Under a hundred here.
So close 3-day. So close!
Going to a young woman's 21st birthday party on our street, Sunday. Lots of young horsey women will be present, I'm sure many will be seeking my sage advice on a variety of issues. Or maybe I will be completely invisible...l
true fact: they are bringing in a Creemee truck (local term for soft serve ice cream which is taken seriously around here)...they also serve humongous gin and tonics, good thing I live 600 yards away...
I believe you. I had dinner at a pizza place in Philadelphia last week with my son and his girlfriend and her family who live in New Hampshire. The “must have” on the dessert menu was soft serve ice cream that prompted a comparison and lengthy discussion on the relative merits of a couple of other brands. For one person there was no comparison or discussion, just a declaration. I had no idea.
The ultimate Creemee Weapon here is the coveted Maple Creemee using gen-you-wine Vermont maple syrup. They are splendid. There is such a Maple Creemee truck that resides only six miles from here, but I don't know if they have been enlisted or not. Take a gander:https://palmerlanemaple.mybigcommerc...creemee-truck/
Horsey women as in women who compete nationally in equine events (along with their horses)...having met some of them, I have to say I am impressed, the biggest deal to me being that they look you in the eye when they speak to you and aren't controlled by their handheld friggin devices...I'm told that has to do with how they are judged in the ring, eye contact with the judges is evidently a big deal...who knew?
I did the trek last year after having two of their enormous gin and tonics. I am proud of my strong G&Ts, typically three ounces of 90 proof gin per drink, and these dwarfed my efforts, had to be five or six ounces...I weaved my way home, that's for sure.
And now we have confirmation, the Maple Creemee Truck will be in attendance from 4-6 pm, toting 100 eight ounce servings of ice cream...I've been advised to bring some Tupperware type device...
I really could use a 4 day weekend.
For the NYC people on the board:

A presidential election thread if you can keep it.
Will it pass the LTE?
Porch tent movie night!
Tomorrow's lacrosse game comes at an inopportune time.
Well, I'm up to one.
Inflatable pool and all the nostalgia that goes with it.
Well let's do the math:
134 posts in the first 32 hours to kick it off, is about 100.5 posts per 24 hour period
529 days (2024 is a leap year right?) till election day 2024 which is November 5th
So 529 days x 100.5 posts/day = 53,164.5 posts. So it depends on how long after Election Day/24 the mods will allow the thread to fester.
All I can say is that is 53,164 posts making the mods life an utter hell...is...consume at your own risk I guess.
Pretty good beer butt chicken last night if I do say so.
I'm trying to spice up Boomerville. Nobody has any new thoughts. We're hitting most of the old timers greatest hits. They picked their brand in the 70s and 80s and they are sticking to those ideas, evidence to the contrary be wankered.
To be fair, I don't have new thoughts either. My drum keeps beating that the candidates - and our discussions of the horse race - ignore younger voters at their peril. If it happens again in 2024 - because it did happen in 2020 and 2022 - I'm sure a whole bunch of posters will blame candidate quality, again.
big day...birthday party down the road, horsey women, massive gin and tonics, famous maple creemee truck.
RIP, Harambe. 7 years.
My wife just called out a clue from the Penny/Dell crossword book she is working. The clue was "Pretender", and the answer was ... "Seemer".
SEC baseball title in the books, now for a NCAA Men's lacrosse title.

Must stay away from the succession thread.
we did great, mission accomplished: massive creemee, massive gin and tonic (one and only one) and nice rare burger...did not get the turnout from the horsey women I had hoped for, but we did have a decent crowd of them...now we rest and go to another nearby home for dinner....started the day with coffee and Succession, which was most enjoyable. And the weather is grand, 75 degrees and sunny, 27% humidity, dewpoint of 39. Perfect for doing work outside which I will certainly not do.
Taught my son to pee standing up outside this weekend. Bhee very happy with this development in his life. 😂
The second best thing about a three day weekend is the subsequent 4 day work week.
Anyone have a great way to unload a dead vehicle? 26 year old Mazda pickup truck - blown head gasket. My understanding is that there's some legit value in the parts. But I don't want to spend the next 6 weeks of my life selling on Craigslist.
