Just posting to do my part in gaining ground. Hope everyone is having a good Monday.
Hmm, sounds like a job for Little Bunny Fufu.
Okay, so I know LBF went after field mice which aren't in the same family as moles (at least not that I could find in my limited research on the subject), but maybe if LBF had a field of moles to haunt it might solve DA's and DMLA's problems.
Arggghhh... I just tried, but the pix aren't on the interweb tubes, they're on my computer. Is there some place I can park the pictures and then upload them?
But you can see him on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoqSpcABM_Y
on the memorable day when we went to the petting zoo. That pig was very entertaining to him. He liked it a lot better than the innocent-looking yet carnivorous pony that tried to eat his feet.
It's interesting that often celebs can make such bad choices about treatment. The Shah or Iran, Castro, Superman, Tiger Woods are ones that come quickly to mind. Kennedy seems to making good choices though. For all the talk abut patient centered health treatment it assumes that patients make good choices and celebs are very used to having things their way.
I wouldn't even want to start trying to list the number of celebrities who have made bad decisions when it comes to hip surgery. K might be among them if he got a small head, plastic cup total hip replacement -- referred to as the "gold standard" by many orthopods in the U.S. because they don't want to learn new procedures. If he did, he doesn't play racquetball or tennis anymore. Anybody know if he does?
Gaining a little more ground on BB...but he could just be coasting.
That's a bit much, I think.
The radio sports shows made a few good points about this - first of all, the world extreme cagefighting (I think that is this league) is like the AAA to UFC's Major league. The UFC fights allow people to go a little farther because the fighters have enough control, stamina and skill to not accidentally cause sever damage. These fighters don't have that much skill.
Also, the British guy should not have been in the cage with his ear like that - either get it treated before the fight (cut it, drain it, do something) or drop. That felt like gratuitous gore waiting to happen - just what people criticize MMA for.
All in all, I hope they put some decent fights on network TV, with fighters known for skill instead of back story. And, for future reference, the title fight should be the top of the card.
Radiation is not very sexy or great PR fairly or unfairly brain surgery seems to really capture the public's imagination. Kinda of you go to Duke to get the tough stuff done than go back to Harvard to get the routine easy stuff. For so many of the Harvard people who think that Cambridge is the center of the medical universe, heck the center of the educated universe I know this must pain them greatly. It is thought the intelligent way to look at diseases, no one medical school or system has all the best people though a lot of people think Mayo Clinic, or Johns Hopkins or Harvard is magic
Field mice may be wilier than your average suburban mole, so if LBF could catch and bop the mice, then the moles should be no problem. I just wondering if "bopping" serves as enough intimidation to leave my yard and move on to the neighbor's.
(I hope, some day in the distant future, some poor grad student stumbles upon this bizarre set of messages that is the LTE, in some outdated web archive cache somewhere, and has to try to make sense of it. Would they group messages by topic? Come up with a list of abbreviations generated here? It would be quite the dataset for some random study, that's for sure.)
It appears he's come through the surgery okay. AP is reporting that he told his wife, "I feel like a million bucks; think I'll do it again tomorrow."
He also was awake for the procedure... ewww.
Best wishes for a good outcome for the Senator.
I'm giving up being Doug Kistler for this post (756 if I ever catch up with 'Whatever') which is kind of hard. I dated Doug Kistler's son in high school. Yes, he broke my heart, but I still have fond memories of him. A little heartbreak at 15 is good for you.
This is still all in an effort to catch bb. Where are you going, by the way? Or are you just going to be working too hard?
I just found my bf from when I was 15, on Facebook. No heartbreak (iirc, it was a mutual break-up,... then he moved on to my best friend ), but definite fond memories on the whole.
First heartbreak was in 7th grade, when the 9th grader I liked (and had my first kiss with!) moved out of town.
Nice article in the Globe today about Duke and the surgeon who performed the procedure yesterday..

