Red Queen Hypothesis - please explain for those of us in the dark. :o
Hope your laundry is done by now, Sue71. (Just trying to stay ahead of you in the post count. :D)
DBR Red Queen Hypothesis: You have to keep evolving just to stay at the same post count (borrowed from an actual biological hypothesis, which was borrowed loosely from Alice in Wonderland).

I've been baited by the yogurt . . . :D
Recently I'm drinking or eating Kefir. That stuff is supposed to have better bacteria than yogurt.
It's not too good on it's own, but tolerable in various concoctions. The best combo I've had so far is Kefir, Pecans, Oat Cereal, Craisins.
I have a very important question for my friends on the LTE. I purchased a 2009 ACC Championship t-shirt, and it arrived today. Now for the deep philosophical question: should I wear this shirt tomorrow? The mojo of this shirt has not been tested, and I would hate for Duke to be upset by Binghamton because I was so bold as to wear a new shirt on game day. What should I do?
The awesomeness of the team will supersede any mojo that we fans can bring...
Hey, all! I just created a group in the ESPN Tournament Challenge. The group name is "DBR LTE", and the password is "pastrami". Somehow I suspect who we'll all choose to win the tourney... :D:cool:
I can't do it! If I fill out a bracket with Duke winning it all, it's kind of giving a half hearted attempt. If I fill out a bracket and pick someone to beat Duke, I would feel like I was cheating on Blue Devil. I do not want to feel the wrath of Blue Devil.
Sigh! I<3 Blue Devil.
Off to Vegas in a few hours. Have fun y'all!
1. I do not fill out brackets anymore. The last one I filled out was in 1999. 'Nuff said.
2. I'm in my hotel room in Minny. It's not all that cold (said in the hopes that it doesn't get colder as the week progresses). Did I just jinx that?
3. Sigh.
4. Sigh again.
5. I hope this isn't a short trip, a la last year.
Oh, I almost forgot.
6. I hate domes.
Basketball was not meant to be played in a Dome. Parking around that one is atrocious. Benefit of a rental car - you don't mind going down a small grass hill and a curb to avoid traffic. :D
I hope you are there for the full weekend. Have a good time - if you need Minny/St. P info, I've got a nephew up there.
I was in that Dome for a football game (battle for the Little Brown Jug). It was way colder inside than I was expecting.
Argh.
I'm trying to fill in my brackets tonight, and I'm just not satisfied. I might get booed off the board, but I have Duke making it to the final game, and that just doesn't feel right. But, I don't see them losing to Texas, and then from there... well, darn it, I'm just too much of a fan to think DeJuan Blair can get the best of us two years in a row.
I also have Gonzaga beating UNC because, well, it's UNC.
I guess either I look like a basketball genius, or an utter fool. I normally wouldn't care, but my office pool (bragging rights only) is being run by an anti-Duke Michigan fan. And about 50% of my colleagues don't know anything about American college basketball, so it'd be really embarrassing to not be in at least the top 25% of the group.
Harumph. Why does it seem harder this year than years past?
I had trouble with my bracket as well. One of them has the UConnVicts in the Final Four. AARGH! I do have 2 brackets choosing Duke to win. :D
Hopefully more of you will join CathyCA, DA, and I in the tourney challenge.
I had computer challenges last night. I hope I'm in but will try to check this am. Will also need to buy a new computer as mine will no longer boot up at home. It tells me it is missing a Windows file and, of course, I have no idea how to get the file and put it back on since computers don't like to include program files anymore. Can I use my XP upgrade disk to find the file to put on a computer that I didn't use this upgrade on? (Bad grammar, I know but sometimes sentences feel awkward when you reword them to avoid ending in a preposition.)
And wasn't that a great rambling post above. I need more sleep and less frustration. A Duke win will help. And a new computer today so I can watch the game at home tonight.
I went with the EK Forum yahoo tournament challenge (it was posted before this one). I can barely keep track of one bracket, so I have abstained from the LTE group bracket on ESPN.
In any case, I have Duke 72 - Louisville 69 in the final game, thereby avenging the 1986 debacle by the same score (good guys win this time). Back then, it was Never Nervous Pervis. This year it will be, quoting the name of another DBR poster, the Brian Zoubek Experience!!:)
In G we trust!!:D
Cheers,
Lavabe
I'm wearing my new 2009 ACC Champions t-shirt and my 9F button. I'm ready for the game, but can't watch it - I'm off to choir practice. LGD! Shin Kickers, unite!
I'm a citizen of Zoubekistan.
I've already done brackets for 4 different pools. I can't face anymore. But good luck to all who entered here. I didn't really have it in me this year so lord knows who I picked although in one I have Oklahoma winning it all. I emailed the picks to the guy who runs the pool and told him I don't know how I got to a place where I picked Oklahoma to win it all but, you know, that's as good a pick as any. (I don't always pick Duke to win but I never pick that other school, you know the one, never pick them. Unlike the president.)
