It seems that the Internet was down for a while...
We are being outposted by a thread on Plantation Shutters...no wonder the knitters have us beat so easily.
While driving around today, I passed a car with the license plate XXX YBT. I suddenly started thinking of getting a vanity plate.
Well, at least the right team won in the former situation.
I just finished watching the Panthers win. I just can't whole-heartedly pull for them because of 2 obvious reasons: "carolina" Panthers and although their blue has a little turquoise in it, it is way to close to baby slime blue for me. Besides, the Bears were my first pro football team and I did get to take an undergrad class at Lake Forest College with Urlacher's little brother :D Da Bears!
I guess that's me (my head anyway) second from left at the bottom of the page, but I'm not playing the kazoo in the pic.
And here's a better picture of my daughter (saying "Oh", in the Duke rugby shirt, also to the left of the players) and her husband behind her.
All publicity is good publicity?
So, was the Duke vs Q game as much of a blowout as it sounds? More importantly, any opinions on the directions of this team over the next few months? They seemed to turn a corner at USC, and Coach P got some great kudos in the media after that one. Is the chemistry gelling? Can we expect any noise in March?
Oz - any good sandwiches at the game?

:D
Catching up after a few days finalizing Christmas preparations and spending time with family in town. They are out of town today and will be back tomorrow for the rest of the week. We have been having fun with Guitar Hero World Tour Band or something like that - vocals, drums, and guitar. It is pretty humorous to see some of us trying this but the kids are pretty good.
Congratulations on the house, Tilly. Look forward to seeing pictures.
I have nothing to add to the pastrami discussion - I'm not sure I have ever had any pastrami.
I hope everyone has had a wonderful holiday and safe travels.
I've posted pictures of the house I'm buying in a photo album in my profile here on DBR.
I have my home inspection and termite (or rather wood eating insect) inspection this Wednesday morning. Keeping my fingers crossed both inspections go well.
Very nice, thanks for posting the pix!! Good luck with the inspection and all the rest of the preliminaries...
About to leave Vegas and go back to LA. Sad. :(
Ok kids, here's the rundown:
Thurs- Evil trip out there. Went to dinner at parents' friends' house. Had matzo ball soup and latkes (among other items). :D
Fri- Went to outlets w/ mom. Got a GREAT parking space. Got 2 Coach bags (tee hee) and a top & skirt at Chicos. Wanted stuff from Burberry but it was more of a madhouse than Coach so decided to defer til another trip. Went to Nora's for dinner (my fave Italian restaurant in LV) w/ the parents and their friends.
Sat- Went to Bellagio Gardens Conservatory or whatever it's called at the Bellagio to see their holiday display. Trafffffffffffffffffffic getting down there, but another beautiful parking space. Not impressed w/ Gardens. Nice, but they've done better holiday displays before. Was going to go to Encore, but decided to defer til another trip. Went to dinner at the Suncoast Coffee Shop then to see an Eagles cover band. Ummmmm interesting. Sounded ok but visually freaked me out (not in a good way).
Sun- Watched NE/Buffalo game & had breakfast w/ dad at a friend's. Came home and watched the remainder of the Giants game. Went to Costco & Smiths w/ mom to get dinner because family friends were coming over for dinner and to watch SD game. That was really nice- much better than going to a restaurant- we all relaxed and hung out and caught up (it'd been a while).
Mon- A whole bunch o'nuttin, then I came back to LA. Oh, decided not to keep one of the Coach bags.
So no, nothing I can't tell you about. Came to some freakishly eerie realizations about life (mine) and stuff like that, and wonder if I'm starting a midlife crisis, but hey, what's visiting the folks for?
PS Popcorn machine is smaller than I thought but still way cool. Good popcorn too!
Edit: No pastrami.
I like that idea. :D And green is his new color, so that definitely works in my favor.
Australian Shepherds named Georgia, and her humans, are always welcome in my house.
Wow! Sounds like a trip to my parents. Glad you enjoyed your time with your parents. Now, on to the Rose Bowl. :D
I love my Coach bag. LOVE IT!!!!
My husband got it for me as anniversary present. Here's how it went. I was at the local mall with a Coach store. I went into the jewelry store next to the Coach store and found out my ring size. (I don't wear a wedding ring anymore because I've developed an allergy to nickel which is used in gold jewelry. Apparently platinum rings don't cause this probrem. I've told my husband I need a new wedding ring but he's got to go get it for me, I'm not buying one for myself - hence finding out the ring size.) OK, back to my Coach bag. After finding out my ring size I went into the Coach store and bought a bag. I took it home, left it in the very nice gift bag it came in and waited for my anniversary. (It was only a week later, no need to admire my restraint.) Then on the morning of our anniversary I made breakfast for my husband brought it up to him in bed and very sweetly asked what he'd gotten me for our anniversary. "Oh geez, honey, I forgot." Then I went to the closet pulled out the bag and said, "No you didn't, how thoughtful, just what I wanted."
