Falling back, ensures I'm in bed by 9 PM.
Speaking as another Duke friend of yours, get those tickets asap. A complete freaking blast of a show. Sheer joy. Take a look at seats in orchestra row M on the sides. There's no row in front of those side seats and it's perfect when the music demands that you dance.
David Byrne was jaw dropping good. He was obviously delighted with the roars of the audience.
Hawaii Thursday!
It has begun...
Basketball season must be here, I spotted the first “Jay Bilas Sucks” posts of the year. It’s like new buds in springtime.
Last night's outcome makes today much nicer in Jayhawk country.
I have started an online Diplomacy game with some local friends. We're local but we're still playing online because - Diplomacy. I haven't played it since the '90s and I've kinda forgotten how. Anybody here ever play that game? I'm France. If you remember any great strategies for the French, do tell.

There is now a single thread about two things I hate.
Winner, winner, chicken dinner?
Cancer SUCKS!
That is all.
Sigh, the idiocy resumes...
Just saw Joker with SonPK, really enjoyed it. Much different than what I was expecting.
Joaquin Phoenix is amazing, and the directing is startling.
I watched a movie about dogs and cars this afternoon. One of my cats spent the entire time curled up on my chest.
What was that on JFs head the other night? Let nature take its course.

Sounds like a zip code.
I go away for months but this remains. Some things never change. Good.
Mojo rising!
Snowing hard.
Was having lunch with my son yesterday on an outdoor patio. Had on a Duke hat. Thermals on today though.
Some guy was eavesdropping on our convo while we caught up on scores, rankings, general sports blather (I really have a offbeat relationship with my son) and as he got up to leave he stopped at our table to say he enjoyed our banter but he could never pull for Duke because he was a hole graduate. Then he touched my on my shoulder and I groaned and asked for antibacterial spray.
Should I file charges?
Cold here but not as cold as predicted
Mid teens here. Brrrrrr
Siiigggghhhhh.
Can someone go out and pick me up a break, please?

21st Amendment brewed a pop tart beer that was quite tasty.

In my younger days, I had friends introduce me to Frosted Flakes with Coors Light instead of milk.
Not something I’d care to revisit today. At the time it was pretty tasty.
I guess it was my turn to be the party pooper.
Don't be so hard on yourself Ymo.
As the CEO of Life of the Party, Inc. it's not all it's cracked up to be.
They may not go with everything, but PopTarts do make the world go 'round.
Against opponents a combined 7-11 going in to today's games. A college football fan can only take so much.
There was just a showdown between the FedEx truck and the Amazon Prime van in my cul de sac. Glad it didn't turn vicious.
I love my church family. Last Sunday I asked for people to help rake a member's yard. (He entered Hospice care that day.) I had 3 people say they would help and hoped others would step up. Today, 14 people including 2 of their neighbors, ages 4 to 77, fulled 53 bags with leaves. We put some bags in neighbor's yards and are hoping they all get picked up. If any are left when I take dinner over tomorrow night, I'll farm them out to other member's yards.
For the most part, I'm able to mulch my leaves with the lawn mower to clean up the yard.
Fortunately (?), I have a builders pit sinkhole in my back yard. In go the leaves.
I live in a townhouse/condo so I don't have to rake leaves. I don't think I have raked leaves before this past Sunday in 30 years.
One could argue that letting a large portion of the leaves decay on their own might be the more ecologically friendly answer.
If they are so thick they might kill the grass, probably not the choice most people would take. At least they left the house to go to a compost center and not a landfill. Our county requires yard waste to be in brown paper yard waste bags and a separate pickup for them.
The Simply White Cheddar Cheetos are soooo damn good.
Maple creme Oreos were better than I was expecting, but weren't all that.
I honestly cannot remember the last time I had an Oreo cookie. So many, many calorie laden treats that have fallen away into the mists of time. It's very sad.
On another topic, I am going to do my level best to not buckle under the looming holiday onslaught.
Maybe I'll even smile and be joyful.
I...am...really...going...to...try.
Just got tix for David Byrne’s show on Broadway a few days after Christmas. Giddy.
Last concert-like thing I saw on Broadway was Jerry Garcia’s acoustic/electric run in 1987.
And — a Duke friend who was with me then is joining me for the show.
Merry Christmas to me!
Awesome, OPK!
I regret not going to see Springsteen while he had his show there.
Good for you OPK. It's going to be a pure blast. I'm still laughing at the do si do that I did with a German guy during the show.
I can't wait to hear your review.
PS, it's going to win a Tony. Hands down.
Every review, personal friend or press, has been phenomenal.
Trying not to learn too much in advance, want it to all be a surprise. Huge Talking Heads fan, know some of his solo stuff but not so much.
Stop Making Sense is genius and I understand that some sensibility (of sorts) is in this experience.
Jacked.
I think it's also the best theater venue on Broadway. Renoed a couple of years ago and very clean and comfortable.
Buy your swag before the show. It will be jammed afterwards.
5 pounds away from my annual weight loss goal. If it weren't for the upcoming holidays I would say that is obtainable...
I just know what I like in wine - not sure I could describe anything.
Not sure if this works, but here is the thread: https://forums.dukebasketballreport...highlight=wine
That is an old thread.
Woohoo!