If Duke doesn't win, I hope Oklahoma does. That's saying a lot, since AR fans tend to not like OK too much. Capel is a great coach.
In our little mini-pool, DA is ahead after the first round. Of course, a lot can change today, but she's got a very healthy lead so far.
Gee, 7 "last posts" in a row on a Friday morning. Glad someone isn't working too hard
I was going to post a "picture" of them, but the error message popped up telling me I had 30 images in the post and that is not allowed. Dumb software :D
People complain about the oddest things. Yesterday, I received a complaint that the phone at my desk is too loud. This came from someone who has a door to their office, and sound proofing around this door. I wanted to tell them to close their dayum door.
Today, I answered the phone at my desk, only to be greeted with something to the effect of being too perky. Wow! I'm too perky. Umm, would you rather I was crabby?
People need to get over some of the issues they are having.
I just spoke with Sue71, who is with her USC Trojans in Minneapolis. She of course is thrilled they beat BC tonight (not good for the ACC) and they get to stay the weekend, rather than fly back tonight to LA. She wanted me to tell y'all to root for USC on Sunday and she says "Hi!" to everyone.
Keep being perky, Tilly! Most people really do appreciate that. Ignore the cranky people.
I had to deal with that type of stuff more at the last job than I do now. Add this item to the long list of reasons why I don't miss the last job. I'm nearing the 1-year anniversary of my last day at the JFH (Job from unc) and am thinking of having a party to mark the occasion. :D
DevilAlumna is in the lead; one of my 2 brackets is in 2nd place. The FSU loss really hurt - I picked them to go a bit farther because of how well they played in the tourney. I picked the Wake Forest upset, though, since they were stinking things up a bit at the end of the season. It will be interesting to see how the weekend's remaining games shake out.
And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming ... Ozzie, why didn't I get any pastrami? St. Louis isn't that far away! :D
Hi all.
This is a MAJOR landmark in St. Louis.
And in your spare time, you can make the short jaunt to the O'Fallon Brew Company for the Wheach (Peach Wheat).
But remember Arkie, St. Louis is the HOME of Bud Light!:D
ETA: Oh yeah, and St.Louis is home to this year's DivIII NCAA Men's Basketball Champions, WashU.
O'Fallon Wheach was available this time last year. See:
http://www.ofallonbrewery.com/products/index.html
Check out the stores over the next few weeks. If it's available, I might have to do a StLouis beer run soon.
Cheers,
Lavabe
An over 12 hour hiatus...everyone must be figuring out how they are getting into Thursday nights game.
Slackards all:o:eek:.
I have been busy figuring out how much getting into Thursday's game is worth to me...
I'm home. :(
Here's a dilemma, through a very wonderful friend, my husband and I now have tickets to Thursday's game. I know, what's the dilemma? Well, Duke-Villanova is the late game and it's a school night. We're talking getting home at 1am. There is no way I can get a babysitter and I'm loathe to leave my 15 year-old in charge when we're out that late because he's not real good at getting his brothers to go to bed. I could see getting home to a microwave popcorn movie fest as they all sit up watching the complete Star Wars saga. Solution? I think I may let hubby and the 15 year-old go and I'll stay home. I know, best mom ever, right?
In hubby's defense, when we scored some last minute Celtics tickets a couple of weeks ago, he stayed home and I took the 15 year-old (we can call him Andrew). So, Andrew makes out most of the time. I have been to NCAA tourney games before and even a Final Four (1986) so . . .
Best ever tourney game for me, 1989, Meadowlands, Phil Henderson dunking on Mourning, I saw it live.
One of my friends at work (a Tarheel no less!) has a friend who is looking to make some money who might be willing to babysit, so, there may be a babysitting option afterall.
I'd have to weigh out the pros and cons here. What is the real, long-term damage that comes from microwave popcorn movie fest? Is it going to affect the kids SAT scores? Will they end up at Kerlina instead of Duke? :D Probably not.
I say you and Mr. Bostondevil go to the game and have a blast! Give the fifteen year old a chance to shine. I remember my parents doing the same, and my brother and I really appreciated the trust and confidence they showed us. This is, assuming of course, you do trust that he won't burn the house down or throw a raging house party. So if the kids stay up late and lose some sleep, it's only one day out of approximately 28,000. Don't sweat it.
Of course, this is easy advice to give if you don't have any children. ;)
Hey ArkieDukie, when do you close on your condo?
Yeah - my parents went househunting and left oldest sibling (18) in charge. They called to check on us - elementary school age kids are talking to parents as oldest sibling and 2 friends are sleeping off the party on various sofas in the house, cards all over the floor, etc. So BD may want to rethink leaving 15 year old in charge - not that "Andrew" will do anything wrong but you never know.
