FWIW, my father's family's religion was Buddhism.
I ran another 5k today. I have now run in 27 different towns in Masschusetts.
Today was the Forge Pond 5k in Hanover. Only 324 to go!
1620 kilometers is a bit of run. Particularly for one day. Ultramarathoning has never crossed my mind. A marathon on the other hand...
Do it! I have to think you'll be glad you did. Each time I have made that final turn (Right on Hereford, Left on Boylston) on Boylston the feeling has been overwhelming. I have never felt more proud of myself than that last 2/10ths of a mile of the Boston Marathon. If I could share that feeling with the world, I would.
Also - I'm not going to finish the challenge until I'm at least 80. ;)
There were only about 150 people participating in the race today. I emailed the race director ahead of time because part of it was on a trail and I'm wary of two many tree roots and I wanted to know how much of a problem they might be. Anyway, I also told him about my crazy goal, run a 5k or longer in every city and town in Massachusetts, and that Hanover would be #27. At the start of the race today, he announced to the crowd who I was and what I was doing. I got a big round of applause.
No one in my family is any good at making pies. This year we are ordering from the culinary program in the high school where I work. Those students have made lunches for the staff before and I was very impressed with their work. Looking forward to sharing with the rest of my family.
Two of the out of town nephews will be coming for Thanksgiving. Great niece Charlotte has requested that I make Grandma's Coffee Cake.
Feel free to send it my way. I love the game, but I'm not very good. A table would help that.
And I have just the place for it: my son wants one too, and his drum kit would have to go somewhere else!
We're following craigslist just now looking for one in the DC area - there're a remarkable number of unwanted tables out there.

Mine is on the second floor of my two story house built in 2012. I looked at the outside facade today and noticed some cracking in the Marta. I recall signing some kind of waiver years ago.
I just noticed we are on page 911. There must be a pie emergency somewhere...
It's been awhile, but I used to make a lemon chess pie that family members were quite fond of. And my absolute favorite apple pie is my own. Sorry. Can't help it. I love my own pie!
Actually, I think life in general could be defined as a pie emergency.
Very smokey here in the greater Asheville area, thanks to the WNC wildfires.
I can literally smell the smoke inside my apartment.
That is less than ideal...
Mine is a 3 piece of slat table. I think the single piece tables are the most expensive.
Pretty big Powerball jackpot tonight. I bought one ticket.
Generally, I only play when the value of the jackpot exceeds the odds of winning the jackpot. In stat parlance, what is known as a "fair" game. That brings out several practical questions. Cash value or annuity value? Pre or post tax? I also generally play as a pool of 16 of us each contributing $5 per draw. A few in the group want to go more $ per draw, I kindly remind them that they can also buy their own tickets. I probably shouldn't have let it get to $5 as any more than 1 ticket doesn't practically alter your odds enough. But that's another story.
Kids will repeat things they hear their parents say. A lot.
It is a point of pride with me that I have heard more than one of my kids repeat one of my favorites jokes - Your odds of winning the lottery are slightly better if you buy a ticket.
Still Ymo, hope yours is the one!
Maybe discuss with them the percent decrease they are liable to see in their salary when they overcommit and then don't deliver.
I miss Dave Chappelle.
So - red velvet cake?
I miss Jackie Gleason.
I miss Buddy Hackett.
I miss Buster Keaton.
I miss Mark Twain.
I miss Aristophanes.
I miss Leonard Cohen and David Bowie.
I miss Alan Rickman.
I miss Prince.
We missed All Soul's Day.
I would like to post in that other thread but would likely break the rules...
Short work week this week! Taking Friday off to visit a friend outside of Detroit and catch a football game at The Big House.
Snopes dot com. Learn it, live it, love it.
I don't know much about it. Off to check it out now.
Oh - it's a fact checking website.
I'm lucky in that when I first learned of confirmation bias, my confirmation bias became that nothing reported on the internet is true. My bias gets confirmed a lot.
I fact check almost everything, even stuff I agree with.
The latest is a Kurt Cobain quote predicting the election.
How tall are you all? 6 foot here.