Hopefully, they don't last 13 days in a row.
I need to remind myself to stay off the main page for a while.

This is about the other men’s ball sport going on right now.
Yeah, it's no big deal -- just spending a lot of energy on what I see as two or three pretty pointless arguments. And to be fair, those on the other side of them could rightly say the same about responding to my posts.
So -- pop tarts.
I learned two important lessons last night making gravy:
1. Measure out the corn starch, don't try to just "shake a bit" into the pan.
2. Chicken broth can help cure things when you ignore lesson 1 above.
Will start gearing up the mashed potatoes after Thanksgiving, will start shipping the first full week in December. Anyone who wants some should get their orders in early. Look forward to your gravy as always, a perfect combination.
Great culinary minds, etc, etc...gravy stock simmering away.
Tomorrow will be pecan toasting for chocolate pecan pie, pumpkin pie, brussels peeling, sweet potato baking for yes, gooey boozy marshmallowy casserole, cornbread baking for stuffing and... a new entrant into the mix, caramelized onion soup with a sprinkle of toasted pumpkin seeds and blue cheese.
Gosh, I may be a wanker for saying this but I sure love my own cooking.
I think Whitney Houston said it best, "Learning to love your own cooking, it is the greatest love of all."
Or something like that.

I baked pork roasts in chicken broth last night. Then a bit of flour, all good. Meant to shake a touch of corn starch in, and, well — I had a paste.
Broth smoothed it out a bit, but it was pretty poor consistently-wise. Probably should have whisked 9t but did not want to scratch the pan.
My gravy game needs work. Better at a demi-glacé.
Gravy. I make it every year because no one else will even attempt it. And . . . it's hit or miss. Sometimes we like it and sometimes we don't. It's one of our Thanksgiving traditions at this point - will Mom's gravy be any good? If it isn't, everybody just puts extra butter on their mashed potatoes.
Shut the heck up and get busy on those dishes!
May I refer you to Julia Child's turkey broth recipe and gravy studies?
No one, anywhere on this wonderful Planet Earth, can top my gravy or pie crust or gumbo.
You might say I'm a polymath. I couldn't possibly disagree with you.

I need to clean out and trash things.
But destruction can be so much fun.
Coming home from the movies last night, I saw an armadillo in our driveway. That’s a first.

