That's funny. Easy to keep the two groups separate as the Mennonites are the ones who make the deodorant and the Amish grow the peaches.
Interesting fact (this one happens to be true) that some Amish are migrating up our way because they like the price of land...not sure how the vehicles will fare in the mud, though.
Jesus. Some of the folks on the basketball side should have all the sharp objects and shoe strings removed. Basketball literally put food on our table growing up. It can't mean more to them than me. But damn. Lighten up Francis.
Weird stuff happens on the road man. Traveling is weird. The other team shoots better and plays with more intensity. You're out if your routine. The rims are different. The temperature is different. Road games are HARD. In high school the 2nd and 3rd best team in our conference were really good. We had more success at the state level (1 state championship and another finals appearance). But they were excellent and had top 10 teams in the state as well. And both made a Final 4 (we beat one of them on a halfcourt buzzer beater or one of them would have made a final). So my teams went 2-6 against them at their place and 7-1 at ours. No surprise. But we also (and so did they) lost to the last place team on the road a couple of years. Because road games are HARD.
Well, this absolutely stinks.
I don't think it's always about the specific team, game, players and coaches.
For example, NC State football has no business losing to a schools like Wake Forest or Duke. Neither Duke nor Wake take football all that seriously. Admit it, football is second place at best. Maybe third place at Wake behind baseball, or even fourth place at Duke behind WBB and Lacrose. Ok, maybe a bit of poking there...but you understand my point. You don't get the 55k fans to sell out your football stadium. When you host nearby rivals, your stadium could see as many away fans as home team fans. It's not about the talent on the field that causes fans to make these comments, it's about the culture of the schools.
State fans pride ourselves on being almost not mediocre at football where outside of some exceptional Grobe years at Wake and every now and then at Duke, no one would consider those teams to be even mediocre.
It's a bit like a UNC basketball fan saying "we should win easily" when we play NC State in basketball. They believe it with every fiber of their being that they are not only better than NC State, but vastly better. To lose is an indication that something is not right with the universe.
Of course, we all know that pride goeth before the fall, which makes upsets so much fun. To see the braggart humbled.
Just saw Idiot Neighbor #1 chewed out by one of our nice neighbors, very fun and gratifying.
Football is second place, at best, in the entire ACC. No school that claims to care more about football than basketball belongs in the ACC. So, while I agree with your point that neither Duke not Wake take football all that seriously, neither does NC State. If they did, they'd join the SEC. Granted, because of all the brain damage, I don't think Duke should have a football team at all. I feel the same way about NC State. Taking football seriously is for the brain damaged - and the SEC.
That looks familiar
Schoolhouse Rock turned 50 on Friday. Where did the time go?
As you can tell from my current avatar, I’m a fan.
I feel like the Aerosmith vs The Eagles thread is mostly a listing of made up bands I have never heard of. Some of them I have heard mention of, but have no idea about their music. Case in point: Jothro Tull was mentioned. No idea. I know a decent amount about Jethro Pugh (Cowboys football player Bart Starr ran over in the Ice Bowl). But nothing about the other dude. Also that devolved into groups everyone liked best. That could have been a fun discussion. Instead they made it turkey.
Y’all seen that infrared video of a cat farting on a bed?
Let's go LIONS!

Read a recent biography of Robin Hood that concluded he actually robbed from the rich because the poor didn’t have anything to take.

One of the greatest lines in TV history: "Blimey, this redistribution of wealth is trickier than I thought!"
May have posted this before, but when I was in 9th grade Civics, our teacher gave a us a quiz on the preamble to the Constitution. You could hear people humming to themselves as they wrote.

I always laugh when I hear Tyrannosaurus Debt...1994 the debt was $4 trillion. Now not even 30 years later it's closing in on $32 trillion. To the moon!

