Thinking about Pop Tarts.
Waiting until 11am to check on my son in Vermont regarding the hurricane.
he'll be totally fine assuming he is still at UVM...a robust but fast moving storm...southern part of the state had a lot of power outages, but not up here.
Despite what some people think, we are not immune from hurricane (or subsequent tropical storm) damage..a few years ago Irene did more than a billion dollars damage here, epic flooding in southern VT and impressive
flooding in Waterbury (aptly named) where the state office complex got wiped out.
Report from Paddies: "I hardly noticed that there was a storm."
If anyone uses Bank of America on line banking, be aware that they’re having system problems. I logged on and all of my accounts showed “low funds” and $0.00 balance. A call to them alleviated my fears, as they assured me my funds were still there and they were working to repair their system.
They shouldn’t do that to an old man. I didn’t have heart problems before, but I may have now!
No BofA here, but I do have a BofA Merrill account.
My wife gets an almost daily Wells Fargo scam note, telling her to gather up her credit card and then give them a call, because an evildoer may be charging stuff to her account.
Alas, she has no Wells Fargo account.
Yep, I get the Wells Fargo scams, BofA scams, Chase scams, and a few others. Bunch of crooks out there.

How much hog waste flowed down the rivers due to rain/flooding this time?
I recently started using Babbel to learn Spanish. It’s a great app. Very much enjoying it and making quick progress!
2F cooler today than forecast. Still triple digits in our near future.
Worked with Habitat for Humanity today. We worked on getting the trusses up to the roof so that they could be installed. Those puppies are heavy. Fortunately, there were some other volunteers to help our group with them so we made pretty good work with it. I think we got them up and the others installed as fast as if they had brought a crane to lift them up. Bonus - got to try out the nail gun on some of the outside walls. :D
I HIGHLY recommend the Pimsleur program if you are just looking for conversational/travel proficiency in a language. I received compliments in both Italy and France for being conversant despite having studied neither.
Language is culture, and every country is proud of theirs. I have found through travels that if you can speak some rudimentary travel chat, even where everyone speaks English, locals are much more friendly and receptive because you tried to respect their culture.
When I chaperoned a bunch of middle schoolers on a trip to France, the other mom chaperones got jealous (not really, it was a running joke) of all the waiters that flirted with me.

Jesus! - I think the investment thread approved play for me would be to just stake you in that DBR tailgate tourney, given the company you keep. But as is well-known from my pie betting, I'm always game. I'll def have to check out The Orleans, including their oysters. One day.
I always liked Ferguson. He's one of the original legends who helped make poker so huge on the world poker tour, travel channel IIRC. Seeing a math genius like him also slice bananas by throwing a card across the room was just cool.
My wife loves me because I speak French, and will double love me after I learn Spanish.
But seriously, MtnDevil, you are 100% correct (can’t spork you atm).

I also have a shot of me crashing and photobombing a selfie my friend took with Daniel Negraneau, but that will have to wait for a different day . . . .
I have a good Irish wool cap I am fond of wearing on the three days it is cold here.
DaughterPK got me a snazzy Lands End wide-brim straw hat for summer, which keeps the sun off my neck, ears, and ever-growing scalp while also allowing for air flow. As you can imagine, that one gets a lot more wear.
Some random baseball hats, my favorites being one from Carlsbad Caverns and one a friend gave me from Kent State. A really beat-up one from some island in the Caribbean that escapes me at the moment. But not a big baseball hat guy.
My right shoulder was sore this morning and I attributed it to lifting trusses yesterday. It is actually a bruise. I don't remember dropping my section of a truss on myself so it might just be the result of letting them rest on my shoulder as I carried my end over the course of the day. Should be interesting to watch how the bruise progresses.
I knew I shouldn't have mentioned the soffit incident of 2015 at the beginning of the day.
Boston area weather report: it is not too hot to knit.
Get together with nine friends tonight in a parking area in Stowe next to the bike path...beverages will be served, social distancing observed, superb conditions: 78 degrees, low humidity, dew point of 50.
Social interaction is required, dogs will be present...

(as it applies to my similar get-together tonight or tomorrow, and not yours where everyone is spectacular).
Too hot here to knit. And have a socially distanced gathering.
Hmmm, I now seem to be on a two week haircut cycle.

Visiting my parents and stayed at their place last night. Was awoken around 4am by scratching and scurrying. Seems they have a mouse in the wall.