Of course, the death certificate for this vehicle cost me just shy of a thousand bucks, so I'd like to recoup some of that expense.
In my area, pick and pull junk yards will come tow dead vehicles away and give you a small amount of cash.
You won't make any significant money, but they at least tow it away for free and give you something.
They don't seem to operate in NC, but I would expect there are similar operations there.
Maybe this one:

I have no experience with this particular business, but their daughter was an excellent VB student-athlete at my school. I'm not sure that translates into reputable-auto-recycling-family, but I'll throw it out there anyway: https://www.johnsonncusa.com/
Maybe I’m confused, why did it cost you 1000 bucks for your car to be given the last rites. Did you pay someone to tell you it has a blown head gasket? I have a 2001 Toyota Corolla with 300,000 miles on it that has reached its serviceable limit. I had to push it out of a Chapel Hill intersection last night actually/-alternator this time (which I had plenty of advance notice was dying… stupid.). Looking at buying an Audi SUV to replace it assuming I can find one that comes without a turbo.
It was a long line of issues that was capped with a blown head gasket. Water pump was replaced first. Then I take manifold gasket. Then the head gasket was blown.
Overheating was the presenting issue to begin with. Not sure if the gaskets blew as a result of the water pump - I'm not a car guy, but it seems possible.
Trickle down pressure issues I guess.
It wasn't a great mechanic experience, to say the least.
Around here (Durham), an ad for that on Craigslist would get you an offer within hours. The engine in my mom's Camry blew ~2010. It was a 1997. The rest of the car was in great shape. Sold it for $800 to a guy who had an engine to put in it. Someone will buy it.
it's amazing how expensive used cars are now, though primarily for those still running, of course. I easily sold my 17 year old Volvo...
Only 61k behind.
Suddenly the POTUS thread made me shudder.
Sometimes you just know it's a white, straight dude posting. You know?
Just one more day left of VBS - not sure if I should be happy or sad
Someone got in trouble. Ummmuummmmuuumm!
On the basketball side, any good thread becomes a minutes discussion. Over here any good thread becomes the LTE.
It is Friday.
birthday related, yesterday I bought my annual donuts, an eight pack of Entenmanns chocolate frosted donuts. https://www.target.com/p/entenmann-3...E&gclsrc=aw.ds
Peak Freans are a very serious cookie.
Those donuts were a staple of my freshman year. I lived in Pegram and would go to the grocery store, I think it was an A&P, across from East and using my freshly minted checkbook from CCB, buy some donuts and other snacks. Those were the days.
I hope the following doesn’t get me reported and infracted, but here goes:
I watched uNC thankfully lose in baseball yesterday. But sometimes (rarely) there is a uNC athlete that you have to admire. The announcers said that their pitcher Kevin Eaise had brain cancer as a child and recovered. He is a grad student transfer from Penn, and plans on going to med school. His family is involved in a charity supporting research for pediatric brain tumors. I wish him the best.
Okay, now back to hating just about everything else about the cheaters.
Sometimes you just have to say efff it and go for the PopTarts. The problem is the boxes don't last very long.
Slow day on the ol’ LTE.
Pancakes. Imma put blueberries in them.
lawnmowing on tap, high of 62, cloudy, nice conditions (the last time I said this it snowed).
Flying to Edmonton this morning. Have been on the Northshore area of Nola this week.
Not as much as Asheville to New Orleans was. 50s and raining in Asheville to 90 in New Orleans. 70-80 in Edmonton with lows upper 50s to low 60s. Never been there, but supposed to have a pretty good food scene. Indian and Korean are usually sooooooo good in Canada.
any time to see Elk Island National Park???...got them a mess of bison and other cool stuff..https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ab/elkisland
And on to Monday
picking up my 35 year old suit which is being a bit re-tailored...
major move: after 35 years of digging down to my septic tank every five years, i'm bringing in a guy who will add a "riser" to the tank so digging will no longer be required, plus he'll do the digging this time! SO happy...
dig and pump, Bob's my uncle!
RFK and family just got dumped on me, I was the closest guy around when Mr Big needed a taxi service for his fancy guests.
