He’s a good contender, too. See, I knew I posted that “Spice Grohls” shirt for someone!

Grohl and Vedder are both great, but for my money, I would take Chris Cornell.
It's a Donna Fargo kind of morning.
Fingers crossed for a snow day tomorrow! Guess it loses its luster when you’re working from home anyway. Got a new CEO starting tomorrow so looking forward to some upper management housecleaning in the coming months.

Pennsylvania has an odd set of chocolate magnates. This guy has been running red politics in PA for a long, long time and also is a 4th generation chocolatier. He was like a big ol' conservative Easter bunny around DC, just flinging chocolate at everyone left and right. Well, right...
Anyway, he got in trouble for a whole slew of things and his co-conspirator committed suicide in front of an audience on live television. It's a morbid read so if that sort of thing makes you uncomfortable, avoid it.
Weird chocolate PA.
Learned today: Christian Pulisic is apparently from Hershey.
I saw an out of control Grateful Dead show in the pouring rain at Hershey park in ‘85 IIRC. Simply electric, in every sense possible.
Wilt Chamberlain had his 100-point game in Hershey.
I have toured Hershey several times, but never saw an Oompa-Loompah.
That’s all I’ve got.
Daycare issued the joint weather-Omicron alert. No surprise on either. They're adding precautions to the COVID protocol and offering credits to any parents that want to keep their kids out this first post-holiday week, which we had planned on doing anyway.
Meanwhile, the temperature is starting to drop. Looking forward to it getting cold again, frankly.
Overnight lows in the 20s for us. Brrrrr!!!!
For fans of a school that will likely never participate, we seem awfully concerned about a playoff format.
You can be a fan of the sport independent of Duke’s chances of participating though.
For example, I like the Winter Olympics. It does not concern me that Duke has only had one Olympic athlete compete in those games (earning a silver medal memory serves me right, and I believe that he and a teammate were the first two African-Americans to medal for the U.S. in a winter event). The events are fun.
I like college football. How it is conducted interests me. FWIW.
I like curling but wish there was more blood.
The Figure Skating Championships are now requiring proof of vaccination or a negative test for entry. If you are planning to go to every session, one negative test won't cut it for the full weekend. I will be wearing my day-glo orange sweatshirt for the Men's Championship event on Sunday. If the cameras pan past me, you won't miss the sweatshirt. I'm not sure how far down I am. I'm not front row, but I might be visible in a wider crowd shot.
For those of you like ClemmonsDevil who can't get enough puns, Tank McNamara has a great one today: http://www.gocomics.com/tankmcnamara/2022/01/03.
1st work day of 2022 done.
I went down a google wormhole and started playing Stratego, a game from my youth, online. Good game. No idea why I thought about it yesterday.
Catching here by way of saying that, sorry, but the Chick-fil-A chicken salad sandwich is distinctly not sanitary, at least not universally. My grandmother contracted a case of food poisoning from one that prompted a bout of vomiting so violent that it tore her esophagus partly from her stomach and she damn near died. She never ate Chick-fil-A again (and is now unrelatedly dead).
I really don't like people.
As a mediocre white guy I feel exceptionally qualified (of course I do) to say this: mediocre white guys have the tendency to over-inflate their importance. And they (we) love to talk about it.
I do not need to look it up.

Me culpa alert: I misread the post on the Pandemic thread and issued the corresponding apology.
I always wonder about that. Are most people on the internet not married? I actually meant this apology, but do you know how many things I have apologized for that I absolutely didn't mean? I'm basically the France of interpersonal relationships. I surrender even if the fight is between two other parties. Next we will discuss how Prussia's victory over France in 1871 changed the narrative about France from the biggest bully on the block.
Taco Tuesday.
Coming along.