Sigh, all fun and games...
waiting for the furnace man to show up. yawn. "Responsible" fossil fuel use.
My offspring interviews for a position at the Kennedy Center today. Fingers crossed!
Well, my couple MegaMillions tickets didn't resolve any issues, so back to reality.
What was your stake in the game?
I hope no one is traveling today on commercial aviation. I’ve never managed to be delayed or be bumped from a flight believe it or not. Part of the reason is traveling with my beautiful wife. She does not take no for an answer. The one flight we missed out of Hawaii we caught the The next flight by bumping a pregnant couple from Chicago. No “Karen” involved, a touch of Hannibal Lechter, perhaps.
As I've said, I don't gamble--even for pastries on DBR. I'll make more putting the money in a basic checking account in a large bank. The cash value for Mega Millions has to rise by $107,000,000 for a single ticket to be a break-even proposition.
For those of you that believe in the lottery and live in NC, I would encourage you to buy your tickets in VA or SC. Both are anonymous states while NC is not. While NC loses the bonus money for selling the winning ticket, you will do your civic duty with the 4.75% income tax. VA lets you buy tickets online, which means you can do it from the welcome center rest stop at the I-85 or I-77 border or any fast food joint in the state. Alternatively, if your VPN is kind, you can buy them from your home if VA or MD pops up.
If I win this lottery drawing, I pledge to donate all money to Carolina athletics.
Is there a Karen Building at Duke?
May suddenly have more free time...
I changed jobs last year to a large "tech" company whose primary business is getting goods to you without a physical store presence. I've been concerned since Day 1 about its health as I saw classic old school bloat similar to my days in manufacturing. But the $$$ are good while it lasts.
The two seats on front of us are often empty and when occupied, are rarely occupied by the same people twice in a season. Been this way for many years. No clue who owns them.
Last night, a father and daughter were in the two seats to the left of these (also our former other two seats before we dialed back a long time ago). They seemed happy sitting there until a 350+lb guy comes in on the left and takes over half her space. I had my coat in the seat in front of me, but removed it so the father could move over and she could be set free.
Late in the first half, an usher coming from the next section over asks about the other empty seat b/c there are two guys looking for their seats. Father and daughter have to shift back over and the two guys crawl over from the wrong entrance to get to the seats. The one on the left complaining as if it was everyone else's fault that they couldn't find their seats.
They looked like they were left over from the Hell's Angels that used to run in Durham back in the 70s. They sat down and leaned so far forward that the two elderly ladies to the right of them could not possibly see down court. This is an issue since we sit towards the corner, but usually everyone is courteous and aware of when they are blocking someone else's view. Not these guys, and the one on the left rested his hand on his knee so that his scaly, scabby elbow was literally in the face of the father to the left.
At halftime, they got up and a full three inches of left guy's butt crack was right in front of us. We were grossing out, but I really felt sorry for the elderly ladies b/c they got even more up close and personal with it when he passed on front of them (again, going the long way out through the wrong concourse exit). I am betting the one lady was wishing she had kept her mask on! The father/daughter team left before halftime, BTW, and never returned. I really hope they just sat somewhere else as there were quite a few empty seats last night.
Later, when Duke started coming back and the Duke students were chanting STAND UP! STAND UP! we were yelling, NO, NO, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD NOOO!!!!!! b/c every time he stood, we got mooned. Plus he was digging in his ear then eating his hamburger with the same hand, and I was fully expecting to see something crawl out of his hair.
Oh, and there was a game, too! Go Duke! I guess I got my $114 worth last night.
Cameron was built when the average American, um, width was a lot smaller. It can get crowded in there!
A few years ago, I sat next to a couple enormous BC football-playing alums/NFL players.

funny watching games on TV from new arenas where there aisles are numerous and huge, nearly as much open space as there is seating. Indeed, Cameron was built for the average 140 lb 1940 butt, not the buttosauruses you see everywhere today.
Stanford has a truly gorgeous campus. Really excited for my lecture.

