I feel you there. Sure did hit the spot though.

There is only one thread on DBR that I truly despise.
Yay! Installation guys just left me with a brand, new, sparkly Miele dishwasher. Top of the line and quiet as a mouse. Husband-of-weezie will be thrilled as he loads the dishes tonight after dinner!
And then...he gets to empty it! Wow, he might even have a little tear in his eye.
I can't even read the coronavirus thread anymore.
And then I went and read the coronavirus thread, and posted something. And now I'm depressed. Again.
The Bruins lost in overtime last night. Also depressing
I am looking forward to the start of the Tour de France on Saturday with an insane amount of anticipation. For 3 weeks I get to spend my mornings cheering for whoever is leading the breakaway group to hang on, just like I do every year.
My favorite town in France is Dinan in Brittany.
San Antonio hotels are fairly busy this evening. Residents of Beaumont, TX and surrounding areas have evacuates in advance of Laura
It's an exciting day for The Drewsk. He was explaining to me earlier how things were able to escalate so quickly.
I have mentioned here before that The Drewsk is getting a PhD in hurricanes, right? Ok, OK, the department is called Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, but The Drewsk wants to study hurricanes.
Our problem: we retiled our kitchen years ago, and they had to beef up the floor, raising it a bit. Now only handicap height dishwashers fit. And we have white appliances. And everyone has worn out their dishwashers during COVID...

Ich spreche nicht sehr gut deutsch.
I learn enough travel talk in various languages to get by fairly well. I have found that if you make the effort to honor their culture by trying some introductory words and sentences, they usually respond in English. Except for small towns, then you may be on your own.
Since we are on appliances, how is the availability of counter depth refrigerators?
People who litter are the worst.
Woodsy Owl and Smokey the Bear - whatever happened to them??
I need to adjust the cabinet over my refrigerator so that I can get a new one. The refrigerators that I like are too tall for the current opening.
I would like a french door refrigerator but I may not be able to make the space work. I definitely want the freezer on the bottom.
You are getting a new laptop, they said.
It will work great, they said.
Currently a brick on a table, I said.
Maybe I spent too much time in National Forests growing up.
I'm so checked out at work. I just...don't care anymore.

Mowing the lawn in the upper 80s with God knows what humidity SUCKS.
My friends in Baton Rouge have marked themselves safe although they are still under a tornado watch. They did not have to evacuate.
I was just happy to hear from them, and also happy that they obviously had power because they marked themselves safe on FB.
FB may ultimately prove to be the 7th level of hell (can we say hell?) but that "mark yourself safe" feature is wonderful.
Aimed at no one here, I give my word, but
SHEEEEESH!

Is anybody else already worrying about we can make trick-or-treat happen this year? Just me?
Our strategery for Halloween is the same as New Year’s Eve and July 4th. We take our three Mini Shcnauzers to the basement to keep them calm, due to fireworks on the last two, and the doorbell ringing on Halloween. The only difference is that we turn off all lights for Halloween. We used to enjoy the kids and their costumes on Halloween until we got the dogs. Also, it didn’t help when some of the “kids” started appearing to be in their early 20’s.
kids are mostly grown around here. Years ago, in our sparsely populated neighborhood, a dozen or so kids would wander by. Then it became all about density (they must have commissioned a study on candy acquisition strategies) and parents would haul them off to condo projects where density reigned and mass quantities of candy could be collected with minimal movement.
Sitting in a parking lot. Waiting...
Halloween is a big deal where I live and I don't even live in the most active part of my city. I regularly give out about 10 bags of candy, a little less when it's rainy, a little more when it's a Friday or Saturday night.
I'm genuinely astounded that people think their opinions of the spork system warrant a 55-post thread.
See-saw, Marjorie Daw.
Hot and humid
Maybe this will jog your memory:

Never let facts get in the way of your narrative.
Yeah - but I don't think we got any of the snow in Boston. Were you still here? I can remember a whole bunch of white Thanksgivings and early November snows, none on Halloween that I experienced. I still had trick-or-treaters in 2011. I think I would remember taking them out in the snow.
It's a pretty humorous thread, I think.
Not sure if "how sporkz work" is on Throaty's pinned manifesto answering frequently-asked questions, but it should be. This seems to come up every so often.
Will there be special sashes to parade around in?
I vote for special sashes!!
Should we come up with a secret handshake too?
Denizens of the LTE should definitely have a secret handshake.
True story: I was in a sorority at Duke. We learned the secret handshake at initiation. We didn't always send a delegation to the national meeting but one year one of my chapter sisters was going to receive an award from the national organization so I think she went with the chapter president and one other sister. They found out that we had been doing the secret handshake wrong and it wasn't even close. We did decide to keep both and have a chapter secret handshake. I can remember one of the handshakes but not both and I'm not sure if the one I remember is the national one or the chapter one.
YOU try going down the driveway quickly to get the newspaper with a labrador retriever that thinks pouring rain is just about the best thing ever.
le Tour has started! 63 days late but better late than never.
We have rain!
I think I have a good guess as to what Greek organization you belonged to. I was an AEPhi, not an issue for me. But notice how I said I was an AEPhi, I guess I'm still an AEPhi, but other than keeping in touch with many of my sisters, I don't do anything official with the national organization and Duke doesn't have a chapter anymore.
Descents in the rain are pretty dicey.
While I’ll allow the obvious write in commentary about Goodfellas, what is Joe Pesci’s best movie role?
1) Vinny, My Cousin Vinny
2) Leo Getts, Lethal Weapon 2-4
3) Harry, Home Alone 1&2
Why?
Based on those choices, I'll go with Vinny. I loved his report with Fred Gwynne and his report with Marisa Tomei helped win her an Oscar. (report pronounced the French way.)
Atlanta United solo se transmite por Univision. Es hora de repasar mi español.
Should have probably sprung for a whole house humidifier instead of just a floor unit.
Mowed the lawn today. Probably could have skipped it.
I'm too fearless and handsome for this place 🇩🇪
I just watched the remake of Red Dawn. I'm woefully behind in watching movies.
Out of curiosity, how many DBR posters sprinkle salt on watermelon and cantaloupe?
In my defense, I had just been chatting in French with a friend on FB. ;-)
It has been quite a day. Glad it is over.
Also watched Castaway. I'm not sure I had ever seen the whole movie before.
He’s home! So thrilled.

