Egg nog in my book.
Actually, hot apple cider for me.

OPK, what's the GA reaction to the brave being sent to the woodshed down there?
Kinda off the eggnog and pumpy spice these days. husband-of-weezie has had the boom lowered upon his intake of such delights so we're on the tree bark and pine needles diet. Ugh
Oh, "Ladybird" was very good but didn't measure up to "The Florida Project" which still resonates with me.
Why aren't there Egg Nog PopTarts!?!
I'm not going anywhere for Thanksgiving. But I'm having guests come in from Virginia, Florida and Raleigh.
I just had an outstanding egg sandwich for a second breakfast, and fired up the main board. It seems so much better this morning. Maybe it was the sandwich?
I just realized that the sandwich was not gluten free. I guess my gluten induced indigestion is easing.
I applaud the moderators’ decision. I’m Moving on.
Mmmmmmm. The house smells wonderful already. Damn I love Thanksgiving.
Had a pretty good interview this morning, expecting an offer next week.
Hi. 👋
Hey, happy Turkey Day Sue!
Just gor home from Thanksgiving dinner. It was good.
Some people can see into the future. Some can even hear into the future.
I can taste the future. And the future is tasty.
It's here! The single day when calories don't exist.
Happy Thanksgiving, you lunatics!
So, now the pressure/lunacy of Black Friday is well underway...starting back in September apparently. The husband-of-weezie, a guy who cares not a whit about clothing and style, appeared with his laptop asking for help in ordering some new Brooks Bros shirts since "it's such a deal!"
Tiresome.
The hardest part of Black Friday for me is that I start filling and shipping mashed potato orders. Have a room full of Idaho russets and Yukon golds to prepare (blend percentage a trade secret). Tip: I leave about 1/8 of the russet skins on, but strip the Yukon’s.
Oh, and the price of butter is up so no Black Friday discount sales this year. Plus, I can’t fill my orders as is without violating several child labor laws.
Man, my hackles rise when fat couch potatoes start their wailing and moaning about "stuff."
Took a walk in the woods, got back in time to watch the Duke game, gobbled (hah!) some supper at halftime. After the win, seven of us played this silly card game called "Hand and Foot", which is evidently a derivative of TEGWAR and takes about twice as long as a Monopoly or Risk. Then I had a piece of pie at 11:30 and read for a while.
Take that, Black Friday.
Last night was Opening Night of the show I'm in and I couldn't watch the game!! Sorry I missed it. Tomorrow night's tipoff is 10:30pm - correct? We have a matinee tomorrow so I can watch. Sounds like I might skip the chat though. (I never chat, I don't have a laptop and my computer isn't in the same room as my TV and no, I don't usually watch TV on my computer. Keeping it Old School!)
Ran another 5k today, checked off two towns! 33 down, 318 to go!
Slow action on the LTE this morning, must have been a late game last night or a collective holiday hangover this morning.
I may not be the best looking Duke fan this morning, but I'm the groggiest. Simply couldn't turn it off.
What did they say in the old days?
Must watch TV.
I am so tired today, but it's a good tired! What a great game last night against Florida!
(Perhaps this should be on the EK board?)
Job offer made.
Job offer to be accepted.
Congrats matty! Now that horrible boss will soon be in the rear view mirror.
1) Congrats!
2) I always found the Patick Davidson urban legend meme* a bit tiresome. It works much better with MB III. He is actually good at something.
*in retrospect, that is what we should call it isn't it? DBR was ahead of tne times.
Congrats Matty!
I don't know if we're cool enough to make MB III a meme, but I like the idea.
We only need 152 more!
We've lowered the average - we only need 7 posts a day now!
Hipster joke I told my twelve year old son:
“You know how the hipster burned the roof of his mouth? He ate a pizza before it was cool.”
His response:
“Did you hear about the hipster that built a time machine? He wanted to do things before it was cool to do things before they were cool.”
He’s as corny as his old man. Who gets it from a long lines of OlderPK’s.
This may be too off topic for this thread - but I was happy to hear that Coach Cutcliffe told Tennessee that he wasn't interested in their job.
With regrets, I'm not a huge fan of chain sandwich places. Never heard of Lenny's?
My life is crimped to the Nth degree on bread and I just love it so the idea of a big old sub makes me weep in self-denial.
I agree, this was a good topic reminder after our careening off the track with DinK's "out there, though important" post. We shall refrain from negative sporks in the spirit of 20K pursuit.
It's flounder and spinach for dinner tonight. Roasted brussels and potatoes and piety as sides.