That match was pretty weak IMO and I think Kimbo Slice will get absolutely crushed by any of the top UFC guys. Im glad to see the networks finally getting on board and showing some MMA stuff, but Slice is overrated, and Elite is pinning all their hopes on a guy who proved the other night that he can be challenged by even a mediocre MMA fighter, and I'd love to see him against even someone like St Pierre, even though I don't think they are in the same weight class obviously, I still think Slice would get 'killed' in an UFC event.
i guess he'll be getting this too unless it's gone out of vogue:
http://www.gliadel.com/
I've never found an ex and don't remember trying to look (drunk searches don't count). When I was nineteen or twenty I did look for a classmate from 3rd grade that used to torture me and generally make my life miserable. I wrote her a letter that ended something like: "P.S. I saw you eat a booger in art class when you were talking to 'so and so'. If you are not the intended recipient of this e-mail, please ignore and carry on." I sent it to about half a dozen people and got delightful responses from all but one.
I facebooked some old classmates and the ironic thing was that every single page looked exactly the way it you'd imagine it would have looked 10 years ago. Wanna-be player boy has pix of him frenching like, 10 different girls. Drunken-antics girl has pictures of, well, drunken antics. This guy who was always very high-achieving, but very insecure about himself has all these obviously studio-done pictures of himself and his new wife looking all melty and lovey-dovey cutesy. He also listed his income as "over $250,000"... I mean, who does that??) People really don't change. (well, except for one girl who has apparently become a lesbian since I knew her, but whatever)
Couldn't find Old High School Boyfriend though. He's probably been divorced 2 or 3 times because he kept putting relationships "on the back burner" and doesn't have time for facebook. :D
No time for FB or MySp...have to post in the longest thread ever. Catch up to BB, yada yada yada.
I don't do Facebook or MySpace. I only post here and on Ravelry (it's a knitting thing.) Should I? Join MySpace, I mean. Somehow I think I'd just be a sad old loser if I went on Facebook, right?
I should add that I don't know how to upload pictures, so the sad, old comment really isn't that far off. Anybody want to teach me how to upload pictures. At some point I'm going to have to have an Avatar, I think.
Social networking sites are what you make of them. If you think you could find some old friends, then go for it. As much as I've knocked it in the past, I've also reconnected with a lot of old friends and it helps keep in touch with my friends on the east coast.
Sure. Hit me up.
according to the n&o today, sounds like a few days at Duke and then back to Bahston for radiation and/or chemotherapy. makes sense.
Not at all. I've enjoyed getting back in touch with a bunch of sorority sisters; high school friends; old work colleagues, etc. I'm a member of the facebook group, "Duke alumni who are probably to old to be on Facebook" as well. I did LinkedIn first, but that doesn't have any real interactivity or stickiness. MySpace is just scary, IMO.
By my reckoning, I've picked up 12 posts against the LTE in the last 6 days. Guess my claims of slowing down due to work were a bit overblown.
Technically, your June 2 response to Ymo suggested that you'd have a month of work/being busy. That leaves me to wonder:
1) You OK?
2) You had the quickest month (two days) on record.;)
3) The above quoted stat suggests that you PW'd a bit PRIOR to June 2.:o
You're also forgetting the obvious reason. Starting June 3, it's opilio crab season on the Discovery Channel.:D
Cheers,
Lavabe
Now I can't stop thinking about that song which referenced the Discovery Channel...ugh, I hate that song.
I've never Facebooked an old classmate but have been Facebooked (is that a word now?!?) by many. Some I have added as friends, others I have ignored. But I generally wonder why so many people try to reconnect so many years later? If we weren't close enough to stay in touch why would we want to reconnect now?
And, out of curiosity, I wonder how many DBR posters are on Facebook? Talk about jacking up our friend count if we were all to add each other!!! Or maybe someone should create a DBR page on Facebook?
These crazy scientists fed mice 100 bottles of wine a day and found out they live longer. Well, actually, it was the chemical equivalent of 100 bottles for a human. But then after further study concluded that four five ounce glasses would produce the desired effect on humans: increased longevity.
So, my question du jour, are there any good, cheap, organic wines? Like a table wine, something you drink everyday and don't go broke.
This thread has been dead for three hours now. Seriously?
I would have posted but after reading Fish80's question about wine, I headed to the liquor store instead. :D
Sometimes, work just gets in the way of fun. I keep looking for an ad offering a job that pays lots for doing little, but I haven't found it yet. A job of Princess would also work.