On the other hand - sibling was a Nat'l Merit scholar and went to an Ivy League school.
I hope the possible babysitter works out for you, BD, so you and hubby can go cheer extra loud for those of us miles away.
Tentatively set for April 24. I've had all sorts of problems with my loan - I'm currently on my 2nd loan officer and 2nd insurance agency. Fortunately this appears to be the winning combination.
My little bit of advice: do NOT let a personal banker do a mortgage for you. B of A does this, and it causes nothing but trouble. I say this based on my case, the case of someone else that I know, and the comments of the B of A Mortgage person that's handling my loan now. I had to start from scratch on my loan app because they prequalified me for a loan that I wouldn't have been able to get. Once I got someone who knew what they were doing, I qualified for a loan with lower closing costs and a lower interest rate. Assuming the loan goes through, that is.
The other thing I have learned is that condos are harder to buy than houses are. More condos are in foreclosure, so the loan qualification criteria are more stringent. Live and learn.
Gads, get the baby sitter & go!
Has anyone seen the NCAA tourney potpourri thread on the EK Board?http://www.dukebasketballreport.com/...ad.php?t=15342
It reminds me of the LTE, random musings but with a set topic.
I'm looking for my inner bad girl (note: NOT my inner b*tch). Can you please let me know if you see her? I have some channeling to do.
Not as good on the PWing over there however. Eight topics in one post . . . that's unthinkable ;):p:D
Bd, I vote with those who say go to the game. You have to yell for all of your sister Shin Kickers! :D
Number 2 son is a Duke fan, of course, goes without saying, but he's just not as into going to sporting events as his older brother. Plus, we're talking getting home at 1am. I know oldest will be cranky but functional the next day, number 2 son would not be functional.
We've done tag teams like that in the past. Mom and one child or dad and one child goes to the game/concert/tournament. Another alternative is an adult sitter and have them sleep overnight. We'll be OOT or I'd volunteer to escort you or your husband to the game;).
I should have thought to make that offer. However, the last, and only, time I went to the Sweet 16 to watch Duke they lost to KU in the first game. Worst part - I was staying in the KU hotel. I had an age reality check too - two kids in the elevator decided I was Nick Collison's mom. My first thought was I couldn't be his mom because I wasn't old enough.
Reality check was that I quickly realized that I could be his mother and would have been out of college (barely) when he was born.
Reality bites sometimes.
Hey, that might be fun, name your inner bad girl. I think mine is Sabrina.
I got a Pai Gow Poker app for my iPhone. Baaaaaad move. I'm addicted and I've only had it a day.
Hey, BD, what time are you leaving for the game so I know how to book my flight. ;):D
Don't know yet. Whoever is going is taking in Pitt-Xavier first. That's of course one more reason to send Andrew, his second favorite college b-ball team is Xavier. He's followed them for years. (He'd always root for Duke over Xavier but that's the only one.)
In the "Dog gone" thread Windsor reminded me I one of my post 20 life long goals has been in terms of naming my home, think lots of cats and a play on a Bond girl's name.
I was talking to Knights68 about naming my little house, though a little more seriously than the name above. He suggested, "Kitty Cottage." Thoughts anyone?
I'm really, really tired. This weekend is catching up w/ me now. Dayum, but I had fun, though. :)
12+ hours without a post?
What has become of the LTE? Any news about yogurt?
Wow ... just wow! [blatant attempt to mix threads]
Still suffering from watching the MSU/Duke game last night.
Cheers,
Lavabe
ETA: I apparently submitted this a second or two later than Ozzie. Glad to see the LTE active again.
Sorry, my social calendar has been packed the last week or so. And of course a game tomorrow night...
OMG, is it really only 9:30? Yikes. I'm wiped out. I thought I stayed on Pacific time while in Minny but I guess not. :( All of us that went are just exhausted. I guess too much... uh, something. :D
Anyway, clothes in the dryer then off to bed. G'nite all.
Good morning to the members of the LTE. Let's get those winning vibes and cheers heading Boston's way. BD & Ymo and any others that may be going to the game tonight. Please cheer extra hard for those that watch from a distance.
LGD LGD LGD
A babysitter has been located and I will be at the game tonight! GO DEVILS!!
Figured we all needed a good chuckle today.
at this picture.

Tilly - while LMAO, it made me wonder if that guy's head is mistaken for a big horse fly, what would be the power of that elephant tail swapping him in the head actually be???? ... so I did a quick search and low and behold found a better result of what happens should he slip and decide to pull the tail instead to keep from landing on his head... check out this story and link...
http://www.idilium.com/Australian_Stories/bush03.html
LOL - It could apply also, but then the difference between a goose and a Tar Heel also came to mind, especially when that elephant yielded an excess amount of relief in an uncontrollable manner!!!! ;-) I could copy in both of those places and get two more posts! You are soo smart!!!! :D
I'm doing virtual double high fives to my LTE buddies!!