My sister and I were channeling each other - again. PA sister and family will be here longer than usual at Christmas time. Usually, we do all meals at Sister Anne's house and I'll carry in BBQ for one of the meals. I was thinking about possible menus to do a couple of meals this time and then got a text from her asking if I would do a few meals. I did not tell her to get out of my head - although I have done that on past channeling occurrences.
Our relatively recent Christmas dinner tradition is a roast, usually rump, and Yorkshire pudding. Turns out, I make a good Yorkshire pudding. Didn't know I could until I saw a recipe and thought, "That doesn't look hard!" I've done it for the past 3 years and don't intend to change now. Best thing? None of my boys complain about roast and Yorkshire pudding. (I have a couple that do complain about turkey.) This might be my last Christmas at home for awhile though - the parents are getting a bit old to travel, probably time to start going to them. Same with the in-laws. We're done with Santa, so, traveling might not be so hard.
Last year, we changed up our Christmas meal as we were bummed about a late change in plans with PA family staying home. Wonder if we will do that meal again - standing rib roast with potatoes cooked around it and cake instead if pies.
What is Yorkshire pudding? Recipe?
A very thin batter: lots of eggs and maybe some milk, little bit of flour, salt, pepper, maybe some thyme, a touch of melted butter. Whip that up and pour it into fat left in roasting pan after cooking a haunch of meat. Puffs up and away you go.
Something I haven't had in hundreds of years. I love food.
Oh, I agree, it's wonderful but it isn't allowed in the prison of my diet sensibilities.
That's about where it stands.
I am utterly exhausted. Whew, another fierce game.
A cat has adopted our back yard.
The 'Hotel California' discussion upthread got me thinking.
Next summer, my wife and I are planning a major cross-country road trip to see a bunch of America's iconic National Parks and also to cross off a bunch of states. We'll be heading up through the midwest to Glacier NP, then down to the Grand Canyon, then home. We're starting our brainstorm for a state-related playlist, and need suggestions for any and all of the following states:
- Kansas
- Nebraska
- Iowa
- Michigan
- Wisconsin
- Minnesota
- North Dakota
- South Dakota
- Wyoming
- Montana
- Idaho
- Utah
- Arizona
- New Mexico
- Texas
- Oklahoma
- Arkansas
Go.
New Mexico, Montana and Wyoming may be the coolest places I have been in the continental 48. Will add more later.
I know there is a thread on NM on the off-topic board when I asked for advice years ago (probably search “Albuquerque”)
Yellowstone will change your world.
I’ve got one state left to go, Alaska.
Kansas - Dust in the Wind or Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas, anything by Toto :-)
If you are coming through the KC metro area, let me know and I'll treat you to a meal. Please don't judge our state just on the view from I-70. It is a beautiful state - not Rocky Mountain splendor but still beautiful.
Minnesota - anything by Prince!
Michigan - Detroit Rock City, Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Pretty Girl from Michigan (Avett Brothers), Especially in Michigan (Red Hot Chili Peppers), and, of course the Motown Canon.
I'll keep thinking but that'w what I got for now.
Iowa - Soundtrack to The Music Man
Who's got their tree?!
I do.
Our is up thanks to Mrs.PK
Had my exit interview. It was hard, but took the high road with it.
Kudos to you, both for your new job and your ability to remain even-tempered.
Exit interviews are funny...in my only exit interview since beginning my career in earnest, I was leaving for a 50% raise, a ~70% reduction in my daily commute time, and a vastly better institutional fit, and they still couldn’t figure out why anyone would ever want to leave. I was truthful, but nice and genuinely appreciative of the opportunity they had given me, and eventually, when pressed for ever more explanations as to my departure, I was just kind of like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
In my previous exit interview, when informing the [redacted] [redacteds] at [redacted] University that I was prioritizing my long-term mental and emotional well-being and leaving their [redacted] PhD program, I, um, did not quite take the high road. But it sure felt good to tell those [redacted] [redacteds] to stick their [redacted] [redacted] [redacteds] right up their [redacted] [redacteds]. I think that, almost 7 years later, the flames on that bridge have just about petered out.
I'm assuming you mean Alaska is the one state you haven't visited. My last state is ND (I was running late getting to Seattle for a 2 week sailboat trip, and couldn't really afford the side trip; I've regretted sleeping instead ever since.) My standard is both driving enough to need gas and eating a meal in a state - nicking a corner doesn't count. I don't know how I'll work ND in without making it a specific destination...
And, of course, anyone doing a lot of driving should also get to BBQ joints and tacky tourist sites as well. Great big balls of twine! Mini Graceland! Corn Palace! America at its, um, somethingest...
