Yeah, the browser is fine, but the display proportions are a little off, and there aren't enough options on the settings menu to remedy that. Worth the $5 though.

Hadn't posted here in a while. Good to see Fish80 return. Am I still leading him:o;)?
I purchased an Amazon Kindle last week before traveling. I am a huge fan! If you're another of those people who packs a suitcase full of books then this is the gadget for you.
My girlfriend did not dump me; in fact, she sympathized rather strongly. Also, someone evidently told Walter that I needed a snuggle yesterday, because he was particularly affectionate. I also got a couple of small kernels of good news, so things seem to be looking up (knock on wood).
Speaking of browsers, I downloaded the new version of Firefox today and so far I like it a lot. Other than some nifty cosmetic changes, the biggest change I've noticed is that it allows you to save your tabs so you can restart Firefox with all of the same tabs open.
Anybody else using it?
I will probably download it tonight. I am using it too much right now to go through the update process...my IE is sucking. Java won't work at all with it and no solution has been forthcoming.
What, no threads on the long-awaited release of IE8 Beta 2? ;)
Dang - looks like I missed something big happening on the PPB today... Earljam is (temporarily) banned!? Mild-mannered, goofy EJ?
Anyone care to give me the skinny on what happened? Feel free to send via PM if necessary.
Hey, it's 4:34AM on the East Coast -- who's next to get up? Is Lexington, KY on East Coast or Central time?
Lavabe normally would be the next up, but since his move to KY I 've noticed he has been here as early as often. Maybe having to wind his way through boxes, etc. has made it a little more difficult. Lexington is Eastern.
Good lord, man, what are you doing up so early? What am I doing up so late?!
5 AM is my normal hour these days. I do go to bed around 10 PM or so...
This is my JJ Redick post, which means I will be offline(or not posting) for a while.
I doubt it was on the PPB. A thread he started was deleted from the OTB (I know because that subtracted 2 off of my post count -- I'll never get to 7000 now! ;)). I'm sure he just triggered an infraction threshold due to some minor inappropriateness issues, in which case he'll be back in a day or two.
I _strongly_ suggest against a petition.
A day without EarlJam? How am I supposed to survive that?
What?! I am shocked. Shocked I say. I celebrate the man's entire catalog.
My only response is this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJQVlVHsFF8
He can act, he can sing, he can scout talent, he looks great in fur.
Question. Was he more drunk filming that video or eating the burger off the floor?
That makes mph AND Bostondevil who should be banned for dangerous youtubing.;)
Y'all are seriously harming the LTE.
Where did the EarlJam poll go? Maybe someone opened one of those 5th dimensional portals like they did in the twilight zone, except it's the EJ dimension. All things jammy are getting sucked into it.
Yeah, I've always been a fan of jelly...jam not as much.
There hasn't been an EJ post today, has there? I hope he's not off pouting because of his spanking. :p
I think EJ reads this thread but he only posts here every once in awhile.
EJ's ban has been lifted. I'm sure he's just easing his way back in. I have had a couple of mod-inspired, self-imposed interludes of exile myself. I'm sure we haven't heard the last of the deranged genius.
What are the lineups again?
ECU 27,VA Tech 22. I'm pretty sure my brain is gonna hurt tomorrow. Hopefully the Blue Devils bring it home tonight, too.
In support of my two alma mater's football teams, I have changed my av. At such point that they are no longer both undefeated, I will return to my regularly scheduled kitten photo. (Yeah, I know this is important news...probably should have had them put up an article about it.)
I kind of miss the kitten avatar.:(
On the other hand, will you change your avatar after Vandy loses? If so, will the Duke part become larger, or will it retain its half-avatar size?;)
Cheers,
Lavabe
Why is a Kanye West song drifting around in my brain?
I wouldn't want to accuse anyone of that, what with asking around if anyone here had the winning ticket and all.
Nice BTTT...did this one fall off the front page?
God bless Labor Day...this has been my post prolific posting day in ages.
I've been busy but not overly so. I don't think it fell off the front page as most of the posting activity here has been focused on a few threads. (Okay, okay 17 posts today, I have been busy.)
