Folks, this thread is not getting to 20,000 before it's bday.
Warning - bragging aunt here.
Just watched CBS Sports Inside College Football piece on how Clemson is tracking their football players' sleep. Three people were interviewed - Coach Swinney, Ray Ray McCloud, and Nephew Alex.
Having my sleep tracked would be interesting. To me.
4am work call this morning. Rest of the day is going to be a little rough.
On the bright side, someone brought in leftover cupcakes from a Halloween celebration.
Long drive home from Ocracoke with one dog instead of two. :-(
Yes, hoowee, boy-oh. Finally got the joke. Several steps behind but in full agreement.
Here comes the end of daylight saving (or is it the beginning?) hate hate hate the short days. I think I'm bummed in advance.
8 posts a day, you say? This one gets us halfway there.
I dislike short days and getting up before sunrise.
Friday morning sales meeting cancelled!!!!
Time to celebrate.
Cancelled or Canceled...which do you prefer?
ll.
Two spaces after a period.
Oxford comma.
Always.
Oxford comma.
Yes, always.
However, when it comes to the second space, there are some fonts where it really isn't needed. Also, on the rare occasions when I tweet, I sometimes need that second space for other more pressing thoughts or to keep my tweet grammatically correct. And when it come to grammar, I will sacrifice a convention made necessary by the typewriter before I will sacrifice actual grammar.
Grammarians of the world, unite!
As the son-in-law of an English professor and a lover of letters in general, I am frequently dismayed by the blatant lack of attention paid to such things in modern society.
My fat thumbs and misguided autocorrect expose me to critique when "writing" on my phone, but the complete lingual disarray I witness on a daily basis gives me heartburn.
As to the goal, if we reach 20,000 posts before Dec. 20th - great - but I will view the project as a success if we get to 20,000 on the day. I don't know if that changes the calculations any. I could do the math myself but . . .
so over this day.
And now the looming holidays begin to creep upon the calendar...
That's all I gots today.
Are we all staying up to change our clocks together? Or just watch them change themselves? What is the proper beverage for the occasion?
Nothing on the 5th. We may need to pick up the pace. But then again, maybe not.
Beautiful sunrise here this morning. I suspect it has something to do with the time change.
Half-marathon is done and dusted. Yesterday marked my first day without a run since July. It was beautiful.
Good for you luburch!
I, otoh, cleaned out all the old recipes and reorganized the remainders into subsets. We mapped out the new swing set parameters too.
Whew! What a weekend!
And I am super tired and irritated by the DBR Farewell thread. Hash, rehash, mince, chop, repeat repeat repeat. BORING.
Had a great conversation with Nephew Alex yesterday. He really enjoys working with the Clemson football team. Got his version of the team running to help when a car went into the water as practice ended. Someone from the Clemson staff came to the Duke strength and conditioning staff. Alex got a chance to visit with him over the weekend and he is liking his new position.
I told Alex that I'm jealous - he was able to come up with passes for his parents to come to a game this year. I want Aunt passes. Since he is on target to defend his dissertation next July, that probably won't happen. (Unless he gets hired full time for next season.)
Enjoy the game. If you run into a tall guy named Alex, ask if he has an Aunt in Kansas (he actually has more than one aunt in Kansas). :D
I'm running a 5k on Saturday. It will be my first real race since the stress fracture. I will run it in Grafton - the 30th different town in my quest to run a 5k or longer in every city and town in Massachusetts. Only 321 to go!
The Monumental Marathon in Indianapolis. Starting line was a five minute walk for me so it made sense :)
Best of luck with the 5k!
Why did the killer rabbits thread get locked? Anybody know? Don't repost the problem if it's going to get us locked! We've got a deadline!
I mean, I don't need to know that badly. But a description of the problem that won't get us locked will bring us one post closer to our goal.
I think a bunny kind of went berserk?
Or maybe a pancake stunned a bunny.
Inquiring minds want to know.
I’m concerned. I think the killer bunny lobby got to the mods. “It’s too soon to discuss.”
First, they take your killer bunny thread. Then, they come for you. History repeats itself in insidious ways.
Maybe if we had added something about Nate Britt, it would still be open.
Now is not the time to discuss killer rabbit control.
/ducks
I brought up Jimmy Carter. Was that too PPB?
Maybe we could only have one LTE? That other thread was just an LTE in disguise.
I started the killer rabbit thread because we had a thread on venomous snakes, a thread on bears, and a thread on alligators. I thought we were missing the real looming threat.
Okay, I just thought folks might get a chuckle by seeing that headline too when juxtaposed against the others.