5' 4"
5'10"
The production of A Midsummer Night's Dream that I was in this past summer, one evening before the show when we were all getting into costume, I noticed that all the women in the show were basically the same height. We all stood next to each and measured. There was, at most, an inch between the shortest and the tallest of us, except for Puck. Puck was shorter. We then gave our director some crap about it - hinting that we all at least knew how tall his perfect woman was. ;)
A couple inches shorter than 4.5 of these (individually, of course, not the entire pallet):

Closer to 6'1" than 6' 1/2"
Closer to 6'1" than 4'
This was one of my speeches when I played Lady MacDuff in The Scottish Play last summer (it was my summer of Shakespeare). It's been running through my head all day. Thought I'd share
Whither should I fly?
I have done no harm. But I remember now
I am in this earthly world, where to do harm
Is often laudable, to do good sometime
Accounted dangerous folly. Why then, alas,
Do I put up that womanly defense,
To say I have done no harm?
Who has pets?
Two dogs, two cats, two humans in my house.
5'4 and a half. That half was very important to me as an athlete. Although I went a couple years without seeing some college teammates and when we reunited one said she'd swear I'd grown an inch or two. I haven't measured, but I'm going to claim 5'5
My pets are short.
I have 5 cats. I have been asked to take in more but politely declined. They are all named after an actor in a film with Cary Grant as the star.
I also have five cars...
I have no pets. My youngest son has been promised a guinea pig. We need to go get that.
I fell asleep during the second half.
No pets. I used to think about how fun it would be to have a dog. Then I would housesit and remember why I don't have one - you have to come straight home from work and have to find someone to take care of them when you travel. For quite a few years, I'd make money by taking care of other people's pets. Not a bad trade off - get paid for enjoying other people's pets.
I only have 1 car. It is the correct color but I would still prefer a manual transmission.
I have a 20 year old pickup truck.
We have a dog. And four families vying to pet sit.
Awesome dog, if not perfect.
A couple families want to pet sit to keep kids happy. A couple mostly miss having a dog (but love their newfound freedom!)
It works for a bunch of families! A classical neighborhood mutt. If you're in the greater DC area and want to get in on the game, let me know.
-jk
I pet sit for "free" for a couple of neighbors, for their dogs in particular. Actually in place of any compensation, all I ask is that they make a small donation to a local animal shelter, preferably a no kill shelter. I enjoy taking care of the dogs it lets me walk around the neighborhood and feel less self conscious about it. Not that I should, its just different when you are walking a dog.
Ymo you are a terrific person. It makes me happy to read your post!
I do not recognize the legitamacy o fthis thread.
I have a t-shirt that says: Warning - Quotes Shakespeare in Everyday Conversation.
If the thread doesn't fit, you must...
Anyone want to predict what the next thread will be to threaten the accuracy of the LTE name?
My vote: NCAA drops death penalty on UNC for academic violations and general douche-baggery.
2022 Recruiting Thread
PS Post again is always the right answer...
Nothing will ever again threaten the supremacy of the LTE. I've seen to that.
Bwahahahahahaha!
For those of you that are in the mood to include strangers in your prayers, I would request vibes for Molly and her family. Molly, one of my mission trip kids, is in high school and is battling what has been determined to be conversion disorder, where your body translates stress into physiological symptoms, such as numbness in her legs making walking difficult. It has struck again this morning. If you could include her and her mother, father, and brother in your prayers, it would be greatly appreciated. The more prayers, the better.
Thank you.
What are we doing? Hiding from the press after our victory? ;)
On the road again.
It's basketball season and the election is over. Our competitive natures must be focused elsewhere.
I posted over there also. I was going to post Glen Campbell's By The Time I Get To Phoenix. But it didn't fit the Rock nature of that thread. So, I waited until I got to (Viva)Las Vegas. Can Homeward Bound be considered rock?
I do not want to paint the powder room but I also do not want to pay a painter. I am just not feeling it.
How many people at your house for Thanksgiving this year?
I'm down to 4. My two oldest sons are going to Durham to be with Mom, Dad, and their uncles. We thought my youngest was still going to be on chemo when the plans were made. He's not, but we didn't have the energy to change the plans. My turkey is only 9 pounds.