What would you have done w/o Palin-BabyGate on the PPB??
Actually, it's been a great Labor day here too. Finally got out to do some much needed shoe shopping, and actually found some shoes I liked! Seriously, this is the first time in 18 months that I've bought a pair of shoes. (Sandals excepted.) I even found a pair to replace my old trail-hikers that are 5 years old and on their last legs.
I normally hate shopping (no, really - hate retail, hate crowds, hate trying things on) so I'm extra enthused that I found stuff that I liked, and was out and back in under 2 hours. Sweet!
Now, time to make the babyback ribs! :D
Good things all (except BabyGate...nothing incenses me so much as being told how I feel:mad:). I had fallen off in recent months, so I don't feel bad about a blitzkrieg kind of day. Plus, class starts tomorrow, so I won't have as many such opportunities for a while (although those marathon library days do require regular study breaks;)).
Basically, there's a ginormous debate/[urinating] contest re: Sarah Palin's daughter's pregnancy, and I (along with others) have been accused of expressing "glee" because Palin the younger is with child. Myriad accusations of hypocrisy, sanctimony, etc. hurled all over the place, in all directions...in other words, typical PPB stuff. As for why I got involved today, well, I couldn't really tell you.
A little...that's been mentioned recently on the Dark Side too. I don't intend to venture over there a whole lot in the near future, because a) I don't have the time, b) I don't care to, as I said earlier in this thread, be told how I feel, c) the entire board consists of people either puffing their chests out in agreement with each other of attempting to convince the unconvinceable, and d) any and every thought of the election, politics, etc. just stresses me out these days anyway.
I even ventured over there today and contributed a few times to that thread. What a war zone! I left the debate when group one made the point that group two policy was a failure and their policy was right. After being challenged by group two with a hypothetical situation where group one policy failed, it was met with the argument that the same rules did not apply or were not rational or some such nonsense. WTH?
Yes.
We school starting up this week for the kids and it being the first of September and all, I started thinking about what I might have accomplished in the last year. (Resolutions aren't just for January 1.) Anyway, I think starting this thread is probably one of the most lasting things I've done. Now, how should I feel about that? Is it sad? Or is it kind of a cool thing?
I can't decide.
3,478 posts and counting. I certainly wouldn't feel down about this thread. It has become a community within this community. And it just made me realize that my freshman year, there was a radio station that ran an ad that had the ultimate punchline, Don't be a Deke. I always thought that meant don't be a member of that fraternity. But I am sure what they really meant was don't be a Deac. That knowledge, gained 19 years later, is well, priceless.
I just learned about the existence of Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. Is this college named after EarlJam? Is EarlJam a quaker?
Y'all are starting to remind me of my dad, the worst punster alive. Isn't that true of everybody's dad?
I'm a triple dad, and a punster on a downward spiral into the depths of pundom. (Curiously, for pundom spell checker suggests random condom kingdom.)
My daughters want me to write a book of bad puns.
I'm struggling with the title. My Best Book of Bad Puns? Punitive Puns Gone Horribly Wrong? Fishing For Puns?
One of the many plays I have had produced is a short holiday themed comedy entitled Round John Virgin.
This may belong on the PP board:
There's much concern about the vetting of Sarah Palin. Fred Thompson revealed last night that McCain drove a 'vette. Perhaps he took Sarah for a ride, thus throughly vetting Mrs. Palin?
Let me try hijacking this back to the main topic of this thread ...:eek:
With much credit to Yogi:
We have worked very hard to avoid the PPB (and at least some of them have tried hard to avoid us). No one goes to the PPB; it's too crowded. :D
Any more Yogi-isms out there?
Cheers,
Lavabe
Pretty busy in here today and on the OTB. Soon BD will hit the 1000 post mark.
Never considered.
If I'm going to be serious about this, and I do not mean to disparage, but 'Mother and Child' isn't that great a title. If it were on a double with 'Round John Virgin' is would work but by itself, well.
I have theories on titles. I think the best title is going to give you a hint of what to expect even if you know nothing about the play (or movie) before you walk into the theater.
