I definitely don't wear an American flag or anything signifying I am American when I travel. I don't own anything overtly "patriotic" (that word has been stolen somehow). I even have some Canadian t shirts and sweatshirts. But I do introduce myself as American when traveling.

My best joke when I travel to Canada: "First off I would like to apologize for the political state of affairs in my country. I know we make y'all (this is important to add...Canadians like southern accents) feel like you live in a wonderful apartment perched right above a meth lab".

Tonight we fixed bacon, egg, avocado, and cheese toast (with potatoes on the side). At one point in the meal my wife, who takes medication that among other things reduces her appetite, put her fork down and said "That's it, I'm leaving bacon on the table." Hah hah, love it!

I got the reel mower out yesterday. Took over two hours to mow half the lawn. Rest will be mowed today.

Chalk it up to youth or me not being the sharpest tool in the shed, but it took me a while to realize that God bless it didn't mean things were going well.

50 minutes for the whole yard. The reel mower requires me to go over a spot up to 6 times to get it all. It provides a much better/appealing cut, so there is a reason. My yard is hilly and undulating which requires cutting it from different angles to get a consistent level of grass. The regular mower doesn’t go as low, so it is easier to have a single level cut, just much taller than what I get with the reel mower. The other issue I run in to is that once the grass starts growing it gets too thick for the manual reel mower. It gets super tough to push through the thick grass, so it will skip over spots. So you have to go over again to get the grass that got skipped over. If I had a powered reel mower(battery or gas) this part wouldn’t be an issue.

I like PLO but not very good at it.

If you like NLH they have pretty ripe daily tourneys and other properties (Venetian, Aria, Wynn) often have good tourneys running concurrently with the WSOP.

After two days, three states and ≈1000 miles I'm left pondering the following: If I'm passing you on your left, why you gotta speed up? If you speedup in the first place we won't be here.

Most miles you’ve driven in a day?

I’ve driven 700 miles through the middle. Feel like it took 12 hours.

My cat that has been requiring meds every 8 hours has been missing for 72 hours. I feel very divided about this development.

It has been a LONG time since I used a reel mower. They are better, but require more maintenance for the blades.

That's over two days. My longest single trip was the 699 mi from Duke Central Campus to Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg in 1999. The return trip two nights later seemed longer even though we split between three of us. I don't think any of use said a word for the first six hours.

I left Asheville at 4pm, got to Memphis. Slept 6 hours and was in Albuquerque the next night.

That's about 1500 miles.

That's a haul. I regularly (twice a year) make a "day trip" to Martha's Vineyard, 740 miles and you have a ferry to meet in Wood's Hole before it's last run of the day around 9 pm. Not 1500 miles by a long shot but driving 95 through NYC and CT can induce a psychotic episode. Boston gets a bad rap for drivers but CT drivers are the demon spawn of Satan and Flannery O'Connor's "creative" brain. Just a collection of freaks and sideshow misfits. I swear to God, don't stop for gas unless it's in Fairfield.

I did 875 with a trailer one day. East side of Atlanta to Topeka, KS. I will not ever be duplicating that feat.

985 miles straight thru with only stops for gas and munchies from Gastonia, NC to Bath, Maine. Did it to save one day of leave by checking in early at the shipyard. Checked into a motel before checking in at the shipyard and promptly fell asleep until the next day. No leave days saved.

1,207 miles from Cincinnati to San Antonio with 4 very pissed off felines. No stops longer than 15 minutes. 20 hours straight from old home to empty new home.

I do probably 4 or 5 drives a year of 700-850 miles. I have done a 950 miler this year from Asheville to Wilmington and then Wilmington to Tuscaloosa this year.

Oh, I'm certain to be awful. I haven't played a hand of poker for money in 6 years or so. When I still played semi-regularly, I had gone out to Vegas to play in an official WSOP event but other things transpired(very hot at the craps tables) and I never entered an event. I still have that on the list of things I need to do and when I go in a few weeks, I want to be able to cross that off my list with the lowest $ loss possible. There is a $800 NLH DeepStack event that starts earlier in the day before I get there but I think I'll still be too late. Then there is a $600 Mixed NLH, PLO event a couple days later. So, it looks like my donation will be to that event.

I ended up buying a battery powered reel mower for sale at $139 and finished off the lawn tonight. Definitely easier than the manual reel mower and maybe a few lbs. lighter. Only problem now is that I have three mowers in my shed.

Upstate NY in late 2019 was the last place I've been where everyone was following the rules of the road. Made for a nice predictable drive.

The Dailies at the WSOP are not bracelet events but are fun NLH if that suites better.

PLO is a beast onto itself.

My longest single drive was from west of Denver to Tuxedo, NC (south of Asheville), 1500ish miles. My starting point was some random property owned by Climax Molybdenum where I’d camped the night before. Minimal stops, back when it was all 55mph.

What used to be a feature (ability to drive long distances without needing to stop) has now been recoded and I have to stop every couple of hours. I've read too many stories about properly hydrating.

The longest tandem drive straight through I've done was 1,545 from McMinnville, OR to Fargo, ND. It was with House P's next door neighbor freshman year. He was in ROTC with me and we were both on the west coast. I flew up from LA and we drove the 24+ hours to Fargo. I drove about 4 of the 24 hours, it was his car. We crashed at his grandparents house for a day and a half then continued the drive. The second leg was from Fargo to Lexington, KY and the final leg to Durham..