I still don't have a wedding ring, at least not one I can wear, but I have a great Coach bag.
Ouch. Here's an answer to my own question. http://www.coach.com/Content/collect...categoryId=365
But to put things into perspective, most are a lot less than a new r7 driver. :D
I wasn't trying to deceive. I just cut out the middle man, my husband. He's in line for the world's worst gift giver. In truth, he was glad he didn't have to do the shopping himself.
Cost? Can we divide it by the number of times he didn't get me anything for our anniversary? Can I add in the number of times he skipped my birthday too? If so, it's downright cheap.
That said, he did a great job for Christmas this year.
And I always tell him, he doesn't have to be elaborate, I just want tangible proof that he thinks about me, every once in awhile. But yeah, this time, it was just a great excuse to buy myself a nice bag.

I fell way behind the post curve and finally caught up! Happy Holidays to all!
A bird feeder, some specialty knitting needles, and a clay teapot made in Ireland. The teapot was from the boys as well.
He got a new jacket to replace his old frayed one and a bottle of single malt scotch - Towmore. It's a Speyside for you scotch drinkers around here. The boys gave him a Starbucks coffee gift pack.
Here http://www.coachoutletweb.com/ or in a retail outlet location?
Things have warmed up a bit here in the midwest, DA. Did you take the cold with you?
And now, for my travel saga.
Trip #1 - From Seattle to Omaha via Denver - flight delays on each segment, but no more than 1/2 hour each way.
Trip #2 - Drive from Omaha to Minneapolis and back - COLD. On the way up, blowing snow on the freeways the ENTIRE trip. Visibility dropped to about 10 feet way too frequently. Sunny on the way home, and luckily beat the forecast freezing sleet coming in that night.
(Trip for Mr. DA - 7" of snow leaving Seattle, greeted in Omaha by the freezing sleet.)
Trip #3, Part A - Monday, Dec. 22 - Made it out of Omaha, but stuck in Denver at 12PM, b/c all flights into Seattle cancelled. Made it to all buildings in the Denver airport, including the New Belgium Brewery (see Ymm Beer thread.) Told we could be #'s 96-97 on standby list for flights to Seattle, or get confirmed flight on Thurs., Dec. 26. Umm, no. Cancelled remainder of travel with Frontier, got a flight to Salt Lake City on Southwest. Finally made it out of Denver at 11:45pm.
Trip #3, Part B - Tues, 8AM. The DRIVE from Salt Lake City to Seattle - woke up to new snow falling, multiple accidents on interstate out of town. Rental agency only had front-wheel drive cars. Picked up chains for it, just in case.
2.5 hours later, reach Idaho border, only to discover the interstate was closed. 90 mile detour back into Utah, up to Pocatello, and then west.
Fortune finally smiled on us the rest of the way home - lots of snow around us, but weather and roads were clear. The final pass, Snoqualmie, was just starting to get hit with the next snow storm when we went through at 11PM. (It later dropped another foot of snow that night/morning.)
We had to go to the airport, pick up Mr. DA's car, our luggage (it made the standby flight), and return the rental. Home at 1:45AM Wed. morning.
We were pretty much snowed in for the rest of the week. We probably got close to 14" of snow, which Mr. DA said was the most he'd ever seen since 1990. It started to melt on Saturday, and now, we're mostly back to normal.
I'm really glad to be home, heck, I was even happy to come in to work yesterday.
Where does liverwurst fit in the grand scheme of things?
We could design a cat carrier that used an air pump and a filtering mechanism. The cat is sealed inside. Fresh air is pumped in. Cat air is filtered and pumped out. Voilà! :D
Classic! It was rattling around my brain and I don't have it so I googled and found it on YouTube. Now I'm listening over and over. There's a good one live in Copenhagen.

I must say, I enjoy the Kennedy Center Honors each year. This year has an exceptionally fine cast of honorees- The Who (Roger & Pete), Morgan Freeman, Twyla Tharp, Barbara Streisand... can't remember who else. I always look forward to it, and I'm glad to have caught it tonight.
It just started, and Morgan Freeman was first. BB King played for him (the man is 157 years old and can still jam!), and Denzel Washington presented the honor. Sweet!
Lily Tomlin is honoring Twyla Tharp. Random.
Twyla sits there looking like she's got a stick up her... backside. That's pretty much Twyla. Would it kill her to smile, ever?
Hmmm don't love the first piece being performed- sone Sinatra by a pair from ABT (American Ballet Theatre)... That's Life is definitely better than Strangers in the Night... My Way was eh... Seriously that's all they chose for performances? Yeek.
Edit: I'm Alaa Abdelnaby.