We have 12 this year - about the same as most years...and they're all staying over for at least two days. There's nothing quite like hosting, entertaining and feeding your in-laws for two or three days! I can't say that I relish the prospect of dealing with the endless work and feeding and cleaning up that Thanksgiving has become at our house. We have an infestation of mice (and other varmints) in a small guest house on our property where some of the guests are staying, so I've already been on "mouse patrol" in a somewhat futile attempt to eradicate them (got two last nights with traps!) before Wednesday. I basically write this week off from work.
Of course, I have been banned from the kitchen this year after I "inadvertently" threw out the gravy last year, BEFORE the big meal. LOL.
Watered down turkey. Ugh! Or so says this guy.
-jk
No, the brining is fine. Especially for a smaller turkey. Just make sure you pat it very dry inside and out. I also cook mine upside down for the first half of the suggested time. Bought some heavy duty lined rubber gloves (at Home Depot) to aid in the flipping.
I know DinK has earned her gravy superiority but I would humbly assert that mine is pretty dingydarned good, too. Today's chore was the giblet broth that will now enable the gravy to become even more ethereal by Thursday. Sweet potatoes are absorbing bourbon in the fridge and tomorrow the greatest pie crust in the History Of Mankind will make it's venerated appearance.
It's kind of a one weezie-cooking-band around here but they're all on notice that the post-knee surgery chef superior will not be touching a dirty dish, pot or pan.
As always, I like to keep it humble.
Hey!! I'm like a sweet potato!!!
30-40 gathered at my grandmother's very small home. It's always...interesting.
It used to be more until my great grandmother passed away a few years ago at the age of 98.
We, as many do, have an annual football game in the back yard. Last year was the first year that I was noticeably not one of the better players on the field anymore as my 16 and 17 year old nephews are really starting to impose their will. I can still beat them with footwork and just a touch of mean-old-man dirty play, but they just wait for me to tire and run past me. My uncles sit on the sideline and remind me every play that my time has come to pass the torch, much like I made them do when I was 16-17. They pat an empty lawn chair beside them in their semi-circle as they sip their Miller High Life, saying "Come on, it's waiting for you!!. Got you a spot picked out riiiiight here!!!

Nap time.
Hmmm, I should be more careful what I feed the cats...
Anyone got a lead on big online sales today?
I've been looking but nothing too interesting.
I guess Monday is supposed to be the big online day. Today we are all supposed to be out there IRL.
Bleagh.
Spent time last night trying to convince Great Niece Charlotte that going out to Black Friday shop wasn't a good idea.
I'm a real wanker for saying this.I'm a real wanker for saying this.I'm a real wanker for saying this.I'm a real wanker for saying this. Black Friday.
That is all.
Yup, finished the puzzle last night. Makes sense, did not know that though.
I have enjoyed the invention of electronic crosswords, so you can know if the answer is wrong. I originally thought it was kind of a cheat, but I try to finish with no errors or as few as possible.
Black Friday?
Nope - Opening Night!! Off to the theater later on.
I'm starting to grow weary of turkey.
No, I mean cryptics. They do them in Britain ask the time. Each clue has two clues contained within it. One is a straightforward clue and the other is a word play clue. What makes it challenging is that the solver has to figure out which part of the clue is which, and what the clues mean, and the good puzzles hide it pretty well.
An example clue.
Pop singer upset Prebytarians.(7,6)
Pop singer is the straight up clue. The word upset tells the solver that the word play is an anagram. The numbers in the parentheses tell you the length of the word or words in the answer. Therefore, the answer to the clue is obtained by rearranging the letters of the word Presbytarians into words that mean or are a pop singer.
The answer is Britney Spears.
It's complicated, and there are about 8 different forms of word play that can be used. It takes some getting used to and some practice, but once you get the hang of them they are really satisfying.
^^^^^I am a huge dope. rsvman, I barely understood a word of your description above.
Really, I am embarrassed. :(
Don't feel bad, weezie. It's really complicated and I didn't explain it very well.
Maybe another example will help. Keys stick with clues of the anagram type. There is always a tip off word in the clue to let you know it's an anagram clue. Here's a simple one.
Wild West food (4)
In this clue, the word "wild" tells the solver that there is an anagram in the clue. The word "food" is the straight clue. So, the solver knows that he had to rearrange the four letters of the word "west" into a word that means food.
So, the answer is "stew."
Does that one clarify it a bit?
