Hoping he gets out of the Cone of Shame soon. Glad to hear the prognosis is improving.

Sigh, so close but always the bridesmaid...
Oh, Vandy basketball. Got it. They are the Vandy at UK is the SEC's Clemson at UNC?
Just one of those long days of sighing and eye rolling. Yep.
:D:D:D:D
But, no. That's usually eye sighing and gag lollying.
One of my favorite movie scenes (NSFW or small eyes/ears):

You're right OPK, that will start this day off with a laugh.
I notice there isn't a lot of posting between 2 and 3:30 AM. I wonder why that is?
Looks like I picked a good day to not watch basketball.
I will, however, split infinitives with reckless abandon.
Really feeling just as blank as our team looked right now.
An hour walk and some personal news puts today's game in perspective. I wonder if I should venture on to the EK board or would I just be rubbernecking?
By the way, this could be the year of 6.
Nick Saban won his 6th National Championship.
Tom Brady could get his 6th Super Bowl ring.
Coach K could get his 6th National Championship.
I'm comfortable that we are in a good spot.
The good personal news was earlier in the week. This less favorable news was one of those reminders that time is precious.
Shot out to Jeb who spent church service time clearing and salting entryways from our predicted "dusting" of snow this morning. I don't think 2 inches is a dusting. And a secret scraper cleared my car for me.
MrsPK made chili for the game, may have to break down and have a chili dog. Probably haven’t had a hot dog since the Fourth of July. Somewhat trepidatious though.
Justin Timberlake just SO stole my dance moves.
My personal divestment-from-football project took a big step forward last night. For all of my life, I've watched the Super Bowl with some crew of friends, gorged myself on FOOTBAW FOOD, and engaged in the typical commercial commentary, dissection of the halftime show, etc. The time when I "least watched" the Super Bowl was my freshman year at Duke, when I had it on the TV while I wallowed in bed with the flu.
But last night, I just...didn't watch the Super Bowl. None of my friends had parties and I had no inclination to deal with hosting one. We all spend enough time together that we didn't feel like we needed the occasion as an excuse. My wife and I got Indian takeout and watched nerdy nature documentaries in preparation for this summer's National Park adventure. I didn't check the score, nobody texted me, and then I saw this morning that the Eagles won.
Let me be clear: I'm not trying to be all "Hmm, I enjoyed a nice evening of Beethoven and chianti instead" snobby, but it was freeing to not engage with something I find increasingly culturally toxic, and I don't feel a shred of FOMO even now. I think I will continue to not watch the Super Bowl.
Unless the Lions make the Super Bowl and then all will have to watch to see me on tv. I might have to sell a kidney to get there but...
I wasn't quite at the having a nice chianti and listening to Beethoven stage either, but, I did go to a Sunday matinee of Shakespeare in Love (there's a stage play of the movie now, great fun) followed by a "let's fix what's wrong with Boston theater scene" talk session with friends at the local Caffe Nero. I got home in the middle of the second quarter, checked the score then did other things. My husband and youngest son watched some. They were both pretty much glued to the TV for the 4th Quarter and I went up to watch with them. I saw the Patriots last touchdown but just wasn't interested in watching anymore although I did (mostly) want the Patriots to win. I told them to come get me if it was still exciting with 2 minutes to go. They did. I watched until the end, so, sum it all up and I probably watched about 8 minutes of the thing. I've gone for over 5 years now without watching an entire NFL football game. I find the sport monumentally boring most of the time and when the current Patriots dynasty is over, I won't care at all anymore. Although I'll probably always watch a couple of minutes of the Super Bowl cause I'll still want to know who wins. Three of my four sons do not watch any football. The youngest likes the Super Bowl when the Patriots are in it. He's in middle school, I think they all talk about the Patriots at lunch. It will be interesting to see what happens cause I think the NFL is losing fans in droves, especially younger ones.
Revenge (even if just because someone really, really, really peeved you off, and made nasty comments) is indeed a dish that is best consumed cold.
Oh, how delicious.
I have learned my lesson, not another word about anyone else’s mango compote.
Lol, never you two sweet men. Gentlemen to the core.
