ah, too bad...I got marooned on Ocracoke once (nothing like the Dorian situation), it didn't take much...gotta wonder how long the OBs can stay semi intact...

Er ist kaputt?
(Er being my tablet.)
Springer Point is open! Was our first stop. We picked up some trash (masks :-/ ) and took a little walk. Signs indicate that the preserve is actually expanding next year.
Some houses are gone. Several are in the process of being lifted - fascinating to see. The woman we rent from says it cost her $96k to lift her house.
Awesome! Not about having to pick up someone's discarded mask - that @#$%^!es me off to no end.
BUT, I love standing on the beach at Springer's Point, imagining Blackbeard's ship anchored nearby, the pirates coming ashore there to restock their fresh water supplies. How cool is that?!?
There was an episode of The Gong Show where every contestant sang that song.

Today’s moment of self-awareness: I would have been a pretty bad stevedore.
New tablet ordered. The last one was a faithful friend for 4 1/2 years.
Spent thirty minutes in the dark helping a stranger get a sting ray off their line and back into deep water.
It was a good day
Y’all have been warned:

reminds me of the time our heroic dog Trevor was on the beach at the OBs and scarfled down an entire jellyfish (he's a labrador, they do these things)...fortunately it came right out about 20 seconds later. Hazards of the ocean!
Hey, snow on the ground this morning, it begins!
Not going to stop now - I figure it has helped build up my immunities. Plus, who knows what fun germs I have eaten - for a while growing up, we washed our vegetables in clorox and were supposed to boil our water for 30 minutes* before drinking it.
* Our house tested worse than others on the compound - they just had to boil water for 20 minutes. I'm still sad that we didn't bring one of the huge tea kettles back with us.
I understand it's rainy and crappy back in Asheville, but here on Ocracoke it is nearly 80. Great weather for kayaking and beach walking.
What’s left of Zeta inbound. Going to be wet tomorrow.

Any press is good press?
Today, I am going to try and calm down. Even if only for today.
Two song titles come to mind this morning:
“Rainy Night in Georgia”
“The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” (no one got hung)
And based on recommendations from this thread, I bought strawberry pop tarts yesterday for the first time ever. No electricity for the toaster this morning. 2020. 😡
That caused me to actually look at the lyrics for Midnight Train to Georgia. L.A. = Lower Alabama?
I come to Ocracoke, and Asheville gets a tropical storm.
Very on brand, 2020.
No, but they're both profoundly OCD. Lawnmowing over the snow guy (who also rakes all his pine needles among about 250 pine trees) is different from OCD paved driveway guy (paved driveways are rare around here) who periodically removes a few leaves from his driveway NOT with a broom, but rather by riding his riding lawnmower up and down the driveway until the leaves scatter. That guy does happen to be socialism hating guy...when the Covid began back in March and I mentioned to him that I guess some things are going to get shut down (quite amiably) he hollered that "the only things we need to shut down are the media and the stock market." I guess his 401k had taken a beating.
Third neighbor is horse in the pool guy, typically has a travel mug of Crown Royal on his way home from work, he's too toasted to do much of anything, though he does love his multi purpose tractor.
I just voted. I did not take a sticker.
No good reason I can think of. OCD neighbor(s) need all things spotless and precise...here's another symptom, this one from neighbor #2, he who rakes pine needles. Yesterday morning he was laying out his reflective markers on his driveway for Plow Man to use this winter (not a bad idea), and while most folks just plunk in a marker every so often down the driveway, he was literally measuring out precisely equal distances between markers (with a tape measure) all the way down the 100+ yard driveway. Took him about 20 minutes to do what could have been done in two minutes.
p.s. my Volvo is almost 15 years old, going unwashed hasn't bothered it one bit. Savvy tip: sometimes I leave it out during big steady rains...
I have washed my current car more times in the just over 2 years I've owned it more than my prior vehicle in the entire 9 years I owned it. A new car wash went in that I pass at least twice a week. I can run it through the car wash and use the vacuum as many times as I want for a monthly fee.
It seems that every time I do a thorough cleaning of my car, some idiot decides to drive their car into my car, even if it’s parked. I decided to stop jinxing my cars.
I also only purchase silver or tan cars. As my son says, you can’t tell if it’s dirty if it’s the color of dirt.
I've owned blue, green, red, white, silver, gray and black cars. Never a brown or yellow car.
I'm a nutcase about having a clean car. Comes from growing up in Detroit. I recently had to break in a new detailer and it was nerve wracking until he realized he was dealing with a kook.
Yes, I live an extremely neurotic life.
blue and silver, black (NEVER again), and charcoal gray
It's snowing.
I concentrate my car care habits on what I deem important, e.g. appropriate oil changes, keeping all the mechanical stuff up to snuff, having good tires, etc. Seems to work fine.
OCD neighbor #1 visited some neighbors a couple years ago, a dog jumped onto the side of his car, left a minor scratch, and he nearly killed several people barreling down the road to buff out the scratch. Impressive.
Too many errands this morning.
Perhaps I'm one of the few who lives where they salt the roads?
Around here, there's a reason car washes offer a monthly payment price for unlimited washes.
TOH Season 6 - yes, I went backwards. And found myself uttering the phrase, "There is no way that meets code." as they toured the next house to be worked on.
Breaking in the new tablet.
Digging the name Whistlebinkies.
dump run accomplished! and bought Cheetos for election day
Corned beef and cabbage, hold the cabbage. Is that allowed?
Cleaning the garage and winterizing the outside bathroom.
lawnmower gas goes into the car for the winter...new (ethanol free, in your face, Iowa) generator gas shall now be procured, the cycle of (home) life.
I'm not sure I'd use the word "enjoy." I can be impressively lazy, but having lived in the same house for 30+ years, I know what needs to be done, and I do them, especially those things that need to be accomplished before snow sets in.
I am one part work, two parts congratulating myself on what I've done.
Tricking and treating, or nah?
We’re socially distancing handing out candy (via bowl).
We’re delivering candy via a tube. Sorta like mainlining.

