The sporker must be broken because you very subtly said in the wager thread that no one was shutting down another posters policy ideas because they simply didn't have any policy ideas to shut down. You were very kind and how you said it but it was giggle inducing on my part. So there is a virtual spork from me floating in the ether.
I did wind up toasting my husband on his birthday with a wee glass of Laphroaig. I took one sip and confirmed what I already knew to be true - I hate scotch. I took a second sip - still hated it. I was about to pour the rest out but then thought better of it because that would be a completely unfair waste of good scotch, so I knocked it all back instead (one more large swallow). Hoo boy, not my drink. I had thought I could turn myself into a single malt lover through sheer force of will. Alas, no.
The next night I poured myself a wee glass of Devil's River. I have discovered that I prefer bourbon to scotch. I forgot to continue my tour of my husband's liquor last night, but tonight I plan to sample something called Bulleitt 95 Rye.
Then on Saturday, I intend to venture out to the liquor store to buy him a new bottle of some single malt that's not one of the peaty ones so we can sample it when he comes home either Saturday or Sunday or maybe Monday because of the weather.
I tried to become a connoisseur of bourbon and scotch and I figured something out. First, I really detest liquor. I don't like any type of liquor. Second, I figured out that I can't handle liquor. Perhaps this was the most important realization and it keeps me from breaking out in a bad case of the handcuffs when I drink. I stick with beer, I can handle the pacing. You should know who you are.
I know. That's why I'm going to get a different scotch this weekend so that the next time I decide to drink my husband's whisky, I have options that aren't Laphroaig. I might not like scotch, but I've sampled a lot of them through the years. I've always had at least one sip of the "birthday scotch". I haven't gotten him a bottle for his birthday every single year, but it's happened more often than not.
I am a huge fan of the Balvenie 12 year Double Wood. Six years in an oak cask, six years in a sherry cask. Smooth, complex, and a tinge of sweetness. And it is reasonably priced for a good single malt Scotch.
FWIW.
I have tried both Macallen and Balvenie. I know that I don't hate either of them as much as I hate Laphroaig. ;) For someone who hates scotch, I've sampled a lot of it.
You acknowledged and countered. It was a textbook rebuke of an idea, without devolution into an ad hominem attack. I had a Neonatologist at a prestigious institution tell me recently that he disagreed with my assertions, because they were not corroborated with enough data, but that his partners found me compelling and they were going to try my new theory out as a group. Translation: you may be right, but we don't know. But my coworkers liked you, so...