No, not here on the old message board either. Just one of those life moments where you congratulate yourself on being better than an over-reacting nincompoop.
Peoplekind is a word?
And the hits just keep coming...
2017 wasn't a great year, 2018 is kind of rough too.
Used to really enjoy the post game threads, but I'm pretty sure it's the same 10 people posting the same 4-5 things after every single game.
*No offense intended*
Anyone else have a bit of a headache this morning?
I am boycotting the UNC games this year, for my own peace of mind more than anything. Had a good night's sleep. My Friday morning is swell.
Without looking, and without having seen anything other than the final score, let me guess about the post-game thread:
1. Duval complaints
2. Defense complaints
3. We should have played X more minutes instead of Y
4. It's over.
5. OAD is an unworkable model
Am I close?
Think it might just be easier to create a thread titled, Why Duke Lost 2017-18 Edition: Rotation was too short, Grayson is hurt/sick, Bagley/Carter didn't get enough touches, Duval is too careless with the ball, Duval cannot shoot, a team of one-and-dones is too inconsistent, free throw shooting, didn't play enough zone, can't guard in man to man.
That should cover everything. Took care of it in a paragraph. No need for all the arguing in post-game threads now.
Well, I for one love the LTE. And while long in the tooth it remains the best thread in which to post.
Arrived home to find an unexpected package in the mail. Nephew Alex sent me socks.Attachment 8064
Nine pounds is great!
What works for me:
1. Write down weight, and whether I exercised for at least half an hour, every day. I use the notebook on my iPhone. That keeps you accountable and you can track progress even when you plateau. I also track body fat % from my scale although electronic impedance is not terribly accurate.
2. Aim for at least five half-hour workouts a week. Cardio and resistance.
3. Try to drink 64 Oz of water every day.
4. No liquid calories besides coffee and skim milk (no soda, beer, juice or wine) except a glass of low-sodium V8 when I wake up.
5. Avoid simple carbs (white bread, white rice, chips, most breakfast cereals). I’m okay with potatoes though.
What is your approach?
As some may know, I live in the city where the Final Four will be this year. I've been remiss in not getting at least a ticket to the festivities. Should I get a ticket or not? Should I get it now or wait?
Dang it, that's kinda what I thought.
FWIW, the last two events I've attended are the 2010 Final Four(Indy while I was living in Cincy) and the 2015 Sweet Sixteen(Houston while living here). So, I guess the real takeaway is shouldn't we all want me there?
I didn't really watch the Carolina game. I checked the score a couple of times, but, I'm making good on my promise that wasn't really a promise, more a realization. The cheating scandal ended the rivalry for me. I can't watch UNC anymore. I always hated the sports teams but was proud that the public university in my native North Carolina had such a stellar academic reputation. They ruined that for me and lost my respect in the process. I hate that about the cheating scandal, but I don't really hate the team anymore, I just don't care. I have no desire to watch them, not even against Duke.
The Harvard Crimson published a letter to the editor this week from a current student today questioning why Harvard has a football team given what we know now about CTE. I'm already on record predicting that the Ivies will give up football within 10 years.
Well, here come Lent.
The usual, no drinking, but also I think some more time swimming laps and trying to make the world a teensy bit easier for someone else by working at the food bank more often. And maybe not sharing my brilliant insights so much? Yeah, no, forget that one.
No one seemed interested in the separate thread I made asking about Austin tips, but folks here might be more forthcoming.
Headed to Austin next week to participate in my best friend's wedding. Have always heard great things about the town and have scheduled myself some extra time. Any ideas are welcomed!
Also, never been a best man before, so those tips are also welcome.
An extra shirt on hold for the groom might come in real handy.
Also, in your toast, don't say anything about former girlfriends the groom might have had and about how much nicer this bride is. Just leave that stuff in the vault. "Nothing but love for" the couple.
As far as Austin, went there for a regional game a few years back. Don't really remember much other that checking out the State House and then a blur of music and food.
I enjoy being helpful! And I'm really not that good at it but it's a skill.