I love this truck. It’s the first new vehicle I’ve ever owned...I got a stupid deal on it right as the 2019s (which were a full re-design) were hitting the lots. I’ve been nothing but pleased with it...rolled over 20,000 miles yesterday, and have had zero trouble or unhappiness with it. I’m planning to drive it for at least another 15 years.
It's funny, but if you ask me do I like the movie Love, Actually, I'll give you an unequivocal yes. But. I don't like the Liam Neeson/Thomas Brodie-Sangster story line (the kid is just too young) and I cannot bring myself to watch Laura Linney give up her chance with Rodrigo Santoro, so really, I only like some of that movie.
What is the secret to fabric softener?
He's supposed to be 10 or 11. I think the actor was actually 12, but the frantic run through the airport so he can say goodbye to a 10 year old girl (they mention her age in the concert scene) is just too much. Kids can have crushes at that age, but they usually aren't too scared to speak to them at school, that comes later. It's a story about 16 year olds played by ~10 year olds and that ruins it for me. Neeson does a fine job as the supportive stepfather, but the kids are just too young for the story line.
Season 25, This Old House...
I finished watching the sixth and final season of Community last night. I really enjoyed that show.
What should I binge watch next?
"Ted Lasso" Jason Sudekis on Amazon Prime plus- whatever it is. A rare SNL alum with actual humor rather than sneering wink-wink condescension.
Just now looked at this thread, so if this was recommended already, I apologize. My family and I have been watching Alone. They get ten people and drop them off in the middle of no where (at least 10 miles apart so they don't run into each other). The last one standing wins $500k. Each participant has a satellite phone to call for help and quit. All participants claim to be experts in survival techniques. It's really interesting. The newer seasons are on Netflix. The older seasons are on History Channel on demand. We watched the newest season first and then watched season one. The difference in strategy was fascinating. The people in the newer season had clearly studied and prepared for what was to come.
We've enjoyed several of the seasons as well. I haven't read the parameters and rules but infer that they ARE provided with a certain amount of food (rice, I gather) in addition to what they catch/forage and that they MUST call to have their health assessed in the event they suffer a cut, sprain, bite, etc. The contestants obviously assume personal liability but the show wants to get everyone to medical experts if they reach certain thresholds or have an accident.
It's usually pretty apparent which of the contestants aren't going to last more than a day or two (or fewer). It's often the people that just haven't spent a night alone in the woods and know how unsettling it can be. They've definitely had a number of incredibly talented, industrious, and innovative contestants from all sorts of different outdoors backgrounds. Sometimes the eventual winner is also pretty apparent (was there any doubt the dude that lived with the indigenous reindeer hunters for several years was going to do well in the Arctic?) but often the people that make it a while surprise (the angry plumber, who just made bad decision after bad decision and eventually placed second...)
Here is a full list of the rules and what they can take. Some things are standard for everyone and then there is a long list of optional gear but you are limited to ten items of the optional gear.
https://www.history.com/shows/alone/articles/gear-list
The most interesting part of the show to me is how the mental aspect of the game is harder than the physical for a lot of participants.
After about a month there is a standard health check once a week. A medic will be dropped in to take vitals and what-not. Also, someone is watching the cameras. If a contestant is seriously hurt and can't call for help, someone will come check on them but it could take as long as a day before help can arrive.
Survived the road trip west. Final route was: Indianapolis -> Madison -> Minneapolis -> Fargo -> Badlands -> Rushmore and Crazy Horse ->Yellowstone -> Chico, Montana and Missoula -> Spokane -> Seattle.
There are usually only a few contestants left by 40-50 days in and the longest a contestant has lasted is in the 80s.
It's interesting, the contestants in the later seasons have studied the previous shows and have baked in the approximate finish line to their thinking...which could be good or bad.
I don't want to give anything away, but I will say that there is a HUGE difference from season 1 to the last season. People watched the earlier seasons and came up with strategies on how to survive. They openly talk about how they decided what to bring and how watching earlier seasons guided them.
I forgot to mention, they have to film themselves. The case of camera equipment weighs 60 lbs and must be taken with them to their camp. This rule usually limits how far people are willing to make camp from where they are dropped off. Once the camp is established, they set up cameras around camp and take two with them wherever they go.