I also figured it would drop to the second page quickly — its a silly thread. The locking of it is kinda baffling though because it is quintessential off-topic quirk. Maybe in fifty years when they unseal the file, we will know.
And I almost forgot an upthread post: the TP roll goes OVER.
On those occasions where a friend or neighbor offers their generous hospitality, and if I happen to use the facilities and see the TP configured incorrectly, I will take a moment to rectify (hee!) the problem so that the next patron will have a positive feng shui experience. This is one of the small but powerful ways that I try to leave the planet in better shape than I found it.
I have a serious addiction to home renovation/flipping shows. I know they are mostly fake and heavily subsidized but I can't stop watching if one rolls by on the teevee. It's sad.
There, that feels better.
In case you have never seen the pancake bunny
Attachment 7778
I wouldn't call myself addicted, but I watch several of them. Rehab Addict is my favorite. I have also learned that I basically hate "open concept". I want my dining room to be a room, not an area. And I don't want to see my kids all the time. That's what walls are for!!
Tonight I caught a little bit of one called Restoring Salem (as in Witch City). I suspect I will be a regular viewer. Then next summer when we make one of our summertime treks to the North Shore for fried clams, I'll make my husband drive around looking for the houses that have been on the show. ;)
Did I ever remember to tell this thread that last summer's Emoji Movie was way better than it had any right to be? I laughed out loud, several times.
:p :p :p
Could not agree more. I'm not a big fan of constantly being ready to entertain "family and friends" either. That's what caller ID and window blinds are for. Nobody's home!
Oooo, I'm intrigued. Sounds like you are a DIY channel swell; I'm too cheap to pay the extra cable money for that.
I am also very 'over' barn doors. Lame!
I'm the opposite. I grew up in a home that had far too many rooms and doors. I prefer the open design.
I do need a new kitchen, but I also kinda hate the trend of backsplashes. I don't want busy tile over my counters. If we redo the kitchen and I get a backsplash, it will be all white.
UGH!!! BUMMER!
Up early in VA Bch to watch a supply launch headed to the space station from Wallops Island. Literally one minute to launch when a stupid private plane entered the area and launch was scrubbed..
Major disappointment. Can't stay for new launch tomorrow. Rats!!!!
Cold morning.
Warmer this morning than yesterday morning.
Ran a 5k in Grafton, MA this morning, town #30 in the books!
Although as have moves like Jagger, I want to dance like Uma Thurman.
In case y’all are wondering how I am spending my Saturday Night.
Well, that was easy...
Carrot cake baked, filling cooked, ice cream churned and hardening in the freezer. Time to get ready for church.
Not too late to show up, mattman91. Gathering around 5:30. :D
OMG!
https://video.search.yahoo.com/yhs/s...8&action=click
(Not sure what I think but seriously, OMG!)
About 24 hours from now the excitement meter will start pinging for the game against msu. That old magical DUKE BASKETBALL feeling!!!
Have to get my at home fan outfit ready. More relaxed then in person game attire, it features stunning DUKE sweatpants and a very old DUKE shirt.
I just walked through the kitchen and caught movement outside the breakfast nook windows. There's an eastern cottontail out there. I think it's looking at me. Should I be concerned?
Girlfriend's car is totaled, but we are OK.
When my kids were little, I convinced them that monsters were afraid of Mommies. (I also convinced them that I had an invisible third eye on the back of my head.) Eastern cottontails need no convincing. When Mom comes home, they run.
So, matty, you'd better check in here with us today and give an update.
We worry, you know...
We are okay.
Sorry for the delayed update, yesterday was a busy day. A lot more sore the day after, that is for sure. We were at a complete stop when he hit us at about 40-45 mph. We both have some pretty bad whiplash but feeling better than we did yesterday.
Good to hear matty!
Today I saw some pictures of me dancing at a recent wedding. I am trying to get over the shock that I, apparently, dance like a train wreck. I am seriously taken aback at my completely not cool dance moves.
It's time to hang up my watusi. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OU_Ppxgs9Q
My husband and I - many years ago now - went to a wedding in Rye, New York. The reception was held at the same country club where George HW met Barbara for the first time. After we took a spin on the dance floor, an older couple admitted to us that they were copying our moves then asked if we were professional dancers. It's now one of our oft told tales.
My wife and I are frequently remembered as "those people from the wedding that were dancing." I take it as a compliment.
BosDev, the old weezie would have taken your post as a dance-off challenge. Sadly, the chastened weezie will only cede the floor.
To you and Mt Dev belong the twinkle toe accolades. Unless the band starts up, "No Diggity, No Doubt," I am sitting this one out forever.
I'm the guy that just kinda chills at the bar and watches the Cupid Shuffle at weddings.