One time in grad school, I took a spring break road trip from Greenville, NC to Key West by way of Columbus, OH.

Summer trip during college. Drove NC to Chicago to visit family, then to Seattle (and a ten day sailing trip with family there). Down to the Bay Area then back to NC. About 6 weeks on the road, mostly on the cheap, just camping. By “camping” just a sleeping bag on the ground.

Climax Molybdenum offered an easy, free place to camp. The name stuck with me.

I came to DBR last night to read about and comment on Booker’s performance in game four but got sidetracked on this thread and ended up going to the bookshelf and re-reading “A Good Man is Hard to Find.”* Wow. I’d forgotten a lot. On one of the story’s lighter notes, though, the grandkids reminded me of Walker and Texas Ranger from Talladega Nights!

Same company and at elevation, but not sure of the location. Somewhere not too far south of I-70 west of Denver is all I remember - a friend gave me directions. It did get well below freezing overnight in late June and had a glorious sunrise overlooking a lake.

you can get thru the school zones faster by passing the school buses.

One of our local municipalities has set up cameras in school zones to ticket speeders. No flashing school zone warning lights, just small, easily overlooked signs. They then mail tickets, with a statement saying no points issued if the fine is paid. It’s all about income for them, not safety.

It was still afternoon. Gila Bend (aka the Fan Belt Capital of the World) is in Arizona and on Pacific time in April. I was driving home to Phoenix after Easter weekend in San Diego. My kids’ Episcopal school always had Easter Monday off which is another reason I wasn’t thinking about schools being in session or active school zones. I was still about 75 miles from home, with Phoenix rush hour traffic to navigate, my daughter to be dropped at gymnastics, and my sons to be fed before game time!

(My kids now on the east coast still miss live sports starting times in the west- especially MNF and being able to roll out of bed on Saturdays and watch college football in their pajamas!)

Funny. I got one of these tickets in the mail last month. Tallulah Falls? Of course, I wasn't even in the vehicle (my wife was driving), and it was a Civil Violation or something, not a moving violation.

The funny (?) part was that the school zone speed limit is the same as the non-school time speed limit. Odd, right? I thought the point was to have a slower speed limit during school times. Who knows.

Regardless, my wife was guilty as charged, so we paid the ticket online (managed by a firm in Chattanooga, TN, strangely enough) and moved along.

The Tallulah corridor on either side of the gorge for several miles is a notorious speed trap. Basically keep yourself glued to the posted limit anywhere between Clayton and Clarkesville.

You don’t swing you’ll never homer. If you’re a bad all player you’ll also look silly a lot.

One of the best features is a giant patch of thyme that now constitutes about a third of my lawn...it grows horizontally, with excellent purple flowers, what's no to like? The green stuff, whatever it is, grows, and I mow it, end of story.

I love the smell of gardenias. We had a patch of mint in the backyard of the house I grew up in, just outside the sliding glass door off the family room. I loved the way that room would smell right after one of my brothers mowed the lawn.

For a variety of reasons, I was never allowed to mow the lawn as a teenager. Then it was a sore point because my brothers got extra allowance when they mowed the lawn. Now - I do yardwork, including mowing the lawn, because I don't want to.

Have to go to a fancy pants wedding in a few weeks. They requested men wear tuxedoes (good luck with that*) but dark suits will allegedly suffice.

What to do? I truly have not worn a suit in about 25 years, but I have some beauts in the back of the closet. I pulled out the nicest one and lo and behold, it essentially fits, though the waist, unsurprisingly, is a bit tight.

* for a major wedding anniversary, Mrs Womble and I went to what was perhaps the nicest restaurant in San Francisco, Gary Danko (this was about 10 years ago). Great place. On their home page they made a modest request that men wear a sportjacket...so we get there, and of course half the guys in there are tech bros wearing t-shirts and backwards ball caps (I like informality as much as anyone, but eating in a baseball hat is pretty rurnt).

the bears are awake around here, and one has been raiding a neighbor's trash, even though he only puts out his bins in the morning as he goes to work, not overnight.

Today, the bear left a trinket in the middle of our road which has literally stopped traffic...no one has run thru Turdzilla yet, but it's only a matter of time, it's right in the middle of the road.

That made my mother decide that I shouldn't never go anywhere near a lawnmower ever. After that, when I realized that my economic opportunities were more limited than my brothers because they could always just mow then lawn when they needed extra cash, I was denied that access by the brothers, "Hey! No way! That's how WE can supplement our allowance. You go find something else." None of the chores I did were considered worthy of extra compensation except for defrosting the freezer. Yeah, "equal pay for equal work" sounds fair but it really, really isn't.

My mom had a bunch of gardenias around our deck in the 80s. They were usually quite pleasant in bloom, but there were a few times they were so odoriferous it was overwhelming and gave you a feeling of being in a house of ill repute. They eventually succumbed to a very cold snap one winter.

My thoughts are not likely to be in sync with most of the rest of the opinions. Brilliantly acted scene and the dialog in that particular scene was brilliant. That said, the scorpion thing at the top of the episode widely and wildly missed the mark of how the character of Tom we have had for four seasons would have behaved - that was so far out of left field that it made me angry. Tom doing something like that to Greg? Sure. To Shiv when they have made up? To quote Gerri, "Nope. Nope." And since I think the writers put that in just so they could have the Tom/Shiv scene at the end - it diminishes the power of the final scene for me.

Flashback to my rookie year at my very very large employer some decades ago.