He's a musician and I will be out for a couple of extra days to soak up the local food, drink, and scene. The wedding itself is at the renown Barton Springs, which is the place people seem to agree I shouldn't miss, so that's easy.
The extra shirt is a great tip - thanks. I'm not too concerned about the toast. I have a lot of genuine positive emotion in this situation, and I've never been one to get tight talking before people. Will probably use the plane ride to get some general notes down.
As the best man I feel it is my duty to get fairly tipsy, but I will wait until after I raise my glass to the bride and groom.
Great job, fellas.
I'm down 8 pounds after a late-ish start to my new year fitness/self-improvement project (didn't really get into the gym until around Jan. 15).
I'm following a similar program to OPK's: no alcohol during the week, no candy (that's a more significant deduction than you might think), more general attention to what I eat, and a pretty robust workout program. Going on a month now, I've been doing about 35-40 minutes of resistance training and 20-25 minutes of cardio 4-5 days a week. I've plateaued a little in recent days in terms of weight loss, but am seeing real results in terms of toning and just overall improvement in my physique.
My goals are:
1) Fit into my wedding tux, which is, um, ambitiously sized, owing to the fact that I ran a half marathon in the months before my wedding. My mother is getting remarried in about 3 weeks, and I want to look nice for her.
2) Be prepared for the Highline Loop hike in Glacier National Park this June. It's almost 12 miles, with about 2000 feet of elevation gain, topping out at almost 7300 feet, so I gotta be ready. But I mean, wow:
Attachment 8068
Congrats, and sounds like worthy goals!
I track weight daily, so when I plateau I can still look back and see that I am down X since the beginning. It helps me to maintain the effort even though the immediate results of the day's efforts are not on the scale (and may not be in an appreciable way for a week or more). As you said, you get toner during those periods though. Kinda like a brisket stall at 160 degrees or so -- you know it's getting better even though the needle's not moving or even sliding back a tad.
Congrats to your mom, and send pictures from GNP. On my bucket list, I love Montana.
ETA: given that weight fluctuates throughout the day, and day-to-day depending on water retention, etc., I try not to get too hung up on the day-to-day swings. The point for me is seeing the steady if slow reduction over time. If I am stuck, I look back at where I was that same day three or four weeks ago -- and smile.
I actually started about the same time Wilson did, and I'm taking the same approach as him. No liquid calories, except for a few beers on the weekends. I have paid more attention to what I eat and have been counting calories. I have a treadmill and try jogging at least 2-2.5 miles 4-5 times a week. I have plateaued the last few days so I'll probably try to increase that some. I probably need to also give up some carbs, but that is hard to do for me.
I started at 219 and I'm now down to about 210.5. I'd like to be well under 200 by May for my trip to Budapest.
Oh, and Wilson, I was up in Alberta last May with the intention of going down to Glacier but unfortunately most of the park was still frozen - in late May. Hopefully by June it will be nice and warm!
Similar to me, although I vary cardio with resistance. And am really mindful of simple carbs.
Started 1/1 at 180, down this morning to 165.8. Pretty much my target (164 puts my BMI just under 25; last year I got down to 158 but I don't want to get that low again). But carrying the no beer/wine/spirits through Lent since I already did the hard part of giving them up in the first place six weeks ago.
So how 'bout a fitness thread, for discussion of goals, progress, encouragement, frustration, advice, etc.? Seems like there's easily critical mass for that.
Happy card company holiday #1 of the year.
Just for the record -- my post on another thread about wanting to smack Jeffrey was an inside joke about drummers. In case anyone was wondering.
As was comparing Ringo Starr to Woodrow Wilson.
Gotta be careful around here these days.
I continue to be amazed at how consistently I have typos.
I am an Olympics junkie.
How? How did I miss the team luge relay that debuted in Sochi? Thank goodness I found it this time around. Once every 4 years is really not enough. I need to find more team luge coverage.