Yes, there was.
"Do you have Prince Albert in a can?" Uhhh, yes? Well, you better let him out! Or something like that. My mother told me that years ago. There was also the one about the running refrigerator. Classic!
Did anyone else notice that if you click on the number of replies on the board it shows in a separate window who has posted and how many time?
Just found it and I'm sad to say that I am in the top 15 in this thread. Maybe leaving for Britain Sunday will be a good thing as it will drastically reduce my posting opportunities.
Devildeac owns the Ymm, Beer thread. 300+ posts out of 700...
Oh cool. I'm in second place. That seems fitting. What amazes me is that Ozzie's only been here once, somehow I thought he'd been around here more than that.
I'm about where I expected to be... but surprised Wilson's right behind me. Where's he been lately?
Is it just me, or are the DBR pages slow to load tonight? I click a link, get a blank black background, wait 10-20 sec., and finally, the rest of the page comes up.
Oh I'm definitely taking my laptop as I use it for research. And they have really cheap wireless where I am staying. But, being in London, the absolute last thing I want to be doing with my time is spending it here. Now, if I find a pub with a decent patio and wireless access that'll be a different story (maybe I'll be able to liveblog the happenings in Covent Garden for all of you).
Sure. You buy the beer and I'll provide the place to crash. In fact, anyone from the DBR community is welcome to join me.
Thanks, so do I. From what I've heard the weather has been great lately so I hope the rain doesn't follow me from here.Quote:
Hope you have a fabulous time.
For the first few days I'll be staying with a cousin in Gourock Scotland (pictured below...her house looks out over the water...my apologies for it not being the clearest photo ever taken).
http://www.gourockbaptistchurch.co.u...0feathered.jpg
After that I'll head down to Ayr Scotland where I lived as a kid (pictured below) to visit family.
http://www.ayr.org/photogalleries/ay...ndbrig1024.jpg
This has links (on the left) to some decent panoramic views of Ayr.
Then I head down to London Towne (although there will be trips up home to Scotland thrown in every couple of weeks).
I was going to make some witty comparison between the Boston area and jolly ole England, but they escape me at the moment. My grandmother was a full MacPherson...when I was younger I always wondered if that would be some angle to meet Elle.
Hey colchar, bring me back some yarn?
Going back, like, a week to the critter problems faced by the DBR community, y'all would appreciate this article: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/05/ga...l?pagewanted=1
My favorite quotes from it are the guy who ate the woodchucks that plagued him because he felt bad about killing them, and the following quote from a homeowner with a carpenter bee problem: “You can’t sit outside — the carpenter bees come over to see what you’re eating,” he says. “They don’t land on you, it’s not like menacing, it’s like having small children that aren’t yours. You just want them gone. There’s no other way to do it, and I feel very badly about it. I don’t know why they keep coming back. You’d think they’d talk to each other about what happened last year.”
Yarn? I admit to being able to sew (by hand, not by machine) but I suspect I'd make a mistake of some sort and get you the wrong stuff. If you really need some from there though let me know and I'll see what I can do as I doubt it would add anything to the wieght of my luggage.
For some inexplicable reason I'm my DBR pages are bigger than the screen today. I have to scroll to the right to see the right edge. Usually, it fits on the screen. I've tried playing with the size of the window, but to no avail. And I'm not even using Vista on this machine, it's Windows XP Professional.
At home I have Vista on the host machine and it's causing lots of printer connectivity problems with the other machines on the home network. Maybe I should cross over to the MAC side.
That's probably my fault because of the photos I posted earlier in this thread (the page before this one). I'm betting you aren't having the same problem in other threads or even on other pages of this thread.
My apologies but I'm new to posting photos here and haven't quite got it down pat just yet.
Well, really the request was tongue and cheek. Someday I will travel to Scotland with one empty suitcase which I will bring back filled with yarn. Or maybe I'll just move there, either Scotland or New Zealand where the sheep outnumber the people.
Until then, colchar, if it says Jamieson's or shetland wool anywhere on the label, you're good. There's a Jamieson's and a Jamieson & Smith's but they both do say Jamieson's on the label. (I'm kidding -- on the square -- cause if you do bring me back some yarn, I will take it.)