We have 34 days and 287 more posts to go. We inching up to needing 8 1/2 posts per day.
Mrs. OPK is decidedly against a sister-wife. I asked.
The law is kind of against it also?
My wife has offered to buy me seats on the 50 yard line for some special event they are holding at the Georgia Dome this coming Monday morning at 7:30.
She must love me a lot!
Monday seems like an odd day for that event. I would have thought it would be done on a weekend.
OK, I went and looked up what was going on at the Georgia Dome on Monday at 7:30am.
I'll ask those of you around here who know the building, as I do not - should I be sad?
Aesthetically? No.
Greed-induced obsolescence of a perfectly fine facility because it does not have enough luxury boxes? Yes.
I’ve seen the Peach Bowl a few times there (Duke v. Johnny Football, FSU V. Gamecocks), The Stones, U2, Falcons games, and other events there. ACC Tourney in 2001 too IIRC, maybe some NCAA tourney games (it all gets somewhat hazy). Olympic basketball. Hate to see it go, primarily because it seems unnecessary.
The Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan will be demolished around the 3rd of December. It had a longer shelf life kinda, it has been empty for years. Yes, man has a weird relationship with large building to hold people that dates back millennia.
Does DBR support modern media types these days? Doesn’t look like it, so pretend I inserted an animated gif of Daveed Diggs (Jefferson from “Hamilton”) asking, “What did I miss?”
Although - we would all like to go to a DBR wedding. Know anybody that needs to get married?
I received a summons to post on the LTE.
Not super into Nascar but went to Daytona 500 a few years ago.
Martin Truex, Jr. is very handsome.
Thanks Dale Earnhardt, Jr., you're a pretty cool guy!
Short work week with Thanksgiving Thursday.
What's everyone's favorite Holiday?
Thanksgiving. Nothing close.
Fourth of July for me. Nice weather and grilled food. Hard to beat.
The Winter Solstice.
I'm not actually joking. We have Winter Solstice party every year. It's an open house and we only have dessert. OK, we also have a fruit plate and some cheese and crackers, but everything else is dessert. I bake 5 or 6 myself. The invitation always reads "Yes, you may bring a dessert. No, you don't have to." People who don't bring dessert tend to bring bottles of wine.
You are all welcome to come. The party is on December 22nd this year.
I would go with sad - I just see $$$$$$ going up in dust.
I decided I must have been one of the few that attended Chiefs games to watch the game instead of wandering around and doing other stuff. When they did major remodeling of the stadium, our seats more than doubled in price. I did not renew. At least they didn't totally replace the stadium.
My oldest 2 sons are down visiting their grandparents in Durham for Thanksgiving. They will both be in Cameron tonight!
Have I mentioned that both of my middle 2 sons are applying to colleges this year? Number 3 son is a senior in high school. Number 2 son is applying as a transfer student. Both are giving Duke a shot. Number 3 wants to study classics and historical linguistics. Number 2 is all about economics.
I like the thought of this party ! The Winter Solstice is a good reason to throw a party, especially in the northern latitudes. I always look forward to the beginning of longer days, although it seems to take a long time in late December and into January for the daylight hours to get appreciably longer. It doesn't help that it is in the middle of what can sometimes be a harsh winter in New England.
Our family's first ever Winter Solstice Dessert Open House was either the 12/21 or 12/22 in 2007 - I don't remember if we did a Friday night or a Saturday night that first year. It is either one or two days younger that the LTE. We have through the years found that Friday night works better for us and we have it on the Friday closest to the Winter Solstice unless that Friday is either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Then we have it the weekend before.
It would be but, pains me to say it, but I think William & Mary is a better fit for Number 3. I'll be honest, I'll be more disappointed if he doesn't get into W&M than I will be about Duke. Given what he wants to study, classics AND historical linguistics, it's harder to find schools to apply to. He's only applying to schools that have both classics and linguistics but many linguistics departments focus on the computational part of the field and not the historical (Duke being one of them). The other thing, he's a good student, but he's not a straight A student. Places that have both fields he wants to study tend to have their pick of students. I've told him to throw his hat in every ring, he only has to get into one. I've also told him to wait to fall in love with a school after he finds out where he gets in. Still, he's one of only 1800 or so kids in the whole world who did as well as he did on the AP Latin exam. And he actually wants to keep studying classics. It's going to be interesting to see where he gets in.
I tell him, in a world of kids trying to seem unique, he's the only trombone playing Latin scholar I know. He's already taken a year of Classical Greek as an independent study and a good portion of his essay is about the language he invented, for fun, as a way to play with grammatical structure and syntax.