Theater first last night - our cast got a laugh for our entrance in the blue light!
It's hard to find good stuff online. There are several sites that have online puzzles, but the quality isn't always the best. Henry Rathvon and Emily Cox work together to make some of the best of this type of puzzle, and they've put together several collections. At the beginning of each there is an explanation of each type of clue and some examples of how they are used. They are Canadian, so some of their puzzles have stuff that's harder for Americans to understand.
There is another cryptic crossword writer named Wayne Robert Williams that has several series of puzzle books out. One of these series is entitled "Cryptic Crosswords for US," with the "US" meaning that they were written for American solvers. One of these books might make a good stocking stuffer. They run about 12-16 bucks or so.
I could have used an independent study or two during undergrad...
Didn't plan to be up this late but couldn't stop watching the Chiefs beat the Broncos.
It was a "have to see it to believe it" game. At end of regulation, player is ruled down at about the foot line and time was ready to run out before the Chiefs could run a play. Refs stopped play with 1 second left and the call on the field was overturned - TD Chiefs. They completed the 2 pt conversion. At almost the end of OT, the kicker clanked his attempt off the inside of the left upright so that it bounced through to win the game. Pretty amazing finish.

Here is the picture that Cairo Santos (the kicker) tweeted with this message: "Called the bank shot... just forgot to tell Colquitt. CHIEFS WIN!!"
I love that ^!
My posts have been called cryptic.
My eye rolling has never been called cryptic.
When playing poker, my facial expressions are not cryptic enough. When I have the nuts, I tend to get a $#|+ eating grin...
Forced to watch Friday night TV. Sigh.
Masterpiece "Poldark" has concluded season 2. Great sadness hangs heavily in the tv room of weezie.
I'm surprised she allows you in the same area when she watches it. I have firmly maintained a "no footfall on the stairs" decree when it is on. Tivo or not, the husband is barred from entering the vicinity.
Some men have the tendency to ask irrelevant questions when Poldark is on, as in, "Who is that guy?" or "What is her problem?"
SILENCE!
Might want to include a nice, dreamy pic of Ross Poldark in that gift bundle :o
Shirtless would probably be asking too much, I know....

Merry Christmas.
Explaining the browser history may now be a bit awkward.
Random non-sensical early morning post.
Ever notice how you can be rolling through life, feeling pretty good. and then all of a sudden, take a look at yourself in the mirror and discover that you need a haircut immediately, right that very minute, tout de suite and you cannot wait one single minute more?! And then you look like cold oatmeal until that appointment begins.
Hopping in the car and on my way back to beautimous...
I just don't look in mirrors.
But then I'd miss the chance to tell myself how great I look after my hairstyling. Vanity rocks!
I have been trying to quit smoking again but just broke down and bought a pack. Please forgive me LTE.
I think I may take 5 or 6 from the pack and give the rest to a coworker. I have to quit before January 1st because I signed the Tobacco free pledge at work to get a $500 credit on my insurance.
#everyoneelsegetsbored
Pulled all files from the SD card onto the laptop, then reformatted the SD card from within the phone OS. From that point, the phone was much better about choosing which apps and files need to be stored over there. I'm just still completely confused about how a relatively new phone can come with so little memory on board that the installed apps take up 80% of the storage.
Best of luck to you with quitting. It is a hard habit to quit but your family and friends will enjoy the added years with you.
I lost both parents to lung cancer - sure wish Mom had quit so she would have been with us longer. Dad quit decades before she died but second hand smoke is just as bad.
Sorry to hear that, but thanks for the motivation. I have lost family members to lung cancer as well, I'm not sure how that alone didn't stop me from ever picking up a cigarette. I've never been a pack a day smoker, I may go through a pack in 7-10 days. I would smoke if I was having drinks or if I was stressed out with work. It wasn't until recently that I realized that my habit has gotten a little out of hand. My health isn't worth it, and I made a promise to Blue Cross and Blue Shield:p
I did give half of the new pack to a coworker, so that made me feel a little bit better. Down to my final 8 now...
In other news, I demonstrated great restraint today. I could have knocked out this fool, but my job wasn't worth it. Cooler heads prevailed and the Asheville Police Department was involved. Great way to start off a 4 day weekend!