-jk
I have added to the ball of twine - more than once.
Stopped at the Spam Museum this summer.
We are gaining a family member. Nephew Sam popped the question and she said yes.
That's wonderful news DinK! So, are you volunteering any Spam treats for the reception?!
Oh, and holy moly with the stock market!

Beware of your NC City Council!
I guess this is as good a place as any for my 1st Post. I wanted to get it out of the way so the first time I do say something I don't get "Great First Post  Go Away Troll"
Anyway... we just made our first trip to Duke's Campus and WOW. Come on Admissions Office, don't fail me now. Well, my kid that is.
Fingers crossed for you.
Hope this isn't the last post. What does your kid want to study? I've got two applying this year, one as a freshman (wants to study Classics) and one as a transfer (wants to study Economics). Both are long shots, although the kid who wants to study Classics has a very strong resume in that area - he's already taken Classical Greek as an independent study at Harvard plus 7 years of Latin.
I will post my Yorkshire pudding recipe eventually. Still in a show. We close tomorrow night. I'll dig out that once a year recipe sometime next week.
And we're under 100 to go. I say we got this! (But don't quit now. ;) )
My bro is in Tanzania for work. He was enjoying a cold barley soda when he spotted a local resident wearing a Duke hat. Bro is a spartan/msu. He engaged the Tanzanian man in a conversation during which the fine man extolled Duke as the "Finest program in any sport, ever." Bro mentioned michigan state and the Tanzanian fellow roared laughing and declared, "This conversation is OVER!"
I wish bro would bring that guy home for a visit...
I'm more draconian than you - I don't count a state unless I've stayed over night in said state. Although, to be fair, now that I've stayed over night in Colorado instead of just passing through the Denver airport, I don't have any that I've merely passed through. I've got a bunch left to do.
Alaska, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Arizona, New Mexico, Minnesota, and Utah.
Hmmm, wonder if I'll finish the Massachusetts 5k Challenge first? 12 states versus 318 towns. I'm getting #34 Medfield on Sunday! Should I run in Norwood or Westwood on New Year's Day?
I feel like I had another comment I was going to respond to, but I can't figure out what it was. It's not on the last page. I'm too lazy to go further back right now.
This is how my wife and I roll. Generally, for us, a state visit requires at least one meal, some significant local experience, and an overnight. We’re in the mid 30s right now, but next summer’s trip will get us into the mid 40s. The goal is to finish all 50 by my 40th birthday (August 2022).
I will have your scarf done by then too. When I finally finish it, it will be one of a kind. (I have started it and changed my mind and started over more times than I can count. I'm hoping 2018 will be the year. The kid going back on chemo never helps either, but, we are done with that!)
I have been to MA for 1/2 of a football game but no overnight stay. I was surprised at the number of states on my list of spending at least one night, and most were more than one night. I still need to go to AZ, CT, DE, MA, ME, MS, MT, NH, OR, UT, VA, VT, WA, & WV. It is possible tbat we stayed in VA when we visited DC on the way to Duke my sophomore year but I'm not sure.
I can add 9 foreign countries. If the overnight stay requirement is removed, I can add an unexpected landing in Pakistan and a scheduled refueling in Iran.
I'm going on a Christmas house tour today. I'm hoping to gather some inspiration for my own Christmas decorations. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Only to note that one of my co-worker's fiance has put up 5 trees in the house, one general Christmas one and four specially themed ones. For the son in the family he asked for a Nightmare before Christmas themed tree. She hand painted ornaments for it.
Me on the other hand, I'll have a single tree about two feet high. The cats will knock some of the ornaments off.
We've done two trees in my house for years - the big one and a "kids' tree", usually about 3 feet. We try to come up with a theme for the kids' tree but it's often no more complicated than only red and white ornaments. One time we did only candy themed ornaments. I do not hand paint any ornaments for the kids tree. The kids tree tradition will probably continue even though the youngest kid is now 13.
When I was about 7 or 8 years old my mom got a set of nesting boxes for each of us kids and on Christmas morning there was a present from Santa in each box. My youngest sister is now 28 and married, her husband now has a set of boxes at the parents' house. They'll be filled again in a few weeks, mom will still insist the presents came from Santa, and we'll all play along. Keep the kids tree going, traditions are fun!
As long as my parents were alive, I believed in Santa - I got an extra present that way. ;)
I put up two trees - one upstairs with a variety of ornaments although a number are Nativities and one downstairs that is Peanut themed. I had to grow that tree from a 3ft to a 6ft as the number of Peanuts characters multiplied.