GO DUKE!!!!
I'm kind of nervous about the game tonight. Oy gevalt!
It's only 1918 (7:18pm). I can't stand waiting. I'm ready for tip-off.
Go Duke!!!
Home watching MBB now.
posting while in the Garden while waiting for the game to start. I guess that makes me a PW.
Loopy kicked me out of snrubchat for telling Chris, "I <3 U."
Funny how it's acceptable to type all types of profanities directed towards our worthy opponents, but typing something positive towards a fellow poster warranted a ban.
Well, I learned my lesson. No posting to the LTE from the venue. Sorry no in game reports...sitting next to the Villanova student section. Lots of energy...not a whole lot of creativity.
It was.
Awful I mean.
But strangely easier to stomach I think than sitting at home would have been.
As soon as I realized that snrub had hiccupped last night, I crashed as well. And then the game went out of hand.
I apologize to everyone.:o
And the worst part of all is that I live in Lexington. Which means, there is WAY too much rumor mongering around here about basketball coaches who should coach at UK. If I hear any more discussion about Calipari, Pitino, and Donovan, I think I will scream!!
As for snrub ... I really am glad it's there, and I do appreciate the folks running it. But the hiccup last night interfered with my mojo, and hurt the team. That and the fact that I was not wearing my lucky sweatshirt ... and I was not in a full lotus position under the bedroom ceiling fan. ;)
I'm sure I wasn't in proper viewing position either - so you aren't alone in causing the lost. I will fess up to my part in messing with the mojo. I was not repeating all of the things from the past victories.
I'll do better next year. ;)
I'm sorry you have to put up with all the rumor mongering. It does get old fast.
Lavabe - have you been able to touch base with all your friends/colleagues in Madagascar? I hope all is well with them.
Last night I was lurking in snrub at the start of the game, then left to help the mojo. When I tried to get back in at halftime, I couldn't. Midway through the second half I saw BillyBreen was on FB so I sent him a message that there were problems. He responded a couple of minutes later and said he didn't know there was a problem - usually some one sends him an email but no one did, so he didn't now there was a problem. Two minutes later it was back up, although it didn't help the team shoot any better
Snrub is a nice tool for us to use and thank you BB for setting it up and running it. Football season is just around the corner! :D
Send billybreen an email and ask him why. I think loopy is a friend of his.
Perhaps there is a no love rule in the. From this passive observer, it certainly seems okay be destructively negative towards someone, but show a little love YOU'RE FIRED! I just had to work that line in. heh heh
Things are very complex in the capital city. There have been two months of organized protests against the democratically elected president. More than 100 people during the last two months were killed in protests. Pressure built up, and eventually the military threw their support away from the president. The president eventually stepped aside, and is now in Swaziland. He ceded power to the military, who then they turned it over to the protest leader.
The US response to the takeover/change in government/coup/putsch (these are all words that have been used to describe the situation) has been to suspend non-humanitarian aid to the country, removed ALL Peace Corps volunteers, and issued a travel warning for all Americans. To be clear, Norway has also suspended non-humanitarian aid, and the EU, AU, and most of the region's leaders had spoken strongly against what happened.
The deposed president's supporters have been rallying this week in the capital, but today's reports on Reuters are that the police have used tear gas a second day in a row to disperse the crowds.
Also, as per a report two days ago in NatGeo News and picked up in NYT & Nature.com, at least one national park has been affected by this. Park rangers abandoning posts, and crime folks/loggers moving in. Fortunately, I have four independent reports from folks where I work who say that where I'll be has not been affected by all of this.
There's too much going on in the capital city, and I don't pretend to know what is happening, nor will I speculate as to what will happen.
It's tragic. I hope things straighten up very quickly.
Lavabe
I believe there's a discussion of this already in Nature.com and in the NYT and with National Geographic. Take away the primary trees, and you'll also have to take out a lot more to get those trees to market. Habitat loss=bad times for lemurs and surrounding human populations.
One other point: the big crop in the area is vanilla. Madagascar is facing a MAJOR loss of vanilla due to a fungus.
I am sure this is affecting people and the economy in the same region as the national park in question.
Lavabe
I'm listening to Marvin Gaye. Let's Get It On.
Found out today that my loan was approved! I'm moving in a month! :D
DiK, I hear that you're going to get some snow this weekend. Have you been to the store to stock up on bread and milk?
These games are blow outs and I'm bored.
There's lots to read over on the main board but too much negativity for my liking.