No ruffles on the suit! This was a top of the line suit 35 years ago, I have not worn it in 30 years (after the company went to informal dress) but it manages to have survived at least several cycles of suit fashion...no wide lapels, fits really nicely. Replacing that suit at the same store with a brand new one would now cost $1400, alternative would be some Men's Wearhouse mediocre suit for $400...we'll see how it goes, same tailor who did the initial alterations, we had quite a yuck fest a few weeks ago.
Your location got me thinking about the old Edmonton Eskimos, came to mind that might no longer be acceptable, and sure enough they are now the Elks, so there's that.
Having fun up there?
Honestly I have been blown away. It doesn't have the scenery that Calgary has because of the proximity to the mountains. So it's a Plains City and pretty flat although it does have a Riverfront area that I'm going to go walk around later. But when I got here yesterday it was 85° and there were hundreds of people out in the streets enjoying the weather. All the restaurants had outdoor seating and I found a really cool spot to eat and hang out. I had sort of assumed this place would be like Regina (so ummm...about that pronunciation. Can we change that?). Which basically has an architectural style I would classify as late "19th Century Penitentiary Style". But the area I found was cool and would be indistinguishable from neighborhoods in Chicago, KC, St Louis or any kind of eclectic Midwestern US city.
Don’t forget Punkydoodles Corners!

I'm on the record as absolutely loving canada. I have deep thoughts about all of these cities. Saskatoon is a beautiful city and has great food and lots of new, glass buildings. I was very surprised. Winnipeg and Regina are the two least attractive cities. But Winnipeg has really good food, and I mean really good. Edmonton is further north than any of them and is the furthest North big city in canada, so I assumed it would be kind of ugly. But Saskatoon and Edmonton have an absolute ton of oil money and you can tell.
My father used to know a men's suit wholesaler in Van Nuys, CA. The gentleman used to supply boutique shops across the US or so he claimed. So, the Christmas break prior to graduation, my father took me over to the warehouse and we picked out a suit and a blue blazer. He then showed us a giant board with dozens of labels for various shops around the US and told us to pick a couple out and they would be attached to the clothing. Not being anywhere near the NYC suit scene, we just picked a couple out. Googling them now, we did not choose wisely or his clientele were not as boutique as he said.
And on to Tuesday…y
Those wily Canadians throwing another curve ball at us...a few weeks ago it was smoke from Alberta wildfires, then it was smoke from Nova Scotia (weird weather pattern, that) and now we've got the big red sun courtesy of wildfires north of Montreal.
let's go outside and prepare for Septic Man tomorrow...do a wee bit of digging to show him the spot...hope my measurements are correct!
I believe we lost our second cat in a month last night. Quick yelp followed by a scuffle we heard through the window. Probably a coyote.
I know it is just a cat, but jeez I'm sad and it sucks.
that's not good. The town we've lived in for 35 years is well known as town in which you can't have an outdoor car, too many fishers and coyotes. We warned a new neighbor about this a few summers ago, she said she'd give it a try anyway, and he cat lasted one night. It's tough out there, because we don't like losing our pets...sorry to hear about your loss...
Sorry Mountain. That's tough.
My condolences Mtn.Devil on the passing of your two feline family members.
I've lived in NC for over 20 summers and have never seen a venomous anything...until tonight. I'm thinking I had a baby copperhead try to strike twice as I went for a walk just after dusk. I didn't see it until it was too late, but I was pretty far outside its strike range. It was only 6-8 inches long and was sitting on the curb on the street. I know prime baby snake season runs with prime hurricane season. The snake was left alone for those more concerned with its welfare than mine.
Thoughts? Is it too early to have to worry about this in my neighborhood?
Sending you my condolences. Cookie, the oldest of my three guinea pigs turns 5 this summer, maybe she already is. Guinea pigs live 5-7 years on average. I know we're on the downside of her lifespan and I'm going to take it hard when she goes. Evie will be 5 in the fall. Pumpkin is only 2.
Distinct yellowish haze in the air during morning walk along the river.
Lots of Canadian smoke.
it's amazing how far the smoke travels, and it's worse in a lot of those Midlantic places than it is here, though we are geographically much much closer to the firest. And it is smoky here...