Need yarn? Need is a variable term when it comes to knitters and yarn. I probably don't actually need to buy yarn for at least 10 years. That's not going to stop me though.
Weird, I was Danny Ferry at 2155 this morning, then just posted again a moment ago, and became... Danny Ferry at 2155. Where are the mods trimming threads, I wonder? (And I didn't get a warning or anything.. how do I find what caused the deletion?)
Yes, Lavabe and I are actually employed by YHOO, DA. So, anything we can do to protect JY we will do. Your hired gun, Carl Icahn, and his buddies are just a bunch of meanies. If they show up, we leave... :)
I think it's funny how the Icahn lawsuit is making Yang look like a petulant little kid -- "If Microsoft buys us, we'll take our engineers and go home." The revelation that he turned down a $40/share offer will be a nice piece of evidence for the trial.
But you can't fool me, Ymo, I *know* you work for The Sheinhart Wig company.
I just counted them up, there are 76 unique posters to this thread.
Also, I'm ahead of billy in something, hooray!
Let's try and get the number of unique posters up to 100. OK, lurkers, if you've been reading without contributing to the beast that is the LTE, now's the time, help us catch bb!
Oh, just thought I'd mention, I'm taking the whole crew down to Durham tomorrow for my parents' 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration.
I got two new dresses last night. I've heard conflicting reports on how dressy the occasion will be so I bought a killer dress in Duke blue, well close enough, and another one that's a bit more casual in a pinky/peachy plaid. There's nothing like trying a bunch of dresses that make you feel fat and inadequate only to discover the one that says, it's not you, it's the ill-fitting clothes.
Uh-oh, BD's out of town for the weekend -- our BB-beating crew is signficantly shorthanded! :(
On an unrelated note -- filled up yesterday with gas from Costco (cheapest around), it was $4.09/gal. Man, complaining about $2.75/gal seems soooo long ago.
I was out of town for a conference this week and am just now getting caught up. Yes, I have a compulsive need to read all posts on this thread. Colchar, have fun across the pond!
How close are we to being caught up with BB?
1. Reading the entire thread is not that unreasonable (ok, maybe it is-wink), but the thought of the thread ever catching up to BB is certainly not reality-based (sad and embarrassed faces here).
2. Ooh, look, no you're not (wink).
(written smilies used 'cuz you used up the gosh-darned limit with your reply-wink again)
daj
I think it all depends on core beliefs that were programmed in to you as a child.
I mean, who was that girl that played a lot of golf ih the 40s? Hepburn? She was awesome.
But for my money, Lauren Bacall gets the award for "Most Beautiful Celebrity O' the 40s." Let's face it folks, be you left, rigtht, libertarian or Venacalulite, you just GOTTA vote again!
-
I think EJ and BB are up and posting at a strangely late hour, considering it's a Sat. night. What do Hurley and Mrs. BB think about this behavior?
(I'm currently helping Mr. DA roam through Liberty City... darn, GTAIV is hilarious.)
My Xbox 360 finally arrived...wondering if I should get GTAIV.
Yes, Hello! that ad is extremely annoying. Which means it must be doing its job...
My wife is napping now so I can go wild on line. :D
Earlier this afternoon, my beagle brought a raccoon leg into the house, compliments of the foxes. For some reason this got me in great trouble. Like it's all my fault.
The latest animal news from the fish zoo is snake skin. My resident garter snake shed it's skin all in one long piece, a very nice specimen. Maybe I should mail this to my nephews, or maybe mail it to Lavabe.
Should I take a poll?
My cats eat bugs...I guess that is better than kids eating bugs?
After what turned out to be a rather enjoyable flight I'm now in Scotland sitting in my cousin's living room looking out over the bay pictured above. Despite the clouds that are rolling through and that are threatening some heavy rain, the view is absolutely stunning. The photo posted here simply doesn't do it justice.
I'll post some of my own photos when I get the chance.
*Just thought I'd check in and attempt to keep my post count up.
Wow. I hope you have tons of fun and take lots of pictures. This is where I used to live in Dunoon. :)
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c9...18/dunoon1.jpg
Alison's is directly across the water from Kilcreggan so, knowing the area, I'm sure you can picture the view I've had all day (despite the clouds coming in over Holy Loch).
