True story: The pork rinds at Dollywood are some of the best theme park food anywhere, and very possibly the best pork rinds anywhere. I go through two large bags on every visit.

I have no kids but was under the impression that many were born naked...true?
ew! Like the deer born in our backyard a couple years ago, mom licked about a quart of slime off that guy...I guess that's some kind of lube to keep him moving down the chute, eh?
just concluded the daily Long Walk...dew point of 71, I'm slimed myself...cooler air tomorrow!
The thing that would make me angrier than anything in deliveries was when the when the mom was trying to not use pharmaceutical interventions and she was in obvious distress but the husband would talk down to her about how important it was to stick to the birth plan. I wanted to channel my inner Aimo and take home boy out into the hallway and see how he dealt with pain. I support people doing what they want to do but it ain't none of your damn business if she needs help.
I recall being offered an amuse bouche of placenta back in our counterculture days, somehow I passed on it, went for the beer and cheese.
My wife is a little irked that on hour 4 they brought her a popsicle and I ate most of it. In my defense, she said she didn’t want anymore but I guess I wasn’t supposed to enjoy it so much? I don’t know.
For our first, I climbed up onto the hospital bed and lay down next to my wife in the early stages of her labor...and fell asleep. She said she found that comforting, so I guess I lucked out.
Ugly day in the world, good to share positive memories.

Here's my positive for the day. Picture of Shiprock from my last mission trip there. Beautiful country and wonderful people. I think we had storms in the area every evening - it made for some beautiful sunsets.
Ugh. Yeah, some bad stuff happened today. We can't talk politics, so, I'm not, but I will comment that I am not impressed with how it's being handled. Hope that isn't too PBB.
Also, I let my temper get away from me a little bit in the plague thread. I'm sure many of you noticed. Then I got in the car and drove from the DC area to Williamsburg. I have no desire to tangle with the instigator anymore, so, to prevent me from going over there and starting it all over, give me the tl;dr summary. I am a bit surprised I didn't get an infraction. Maybe one is coming.
And I've given myself another vacation from the plague thread.
Also - did anyone else get a PM telling them to stop being condescending and dismissive?

Devils Tower is in Wyoming. And, it’s sideways.
(SonPK rocking the shades when he was about 8 or 9).
less humid air today. Humidity makes people cranky. Whatever happened to kids who'd wander by and offer to cut your lawn for five bucks? (yeah, they're in nursing homes).
Yes it is a nasty world out there right now, so I will share some more pics. This is me, around 7 yo, in my Holly Hobbie nightgown and my Holly Hobbie's friend Amy doll. Found some more old slides at my mom's.

Family creativity to give as flowers to Niece Elizabeth after high school musicals. One was for Annie and one for Seussical. I bet you can determine which is which. :D
Yes. People came up to say how lovely the roses were - when you got close enough, you could definitely smell the vanilla. The Seussical bouquet is sugar cookies and marshmallow Horton's sitting on chocolate/noodle nests.
The Hortons ended up being more difficult than anticipated but I would not give up (sisters did) - I thought they turned out pretty good.
The best part about both "bouquets" is that everyone in the family had a hand in making it happen - from selecting the paper to wrap the box, frosting the cookies, helping make the leaves for the roses. My sisters selected what we were doing and I ended up making some of the execution happen (frosted the roses, made the Hortons, directed/helped frosting the cookies). We sometimes over-estimate our abilities.
Yes, I'm also the one that went over at midnight to take my cake decorating bags/tips and stayed for a couple of hours to help frost the two Power Ranger birthday cakes. It does say sucker on my forehead. :D
I could go for this - hopefully you won't think I'm as annoying as the Aunts in the Geico commercial.
I would especially enjoy time with the two Baby Bundabergdevils and if anyone needs a fan in the stands, I love to go to sporting/dance/theater events to cheer people on.
I’m too polite and proper to ask how someone would know the color of their aunt’s bedroom, so I won’t ask.
Does anyone baste their fried eggs in bacon grease while cooking?
Hip mobility...
I smell blueberry pancakes!
Sigh. The harassment continued. Is there a way to block DBR uses from sending you PMs? Otherwise, perhaps if I just ignore them they will feel they have won and I'll chalk it up to just another wanker thinking they have a right to "put me in my place".
I don't know that I want to give them the satisfaction of thinking that they got to me. Also, the language isn't exactly harassing. It's all couched in a "who me" veneer probably designed to give themselves some cover.
I mean - did they get to me? I'm trying to decide. I think this person is trying to shut me up. I think this person is male. So, sadly, with this type of male, I actually do become, privately and to myself, exactly what he has accused me of, dismissive.
