going out next week: one from the old job, one from the new job. That makes up for the potential loss of the computer.
Sue, sounds like you had a grand adventure. Wish I could've been there! Did all of you cheer extra for me? Eat extra steak for me at The Barn? :)
I'd like to offer troubleshooting suggestions, but I'm not quite clear on the problem.
Were you able to use the external monitor with your laptop? (Sounds like yes.)
Are you now unable to put the external monitor back with your desktop and have it work?
Are all the cables connected securely? Can your desktop connect to a different monitor and work with that one? (May have to ask a friend or neighbor for help here.)
I'm home. :(
I have a lot of thinking to do.
Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges.
Yes, the external monitor works with the laptop (that's what I'm using now). The desktop only gives the black screen of death with the blinking cursor. I double- and triple-checked all the connections and got the same result. I really do think the computer is kaput; it just doesn't sound right. It's much quieter than normal.
All in all, it's not too surprising that the desktop went bye-bye, assuming that's what happened. It's at least 5 years old and is actually not as good as my laptop. Between two half-working computers I have a functional computer. All in all, I guess it could be worse. :)
So, on the one hand, LA weather.
On the other hand, watching an Australian Shepherd puppy play and slide in the 1" of snow out there.
I think I'll stick with our weather... for today, at least.;)
Blinking cursor and quietness suggests to me a hard drive failure, sorry... Hope it was backed up? As for replacing the drive, it's a very easy thing to do - $50-100 for a new drive, about 10 min. of work to swap out old for new, then the fun of reinstalling an OS.
While you (or your favorite computer handy-man) has the case open, also suggest checking the fan and giving it a good cleaning as well.
Fixing a laptop screen (depending on what part is kaput) is also possible - can usually find the part on eBay. I know Mr. DA has replaced a Dell screen before.
All right, I'll be honest, I've kinda been waiting for Ymo to mention what he thought of Saturday night. Sorry I couldn't sit with ya!
Hmmm...interesting. People want to hear what I have to say?
Okay...thought it was pretty good. The general story was someone late in the Boston Marathon questioning why they are running it. I liked the device of using different voices in someone's head trying to tell them what to do. It did a good job of leading you down the path of hitting the runner's "wall". The one area I saw for improvement was the part where "The Runner's" thoughts were naming the names of children. I thought it might be more effective if they were more vocal with the names. This would have shown a little earlier that the decision was definitely to continue on. My two cents...
Bleah.
Today just isn't going the way I'd hoped.
Mainly, I'd hoped to have more motivation for all the work I'm supposed to be doing at, well, work.
Bleah.
That is all.
I have this wonderful Epson printer/scanner/copier (Stylus Photo RX500) that has slots for memory cards in it. If it happens to be on before I turn the computer on, I get the "black screen of death." As soon as I saw your post, I remembered that the printer was on when I rebooted my desktop. I've actually had the very same problem before, but it's been a few years. I checked again (with the printer turned off this time), and the computer is working fine now. The false alarm has prompted me to back up the contents of my hard drive, though. :o
That's interesting. I've heard from several people that it's more expensive to replace the screen than to just buy a whole new computer. I'd prefer to replace the monitor, if it can be done. It was one of those strange situations where you restart the computer and suddenly the monitor wasn't working any more.
Lavabe, how goes it with your pipe repairs? Sorry to hear of it; trying to get caught up with latest LTE flurry.
I presume ShamWow cleaned up the mess in seconds flat?
There is a reason why people all over the world turn to the DBR OT board to solve their technical problems! It is because you get some of the best help in the world from people who care about you, and it is free!
On that note, I recently subscribed to Carbonite.com for automatic backup, and it give me great peace of mind. On the other hand, a company that I am involved with will shortly be releasing a mouse that will include a secure backup methodology, built into the mouse! They showed it at the resent CES show and it was widely applauded.
Just to let you in on a backstage secret, what's in the pot is cold Folgers instant. I triple dog dared everyone to take a sip but no one would.
This is true - there are a lot of worried folks around here this week.
Our group is just getting re-organized; and the work that a lot of my colleagues have been doing for the past year may have been for naught, but... like you said, I'm thankful.
And my stuff is sticking around, having been deemed "essential to the future of [the product/service/feature.]" :D
Glad to hear that you job is secure! I feel for your colleagues, though; there are few things I find more frustrating than putting hours of work into a project only to have it tossed. I can only imagine how it would feel to have that happen to a year's worth of work.