I'm looking across at the lights of Dunoon right now - one of them likely being from your old place.
Color me officially jealous, Colchar. I spent a semester in Glasgow, had the best consecutive 4 months of my life. Didn't have quite that view, but did have a nice, 3rd floor room on HillHead street (highest point around the Uni), so had a decent view to the City Centre.
Luckily, Seattle weather keeps reminding me of those days...
Strangely enough, the cousin I am staying with will be in Seattle next month.
And I'll probably be visiting some of your old favourites in Glasgow tomorrow as I plan to head into the city for the day (providing, of course, that the rain holds off). George Square here I come!!!
Hey, bb, I know you're reading. Check out the newest post on the "ymm, beer" thread:o:D
Actually, I've been enjoying the bottle of Gobson's Sterling that I bought at Duty Free on my way over. That, combined with the stunning view, made for an extremely enjoyable day yesterday. Extremely enjoyable.
Quote:
How about any Scotch ales:D?
I'll get into those today. I had planned to go into Glasgow but it is cloudy, windy, and cold so I doubt I am going to bother. Therefore, needing something to do for the day, I think I'm going to head off to a pub around lunchtime. Some Tennent's Shilling and some McEwan's Shilling are definitely in my future!
Grab your brother and get on a plane!! We can have a DBR party right here in Scotland.
If the wind settles down a bit tomorrow I might take the ferry over to Dunoon. It's a little cold today (I'm looking out the window watching the ferry cross right now and trust me, it looks darned cold out there!) so I'll hunker down in a pub for the afternoon but tomorrow is supposed to be nicer so, if I don't go into Glasgow (as I had intended to do today), I'll definitely head over the water to Dunoon.
Thanks for the info regarding the Western Rat Snake to rid me (...well, not me, but my property) of gophers. I will investigate how to purchase one, or two, or three. (Do they also kill rattlers? Apparently the rattler venom here has gotten more toxic in the past two years).
...I was going to add another comment, but in keeping with 'the longest thread ever' will add another post.
I'm thinkin' that this entire thread should be placed in a time capsule and buried in K'Ville. Perhaps some graduate student could base a thesis on it.
I'd like to post at least a couple of photos but am not sure how to post photos directly from my computer. Can that be done (if so, can someone explain how?) or do I need to put them online first? If they have to go online first I guess I can just add them to my Facebook page and insert that url.
I can't help you with the photo question colchar but add me to the list of the officially jealous. We are going to Scotland next month but being a bit pressed for time we are skipping Glasgow this time. Pity - it's one of my favorite cities. We decided to spend more time out in the boonies than in the cities for my son's first ever trip outside of the US.
I will watch this space for photos.
I'm surprised no one's mentioned this site yet on DBR OT or PPB:
http://www.youvebeenleftbehind.com/
Just for Colchar's benefit, I'm adding their "Why" you should subscribe to their service:Quote:
[it's your] one last chance to bring them to Christ and snatch them from the flames!
Good Lord, that is the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. If the rapture does indeed occur, how would the computers know it? Also, if all the people running this site are the fine, upstanding Christian believers that they obviously must be to provide this service to the world (note the sarcasm), wouldn't they be raptured as well? Who's going to send the e-mails? Do they have a Staff Atheist on call for such an occasion?
I'm guessing someone there pushes a button every day to let the servers know that God's favorite children still walk the Earth. If no one hits that button for 6 days, the servers fire off all those gloating e-mails to Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, and gays.
It's sorta like the hatch in Lost, but (and I didn't think this was possible) less cool.
On "Wait, wait," they had a clip with one of the heads of the site. Apparently, the mods there report every three days. If you receive no message for 3 days, you know the Rapture has occurred.
Imagine if we heard nothing from the DBR mods for three days. I wonder what that would mean?;)
Cheers,
Lavabe
Yeah, I heard it on Wait, Wait as well. (I *Love* that show.)
Frankly, if I'm paying money on a service entirely dependent on other people getting "Raptured" (they have to disappear for the mail service to fire), I sure want to know more about those people. I mean, what certainties do they have in place that their key people will be the ones to go? What if only 2 go, b/c the third sinned unrepentantly the day before?