Ugh, they have pictures. . . .
Of the nudist dude? Barf
48 degrees the last two morning, nice sleeping weather...
We could use some nice sleeping weather. Which would hopefully not include nudists or snakes.
17 lbs. lost since Covid quarantine started. However, my diet is slipping back to some old habits. Darn you Amazon Pantry and your sugary goods!
Just got word Holden Beach is opening for renters tomorrow. Turkapalooza back on!! Much rejoicing in the Commonwealth!!
Apparently, Hamlet was wrong.
Woo Hoo, the Snowguard 3000s have been installed, lifestyle benefit!
Is the Snowguard 3000 a magical broomstick you can use in the winter?
This is not the weekend I can skip mowing the grass.:(
Bout to kick off my birthday weekend. Weird this year, of course, but my wife has done a great job (as always) of planning a fun series of events.
So, apparently, the local burger chain aims to go countrywide.
And they have a new food truck.
14:14, 14:54, and 15:14
That is the difference in usable daylight today in the last three places I've lived. I noticed when I first moved here 8 years ago that it got dark early here by the end of August.
Happy birthday, Wilson!
For us, it is the silver lining for it being the hottest time of the year. The daylight hours peak just as it really starts to heat up in mid June. Our day is already an hour shorter than at the summer solstice and being further south are much shorter than Cincinnati and Boston.
I don't get you wrong. ;)
I wish! If you have a (standing seam) metal roof, the snow at some point (many factors, depth, water content, temperature, etc) slides off. When this happens just around cocktail hour, I turn grumpy, because it MUST be shoveled up lest it turn into a nasty mountain of ice over night...This dynamic occurs both in front of our garage doors and our front door/deck. I've lived with it like this for 20 years, I shall live under it's tyranny no longer!
The real name of the product is the S-5, but how boring is that? Vive La Snowguarde Trois Milles!https://s-5.com/products/snow-retention/
Done after a late start and a 12 minute conversation outside with the neighbor. We both work for the same company, he needed to vent. I had a mask on for 4 of it. We were about 10 feet apart. In retrospect, I should have kept the mask on but I needed to clean my glasses.
PS I did not touch my face to remove the mask and glasses. I should have just kept it on...
I shared a blanket with a friend for a picnic lunch yesterday. We sat on opposite ends of the blanket and did not sit facing each other. Still, we both took a bit of a risk. Town where she lives 0.7% positivity rate, town where I live 0.8% still, it's not zero. Riskiest thing I've done since March.
I did not mow the lawn today, but, I did clean my guinea pigs' cage.
Yeah, it was the riskiest situation I've encountered in 7 weeks. Old habits die hard however and he could tell I was nervous about it.
My cousin is officially a doctor now, at the ripe age of 26 :o

We’ve talked about Pop Tarts, but have we talked about how to eat Pop Tarts?
Strawberry Frosted this morning by the way...
Umm...
I just felt an earthquake. Mountaindevil...did you feel that too?
Earthquake was 5.1 Sparta, NC around 8:11 AM
I've been in quite a few seismic events, from New England to California(Northridge aftershocks).
According to news reports, the earthquake was centered in Sparta and measured 5.1.
This Old House Insider...
Costco run this morning, champagne party on the deck this evening featuring my wife, my trusty hound, and moi...maybe a couple of birds.
I had a very Bostondevil-y day yesterday. My knitting group got together over Zoom then I went to rehearsal for Romeo & Juliet. Our Mercutio has an amazing backyard complete with pool. We've never had the complete cast together at the pool but yesterday was the third time most of us got together to rehearse poolside. There were 9 of us with plenty of room to maintain proper distance, some in the pool. We are going to try to get one more poolside rehearsal in before the weather gets too cold for swimming. We're dropping down to once a month rehearsals but we are still going. The dream of someday performing this show before an audience remains intact. We're thinking 2021, maybe next summer, maybe outdoors. The set was nearly finished when we shut down. It's still standing, in the theater, awaiting our return.
Started packing the apartment yesterday. Vacuum sealed some bags. Left to get more supplies. Returned home to unsealed bags. Found scratches from the cats on the bag. Woke up at 3:30am to one of the cats regurgitating some of the plastic on the carpet.
Happy Monday!
Sometimes but isn't about what you know, but who you know
My son turned two last week. Whew.
I know you've all been really worried about me...you've probably noticed that my 0.2 posts/day has dropped precipitously to 0.12 posts/day over the past two years. Helping to keep a tiny human alive has seriously cut into my DBR time. I seriously need to readjust my priorities. I have been lurking, so don't worry, I'm caught up on everything LTE/COVID/2020 Election related.
On a somewhat related note, my wife and I watched West Side Story on Netflix. Yep, BD, it really stinks.
On another related note, Hamilton is pretty amazing.
Ok. Be looking for another post from me in about 3 years or so :)
[ Just trying to do my part to keep the LTE the LTE...even though the prospects are looking grim ]
As to our prospects - they did have it down to under 100 posts but then got beaten back.
We only need a couple more at the moment to get back up over 200.
I was going to post here before the thread became a misnomer, but I guess that danger has passed for the moment.
I'm trying to do my part.
Any prayers/vibes you want to send Brother-in-law Alan's way tomorrow would be appreciated. He is scheduled for hip replacement surgery. Currently, it is pretty much bone on bone and very painful.
Pro tip: Aim for a wife who will make you a birthday cake like this.

