I think I'll hang out over here.
Lots of room over here and absent most of the negativity.
Hopefully this Kansas game will be more entertaining.
The Laettner commercial was on again . . . makes me smile every time :) Oh how I wish I would have been old enough to remember seeing that when it actually happened.
Top of the morning my fellow PW's! I have a tradition of focusing on summer as soon as Duke's basketball season is over. Stevo and I have some fun plans for this summer. We're cleaning out the garage this weekend so that we can make a dedicated beer brewing area. I also decided that since our parties are typically held outside, we "need" a refrigerator in the garage for said parties and for our "Two Blue Tiki Brew!"
Yay for summer at the beach and beer!! :):):):)
I wasn't believing the forecast for 4-8 inches and it looks like I was right. They have been downgrading the storm all morning. Grrrrr! I wanted 8 + inches. I did stop at the store on the way home last night to get stuff for lunch at work today but I already had milk - and plenty of wine to get me through any storm.
Congrats on the loan approval. I know the process wasn't as smooth as you had hoped.
Good morning.
I'm trying to decide what to do today. Go to skating (World Championships, Ladies Final, not cheap) and lunch or go shopping @ Nordstrom or clean and fart around.
Ponder this statement, which I recieved after posting too quickly.
"This forum requires that you wait 60 seconds between posts. Please try again in 30 seconds."
I'm not a mathematical genius, but I know 30 is less than 60.
[quote=DukieInKansas;279652 I wanted 8 + inches. [/quote]
To much information! :eek::eek::D
Am watching World Figure Skating Championships right now. Wonder if Sue is there?
Rachael Flatt is up next. Go, Rachael!
Rachael got 'er done! Woo hoo! My prediction after Nationals came true! (Recap: I predicted that she'd come in ahead of Alissa Czisny.)
I had to work all day and laundry needs to be done. I'll probably work some tomorrow, too. Hopefully laundry can be done tomorrow night.
While at work, I got to watch it snow all afternoon. Came home and couldn't get enough traction to get into my driveway. Neighbor came over and helped me shovel the 8 inches of heavy wet snow. I'm glad I have a short driveway!
Amazing is right! Yu-Na Kim is phenomenal. She's got artistry to go along with some amazing jumps. I think she's better than her rivals Asada and Ando in that respect. Rochette, on the other hand, is not far behind technically and is very good artistically. Next year's Olympics should be an interesting battle. Flatt ended up in 5th place overall, which isn't too shabby for her first senior worlds. Hopefully she'll pick up the technical mark next year and can challenge them.
Both are understandable. That's one I would've loved to see live, though. It would be interesting to see whose performances look as good live as they do on TV. Seems like some aspects of performance just don't translate to TV very well. I've heard that a skater's speed is really distorted on TV and that some of them skate at an absolute crawl if you're watching live.
Hoping for some Oklahoma madness today...
Clean clothes are overrated too
Make that three!
I will say, though, that if unc makes it past OK, I'd rather see them win it all than the UConnVicts. That may be blasphemy, but that's the way it is. Say what you will about Old Roy, but he runs a cleaner program that Calhoun does. Don't get me wrong - I'm still all for ABC. If the final comes down to unc and UConn, I'll be pulling for unc. YMMV
As much as I despise what calhoun represents, there is no way I could pull for unc even against uconn. If unc wins it all, I will have to put up with their insufferable fans for a year. I am so sick of their insufferable fans.
In the meantime: BOOMER SOONER!!!!
Whoever I root for seems to tank (with 1 exception), so I think I'll root for UCon & UNC. ;)
I didn't clarify. That dwanx1 thing is me, Sue.
Duh.......
Yes, rooting for their demise doesn't seem appropriate either. Or does it?
:D
A long time ago, pre-marriage, I had a roommate who was a graduate of Michigan State. We reached an agreement in the house, she would root for Duke Basketball, I would root for Michigan State Football. I bought her a Duke sweatshirt, she bought me a Michigan State sweatshirt, and that was that. It's a no brainer for me who I'm rooting for, even though technically it's not the right sport, all other things being equal, I always root for Michigan State. (We did have the rule that when they played each other, we could revert to our natural tendencies.) GO SPARTANS!!!!!!!
(She still pulls for Duke too.)
The poor LTE is so neglected these days. What gives, people?
Don't worry, LTE, I still love you.
Ah, what to do for dinner. Hmmm.
A Michigan State - Villanova matchup ensures me a tidy sum in one of my pools...
Carl Edwards, ugghhh.
I think I'm going to have some ice cream. Because my behind isn't fat enough. :)
I <3 ice cream.
Watching DWTS now. I like this week's dances: Argentine Tango & Lindy Hop.
But the 60 second rule is killing me. Can we go back to 30 sec? Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease?
It just makes PWing soooooooo hard. :(
I have to go get something off my printer.
But that means I have to get up off the couch (as opposed to Coach, right Oz? ;) )
Sigh.
Guess I'll go to the printer now.
Went to the printer. Did some other stuff. Came back. Sat here and sorted through stuff. Got back online.
Did y'all miss me?
Is anyone out there?