W&M is a very good school and sounds like it would be a better fit for your son, in terms of what he wants to study. A beautiful campus in a nice location too. Good luck to him. I know the whole college admissions process is somewhat of a crapshoot.
I took 3 years of Latin in high school. I wish I had continued for a longer period of time.
Trader Joe's radio ad pushing "Thanksgiving in a Chip" potato chips flavored to taste like turkey, gravy and dressing.
How do we feel about that? Aside from preferring to eat the meal, of course, has this chip stepped over the line of decency?
I feel horrible that I posted in that thread. 8 posts a day here with a couple extra here and there and we will hit our 20k goal.
Good morning!
(Or should this go on another thread somewhere else?)
And mine doesn't have his license yet. Different strengths.
I've told my son that I'm the perfect mother for a kid who wants to study classics and linguistics because I'm never going to ask him, "What are you going to do with that major?". He responded, "Yeah, but what am I going to do with that major?" We've talked about it and I successfully pointed out that he doesn't work very hard in the classes the don't light a fire in him. I told him, "You love it. Do it." I'm convinced and I've managed to convince him that educated people are employable, even if we don't know what the job will be yet. I don't see him as a financial services type.
I forgot - mainly cause I'm not having to push him - but Oldest Son is applying to graduate school this year too - meteorologic and atmospheric science programs. He's hoping for UCLA. Florida State, Colorado State, and University of Washington are also on the list.
The youngest Turk "Sunshine" just got her license this week. She has absolutely no idea about colleges yet, and this sounds more genuine right now than the typical "I don't know," which really means "go away dad, I got this and I don't want to talk about it right now" response I got from the other young Turks.
I'm going with Thanksgiving, where it's OK to sit around the house and overindulge. In the rust belt, if the weather is nice enough to go outside for a bit of football or a walk in the woods, it's gravy. (ouch).
Mrs. Turk is a Halloween lunatic (double ouch) for no good reason that I can tell.
Here's a holiday "power ranking" column from The Ringer that I found quite entertaining:
https://www.theringer.com/movies/201...moms-christmas
Yea, I'm not really sure it matters what you major in anymore in college. The world and economy are changing so fast that everything is becoming obsolete quite rapidly. Does he know how to use a computer? Perhaps the most important skill. Plus, if he gets stymied by his major in the job market, he can always go to graduate school in something else.
I'm envious of your oldest son. I'm a total weather geek and probably should have been a meteorology major somewhere. That graduate program would be very interesting to me (even though I'm a total non-science person).
Good point - one key attribute for success is how quickly one can pivot to a new area of growth or opportunity (I hate the term "re-invent"). The second one that I've heard that resonates with me is to not specialize or develop expertise in just one area of study. The trick is to find two areas that intersect.
I agree with you about not specializing in just one area. And you have be flexible over the course of your career. I'm convinced the world will look very different 5 or 10 years from now than it does today. Who knows but maybe 10 years from now, being able to program electric, self-driving cars will be a hugely important job skill? I would also advise any young person, no matter where their interests may lie or what they major in, to develop what I might call the "universal" job and personal skills to succeed in whatever they undertake. You have to be ambitious, willing to work hard, responsible, disciplined, organized, have strong verbal and written skills, know how to work with and relate to a variety of people, have integrity, etc. These skills and attributes will never go out of style.
Let's take a poll... That's a good way to pad stats.
How many miles (round trip) are we traveling for Thanksgiving?
292 by pickup truck here.
Just shy of 360. Can I get extra points for the stressed waistband next Monday?
Thanks! About to see new movie "Ladybird," so I'm entrusting my pitiful LTE watch to anybody who is so inclined.
0, unless I decide to play in a poker tournament after Turkey day in Cherokee NC. Then, about 190 or so each way.
I’m very upset. Somehow I missed the Pumpkin Pie POP Tarts this year.
Hmmm, I'm staying home for Thanksgiving but I am getting up early to go run a race at 8am Thanksgiving morning in Andover. If that counts as Thanksgiving travel - 72 miles.
I am impressed and wish you a nice run. It’s gonna be cold in Georgia, gotta think it will be icy where you are.
Good luck. And a happy Turkey Day to all!!!!
May all find peace in the new year, enjoy health and happiness, and may the Sports Gods smile on Duke while frowning mightily on the Cheats!
I just found recipe for egg nog bread. I think I'm going to try it.
1,186 Miles!!!
Gotta go see the Granddaughters in Indiana.
Foggy morning here, really pretty. Leaves finally started coming down in the last week or so.
Everyone asleep but me and the dog.
If I had a Pop Tart, this would be a thing of legends.
Pumpkin spice vs egg nog - which is better?