I also put out multiple Nativity scenes. I had to set a requirement - I no longer buy a Nativity scene if I already have one from that country. I kept liking the ones from Peru. It keeps the spending at Ten Thousand Villages down.
As I was decorating our table top tree earlier today, the Cornhole Championship was on espn. What's up with that?
The Championship Of The Entire Universe, which includes bragging/braying rights and automatic beer delivery service provided by the losers, is permanently based at our beach house. What the heck is espn trying to pull here?!!!
Somebody - and I'm not going to say who - told me I was their hero today. So. I got that going for me! ;-)
Just in case they read this - and I'm not saying they will - thank you.
Did you ever know that you were their hero BD?
I always thought cornhole was a Midwestern thing, not a beach thing.
Only been to 23 (I think) states so far. 10 countries. My method the last few years has been to 2 big international trips for everyone 1 domestic.
Been fighting some sort of cold for the last week. The worst of it is over, but it's still hanging around
I saw the inside of this today.
Attachment 7885
And, yes, I sang the song in my head.
It's such a great song! We sometimes use it as our Cornhole team song.
In other news, I meticulously cleaned the fridge today.
My husband thinks I need an intervention for the cleaning thing.
You world travelers are pretty lame. I’ve been kicked out of more places than most of y’all have even been.
So, in the same vein as The Gift Of the Magi, I'm giving husband-of-weezie a whole house humidifier attached to the furnace and I hope he's giving me a new thermostat for Christmas.
It's pretty romantic, I'll admit. Instead of selling my hair, don't you think?
Makes me teary-eyed BD...
Very good news from the neurosurgeon today at my wife's appointment. Should crosspost to Mmmm Beer!
For an out of towner --- if I send my kid down there for school ... are there any cell providers that just plain stink down in Durham? I'm pretty sure he will be in Wi-Fi on campus about 99% of the time. Just asking just in case.
That's great MtDev! Here's to Mrs. MtDev and to you!
hmm - my wife's hair is about two feet shorter than when I met her 40-some years ago (then down to her waist) - so I am not sure that is a big sacrifice :)
But I approve of a warm and non-over-dry house.
Do you have a working fireplace - which can affect all of that?
Hmmm, well I would say up early but I hope to grab a few more hours of sleep tonight. You?
Spent the day in misery with a sore shoulder. Think it's the classic ladies reaching into back seat for purse move. Waaaaaaah, sniff.
Glad to hear the good news, Mountain Devil!
I'll be working a bit closer to your side of town starting next week. Lets get together soon for some ymm, beer to celebrate your good news and my new job! We can drag Ricks68 along, too.
We got snow this evening in South Central Texas. I was not pleased.
Snowing in Asheville as of the last ten minutes. First of the year.
Got flurries in Indianapolis yesterday.
Kinda warm in Boston, high of 40. No snow in sight.
Snowing in Atlanta right now. Snowpocalypse hopefully not imminent.
Secondary roads in Asheville getting legitimately sketchy. Looks like a lot more snow coming down.
It does feel weird to be sitting up here in Boston with no snow when Atlanta has some. Really weird.
According to the forecast - we're getting snow tomorrow. But only 3-6 inches. So, not too bad.
Coworkers flight routing through Atlanta this evening has been cancelled. Is there a worse city at handling snow than Atlanta?
We're not good at it. But I'm looking out the window right now at conditions that appear considerably worse than anything anyone predicted. And we're in the midst of another widespread early dismissal of students, workers, etc. all across the metro area.
Let's just say I'm glad that my commute has gone from 17 miles across 4 counties during Snowjam 2014 (a 7-hour trip for me that day, and I was one of the lucky ones), to 4 miles right up the road now. I'll walk home today if I have to.
Easily five inches here already. Went home early, promptly slipped sideways into the ditch in front of my house, even in 4WD. Sheesh.
Getting bad here. The weather’s not actually thaaaat bad at this point; has downshifted to a wintry mix. The gridlock, on the other hand...Prepare to hear shades of 2014 Snowpocalypse all over again.
What will happen when the page count of this thread rolls over to 1000?
I suggest a few minutes of running around in circles and then back to observing the oddities of personal circumstances.
We could also make a pact to toast each other that day or the next at 5:00pm with a beverage of choice. Or 11:00am, whatever floats your boat.
How do we make sure that bd gets the post to put us over the top?
Just watched Emmit Otter's Jug Band Christmas and cried a bit.
Unlike all the rest of the posts here which have never been nonsense.
Never, ever, ever.
We're at 1000 pages right now where I'm sitting.
Time to party!!
Hey - maybe I can just get us to 20,000 right now.