Tripped over a local radio station re-streaming chunks of Woodstock now playing - Joan Baez - "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" "We Shall Overcome" what pipes!! wxpn.org
Maybe people are tired of posting about beer?
(Doubtful.)
Seattle. Loading up the trailer on the 22nd. Taking a 6-8 road trip from Indy to get there.
Not directed at anyone in particular, but it is really off-putting when folks on one thread insult folks on another thread just because they have different interests. Part of the allure of DBR is the acceptance of diverse points of view and interests. For me, at least.
FWIW, YMMV.
Ahhh, that's right. Some sight seeing on the way. Between freshman and sophomore year, I drove from McMinnville, OR to Durham along that northern route. Stayed a couple days in Fargo, ND. A short stop in Lexington, KY. No other stops along the way. I went the other direction a few years later(1993) and did take my time to see the sights, etc.
It was first suggested a couple of years ago. I think they are glad they waited until after the move - the surgeons here have better ratings. Sister Sue actually worked with the surgeon when he was going through residency back in the day. (Sister Sue is a physical therapist.) This puts the surgery back with the family orthopods - one year, 4 family members had visits with the group - two knees, one Achilles, and just a bad sprain. I only went to the doctor for a sprain if I woke up in pain in the middle of the night. Otherwise, I just wrapped it for the next soccer game. :o
Vibes from PA.

Just cranked up a giant pot of Brunswick stew, and I have some leftover frozen collard greens thawing. Should be a tasty evening.
I feel fortunate to have kept it to just one hernia surgery so far.
Bad news: Holden Beach sea turtle nests took a beating in the storm!!
Good news: Who doesn't want to watch file footage of baby turtles!!
https://abc11.com/holden-beach-hurri...nests/6361188/
I also insult musicals in general and West Side Story in particular.
That said though, if you want to enjoy a chocolate ice cream cone while watching Natalie Wood lip sync to Marni Nixon's vocals, I will not think less of you. Just don't make me do it with you!
I will drink beer with people, but not very often.
But, I can also be around other people drinking beer and I will enjoy being with them, whether or not I have a beer. If I am around other people watching West Side Story, I won't enjoy being with them, at least while the movie is on.
I had some green beans last night that for a millisecond made me think I was eating fried okra. I even got out the Ranch dressing to use as a dip. Healthy, I know.