Examples of titles I think work very well:
The Dark Knight, you just somehow know this will be action with a moral base and not light-hearted (about anything, it turns out).
What the Butler Saw. Is anyone here familiar with this Joe Orton play? If not, take a guess as to genre. Spoiler tags - It's a farce and there is not butler anywhere in the thing. Could a title this cliche be anything but? I say no.
And tooting my own horn, could Round John Virgin be anything but a Christmas themed comedy?
Craptastic titles? If it's got the word Extreme in it, it's bad. Same with Maximum. Extreme Measures, anybody remember that movie? Remember what it was about? If not, take a guess. I bet you will be wrong.
The Ice Storm, while not exactly a terrible title, it didn't work for the movie, because I can't remember which of two movies was actually called that. Was it the suburban repressed '70s in Connecticut movie (Kevin Kline, Joan Allen, Christina Ricci, Sigourney Weaver) or was it that hero must get out of town John Cusack movie? Or were they both called The Ice Storm?
Here's one that worked but was changed when it came out on video to something terrible - Last of the High Kings great little indie coming of age film written by Gabriel Byrne (and directed? I think so.). Came out on video as Summer Fling, all kinds of wrong, cause it's so not a cookie cutter teenage sex comedy.
The John Cusack movie was The Ice Harvest. Ice Storm was an okay title for the other flick, only because the storm was key to some strange denouement, IIRC. There wasn't much other action in the flick, so there weren't too many options as to how else to name it.
I think Round John Virgin is an *excellent* title. :D
What a weekend of sports:
College football
NFL
MLB pennant races
Sprint Cup action
and the best news for us ...
... we get our first HDTV today.:D:D Even better... we're getting BluRay as well.
I wonder if FIGHT CLUB comes on BluRay.
Cheers,
Lavabe
P.S. That McCain drinking game is deadly.:D
Oh yeah ... looks like that Vandy avatar might be a good luck charm, eh?
a) Congrats on Bluray...but boo for Sony. Looks like they won't have a player for much less than $400 going into the holiday season. Which is what us HD DVD advocates warned about. It'll be late 2009 before they have a player that will hit mass market pricing.
b) Here's hoping that the Duke-Vandy matchup in late October is a surprise contest of unbeatens...which means Vandy needs to upset currently #2 ranked Georgia on the road and current #9 Auburn at home.

Did I mention that my oldest son is playing freshman football at the famous Newton North high school this year? Did I mention that 8 days into his football career he broke his wrist at practice? Poor guy. He got pancake blocked and hit his wrist wrong when he fell. It's a hairline fracture and he's out 4-6 weeks. In some ways though, he's getting the best of both worlds. He's officially on the team but he doesn't have to take anymore hits until October. He can do non-contact drills at practice. This afternoon he gets to stand on the sidelines wearing the jersey but no pads at the first game.
Sometimes when I read the main board I think "Who are these people?"
Movie quote.
"Do you ever get the feeling there's something going on we don't know about?"
Could someone please summarize the first 177 pages of the thread? I don't want to go back and read them all but don't want to feel left out. Maybe a concise one paragraph.
I wasn't really quizzing. I just often think of that quote. It's one of my all time favorites.
Welcome Turk and monkey.
I summarized the thread the last time somebody new joined us. Anybody else want to take a stab this time?
Oh, the quote is from Diner. Kevin Bacon says it Mickey Rourke.
Unless someone else beats me to it, I do promise a summary the next time I'm up to it. I am too tired to be cleverly concise this evening. Just don't leave us before I get to it, monkey.
How come you can only edit your most recent post? I'm fairly generous with the typos and some of them I don't catch right away.
A little bit too much bourbon is the best amount of bourbon. Especially when it was a birthday present.
I can't believe Fish80 swam ahead of me last night/this AM:o.
Lavabe has moved into second or perhaps has been in second without me noticing. Only 55 behind me...
Hey, whatever happened to our PW'ing marathon?
Yeah, but I'm running out of steam and with Hanna headed our way, I may lose power tonight.
Here are a few random recollections about things in this LTE thread from my very biased and diseased mind.