So yeah, I'm disappointed I didn't see any bios. I want to know whose fingers will *not* be on the trigger, if you know what I mean.
I forget where on the podcast it appeared, but you could download the NPR podcast for "Wait, wait." It sure seems real.
Try this link:
http://www.npr.org/templates/rundown...n.php?prgId=35
Go to 1:00 into the game "Bluff the Listener." The clip with the website owner is at 6:10 into the game.
Cheers,
Lavabe
I think we need a little explaining from one of the PPB experts on this sort of thing.
Of course, maybe this is DA's plot to bring in more people into the LTE. Posters come in, but never get out.
Now if we are REALLY talking about rapture, I think about the man from Mars who stopped eating cars and eating bars, and now he only eats guitars.
Man... I can't believe I recalled that Blondie lyric.
Cheers,
Lavabe
Apparently, I've been living under here http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/c..._Afternoon.jpg because I haven't the faintest idea what everyone is talking about...
Taken from someone's Picasa web album from their trip to Peru. Hey it came up when I searched house under a rock
Another one for Colchar, since this news may not have made it across the pond -- (though it did hit Colbert tonight):
Will the theme song, "Hockey Night for Canada" no longer be licensed for television?? Oh no, the national tragedy!
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/s...oryId=91252456
Uh-oh, looks like rival network, CTV, has acquired the rights since CBC didn't pick it up:
http://ca.reuters.com/article/domest...47363920080609
(Really, can you imagine the fuss for the MNF theme? I doubt it'd make the floor of our parliament...)
Yeah I know all about that because the issue blew up before I left (I also read the Toronto Star every morning and am still doing that here).
Trust me, this is a huge issue. That theme song is sometimes called "Canada's second National Anthem" but that isn't accurate. It is our first National Anthem!! I would wager that more people recognize that song, and can do so far more quickly, than they do our official National Anthem.
The CBC were idiots in dealing with this issue (there is a separate lawsuit over them giving it out to cell phone companies as ring tones that played a huge role in their decision...although the flatly deny that that is the case).
And hockey is so much a part of Canada's national identity and culture that it comes as no surprise to me how big of a story this is. Heck, it certainly isn't the first time that a hockey issue has been discussed in Parliament. And it certainly won't be the last. Seriously, not being from Canada, people here at DBR simply cannot grasp how huge hockey is in Canada. You'd have to live in Canada for a little while before it could really sink in how seriously we take our hockey.
ETA: A friend of mine started a Facebook group (there are several of them) in order to ask people to sign a petition to reverse their decision. I was the second person to join the group and, within a day or tow, it had thousands of members. The group currently has over 5000 members and, as I said, it is only one of several groups devoted to the same topic.
Have we finally run out of things to talk about in this thread? Am I forever to be known as the person who made the last post here and, in doing so, killed the thread?
I was looking for an ESPY clip of Bill Murray accepting MJ's award one year, and then I stumbled upon Jimmy V's speech. I made everyone in the office watch it, they all cried. Time to drink.
After a few hot and steamy days, this morning was perfect: cool and crisp, with a light breeze and strong morning sun. Feeling very zen deep into my morning run, my heightened senses noticed a large ripple in the pond. I paused to reflect, and a beaver poked his head above the water, gave me a look and then slapped his beaver tail and swam away. A beautiful moment frozen in time.
I am jealous. It's hot here in Durham, though cooler than it has been the last week. And, I can smell the smoke from the wildfires in eastern NC. Now, I have a better understanding of what Californians and others go through as regards wild fires. I get it baby, I get it.
Makers of "the Chosen beer," He'Brew::D

Whoops ... mixing in the Ymmm Beer thread!:D

As long as this thread doesn't hit the second page, I consider it very active. Has it ever gone past the second page? I don't think so.
Hi, I'm back, my parents have been feted. It was a very nice event. Former dean Bill Griffiths was there along with several retired math professors, Joe Kitchen, Lang Moore, Dick Hodel, and a couple of current profs, Dalene Stengl, just in case anybody took courses with them through the years. My dad is a former prof as well, Don Burdick of statistics fame. Anybody suffer through Math 117 with him? If you suffered, it wasn't because of the professor, even if he weren't my dad, I'd have to put him in 'one of the nicest guys ever' category.