This kind of tube?

Despite an explanation the before, the baby ignored daylight savings time.
5600 watts. Our area is prone to big wind and snow storms, we've lost power for five full days on several occasions...did not have the money 15 years ago to get the automatic, whole house generator (would've been $9k or so including buying a propane tank) so we had the house properly wired by an electrician and bought a Sears generator, all for just over $2k...doesn't do the whole house, but it does get the furnace working, fridge, lots of lights, more than enough to get by for days...easily rolls out of our walkout basement...
yesterday was the third anniversary (Halloween, 2017) of The Big Wind Storm when we lost about 150 trees, several on the house, 35 or so across the driveway (all 70 foot white pines), president of the power company had a photo op at the end of our driveway...not a fun day...
As such I always make sure I have a five gallon can of non ethanol gasoline, just in case...
I was out driving in Hill Country this morning:

dog does not recognize Standard Time vis a vis dinner time.
YouTube didn't listen, either. Online service premiered an hour earlier than we wanted.
It sounds like we are all being ignored.
Some of the quotes I've seen for whole house generators have been sizable. As far as Texas utilities go, our uptime has been pretty good and big storms while always possible haven't had much of an impact power wise. Part of that is being in a relatively new part of town where much of the grid is underground.
you may not be subject to our biggest fear factor, which is having the power go out for days AND the temps dip down to below zero...that would be ugly, pipes would freeze, damage would be considerable...hence the cheaper generator option which allows us to heat the house, take hot showers, keep our fridge going..
Snowing nicely now, expecting 7-11 inches by tomorrow morning, nice 25 mph winds now, too...by the end of the week it is expected to be sunny and around 60 degrees for five days in a row...that's how it is around here...
The cover cut does save me a couple hours a month.
Eight inches. Lovely, just shoveled. Meanwhile, this deserves at least some attention:https://www.thedailybeast.com/moscow...ith-a-crossbow
And now we have Hurricane Eta...
Sometimes, you just have to.
I'm just watching roadrunner/coyote cartoons at this point.
I was at work until 10pm. Horrible way to avoid the election result coverage. When I did get home, I picked a Hallmark Christmas movie.
Last night I finished one book that is due back at the library next week. The prolonging of the results will allow me to finish a second one also due next week.
Eta headed toward south Florida...
on my important mission to get ethanol free gas for the generator and lawnmower (in your face, Iowa), I saw my first giant (15 ft) inflatable Frosty the Snow Guy, Santa and Rudolph, so we're ready.
65 and sunny, several days after eight inches of snow.
70 degrees and sunny all week in Denver. I'm torn. I love this weather but want to ski.
I'm bumming - Niece's fiance asked for his ring back. I know she is hurting - but better 7 months out than 1 week out or 6 months after. I hurt for her,
Sorry about niece, but also, better now than later, so in agreement.
I have been moderately unable to function this week.
Talk about mixed messaging...
Attachment 11804
more mixed messaging: it's sunny and 65 now and my wife's car is in getting new snow tires
Thanks for all the thoughts for my niece. He's a good guy and we all like him but if it wasn't to be, better to know now.
Generally (since her car is the flagship of the fleet) we run summer tires in the warm weather, snows in winter...this year, because of the Covid (almost no driving) and the age of the snow tires (seven years) we just wore them down during the summer, away they go.
are you a professional builder? Man, the stuff I see that people do when building houses (we don't have building codes here for residences)...one neighbor built a house with no roof eaves, the roof just came down and ended flush with the outside walls...last year they almost had to tear the place down, there was so much mold and rot...
That was the back of my house before we put the second floor on. Well, without the mold and just a tiny bit of rot. I was diligent keeping that gutter clean, even going out during storms, standing on chair, and pulling a handful of leaves when it started overflowing.
Now we have proper eaves all around. And no silly, cosmetic valleys in the roof, either, despite our builder's best efforts to add gables. Just two planes intersecting in a single ridge. Way too much tree stuff falling down to encourage it to collect!
-jk
Just a interested DIY'er. Houses are a bit like cars in that there is a lot more technology going in to them these days than the average practitioner can fully understand. I'm interested in knowing what works and doesn't and will provide the most value. I'm thinking my next home may be a "custom" build.
So, that is my problem. Previous owners did homemade "gutter guards" of the worst kind for the tons of pine straw and leaves I get. Especially the pine straw. Leaf Guard just offers a flat surface for the debris to collect. Then you still have to sweep it off the guards, which defeats the purpose, especially on a two-story house. I am looking for a recommendation for a gutter guard where EVERYTHING rolls off while the water slips into the gutter. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
I chose to get rid of gutters for the most part, just put down lots of crushed stone where the water comes down so it doesn't splash on the house...have lots of snow and a standing seam metal roof complicates the issues.
Yeah, jk, a curse on gables, glad I have none, the simpler the better up there unless you live in California or something..
My dishwasher - ordered in August - is finally in an running! Hooray! And it's quiet.
Too quiet.
Well, not really too quiet - it's just pleasantly quiet, especially compared to the former dishwasher. And he only grumbled a little more then the appliance that died in August. ;)