Yogurt comes up from time to time, but few really enjoy talking about it.
Devildeac is obsessed with my post count in the LTE. :D
Lavabe knows bones and primates and many things.
Rumors of the Atlanta Mafia abound although I doubt it exists.
I like to talk about my puppy and raccoon skulls.
It's okay to post just to amuse yourself.
You get bonus points if you post something funny or clever.
Bostondevil gives away prizes.
Once in another thread EarlJam promised me a pony I've yet to receive.
Did I mention my puppy?
Wilson strays over to the PP board from time to time.
Don't worry, be happy. :)
I like airplanes almost as much as EarlJam. The 737 is a good plane. I wonder how many of them are parked in the desert?
Ymo brings the ball upcourt and sets the play.
He spots Devildeac open on the wing in Raleigh, just inside of JJ range, he delivers a perfect draft, err, pass to DD on the "whatever thread."
DD sets his feet, squares his shoulders and the shot is in the air from 25 feet (well, miles:o)...
Was the shot good? Bluedawg in my sights...
I've flown on a lot of 737s. Does that count for anything?
I'm trying to use up what I have left. I have a First Class round trip to any where in the world left if I plan far enough in advance...haven't figured out where to go yet.
Congrats. The process of deciding where you want to go should almost be as fun as the trip itself.
I just got an email from Continental yesterday informing me that they are making their frequent flier program less consumer friendly. What's worse, they are moving to a $15 fee for the first checked bag. I travel with a college debate team and this policy will be a killer. We take Rubbermaid tubs full of evidence on trips and this policy would cost us an additional $240 on most trips, not counting what we already will have to pay for the second checked bag. By the time we account for all of our evidence, we'll end up paying more than $500 in luggage fees for most of our trips.
Yikes, debating just got expensive. Delta is still holding out on the first checked bag fee.
The ECU mother[freak]in' Pirates won tonight, handily. Mountaineers, Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium is thy Waterloo.
The Big East, the second worst BCS football conference
wilson is currently mired in the Civil War.
Look at my post count.
Instead of coming up with the second best post in history describing this thread, because really, who needs that kind of pressure, I wrote a play tonight. It's the first draft of my submission to this year's Boston Theater Marathon and it's called Heartbreak Hill.
Man, I've been away from the LTE for a couple of days, and return to a total posting frenzy! And even better, I don't think I saw a single BB post in the 4 pages of new ones - we're making up ground (unless he's been on a tear in the EK/PPB boards.)
Had a super-fast trip down to Portland yesterday to catch up with some Dukie friends and sample some local brews. If I remember what I had, I'll summarize in our favorite beer thread. :)
BB has been conspicuously absent while BD has been writing plays. I have had to carry much of the load for the Boston Tea Party. Though BD has contributed a good share.
Well, it is a 10-minute play, those are my specialty, but yeah, I wrote it one sitting. I had been thinking about it for awhile. It's completely autobiographical, hopefully coming soon to a stage near you.
Hey, how do ya'll like my new signature? Am trying out with my friends on the LTE.
Nice pic!
By the way, you are officially managing my DBR NASCAR team. Please e-mail selections by appropriate deadlines. K thx! (I keed, I keed, but you are kicking my butt!)
I did nominate September 9th as the official PW day. Let's set the record. Of course, I have no idea what the record is, but let's set it anyway. How many posts should we go for in this thread on Tuesday? How about 500?
Wait, what's bb's total? Let's shoot for passing him on Tuesday, that's a good goal.
Ahh, DA you doubt? The impossible can happen...
On the way into work this morning, I started singing along to 'Go Your Own Way'. I feel so unclean.
Luckily I caught myself after just a couple of bars and changed stations. Somebody was playing XTC. I love XTC. Nerd rock rules!
What's gotten into me today? I'm trash talking on sports threads!
Okay, all, a bit of a change of subject. For all of you who have beneficiaries of the DBR Good Karma Tsunami, how has your situation continued to play out? In my case, VERY well. The new job absolutely rocks! Have the rest of you fared as well as I have?
Wow, my 1000th post is rapidly approaching. I need to think of something.