I will say this publicly with the caveat that present company is excepted, but I have had to deal with men who cannot keep up with me intellectually all my life. I will treat them with respect until they start pulling the nonsense that some of them do when they also realize that they cannot keep up with me intellectually and their reaction is to try to bring me down. After that, I will endeavor, outwardly, to continue to treat them with respect, but inwardly, I ain't got time for them or their opinions which I dismiss out of hand.
It has taken me most of my life to give up feeling guilty about the fact that there are men who cannot keep up with me intellectually. I did not marry one of those. None of my sons are in that category either. Thank goodness.
My thoughts on this: I married an exceptionally strong and accomplished woman and we are raisong our daughter to be one as well. Maybe it is working in medicine, which skews female, but I have no tolerance for the masculinity crap. If you need that, go be a longshoreman or lumberjack.
I have way too much respect for longshoremen and lumberjacks to encourage that! ;)
Nah, what they actually do is work in financial services. Apologies to any financial services types who post here! Again, present company excepted. It's not all financial services types.
1) Bostondevil - just be yourself, that is all we will ever ask
2) Probably because I had a case of shingles 5 or so years ago, this Shingrix vaccine is definitely having an impact. In fact, it may be worse than the actual case I had. Not looking forward to dose #2. Upside is that I'm likely to be 4-5 lbs. lighter by Monday/Tuesday. Fluid intake is good but zero hunger.
3) Yeah, I got nothing else. 2 items just seemed to short for a list.
I am truly a sports junkie. Watching la Vuelta in the morning and Para Olympics in the evenings/overnight.
Wheelchair Rugby aka Murder Ball is quick and fun to watch. Goal Ball depends entirely on hearing and touch - the lines are strings under tape so the players can feel it.
I haven't figured out all the various levels in the events but the training of the athletes and their support staff is amazing.
I am in Williamsburg, VA right now, staying in an Airbnb that doesn't have the tv channel that is showing la Vuelta. :( That's the only downside. Moved T-Bone into his dorm room today, mostly. He decided to spend one more night with us at the Airbnb, mostly so we could get in a family round of miniature golf. We are cut-throat when it comes to miniature golf around here. We played Pirate's Cove. We took no prisoners. (I did not have a good night. I intend to exact my revenge tomorrow.)
I'm not sure which is more disappointing - the fact that this is happening to you on DBR, or the fact that you are so accustomed to it happening in your life.
I have seen a massive wane in misogyny over the arc of my lifetime in many arenas, but posts like this remind me how much work is left to.
These Neanderthals should be embarrassed.
Pretty much back to normal. I should say that my case of shingles struck me as mild from a pain perspective. The bigger concern was that it was on my face. Getting it diagnosed was the bigger issue I ran into. Urgent care was no help, the ER diagnosed in a couple minutes of seeing me.
I need to get my Shingrix. Not looking forward to it. My mom had a mild case, after getting the original vaccine. She recognized the symptoms and went that day to Urgent Care, where her diagnosis was confirmed. Was put on antivirals right away. That combined with the vaccine contributed to a very mild case. But it was close to her eye, which was scary. She needs to get her Shingrix now, too.
Time is of the essence. I was fortunate enough to get diagnosed VERY early at an urgent care place on Topsail Island a few years ago, I'd been mystified at the itchy (incredibly itchy) eruptions on my left arm. Zero pain. Thoughtful doc diagnosed shingles, got me started immediatetly with an anti-viral drug...the entire arm erupted the next day, confirming his dianosis, but the drugs stopped it dead in its tracks, it was gone quickly. The point being, if one suspects Shingles, get looked at quickly, very quickly.
Lovely morning for a wagon ride.
Video game pitch: marsupials fight to the death. Call it, Mortal Wombat.
Done, now what do I read?
So, when I started undergrad, wine coolers were a thing...
My case was close to my eye also. It started on my jawline and moved up my face. The lack of proper diagnosis at the urgent care delayed my getting proper treatment for a few days. Friday evening I went to the ER. A PA(ex-military) looked at me when I walked in and said, "You've got shingles. We'll have to in process you and then run the tests. After that, we will put you on an anti-viral IV drip and then send you home." 4 hours later I was home. I could feel the drugs working as I was hooked up to the IV. With respect to the current situation that we find ourselves in, as noted by the plague thread, I now believe a more minimal level of standard of care provided to all would greatly assist us a country. I would not have said that 5 years ago. I'm all for the insurance approach, being in insurance myself(Property/Casualty), but now believe that is not sufficient unto itself. One of the things you don't realize, growing up as an Army/military brat, is that not everyone has access to dentists and doctors that you go see on regular schedules.