If a tree falls in a forest, and no one is around...
Um, wow. Giles. Wowwwwwwwwww.
My, oh my. Giles.
THAT was insane. Holy smokes. Speaking of which, I don't smoke but I need a cigarette right now.
Did ANYONE here see that tonight? DWTS? Giles? Uhhhhhhh... (mopping sweat from brow...)
Wow I think I'm going to have a whole page to myself.
I wonder how many more posts until the page turns.
I just saw a commercial for the new ABC show Cupid.
I wonder when Cupid's going to visit me.
I could use his help. Nothing else seems to be working. ;)
Am I still really on the same dang page?
Oh, enough already. Turn the page.
I'm bored and not sleepy.
I'm a Pepper.
He's a Pepper.
She's a Pepper.
We're a Pepper.
Wouldn't you like to be a Pepper too?
Ho hum.
Yay, The Godfather is on.
Thanks goodness for AMC.
I also just downloaded it in iTunes.
It's my favorite movie ever.
It was also the first novel I ever read.
I think I was 8 years old at the time.
It was on a shelf in my Grandparents' house.
So I took it.
I think it took me about 2 weeks to finish.
Remember, I was 8.
It's April 1st in 1 day, 1 hour, and 41 minutes.
Is anyone here planning any April Fools pranks?
I wonder what DBR will do this year.
I'm being quite unproductive tonight.
Well, except for my PWing duties.
Well, my self-appointed PWing duties, anyway.
I had a good hair day today.
And at 20 posts/page, it's now turned. G'nite. :)
There's somebody out there older than me! Bless his heart!!!!! and Happy Birthday!
Love, Ima ( AKA The Illinois Sweet Corn Sweetheart of 1958)
First off, good job, Sue! I'd say your evening was quite productive in that you almost singlehandedly got us to 12,000 again. Nice work! :D:D
Secondly, happy birthday, Pappa Ozzie. Wow, just, wow! :D
Who is going to post the 12,000th post in this thread? Ymo what does Vegas have to say about this?
WOW! Just wow.
Sue, I am in awe of your PWing talents.
And Papa Ozzie--such a milestone to reach 95 years. Happy Birthday!
Can't stop watching DWTS...even though I think they are going pretty far afield by calling gymnasts and ice skaters and former ballet dancers "amateurs". Must admit, though, that the show was getting pretty tiresome when it was filled with real novices and football players lumbering around. Last night's tango numbers were really, really nice.
How long before DD gets the gig? I'm sure he's got a pro status by now. I want to be his partner!:)
Love, Ima
I just got a nice note and some signed Duke Blue paper from Tommy Amaker!! (Doing a little dance.) Making lemonade people, making lemonade.
They allow smoking on broadcast television?
Poor Vince, how the mighty have fallen...
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive...7092sham1.html
YmoBeThere - make me stop. Why did I let you lure me into the PPB discussion? I don't belong over there.
DWTS is much more my speed.
As we learn to dance, we are expected to be able to dance with different partners, both as the male/leader and the female/follower. Joy loves dancing with the male instructors as they are so skilled and (almost) always make their female students look/feel better. The female instructors are very kind and patient with their male students as we definitely do NOT make them look/feel better:o.
First, I got the envelope back from Tommy with the signature. Then I heard that my play 'Almost Made in Heaven' will definitely be in that festival in Charlotte. Performances are June 3-6. I'm going to fly down, probably to Durhan then drive over to Charlotte with my brother either Friday or Saturday night, maybe both! I'll have to get together with Durham DBR folks while I'm there too!
I think this news needs it's own 'Theater Opportunities' thread though.
Congrats, BD!
Congrats BD!!
Any hope that your play will be in the Lexington, KY theater anytime soon? I don't know if you've heard, but UK has a new basketball coach.
Cheers,

I have never visited the Duke Lemur Center and have a question. Do the lemurs roam the Duke forest at will or do they have an enclosed habitat? I know there is a primate building but I couldn't tell from the DLC website how things are laid out - all enclosed habitats, large open area, or what. I assume they have some kind of enclosed habitat but don't know enough about the climate differences between NC and their native habitat to know for sure. (I am asking this as a serious question - I'm not trying to fan any flames from the front page "story".) Next time I'm in Durham, I need to try to schedule a tour.
Some lemurs are housed strictly indoors. For example, some of the small, strictly nocturnal species would be impossible to deal with outdoors.
Other species are housed in enclosures that are part of the main building of the DLC. These runs used to be technically outdoors, but individuals can be moved indoors.
Other species are housed in these enclosures during part of the year, and then live in the forested enclosures. Over the years, these enclosures have been encircled by fences, and have some electricity protecting them, keeping the lemurs in, if they get too close. The size of these enclosures varies, but they essentially have enclosures that have been fairly large (several acres). In one of the enclosures, there's a classroom. I'd call it the best classroom at Duke.
NOTE: There was an earlier mention of "free range" lemurs. Technically, any time they are free to roam and establish a home range (the area that they use throughout the course of a year), they are said to be "free-ranging." This is obviously the case in nature. At Duke, because they are not quite in that sort of situation, I have seen papers in which these primates are said to be "semi-free-ranging."