Lite Brite meet Larry King
Two games, two wins.
It’s funny that they place reality survival shows in places people already live.
The first leg of my flight to Nashville (Boston to DC) has been cancelled.
I actually think this is a terrific concept, one I'd watch.
Interestingly, there are significant pockets of NYC's everyday economy that are still very old school in terms of their technological connectivity and methods of payment. Like, you don't Google a good bodega; you just walk approx 1.5 blocks in any direction and find one (or ask somebody). You don't swipe a card for a hot dog or gyro at a cart; you pony up paper bills.
I'd submit that you can get by better in NYC without a smartphone and with only cash than in the vast majority of American cities, maybe more easily than in any other American city.
driving to Stowe with wife and dog to buy seafood; this is what passes for a day out these days...
So sorry to hear about this, BD. I know how much you were looking forward to your adventure as a boon to your mental health. I'm tempted to make a Neal Page/Del Griffith joke, but I somehow don't think that would be helpful.
Fingers crossed that things work out somehow.
BD - I hope you can get flights arranged so you don't miss anything or, at least, not much.
Rebooked for later today. Getting in around 9pm now. Fingers crossed.
Heading out to the airport in a few minutes. In the meantime, I have 2 tickets to the Miami game on Saturday that my oldest son is not going to be able to use - does anybody here want them? Send me a PM. I won't see the PM until late tonight but I'll get back either then or sometime tomorrow.
X-ray equipment is getting classier. The one I worked on today was giving Error Code 9F.
For Aimo: A Canadian customer of mine sent me a message that said if you went by only looks I'm a 6 but if you factor in humor, personality and ability then I'm a solid 2. I love these people.
Sigh. That's it. BD - hope you make it to Music City safely this evening.
Elmo hates Rocco.
I'm going to have to hand out sporks to random posters because I can't spork the posts that I need to spork.
Do y’all flame much?
Stowe has a seafood market, the owner goes to Boston twice a week and fetches huge volumes of outstanding seafood...he's been a fixture in town for decades, his fish is WAY better than anything grocery chains carry.
By the way, 2021 and 2022 have been his best years ever....a third of homes in Stowe are owned by out of staters and when the pandemic hit nearly all of them moved to Vermont to wait things out, they have lots of money and they like their fish.
Last night we had "oven fried" haddock...also picked up four pounds of swordfish, four lbs of salmon, a few pounds of sole and yellowfin tuna...
Hah. Yeah, I haven't issued any flames but I've been given 2. One for a post about not liking Penn State and one for using the phrase "shickled titless".
I was surprised both times that of all the ridiculous stuff I post, those were the two...
I've been flamed multiple times, never in retaliation for giving them (that I can remember - I think I've given one or two at best). I had one given to me by a poster who was sure I flamed him - when I didn't. Went to all the trouble to prove to him I didn't, which he later admitted. Thought the least he could have done is come back with a pitchfork. But he didn't. Oh well.
The only thing that bugs me is when a person flames me, but never comes back at another time to give sporks even if they acknowledge a good post on the board. I find that a bit weird.
One last point about flames. The first flame I issued I immediately regretted. I reached out to the poster with a PM telling them how sorry I was. I also went out of my way to give them multiple sporks to try and make it right.
OK, I've done my penance on this one. True Confessions are over.
There are snipers on some of these threads.
Hamlets are those little Danish hams, right?
Got a wonderful update on the (boozing) idiot neighbors, aka The Clampetts. Ellie Mae and her stripper boyfriend stopped by a friend's house, a house that has a well equipped bar...but evidentlly Ellie Mae and boyfriend wanted more variety, so they invited our friends outside to their "bar car." Their car is loaded up with about 25 opened bottles of booze and they cruise around pouring drinks for themselves and friends. What could go wrong?
Our daycare apparently had a fire alarm today. We’re also expecting snow tomorrow so they sent an email to all the parents titled, “Fire and Snow”, and now I think my son may be going to Westeros and competing for some toddler iron throne.
dump run!
I'm starting to thing the word "degenerates" is associated with the wrong thread...
dump run followed by five mile walk in the snow, I'm done for the day. Just feed me.
I think people should be required to type out "I am not a lawyer" if they are not, in fact, a lawyer. I think there are some states where using that acronym could get you investigated.
Maybe we should just stick to zombie threads and anniversaries?
I'm guilty
Baby, I'm guilty
And I'll be guilty for the rest of my life
How come I never do
What I'm supposed to do
How come nothing that I try to do
Ever turns out right
You know--You know how it is with me, Baby
You know I just can't stand myself
It takes a whole lotta medicine
For me to pretend that I'm somebody else.
— Randy Newman
You would think at some point I would get tired of doing and saying stupid things. But I seemingly never do. It's funny, that I am exceptional at never getting drawn into an argument in my professional life yet I lack that thing that makes people back down with interpersonal conflicts. This is not true with Aimo though, but to be fair, she's terrifying.

I said Bbbrrrrrrr, it’s cold in here. There must be some toros in the atmosphere.
-1 now
We're at 53 but it feels colder than that.
50 in Tuscaloosa but headed towards 60. Feels good. Was 42 and windy yesterday and I hated it.
Do we get bonus points for killing threads on other boards?
I went into a Hallmark store for the first time since the 90s today. I don't know how they're still in business, frankly.
I managed a Hallmark store when I was just out of college. I got that job because I worked construction in the summers for a guy who built and updated Hallmark stores. Perhaps this is a shock, but I was the only person on the construction crew who was in college. Hallmarks are privately owned, but the owners pay a retail licensing fee. Individual Hallmark stores make their money from non-Hallmark gifts. You're welcome.
Corn dogs need a rebranding. I’d go meat twinkies.
No bueno.
Domestic vacuum dance.
So, do I drive to Phoenix or should I try and get a plane ticket? Going next week...leary of cancellations still being an issue.
I would argue the 2 most talented mainstream bands of my lifetime are REM and the Beastie Boys. Foo Fighters get an honorable mention. Nirvana as well.
14 hours each way. But flying is a 7 hour endeavor when you include getting to the airport, etc.
I do believe there were 4 direct flights a day back and forth between PHX and SAT when I went in November. (On American) They are down to 3 per day and now instead of using Airbus A321(180 person capacity) they are using Canadair RJ700s with 65 capacity. Not sure if Southwest picked up the volume or not.
The other way to think about this is financially and what do I value more? 14 hours or the approximately $500 differential between driving and flying.
I think the "we got outcoached" hot take following losses is the dumbest take.
But it’s true sometimes.
The biggest problem, though, is people not wearing their lucky clothes correctly. I thought about changing my lucky underwear during the game, but was afraid the other folks in my section in Cameron would object. Besides, if the ushers were enforcing the mask requirement, they might object to a wardrobe change.
The Clash are still the only band that matters.