I drink very little liquor anymore and have likewise trended toward beer as a greater and greater percentage of my drinking, but a wayward weekend in hospital rooms next to an, erm, cantankerous patient has me reconsidering that calculus.
I drink wine and liquor pretty exclusively. I'm going to guess I average 2 shots of Scotch a year, and probably 5 glasses of wine, maybe 6. Every year.
I drink more than I smoke though. I used to average a cigarette every 3 years, but lately, it's more like one every 5 years. When I do have my quintennial (sic) cigarette, I only smoke with theater people and only when I can bum a cigarette. They are bad influences on me.
I know you didn't mean it to come out this way, but your language here is not elegant. My son has Down Syndrome, and he is far more popular and gracious than I will ever be. So please be clear: It isn't the lack of intellect that actually bothers you. It is the presence of attitude.
Get the vaccine. Neither my wife nor I got it when we should have, and shingles subsequently caused her enough nerve damage to impart permanent, partial but not-fully-correctible hearing loss. I learned the lesson and got mine. It was painful, but completely worth it.
Boar on the floor
Yep! We’re re-watching the first two seasons in preparation. On second viewing, I could argue for Connor Roy as the most astutely observed character even if he’s on the periphery.
The mess Kendall makes at both the board meeting and the wedding…wow, great tension-filled scenes.
Absolutely correct, it is not the lack of intellect that bothers me, it is the lack of respect for mine. Please accept my apologies. I have great respect for those who can be popular and gracious, in my experience they possess an ability to see the good in others most of us can only dream of having.
I have a question. I know I can reply to PMs in "mobile", but if I am going to send a new PM I have to go to "standard". Took me a few weeks to figure that out in the halcyon days of the Presidential Thread. Can you spork from "mobile" or do you have to go into "standard"? The reason I ask is when I spork I don't receive any indication that said spork was sent. I do have quite a few of you I can't spork because of the spork rules...which should be relaxed on this thread, because this is a small group. But just like in my home, no one cares what I think.
I think you spork on mobile with the +/- button at the bottom of the post, to the left of 'Report' and 'Quote'.
First day of school today.
My colleague had to have a kidney removed somewhat unexpectedly so I'm teaching his courses in addition to mine. That means my 0.15 posts/day is about to drop precipitously.
Waiting patiently for the gas crisis to hit Asheville. We love to panic after a gulf storm and make life hard for everyone.
I'm coming down on the side of mandatory procrastination, but I'm not quite there yet. Maybe tomorrow.
Ida here mid-week. 100% humidity this AM. Blech.
Chocolate chip pancakes > chocolate chip muffins
I'm always grateful for the wonderful, deep thinking debates on the LTE.
In that vein, has anyone tried the Pop Tart Bites? Would like a report.
I’m a big big fan of warm blueberry muffins, slather of butter, streusel big glass of cold milk. Little bit of heaven as far as I’m concerned.
I do also like pancakes but prefer straight buttermilk. I had pancakes almost every morning for breakfast one year in high school. Country crock and, ahem, a since renamed syrup. I’ve upgraded to butter and pure maple as the good lord intended.
I realize I am bring wrath down upon me, but I am a Miracle Whip girl. All my life. Mayonnaise has no flavor., homemade or not MW has zing. It's just mayo with vinegar and spices added to it. I have had folks who swear by mayo to tell me that my spinach dip is better than theirs - what do I do differently? I use MW, not mayo. My homemade blue cheese dressing tastes better, pimiento cheese, potato salad, etc. The only difference is, I use Miracle Whip.
Fight me now!!!!
Hey, if you're going to go all Miracle Whip, then I get to keep the Log Cabin, which has been on my table for more than half a century. I like maple to be cut with something. I like chocolate to be cut with something, too. That's just the way it is. I can like all those things and you can have your Miracle Whip - especially since THAT needs to be cut with something, too. Unless you are just whacko and eat Miracle Whip straight off the spoon, in which case you should put your tail between your legs, fold back your ears, and hang your furry head in shame.
I have no fight with you. We were a MW house growing up so I use it most of the times a recipe calls for mayo. Occasionally, I will use mayo instead of MW - Niece Amy made an apple slaw that used the olive oil mayo and it was great. I wouldn't substitute MW in this recipe.
You have to clean the spoon off somehow before it goes in the dishwasher.
Yip!
Mayonnaise is profoundly overrated and not worth arguing over in the first place. It's essential for like three things, and that's about it.
I ain't got a dog in this fight.
