My son's game of choice was Civilization, so his side interest for the last 5-10 years has been more in the Seljuk/Mongolian/Ottoman region and time period. Arguably less useful to modern discourse than medieval Europe, but it's still pretty cool, and a topic about which I know next to nothing. To be fair, that last part may have been part of the excitement from his point of view.
An absolutely fantastic podcast series is Dan Carlin’s “Hardcore History.” He did several episodes — The Wrath of the Khans — about the Mongol Empire. Absolutely wonderful work, I’ve listened through the whole thing at least twice.
It’s not short. But the military history is extremely well-done.
(Hat tip as always to Nrrrrvous for turning me on to Carlin years ago).
What the diddly...?
Sigh, I muted myself.
Do you ever play curse word roulette with yourself on virtual work meetings? During some calls, I like to rapidly click the mute button on/off so I don't know what it lands on and then loudly say, "DUCK!". If I can get the, "what was that bundaberg, you're on mute", then I've won for the day. If I get silence and stares, then I have lost curse word roulette and I have to go visit Toby in HR again.