At the risk of bumping us to the Main Board, I noticed that the UConn women beat the UNC women. From here we go to Great Moral Dilemma: what do we wish for the outcome of this particular matchup? Personally, I don't want to see either team win. Whoever wins, I'm bummed because they won. There's no positive outcome that I can see. Do the rest of you have this same problem?
DukePA, please don't hate. Feel the love. :D
IMHO, it's irrational to hate insurance companies. I can understand hating a particular insurance company for some perceived injustice. And some companies don't behave ethically. But painting all insurance companies with the same brush of hate is a bit extreme. Many of them provide a valuable service.
Somewhere along the way, many people got the mistaken idea that insurance companies should pay for everything claimed, and that they should only charge a de minimis premium. Insurance is just a giant transfer mechanism. A bunch of people pay premiums so that a few can be covered for losses.
The contract defines what is covered. How much the insurance company charges is based on the terms of that contract. We can usually purchase more comprehensive coverage at a higher premium.
I certainly don't know the terms of Lavabe's policy, and so I'm not in a position to judge whether his water damage should be covered or not. I sympathize with his predicament and wish he could be reimbursed by his insurance company for the water company. But we really need to examine the terms of his contracts to know whether or not the damage should be covered.
Okay, sorry for venting. I'll get off my soap box now.
No surprise there. Even if they did handle some of your repair costs, you might find a significant increase in your premium next year, or no coverage at all. Heck, I have read that by simply discussing a claim or filing a claim, even if denied, will result in a rate increase or no coverage the following year.
Dangerous combination today:
Office closed.
Lots of caffeine-rich beverages.
Lots of unread journals,
Unfettered access to the DBR.
:D:o
I keep honey in my office. For some reason, this jar of honey is getting thick and opaque. I thought honey never went bad. But I've noticed this once or twice before on other jars.
Is the funky honey still okay to use?
You're right and I usually don't hate. Guess that was my version of venting. I actually have a great auto insurance company. It's USAA. They're not-for-profit and are very fair. They actually do what they promise and don't treat me like a criminal if I file a claim. Medical insurance, on the other hand is a different story. I used to work for a third party administrator many years ago and was constantly discouraged by the insurance company acting in what I considered to be bad faith and doing everything they could not to uphold their part of the contracts held with their clients. I know there are great insurance companies out there and I don't really hate them all. Just an immature moment on my part :o
Is there anyone else out there watching the Inauguration? I lovelovelove this event. Not just because the guy I was rooting for won, but just for the symbolic nature of the transition of power, and all the pomp and ritual surrounding.
The National Mall is the most crowded I've *ever* seen it - even the side streets are packed! CNN was saying the powers that be are going to get a satellite picture from space to do crowd estimates. They were also saying that this will be the most-watched televised event, ever, in the history of television. The world really is watching.
No worries. I save my hate for the wrong shade of blue. ;)
I too have USAA for auto, home, and life insurance. My experience with them has been very positive.
Health insurance is a complicated mess. I wish we could simplify the entire system. At the risk of straying to the PPB, I think a big part of the problem is that we want and use more services than we want to pay for. The other big part of the problem is inefficiencies, greed, and corruption.
Uh oh, here I go again . . .
The other big problem is doctors order or perform tests that aren't needed in order to protect themselves from malpractice suits. Patients seem to think that doctors should be perfect and God-like. Sorry, they are only human and sick people often die due to no fault of the doctor or hospital. </end rant
I'm back at work today. Sad. :(
I had a hard time focusing in my meetings earlier, but then again they were back to back to back (all related) and a total of 4 hours.
Sigh.
Where is the post game PW rush?
Well I had to pick up a pizza on the way home. I'm back now. :D
Did anyone notice that we're back to 5 stars?
Glad to be back from icy Durham! The worst roads I saw were my street and the street connecting to my street. The others were clear with no traffic!
I've asked Dukegirlinsc to join our little party here on the LTE. Hope she starts posting again.
Folks, the screaming howler panic monkeys are starting to come out on the EK Board.
Who wants to revive the "It's Over" thread? :D
Where are all the insomniacs?
Get better Sue!
Attachment 605
Yes, maybe an explanation of the ad might make some sense. But I refuse to click and find out anything about that ad, in fear of a sudden trojan attack. It's happened to me before from a DBR ad. Nothing that my antivirus couldn't catch, but scary nonetheless.
Cheers,
Lavabe
Today may not be so productive (on the OTB, that is) as the office is open again this AM;).