In theater news, just got into a festival in West Chesterfield, NH in the fall. Looks like I'll have to take a leaf peeping road trip. It's my first non-Boston area production!
I had Margaret Hodel, Dick's wife I believe, for Calc 33 & 34. I had Joe Battle for both probability and statistics - business department, not math. I wasn't overly impressed with his teaching and he gave his exams at night so both sections took at the same time. He was at least nice enough to reschedule if you asked early so that the test wouldn't be at the same time as a basketball game.
Congratulations on your acceptance to the festival in NH.
Never took Stats as an undergrad but was able to bust the curve 1st mod in B-school...
Okay, a little guilty admission here -- I love Disney music. Have ever since I got my first copy of Mary Poppins on vinyl. So, why am I up at nearly 1AM, confessing this to you, the LTE audience?
Because I stumbled across this: http://www.coveringthemouse.com
A site dedicated to artist remakes of Disney music. And I've been browsing/listening to it for the past hour. Help me!
It didn't hurt that the second-most-recent post is a Bonnie Raitt cover of Dumbo's "Baby Mine," one of my all-time favorites.
The Squirrel Nut Zipper's take on "Under the Sea" from Little Mermaid isn't bad either.
If you click in, they have the songs streaming from the site.
What was that group rate for psychiatric treatment, again? :o
Do you still have the vinyl? Is it in good shape?
I still have most of my vinyl from the mid-70's. Not sure if its worth much and I can't listen to it because I have nothing to listen to it with. My parents copied all their vinyl to reel to reel tapes and then cassette. They still use the cassettes.
I used to love Disney movies (and songs) but I cannot for the life of me understand why my mother let me watch "Dumbo." Or, for that matter, why Disney made it. It's scary!! Dumbo gets taken away from his mommy, there's that whole trippy Dumbo gets drunk scene, everybody is mean to him... it is just not a children's movie.
Favorite line from "Under the Sea": "Each little clam here know how to jam here, under the sea!"
Speaking of Disney . . .
Giraffe meat is now kosher.
I've eaten Ostrich, but I don't recall eating Emu. I imagine the taste of Emu is similar to that of Ostrich.
I am just kidding about my neighbor's cat. I would not eat it intentionally (leaving open the possibility that unbeknown to me the cat ends up in Chinese food). :D But the cat annoys me: always sneaking around my property, trying to kill birds.
I haven't gotten beyond the smallest kernel of an idea with that one. I'm not prolific. I've been working on a play set in a Starbucks for what seems like forever because I know how it starts and I know how it ends, but that 'and then a miracle occurs' middle part just hasn't happened yet. That said, I wrote the Duke-UNC eHarmony date one in one sitting. Had a couple of people read it, revised it once, and sent it out. Of course, that one didn't get selected by the festival, so maybe that's telling me something. DBR readers would have LOVED it though.
The play that did get accepted this time around is called Cloud 7. Have I mentioned it before? Tagline: It's not Cloud 9, but it's close.
Hey, Durham area DBR posters, I'll be attending the 10X10 in the Triangle festival on July 12th this year. Yeah, they didn't take my play, losers, but I still know more than one of the playwrights on the bill and I'm supporting their work. Just in case anyone wants to meet me there. (And Tilly, she's coming too.) The theater is in Carrboro. Here's the website, http://www.artscenterlive.org
Ooooo, Jeff Mullins, I suddenly have the urge to buy a car.
I have actually tried opossum, raccoon, squirrel, snake, turtle, and frog legs. I wasn't particularly impressed with the first two - stringy and greasy, as I recall. Squirrel can be okay, depending on how it's fixed. Snake, blech. Someone once brought fried snapping turtle to our community potluck supper under the guise of fried chicken. Most people there thought it was the best fried chicken they had ever tasted - until they found out they had eaten turtle. Frog legs are actually quite good - and they really do taste a whole lot like fried chicken.
He always eats stuff raw...yech. But then I'm not the one jumping out of planes onto remote Pacific islands.