Soooo... Jack Black honoring The Who?!?!?
Hmmm Joss Stone doing My Generation... not bad actually... different... good band. Now it's Dave Grohl doing Who Are You... wow! This is rockin! (Same band btw- they're really good.) Betty LeSomeone is doing Love Rain On Me- again, wow! Soulful! Different but I like it. Rob Thomas doing Teenage Wasteland? Um, pass. Band is still good, though. :) Rob just doesn't have the voice for this song. Sorry, Rob. LOL but they have a chorus of NYC cops & firefighters singing the chorus in the background... funnnnnnnny!
Edit: I'm Chris Redding.
Laura Bush honoring George Jones?!? WTF? Was the person who was supposed to do that sick?
So let's see... I'm not a country fan (blech) but they've got Brad Paisley (he's nice to look at), Randy Travis (yawn), Alan Jackson, & Garth Brooks.
Ho hum. I don't like country. Sorry, George.
Edit: Now I'm Bob Fleischer.
Barbara Streisand being honored by Queen Latifah (who, btw, looks amazing).
Ok, so a Glenn Close tribute... Idina Menzel singing Don't Rain On My Parade (amazing!), Beyonce singing The Way We Were (well, it's Beyonce... subdued for her but good), a dance number w/ Ne-Yo singing (WTF??? he's actually doing it well but still seems odd to see R&B guy doing Rat Pack style), & some people I've never heard of singing Somewhere from West Side Story (yikes).
Edit: Now I'm back to being nobody. ;)
From this guy's perspective, country isn't so bad...
Do you own a working 8-track player? Wow! You should take that to Antiques Road Show.
Absolutely it works. And it is a Quadrophonic machine. You haven't lived until you've heard Shaft in Quad, with the music spinning around the room from the four speakers! Problem is with the tapes. The silver tape that holds the continuous loop together (and tells the head to change tracks) does not hold anymore, so when the loop gets to the silver tape it comes apart, which makes quite a mess of tape in the machine and usually ruins the cartridge, so I've stopped actually using it. But the machine still works.
No discussion of Emminence Front?
The Who's Eminence Front.
At these sorts of honors shows, they sure do get some strange combinations. I half expect Beck to do a Who cover.
On a VH1 show, I once saw Gretchen Wilson & Alice in Chains do Heart's Barracuda. Surprisingly, GW did a great job with it.
Cheers,
Lavabe
I don't want to send us to one of the other boards, but I'm sure that someone is having a field day on our poor 3 pt shooting today.
Never recall hearing Eminence Front...but then there is a lot of stuff by the Boss that I don't know and I am a much bigger fan of him than The Who.
Through the miracle of youtube.
youtube? What's that? haha...yeah, I just need to go looking for stuff.
In the world of coincidence. Made a joke to my brother on the phone about an eminence front on Monday. Thought, "Now there's a song I haven't heard in a long time." Heard it on the radio driving home from work yesterday. Now this. It's the week of Eminence Front for me.
It is definitely a put on...
M
:rolleyes::cool::eek::D
Saw The Who play live in the fall of '69 as a freshman at Denison University. They played at the indoor track field house which was basically a huge metal trash can cut in half and laid on its side. They played the entire Tommy album. Best part was it was free as part of a once a semester day off called by a secret group of students called the wingless angels. Nobody knew when the day was until it happended and there was always some type of free big rock band concert. First time for a live concert for me. First time for a lot of things that night. Great memory!
M = mille or one thousand years in Latin. That was my 1,000th post in this thread.
Happy New Year to all! May the thread continue to live long and prosper! :D
Black-eyed peas, anyone?
Almost time to hit the road...
Heading out to the Rose Bowl... Fight On!
Oops, DA beat me to it. Sorry. That's one of the disadvantages of not reading the DBR for 3-4 days and spending an hour or two reading/posting to catch up:o.
However, one of the advantages is the amount of PWing one can do in a short period of time while playing catch up ball:o.
Now I understand why team have so much difficulty coming back from big deficits. I've just spent the last 2 hours recovering from a 40 point, err, post deficit, have cut the difference to a 2 possession game and I am out of energy:o.
Yep, I know the feeling.
Why is the fried rice where I live colored yellow, not brown?
They are not using saffron on the rice. I grew up in a day when all fried rice was brown. Now I can't find any brown fried rice.
Almost as bad as soft matzah balls.
I make fried rice at home...the only seasoning I put in it is soy sauce. I don't know how it cannot be brown.
Are they called potstickers everywhere in the country BUT Lexington? They referred to them as "dumplings."
Blasphemy.
I grew up with dumplings...but then my family(g-parents, father) spent time in China.
ILJ informs me that they didn't give us our fortune cookies.
ON NEW YEAR'S DAY!!
How else am I going to find out how 2009 will be for me?