Long conversation at the (retiree) breakfast club yesterday, something we've been tracking for years: the propensity for dentists to push technically valid but absolutely unnecessary procedures...we have an inside man who used to be on the state's dental review board which fields patient complaints. Enormous problem with dentists pushing revenue producing procedures that simply are not necessary. Now I know why there were so many dentists in my MBA class...I left a previous dentist because of ludicrous pressure he put on me for unnecessary stuff (e.g. four teeth which absolutely had to have crowns put on...15+ years ago, and they're still fine)...you really have to pay attention and learn when to say no, also not do something stupid and avoid fixing a real problem...I think I have my dentists trained now...
I've been scarce for a while here, but the denizens of this thread have been (both digitally and in fleshspace) fixtures in my life for like 15 years now, so seems appropriate to share and celebrate here now that I'm going to become a father in June.
Congratulations!
I took comfort when my kids were newborns that there are 7,000,000,000 on this planet, it can't be that hard to raise them to adult hood.
Now that they are both approaching their teens, I'm beginning to wonder any parent manages not to kill their kids in their pre-teen and teen years. I guess that's nature's way of making sure parents are happy when they become adults and leave the house.
Congrats! Just make sure to check the brand.

great news, Wilson !!! me, I hit the wing bar after the dentist, fill up all those crevices with stringy chicken meat.
Big important meeting I'm leading in ten! Wish me luck!
I used to take care of large groups of kids at a summer resort during my Duke years which very much explains the number of kids I have now.
wilson's post has reminded me that I've been meaning to point out that we blew right through the 15th anniversary of the thread in December. We'll have to do something next year for the Sweet Sixteenth instead.
Good luck Mtn!
Can’t wait to see the baby Wilson Viking picture.
I thought Wilson abandoned us because of something Clem did, a reasonable supposition all else being equal.
Congratulations!!!
I wonder which it will be???

Congratulations to Wilson. Reminds me of the last gender reveal party I went to. I did… To a smattering of polite applause.
Out driving in the pretty snow in Asheville. Love a good snow.
Everyone having fun doing their taxes?
Did you hear?
I guess not.
Okay, and on to another subject.
Is there a writ of habeas maybeas?
And why is there a writ of Matt Damon + us?
Have you ever been to the firth of forth? Or had a fourth of a fifth?
Yes, and no.
If there can be silent lucidity, why can't there be silent stupidity?
Stupid is as stupid does.
a fourth of a fifth is simply two gin and tonics in the summer...
My brain went to four-fifths of a fifth.
Yes and yes 👍
When it is time for your robot vacuum to begin its appointed rounds, do you ever announce to the other residents of the household in your best Michael Buffer voice, "Let's get ready to Roooooooooomba!"?
Since you asked! Until the early 1980s (when, by the way, there were a lot fewer gins around) I"d make a good, basic G&T using one of the premium gins available at the time, either Beefeater or Tanqueray, the latter being a bit more floral due to different botanicals...then there was that fateful day!
The Boston Globe (1982 or so) did a fun survey of a bunch of their writers (not just the food snots, everyone...sports guys, tv writers, local reporters, etc). They blind tested a bunch of gins, maybe 10 or so IIRC for several categories: on the rocks, in a martini, and in a gin and tonic.
The results for the rocks and martini categories were as one might expect, Beefeaters and Tanqueray were dominant. But in the coveted G&T category, the prodigious runaway winner was little known (to me and them) Booth's gin. They raved about the crispness. So, skeptically, I tried it. The skepticism only mounted when I found it to be very inexpensive. (To this day, you can get the big 1.75 liter bottle for $14 at the New Hamster liquor stores for example). Gotta bend down low, it's WAY down on the bottom shelf.
For some reason, it produces a marvelously crisp G&T, really quite remarkable. I wasn't trying to enjoy it, but I certainly did, and still do. And in the ensuing 40 years, I must have converted at least 20 friends to using Booth's. (I heartily agree with the Globe writers, it's not good on the rocks or in a martini, its chosen mission in life is to make a truly splendid G&T.
So to finalize the answer: Get a Big glass (I like the large insulated kind), and fill it to the top with ice cubes, add three ounces of Booth's gin (bonus: it's 90 proof!), and finish it off with your chosen tonic...ours is still Schweppes (good grief, not the diet kind) though some these days favor stuff like Fever Tree..whatever you like. Just don't use the cheap crappy stuff like Polar or store brand...
And of course you definitely don't want to skip on fresh squeezed lime, all drinks get a full quarter of a lime...(bartenders who skimp on the lime shall be condemned to venues with loud, bad music). I usually add the lime after the gin, then pour the tonic to finish things off, get the best lime penetration. Try it!
p.s. Booth's is available in NC in the larger stores...