It's by country, of course. First down is the female slider. At the bottom, as she crosses the finish line, she hits a target which opens the gate for the male slider who is sitting ready at the top. He hits the button and the 2 man sled goes. (Alas, the 2 woman sled is not included.) Fastest combined time wins, one chance. Nobody missed hitting the target while I was watching but the announcers said it has happened. Target hitting techniques were varied and fun to watch. I loved this so much, I started looking into maybe going to Lake Placid the next time they have a World Cup event. I think I would actually sit in the cold and watch crazy people throw themselves down an icy tube.
I haven't watched the Winter Olympics sińce Apollo Ohno in 2002.
Instead, I guess I'm heading outside to cut down the faded liriope.
I hope I don't hurt the liriope's feelngs but it looks so terrible, it's asking for it.
Signs of life from the Commodores...
Went to a Harvard hockey game tonight and decided mere attendance at a Harvard sporting event was not quite pretentious enough, so, I wore my Oxford University sweatshirt.
The main board is so much more pleasant after a good win.
Funny that.
And we wonder why other fan bases see us as an entitled group?
I would have been discouraged if a win, on the road, against a higher ranked conference opponent who hadn't lost at home all season, while we were missing our top talent was met with anything other than excitement.
Picked up food poisoning Saturday night and didn't get much sleep. Meant to watch the game yesterday but ended up taking a 3 hour nap. Here's to keeping down food today!
I'm wearing black socks with brown shoes today.
I'll confess that one of the great fun aspects of being a wife, girlfriend, significant other, partner (same sex or otherwise) or good pal of any male is to get the chance to gaze at the get up some fellow may be thinking he's looking good in and saving them from fashion catastrophe with a well-timed, "Just what exactly is going on with this outfit?" Followed by, "So you really think that shirt goes well with that pork pie hat?" Or some equally brilliant observation.
And, no, I'm not setting up a straight line for one of you jokers. But I'm sure it's on the way.
Karma is a ...
I tried "the lazy lumberjack" once, but the splinters have prevented a revisit.
Favorite airport, everyone?
I can name my least favorite without hesitation..
Worst big airport: Atlanta (although LaGuardia, Kennedy, and LAX are awful too. O'Hare not that bad the few times I've done it)
Worst small airport: Jackson Hole, WY
Favorite: Minneapolis.
Second Favorite: Columbia, SC
Most chill: Spokane, WA
Least Favorites: Newark, O'Hare, Toronto (counts as the US, right?), Fort Lauderdale.
Favorites: Denver, Indianapolis (I'm biased :) ), Minneapolis
I don't mind Atlanta or JFK. Never flown in/out of LAX. I've been through some GREAT international airports.
Smallest airport I've been in? Charlotteown, Canada. One gate.
Virtue and Moir won the Ice Dancing gold medal. The US women are once again facing Canada in the women's hockey gold medal game. And I'm reminded of how we lost colchar as a member of our merry little band. (It was mostly my fault. Davis and White were better in 2014 and I told him so. Then I said that when 80% of the Canadian women's hockey team trains at US universities on scholarship - what does it really mean to skate for Canada?)
I know it's petty of me, but it just bugs me that our students are facing such incredible student loan debt but we've got money to train Canadian hockey players. And then they beat us in the Olympics. (If you've been paying attention for the last few years, you know that my support for college athletics took a blow when I started having to write tuition checks.)
Oh there's only one woman on the Canadian team this year that didn't play college hockey in the US. But there are a lot more that are currently in the CWHL so it doesn't feel quite so much like we're all paying to train them to beat us.
I'm about to book a flight to Budapest but most flights (that are in my price range) have me connecting in Istanbul. How is that supposed to work? Isn't all travel to Turkey on hold at the moment for all US Citizens? Does that not apply for people simply catching a connecting flight?
Maybe that explains the price?
I might be too old for Austin.
I disagree with the ladies figure skating results from last night.
1) Medvedeva
2) Osmond
3) Miyahara
4) Zagitova
If the only thing that's going to matter in the Olympics is landing a triple lutz - triple loop combination after 2 minutes of skating around, just call it Figure Skating Big Air. In fact, to avoid the plethora of injuries that befall these little jumping beans, just limit to a best trick format. Go out, do your triple lutz - triple loop and nothing else. Why have any actual skating matter? Granted Zagitova can skate fairly well but her spins were not as good as any of the other top ladies and her Biellmann should have gotten a negative GOE.