My hot take of the day:
I do not like jerky. I don't understand how one could enjoy dried up meat. Ychh.
Hmmm, there isn't a Ymmm, beans thread is there?
The discussion earlier today convinced me to have a look at the Ymm, Beer thread. I don't check it out very often. That last time I looked, they were making fun of people for posting about lawnmowers.
It's just a bunch of links to music videos!
No beer for a whole page.
Really - all of that stuff is just LTE posts in a different thread.
T-Bone leaves for William&Mary on Wednesday. Assuming a negative Covid test (haven't gotten the results yet, hope they get posted by Wednesday night!), he moves into his triple room by himself on Thursday.
Wednesday's Episode will be "The Quarantine Adventures of T-Bone and Dad!" The Drewsk is staying here, probably for the whole semester as UMD is going to be remote only.
T-Bone may spend the entire semester in a room by himself taking online classes. I still think it is better for him to be there and not here. It's a risk but he's an introvert that doesn't like to go to college parties. He may miss at least some social interaction though, but I'm hoping he will find one or two other students that will eat lunch and/or dinner with him.
William & Mary is expanding their outdoor seating at their dining halls. He's a New England kid who wore shorts to class in Vermont in December - he won't mind eating outside in Southern Virginia until Thanksgiving. ;)
The only classes that have announced (that I know about) are going to be remote. I'm hoping he will be able to at least meet with his professors a couple of times during the semester in person, 6 feet apart, of course.
He has been assigned some videos to watch by Friday. One of them is about proper hand-washing. The school is keeping track of whether or not he has logged in. He is not happy about this, as he says, "OMG, I know how to wash my hands!"
I told him to just log on and load up the videos but he doesn't have to actually watch them.
He has to take an online "Understanding Alcohol" course too. He took one before his freshman year at UVM.
He is not happy about this either.
T-Bone likes an occasional beer. He feels he deserves one after his father has made him mow the lawn. Or after any yardwork. His dad and I agree.
Apparently it was an oft-repeated ritual:
http://blog.damelionetwork.com/sport...esson-for-life
Quote:
Basketball legend and top sports motivational speaker BILL WALTON will never forget his first practice under the legendary UCLA Bruins coach John Wooden. Walton and the other star recruits, plus famous seniors and members of national championship UCLA teams, were anxious to get started. But first, John Wooden says, “Men, this is how you put your shoes and socks on.” Some of the returning players had been through this before; no matter - they were going to learn it again.
Walton, the country's top-recruited player that year, thought “WHAT!!!???!!! We're top players! We don't need this!"
But learning to tie shoes properly was vital to Wooden. It meant star players would never get a blister which would keep them from playing. The team can’t be its best unless everyone’s able to play.
John Wooden is arguably the greatest coach of all-time, regardless of sport yet he never talked about winning. Wooden taught his players to focus on doing their best; which meant practicing the fundamentals well. Like the proper way to lace up shoes. It was a John Wooden success lesson.
As a transfer student, he's having to do a bunch of stuff that he did as a freshman and he finds it annoying. I do too. I understand why the university is asking but a lot of it can be classified as CYA stuff and a kid with his record ought to be able to "place out" of at least some of it. I agree with him that the "Understanding Alcohol" course is a waste of his time. He does not need it and he's done something very similar already. And, for goodness' sakes, he lived in the Wellness dorm at UVM as a freshman - they weren't allowed to drink alcohol in the dorm, or smoke pot, or have paraphernalia around, or alcohol related posters, souvenirs, what have you.
I have no wish to start a fight, but, I think one reason I view this stuff differently from you, OPK, and you - jk, is that I'm the one that has always had to fill out the school forms, every year, for all of my kids. Is my son old enough that he ought to be taking care of this stuff himself? Sure. But so is my husband, and when it comes to making sure official forms get filled out and requirements are met and deadlines don't get overlooked - all of that stuff falls to me. All of it. So, it's not just my son's time that is being wasted, it's mine. One time I made my husband fill out one of the wanker school forms and he did it wrong. I had to get another form from the school and fill it out properly, so, that was just more work for me. Perhaps you are the form filler outer in your families, and if so, then by all means compare John Wooden's craziness to this busy work, but if you aren't . . .
I was just trying to raise a factoid that some might find interesting. No more and no less. Since my effort obviously was not taken in the manner intended, I will leave it at that and apologize that i did not articulate it properly. Mods, feel free to delete my posts on the topic.
My efforts in the kitchen were satisfying today and helped me to start really getting my brain around the impending start of a very weird new school year.

I posted about lawnmowers.
No apologies needed! I've actually always enjoyed that story. My response was not taken in the manner intended either. Normally, I'd find the story of John Wooden making Bill Walton tie his shoes amusing, but, I'm super annoyed at having to make my son watch a video about washing his hands so that he can pick up his room key. He's annoyed by it too. And yeah, I've got to make him watch it. He won't do it on his own.
Oh and W&M just sent out the announcement that they have to watch the hand washing video today, it has to be done by Friday, I'm helping him pack tomorrow because he's leaving on Wednesday, so, in addition to everything else I'm doing, including monitoring the website that will post his Covid 19 test result, I know have to make sure he watches a handwashing video. AAHhhhh!!! It's really not the same as John Wooden.