Temperatures in North Carolina can be much cooler than in Madagascar, but likewise can get warmer than in Madagascar. There used to be heat lamps in covered shelters for the lemurs; it's been a few years since I've studied there, but I would imagine the heat lamps are still around.
If I were setting up a tour, I'd try to go during the mid-late Spring, Summer, and early Fall, when lemurs are in the natural habitat enclosures. Early summer means that if there are kids, they should be old enough to start taking their first steps. ALWAYS cool! Check to make sure that the lemurs are in the natural habitat enclosures.
The DLC is unlike any other primate center I have experienced, and I'd probably not have become a primatologist had I gone anywhere else for my bachelor's.
The facility has an important role in research, conservation, education at Duke, and in public education (as per alteran's earlier post). It is not a zoo. It does a lot of things. So try to schedule well in advance. There's also a good place to buy all sorts of lemur things (my favorite being the bobbleheaded lemur).
Of course, if you have a few thousand dollars, I know a few sites in Madagascar that are priceless!;)
Cheers,
Lavabe
Thank you, Lavabe. I'm sorry I never got by there eons ago while a student. Poor planning on my part. I should have found a way to take a class that would have involved the lemurs in some way. My favorite classes were those outside my major. I will definitely try to schedule a tour if I get back to Durham - not a frequent occurance in my life.
I figured there must be some way of containing the lemurs to a set area to protect them from outside influences/predators. Just the thought of a bobbleheaded lemur makes me smile so I can see why it would be a favorite.
Going to Madagascar would be a blast. Maybe I can go as your assistant the next time you schedule a trip. I hope your travel this summer won't be impacted by the current political situation.
One more note: things really do change every year, so some of those descriptions I have given for the DLC may have been changed slightly since the last time I stopped by (just before the changeover to the current director).
Travel to Madagascar is definitely being impacted, but I am still going to try and do it. A more serious conservation issue surfaced just the other day:

However, my local contacts assure me that I will be okay where I am going.
Cheers,
Lavabe
The Lemur Center offers tours during reunion weekends. I'm signed up for the Friday at 1:00 p.m. tour on April 17. I hope the lemurs won't be taking their afternoon naps then. I'm looking forward to seeing them then and learning more about them. I hope to have pictures to share.
Hmmm...lemurs...
I'm not sure who was in my class - but now I think I have as many posts at the year CathyCA and BostonDevil graduated.
eta - oops I can't count. I think 1985 is the year after they graduated. I wonder where I posted 1984. Is that a sign of being a PW - not remembering where you put your last post?
CathyCa is '84, I'm '85.
Ugh, what a crappy month! I'm looking forward to Spring, looking forward to moving back to North Carolina, and I'm looking forward to better times. Here's to brighter days folks. I hope the sun shines on you all.
9F-ily,
2535Miles
I've been up since 2:30 AM. Boy, this is fun. Not. :(
Edit: I was born in 1971. (Do the math.) This is post #1971, at least until mods do some more clean up.
I'm still awake.
I took a tour of the Lemur Center this past December. During the colder months a tent is put around the enclosures and heat lamps are turned on in each enclosure to keep the lemurs warm. The ring tail lemurs were huddled together on top of the box containing the heat lamp in their enclosure.
In addition to the tours around the enclosures, the Lemur Center offers tours in the "semi-free range" areas. Children have to be at least 11 to participate in those tours. This tour is a little pricey, $100/tour, but up to 4 people can participate on the tour. So, if a few other people want to set up one of those tours with Knights68 and me, let us know.
I'm certain that it covers more than my nametag, but I had to pay a $25 registration fee (per person) in addition to the various fees for the Friday night party ($46 per person), the Saturday luncheon ($17 per person), the Saturday evening gala ($75 per person), and the champagne brunch in the gardens ($18 per person). The Lemur Center tour is only $6 per person.
But wait a second--I get to see Robert Redford for free! THAT, my friends, is priceless!
I really really really really really hope I can sleep tonight.
Yes, I did. Thank you.
I think the, oh, grand total of 4 hours the night before plus forcing myself to stay up until 11:30 to ensure sheer exhaustion helped.
Edit: 1986 ACC Champs!
Nope, alas, the young Turks have some events that I could neither reschedule nor delegate. I will be with y'all in spirit, and I am definitely overdue for a Durham trip.
P.S. It is a bit disconcerting to hear of the nickel-and-diming re some of the events that you mentioned. "Reminder: 25th Reunion! Bring Checkbooks!!"
Yes, I presume your landlord is charging you a number greater than zero... I like to think of myself as a much more benevolent sort, so doubling of OTB rent should pose "zero" financial hardship...
As for buying, it is your patriotic duty!! Your country needs you in its time of crisis...
Yeah, I'm disappointed too... The Brunchgates sound like a lot of fun - let's see how the calendar behaves in the fall...
P.S. You are also "The Chief" at 874. Since you are now in charge, I'll leave you to decide how much to increase OTB rent. YMO seemed pretty upset when I suggested doubling it...