Whatever it is, it has to be here.
Here it is - number 1000
Monkey, please pay attention.
A couple of weeks ago, the idea was floated to have a day where we all went crazy in the LTE. Post as many times as possible in the span of 24 hours. I suggested September 9th as the day. Well, we never made it official, but I will start things off, again.
Way back in December 2007, BD had the idea to encourage PWing on a scale not yet seen at DBR. We were to pull together and leave threads like Duke's new football coach and President W's mispronunciation of Battier in the dust. Anything was fair game here except anything that belongs on the PPB because here, we all just get along. It started with PopTarts, it quickly deterioated into insults. The insults were fun but ultimately not sustaining. We've been through yogurt and movies and snow and NASCAR and self-congratulatory accolades. I think devildeac has the record for consecutive posts. Whenever the thread drops to the second page somebody bumps it in disbelief, not always the same person.
We have become a group of 21st Century friends. We know each other fairly well even though I couldn't pick anybody but Tilly, CathyCA, and devil84 out of a lineup. Tilly's name isn't actually Tilly but I think I called her that several times when I met her. I suspect she thinks of me as BD. There have been requests for good vibes and we've virtually helped each other move and take new jobs. There used to be many more threads that petered out after 3 or 4 posts, I think most of those random ideas wind up here these days. Some topics die quickly, some linger, some go away only to reappear weeks or even months later. Fleetwood Mac is one of these. You don't have to read all 180 pages to catch the drift around here. At least I think you don't. I believe you can jump in and go from here.
Lavabe has moved from Atlanta to Kentucky. ArkieDukie moved too. billybreen has been MIA for awhile, I'm starting to worry about him. Tilly keeps everybody sane. EarlJam keeps us all insane. There's a lot of comparisons of Macs and Microsoft but I'll be honest, I forget who's who in that argument. Dogs are owned, cats are owned. Babies, not so many, but we welcome the occasional cute kid story. Blublood usually supplies those.
So here's to you, all of my internet friends. I wouldn't have made it to 1000 posts without you. Have a virtual drink on me.
Congratulations on 1000 posts, BD. :):):)
It is fitting that is on the LTE - what a great idea you had. :)
Congratulations on 1000 posts, BD. :):):)
It is fitting that is on the LTE - what a great idea you had. :)
Sorry for the double post - but you deserve double the congrats!
I second the congratulations. A fine post for number 1000.
Well, I've been PWing tonight, only not here! I'm off to bed but I will pick up my end of the stick tomorrow morning.
And huzzah to you, BD, for 1,000 posts and for creating a special inner sanctum of the neighborhood pub that is DBR.
I confess, this is the first thread I check every time I come to the boards, and lately, is the only thread I read for a couple days at a time.
We took a 2 and 1/2 hour break. Excellent post for 1000 Boston Devil. I'm with 2535Miles, you should write stuff.
A little too early for me, but I do have a brief drink story. Years ago, I stopped by Boston to visit several friends who were going to HLS. We stopped by the Hong Kong and had some Scorpion Bowls. I thought they were nothing at first but got hit by them as I reached the bottom stair. And this is when I was in good drinking shape having just finished up my stint with the West Pointers and all. Well, I went back there a few weeks ago and nothing. And they didn't hit my by the bottom stair. They were just a nice tasting drink that I now fear to admit I had in public(not manly enough).
Double posting is not a crime, the limit is three:D. Does that make dd a criminal? Perhaps the judge will have to rule on that one.
BD- I can still edit my prior post, so I think there is a time limit rather than a post limit. I've hit three and no one else is here so that is all the PW'ing I can do for now. Hopefully someone picks up the baton soon...
A great milestone post, and very well-written. Like you, I'm amused by the topics that disappear and reappear. References to Fleetwood Mac make me laugh. I have recently gotten hooked on Facebook to keep connected with my various "real" friends, and I read this thread to keep up with my virtual friends. Kudos to all who have kept it alive.
When I posted the preceding post, I noticed that it put me at 599. At the risk of sounding like Monk, I had to post once more to make it an even 600!
Edit: It's also an even 3600 posts for the thread!
