like aimo, I never felt a bite nor could I find one on my body...only when I found the welt could I discern a wee puncture dot in the middle...

Thankfully you’re okay now, but please be careful! With a reaction like that, you might want to carry an epi pen.
Not to be an alarmist, but in the 60’s, my Sunday school teacher was stung multiple times after mowing over a yellow jacket nest. They rushed him to a hospital, but he expired in route.
As for me, I’m fortunate to be immune to yellow jackets, wasps, hornets, mosquitoes, poison ivy & poison oak. Probably due to being raised on a farm as a kid, with constant exposure to all of the above. But chiggers love me. The feeling isn’t mutual.
I do have a couple of epi pens, but of course I failed to pack them with me on my trip, d'oh! I often carry them around or put several benedryl in my pocket when i'm in the woods...I seem (per the allergist's testing) immune from the same stuff you mention...just don't know what the mystery insect could have been...
Oh, I did not see or hear mine either, until well after the immediate reactions and I was inside the house. Turns out I took a couple into the house with me before I shook them, and the cats helped us to find them so we could swat them. They were much tinier than the ones involved in my previous encounters, but they still had the same distinctive yellow-and-black markings and still caused the same allergic-type reaction in me.
I'll admit that I cannot fathom how you could have riled them up on pavement ... but no other cause occurs to me either.
Dude...
Going for it tomorrow