Maybe because fortune cookies are really Japanese?
http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/j...neral_tso.html
About 3 minutes in...
Ymm, Pad Thai!!
Yes, Thai will suffice.
My wife ordered chicken and cashews, and I ordered Szechuan chicken & veggies. They filled out my order fine, but they gave her Szechuan chicken & cashews.
She can't stand spice.
It was yummy.
But I need my fortune cookie.
Well all, I'm home from the Rose Bowl. :D
I'm tired and hungry but I am currently sitting on the couch with my feet up and I'm watching the Orange Bowl (btw, how are either of these teams in a BCS bowl? seriously. The OB should be ashamed.)
In any event, I'll post pics soon, though some of you got a lovely picture message from me. :)
Ok, here's a link to a mini-album I posted of some pics from the Rose Bowl. For my FB friends, there are more there.
Thanks for posting the photos. It was a great game on tv. Sanchez was amazing. LOads of color, good playing, and plenty of great scenes.
Questions from the tv:
1) Just how low was that Stealth Bomber? FREAKY low!
2) Cloris Leachman YET again!! Ugh!!
Yeah, watching a little Orange Bowl after that ... it might as well have been the International Bowl.
Cheers,
Lavabe
When did they quit showing the Orange Bowl halftime show? It was always fun to watch and laugh at the extravaganza.
It is now time for the post season let down. My sister and her family have left for PA and I have to get used to not having them around. Time to catch up on the Boards and my personal e-mail.
I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe New Year.
Thanks to the miracle of youtube, it's the Doobie Brothers.
IIRC, last year it was ZZTop.
1) The Stealth WAS freaky low. Here's another shot:
Attachment 590
2) Couldn't really tell it was Cloris from where I was. Gosh, darn.
Ok gang, I don't want to hit the Ticket Exchange board with this because I haven't made any decisions yet, but...
What's the chance that one of you might, just might have an extra ticket for either 1/17 Georgetown or 2/7 Miami? I may just try to swing a quick trip out East... just a thought. And of course, you'd get ME sitting with YOU at the game as a bonus!
I love the flyover by the loud planes...I don't want to be protected by aliens. I want a bunch of loud guys who can kick butt. Unless the aliens can kick their butts.
I always loved the flyovers at Arrowhead. It seemed like they were only a few feet above the tallest point of the stadium then someone complained about the noise level in the stadium during the flyover. It turns out they were actually flying below their ceiling. We still got flyovers after that, but they were never as close again.
Sue71 - did you use a special camera to get the picture? ;)
I am at this moment downloading pictures from my digital camera to my computer. I feel so 21st century!
LOL. I was just talking with a really old friend of mine - he's retired - and his wife got him an iPod for Christmas, so he said the exact same thing to me a few minutes ago. He was rocking out to some 60's music.
What's the over/under on getting to 8000 posts this weekend? I'd say it's a done deal.
My midwest bias is showing - I should have made that 11:59 EST.
My wife and I attended an aviation week set of flyovers in St. Louis, in the 90's. The stealths were supposed to fly over, but ue to weather, they were unable to do so. Instead we had a low flying B-52.
Talk about LOUD!!
Impressive, but for another reason completely.
I'm home now. Yay. :)
Had to work a WBB game tonight.
Now I'm chilling on the sofa again (recurring theme?). I'm bored.
1/24 or 2/7? Discuss.
No one wants to discuss Jan. 24 vs. Feb. 7?
Her photo almost looks Photoshopped.:)
But it was VERY real and VERY low, at least from what I could see on TV. I thought no more than 500 feet above the ground. I half expected Roswell, New Mexico aliens to start popping out of it. At which point our only hope would have been Jeff Goldblum to figure out how to attack the mother ship.
I do!! Sorry, I was sleeping when you posted :o Okay, I say go for the 24th, too. Sure thing and all . Since it's a noon game we can celebrate afterwards. How about a DBR get together at Tyler's Tap Room? Many, many excellent beers and not too far from campus.
Oh yeah, GTHC, GTH!!!!
1/24 is the offer on the table, unless you have a better one?
The better one might be if I can get work for pay for a LAX-LAS-SLC-RDU-LAX trip for the 2/7 game, but I'm not feeling that... is it better if I just do a quick, albeit long (distance) trip for 1/24 that I pay for, or a long Super Bowl-business conference-Duke trip that I get mostly covered? Will I even be coherent by the time the 2/7 game rolls around if I go that route?
Decisions, decisions. I'm leaning in your direction, Oz, btw. I'll decide in the next few days as long as that's still ok. :)
Now I have to look up hotel/car rates... sigh.
When was our goal again? Was it tonight? If so, we'd better get with it - we've got 40 posts to go!
Of course, I could do a bit of PWing and get there by myself, but that's not nearly as much fun as drafting. Who's with me?