Damn, that was tasty and fun.
I was shocked to see a national map showing feral pig populations throughout the US a few days ago, was astounded to see part of southeast Vermont mentioned...then found this:
https://www.ourherald.com/articles/f...s-in-randolph/
I guess two pigs isn't very many, but they're like mice, there's no such thing as one or two (eventually), there are hundreds.
I've got you beat in quantity (mice, voles, moles, baby rabbits, frogs, snake, and salamander) but not in size. The deer couldn't get out on its own on the steps? All the animals I've had issues with weren't big enough to get up the steps and side. I assumed I've had lots of other animals in that were just able to clamber out.
A few years ago, I drained my “cement pond” in order to repaint. When doing this, it is necessary to let it dry a few days before painting. Each morning, I would go outside to find various snakes trapped at the bottom of my empty pool. Fortunately, all were of the non-venomous varieties, and I assisted them in getting out. It made me wonder if possibly venomous kinds might also be swimming in my pool at night. Kinda put an end to my midnight swims unless I turned on the lights to check it out first.
I haven't been in a cement pond in a decade.
CANCER SUCKS!
The world lost a wonderful man overnight. He is out of pain and leaves a legacy of love and faith.
I'm sorry DinK.
My condolences, DinK
Sending you my condolences, DinK.
Had to mow the lawn this weekend.
First December 2019 post in this thread.
And we used to call ourselves PWs.
That thread about what have you done this decade makes me think of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer sells his stories to J. Peterman...
60% of all charities I’ve given money to in the last decade sent me a piece of mail this weekend. I expect the other 40% today and tomorrow.
I’m not a big celery eater. I buy it maybe once a year when I have dressing/stuffing at Thanksgiving. But even then I can only use about 1/2 the bunch. What do I do with the other half? Stir my Bloody Mary?
I didn't know that celery had a different use.
(actually: celery, green pepper, and onions are the "holy trinity" of Cajun cooking -- might want to find a nice warm gumbo recipe for cold days ahead).
Did I know what it meant when I did it?
Snowy morning.
Modern update: toast the flour in a hot enameled cast iron pan. Stir constantly, and I mean constantly. Lowers the amount of oil/fat in recipe. Add it to the rest of the cooked down vegetables and andouille mush it all around and then the liquid and the browned skinless chicken or whatever.
Get outta here with the sassafras. That's just wrong. Cooked down okra is de rigueur.
Keep working on it. Some young people call me cool when I put that plate of gumbo down in front of them. Maybe they mean being fed is cool but I'll take it.

Time to home in on the menus and my various fashion choices for the holidays...which will consist mostly of tasteful Duke attire.
I could use a good brownie, but I’m a no go on hash brownies...
Now you've got me focused on the brownies. Haven't made them in ages but for the upcoming holiday I'll break out the old school from scratch batch.
I keep looking for that James Beard award in the mail but they must have the zip code messed up.
It has been downhill ever since they implemented that Zip + 4 stuff. And don’t get me started on my Boston area mail issue...
It's been downhill ever since the topography started sloping off.
Durham mail is the worst.
Or did you mean Durham ball?
I guess as long as it isn’t the Durham Bell...
Sometimes like just stinks...
Can you vaguebook in the LTE? Someone who used to post here regularly has offended me on FB. I shouldn't let it get to me but I find that it I have. I'm mad but trying very hard not to either get defensive or, even worse, go into attack mode. Ignoring is the best strategy. Trying to ignore by venting here. Thanks.

I overlooked the previous posts by Ymo and Bostondevil, sorry.
It infuriates me when morons act like morons.
Even at my advanced age I get the urge to smack people in the head.
But smacking them in the head may make one feel better.
Yes, well, Pete Carroll used to coach the Pats, so . . . But really - why did you gift the Steelers? That's just wrong.
Tom Brady is not the worst human being to ever play professional sports, but, for the record, I don't do much defending of Bill Belichick. That said, Belichick will outcoach Pete Carroll every time.
/also kidding
//thank goodness we have Duke basketball in common - the only sports team that really matters
Weird it feels like one of my posts got deleted. So, I reposted and that one is gone too...
Sometimes "needless posts" get removed. From regular threads, anyway. Never from this thread...

I think the whole thread would disappear.
Except for you folks and your pop tarts fixations. And the rare Zima posts.
And my endless nagging about cleaning out your closets. Those are a public service.
My wife and I have started a new Sunday tradition.
We have made the show House Hunters into a drinking game. Drink every time someone says any of the following words/phrases:
Open concept
Space to entertain
Modern
Contemporary
A Sauvignon Blanc is the beverage tonight.
Mrs.PK and I are more boring. On Sundays, our drinking game is to watch C-SPAN and drink every time someone says:
I yield
Point of Order
The gentleman will suspend
The chair recognizes
Frappachino
Some come up more than others. But we get pretty damn drunk nonetheless.
I've got you all beat on the boring scale. Generally, I don't drink. Once a month and only one drink is generally my limit.
Years ago, when I was running 4-5 times a week, I drank a bit more. Then I realized I was undoing some of the road work with imbibing so I stopped.
Hmmm, now that I don't run at all maybe I should?