Is leaf filter the mesh stuff? We have that on our farm house. It does fairly well, but there are no trees over the farm house. The folks using the hard ones have to get the gutters cleaned out every year or two, which is a pain as you have to lift them up to get the gunk out.
My house has a major canopy - you can't see my house from google satellite view. And they're mostly tulip poplars, which drop a variety of stuff from april through november. My ladder leans against my house most of the year. I climb up regularly with my battery leaf blower to clear the gutters.
-jk
Yes, Leaf Filter is the mesh. I tried to warn my brother before he got them, but he did not listen, and everything just piles on top and he has to clean them off. I have TONS of pinestraw. Then leaves. Not so much gunk as far as I know, except for pollen in the spring, and then it's a yellow nightmare.
normal high temp for us these days is around 50...yet it has been, and is going to be, sunny and 70 for the next several days...which prompted me to look up the traditional term "Indian Summer" to see if it is seen as offensive these days.
Most sources are equivocal on this...has been used for a long time in a non pejorative fashion, but I'm wondering what the new, safer term might be...in any event, it's glorious, we just don't tend to see this in November.
I always found the OBs to be way way too hot in the summer, and crowded of course. Fall treks, however, are just wonderful, and the house rental prices fall precipitously...
How much losing is a fan expected to take? Is it like gambling, you have to ride it out until the hot streak?
If you're talking about Duke football, we're old hands at losing. A few bright spots over the years but all in all pretty stinky.
Self-censoring mode on now.
I posted this in the Prez thread but it probably belongs here.
In "What the 2020!?!" news, I felt the earthquake that hit Massachusetts this morning. BINGO!
I told everybody we had a white Halloween - yes? It snowed the day before but remained cold enough that it didn't all melt by the time the trick-or-treaters came out. Still so happy that kids around here were able to take in candy. Social distancing was practiced by all!
No candy passing out here. We rarely got more than a dozen kids in good years.
I really enjoy the combination of Peanut Butter and Honey. Not so much Peanut Butter and Chocolate. But Chocolate and Mint may be one of the few combinations of foods I actively dislike.
Mint chocolate chip is my favorite ice cream.

I remember making these as a kid:

I hate chocolate ice cream, but I'll eat chocolate chip and mint chocolate chip.
I use blue mouthwash...
Coconut chocolate chip ice cream for me. I've only found it at Penn State so have settled for a scoop of Talenti's coconut with a scoop of their chocolate.
This Talenti's discussion sounds good, never had it. I assume it is also fat-free and low calorie?
It is very good. The only flavor I have not liked was their Cookie Dough. Just not the right texture. They have a dairy-free sorbetto (which I do not need, total happenstance that I bought it) flavored Cold Brew Coffee that is a creamy dream! I highly recommend Talenti, plus their containers are very useful for storing stuff.
And no, full of calories and fat, just like great ice cream should be!
Just like Ben and Jerry's, it comes in the handy single serving size. ;)
The only thing mint is good for is Juleps.
Walnuts or pecans?
Mmmkay, peanuts it is!
Today's Pop-Tart flavor: frosted cherry
38 degrees at dawn, ultra sunny and 70 now, this is the best weather ever.
Phooey...discovered evidence of termites in the barn wall. :(
New car!
Well, new to me.