Since 1994, only one gold medal winner ever competed in another Olympics, Yuna Kim who won in 2010 and came back to take silver in 2014. Shizuka Arakawa won at age 25 in 2006. The rest were teenagers who never won another World or Olympic medal and were washed out of the sport by age 18. We should bring back school figures.
OK - I went back and watched Zagitova's program again and her spins were better than I remembered but still not as good as the others in the top 4. Slow wanker Biellmann spins are a personal pet peeve and I hate watching everybody do that move. I wish it got negative GOEs when the skaters don't do them well. Zagitova's is average. So is Medvedeva's to be honest, but her program was an actual program and not a best trick showcase, so I'll forgive her more.
Thank you. I liked Medvedeva more than Zagitova but don't really have enough knowledge to judge. I am tired of the Biellmann and wouldn't care if it was never done again.
Does Osmond rotate her jumps in the opposite direction than most other skaters? That kept throwing me. I loved her routine and her reactions.
I'm catching up on "Counterpart" tonight.
Kinda not so into the OlyOlyOlys this go around but I'm glad others here are enjoying it.
She does. She's a "lefty" spinner. So is Carolina Kostner. (I like Kostner but, how she keeps getting placed so high is beyond me. No, her program components are not that much better than the other skaters who don't do the hardest jumps. Can NOT explain it.)
Just as long as she doesn't stop short...
Yay, yet another Seinfeld reference.
Slow Sunday here in Final Four town. I still haven't committed to a ticket yet. I did however spend 5 hours outside working on the yard in low 70s weather.
^^^ I hope it will be all pretty and stuff for Cousin weezie and the gang at the end of March. I'd like a chair in the dappled shade please.
Assuming I don't miss my early flight tomorrow morning, I appear to have survived this long weekend in Austin for the wedding of my best friend.
But it wasn't always a sure bet.
Notes to Self: Don't book 6am flights unless you have no choice
*yawn*
I dislike DFW, it didn't get much mention earlier.
*I will not open the post-game thread.*

I opened the post-game thread. :(
I have a headache.
I took a three hour nap yesterday and then slept nine hours last night. I have almost recovered from Austin.
I bought Pop Tarts. Strawberry Frosted...
Blasphemy.

Since I know you are all very interested in my third son's college application process, he has been accepted to both the University of Vermont and the University of Massachusetts - Amherst. That's 2 down and 9 more yet to go. UMass wins that head to head battle, btw.
Thank you.
There are schools he hasn't heard from yet that would definitely beat UMass in head to head competition, but if it's only UMass and UVM he has to choose from, it's UMass. UMass has courses in Sanskrit and Old English, Vermont doesn't. But we'll probably drive up to Burlington on accepted students day anyway. I hear it's beautiful and I'd like to see it.
Dealing with Buncombe County's finest this morning. Not enough caffeine...
Congrats to son of BosDev! No matter what comes now, BosDev can look forward to huge mountains of toxic, son-produced laundry at Thanksgiving and Christmas. My eyes water at the thought. Literally, water.
I feel better today. The precious thought of holelian nation crying their huge heads to sleep on their tiny pillows has soothed my fevered brow.
In true sincerity, and with most malevolent intent, I sentence them to the ninth and darkest pit of hell, those cheating, lying holes.
I had a roommate at Duke who considered minoring in Olde English - we had shelves full of his empty 40 bottles...
Congratulations! Both are excellent schools. We have a friend who teaches at Vermont and loves it there. And I have heard great things about UMass.
Unless he gets into Duke. Mother of BostonDevil did her grandson's laundry every week for 4 years. The price? He had to go eat lunch with his grandparents after church on Sundays - or sometimes dinner on Saturday night. They paid. He didn't mind. Then they gave him a car for graduation for being such an attentive grandson. (Nice work if you can get it.)
Major congratulations jk! Isn't it one of the most wonderful moments in a child's life?!! You deserve to be very proud.
DaughterPK on cusp of a college decision, too. Exciting times. Currently looking like a lean towards Roll Tide.
