Temps down to -10 tonight, wind which of -30, all visitors are welcome.
If you plan to go through any tolls and do not have a Sun Pass, be prepared to pay 3x the toll a month or so down the road. FDOT is doing away with cash toll plazas, so they take a picture of your car and send you a bill. Plus a service charge. So they are basically screwing out-of-staters by triple-charging them tolls. I had to deal with this in the fall.
thanks...i shall be flying. I had that same issue in Boston in October, I mistakenly ended up on the Mass Pike for a couple miles*, no toll booth, but the next week I got a bill for a dollar. I imagine sending that and processing my payment cost them at least twice that..

I don’t want to alarm anyone but 2022 is the year Soylent Green took place.
If it weren’t for my horse, I wouldn’t have spent that year in college.
Hey y'all! I wanted to take a minute to share an exciting new project of mine. My apologies for the shameless plug, but I'm opening a new natural smoothie bar and I was hoping y'all, being my (virtual) friends, would be willing to support the project and help it get off the ground.
Since this is meant to be a place where everyone can feel healthy, empowered, and encouraged, I'm calling it "Smoothies of the People."

Flight home from Nashville was not cancelled. It was on time and (mostly) uneventful. The flight attendants got on the speaker to remind everyone that wearing a mask while on board was a federal requirement. They did it a again a few minutes later. Then the pilot made an announcement that mask wearing was a federal requirement adding that the flight was expected to take 2 hours and 20 minutes. Then, finally, the pilot got on again and said that everyone on the flight would be following the federal requirement and that if there was anyone who could not wear a mask, for whatever reason, for 2 hours and 20 minutes, the door was still wide open and that all passengers would either be putting on a mask right then or getting off the plane. At that point a man stood up, thanked his fellow passengers for their patience and apologized for the delay and then he GOT OFF THE PLANE!!! I mean, OK, I'm glad he made that choice instead of causing a worse incident, but wow. What an idiot. This was a direct flight TO BOSTON!!! No idea what someone who couldn't bring themselves to wear a mask on an airplane thought he was going to be doing once he got to Boston.
The figure skating was worth trip, Nashville, not so much. Nashville may be even worse at dealing with snow than Durham. I have decided to start rating places I visit on a 1 - 10 scale. I will grant that I probably saw Nashville at it's worst, but it only rates a 4 for now.
Interesting. Wonder how often that happens. Both the pilots’ insistence and the man’s reticence. I’ve gotten the impression that a lot of the conflicts popping up in the news are a result of half-a**ed enforcement that has pushed the conflict down to the passengers.
Well, for a while there going to the Final Fours was a pretty good bet to see us playing. Those were the days.
While I am down on Nashville in the main (having witnessed first-hand its issues during a multi-month stay), I will not criticize it for its snow removal results, because ... well, there are just too many things broken about Nashville to worry about something that only happens a couple times a year. The main roads are not majorly affected by snow because they are dysfunctional at the best of times, so how much worse could snow make them? Traffic will only get worse, because Nashville is still on a growth spurt and refuses to consider any kind of mass transit solution. One of the most advertised modes of entertainment here is "transpotainment" (that's a "real" word here), where open-sided buses (some of them pedi-buses) full of screaming inebriates ply through the downtown streets causing noise issues for those that rent or live in the area. I won't belabor the point ... but when it came to trying to decide where to move to while staying at my MIL's house in Nashville, we decided on a minimum of 60 miles from the city. Of course, that puts us smack dab in the middle of Trump country ... but that's a whole nother issue.

I'm not criticizing them for snow removal results either. The city did reasonably well with that. What made me mentally score Nashville as below average has more to do with the parts that are, to borrow your term, broken. The city's priorities were on full display and from my point of view, those priorities are wankered.
Single digits today.
My best friend from college was recognized in DC a couple of years ago for her founding and running a program in Nashville that works with homeless children in the Metro area. She is a social worker - her husband is a song writer.

I need to tell another Myrtle Beach story but I'll do it here.
Some of the funniest "cultural exchanges" I have seen are during the Myrtle biker weeks when hordes of bikers looking to party at "Suck, Bang, Blow" run into the golf course retirement crowd. My parents live not far from Myrtle so we get down several times a year. One of those times, we ended up behind a gentleman and his well-derriered lady astride his crotch rocket, which was blaring rap music. The lady was wearing a thong bikini and so most of her ample backside was exposed and she was dancing at each stop. It was 2 PM.
They pulled up next to this older couple in a Cadillac at a stop light. Those poor people were doing everything they could to look but not look. Unfortunately, the lady caught them and when she saw them, she pointed at them, yelled something unintelligible and started vigorously twerking and yelled at them some more. The older couple stared straight ahead and you could just sense their desperation for the light to turn green.
It was positively delightful. I love Myrtle. It knows what it is and leans into it. You can have a family friendly time but you can also have one of the messiest most chaotic times in America there.
Thanks for sharing!
When is your trip Ymo?
You are a good son. I had planned to go to the January 22nd game in Cameron to say my own personal goodbye to Coach K, but, my parents and I have decided together that we do not want to risk contact at this point. I'm not going. My last chance is now the February 7th game. If the world was in better shape, I would regret the missed opportunity more, but given where we are, I'm not particularly disappointed.
Cold here. Making shrimp creole tonight.
Anyone else ever walked onto a full elevator with a friend, then turned to him and loudly said, "Hold on, I have a bad feeling about this one", and then gotten off before the doors closed?
We're still going, but wearing N95s and leaving them on the entire game. Feels much less stressful w/o concessions. Also, have been seeing quite a few people around us now wearing N95s. And the ushers are cracking down on nose-hanger-outers. So, I have actually felt OK there.
It's supposed to wintry mix all day here on Sunday, and I'm already drooling lustily about the things I'm going to do in the kitchen all day.
Russia did not classify beer as an alcoholic beverage until 2011.
Red Beans and Rice
1 pound dry Red kidney Beans
3 bay leaves
7 cups water
1 pound kielbasa sausage (sliced)
1 ham hock
1 celery stalks (diced)
1 large yellow onion (chopped)
1 red bell pepper (chopped)
4 cloves garlic (minced)
1 tablespoon dried parsley flakes
3 teaspoons Slap Ya Mama Creole Seasoning, plus more to taste
1 bunch green onions (diced)
several dashes hot sauce, to each bowl
8 cups cooked rice (to serve)
In an extra-large stockpot, add red kidney beans. Fill water to top then place in fridge. Let beans soak at least 10-12 hours. I soak them overnight.
Drain water from beans. Stir occasionally.
In a large stockpot, add diced celery, green pepper, garlic and diced onions. Brown over medium heat in oil (until onions are translucent), stirring occasionally, about 4 minutes. Add beans, bay leaves, parsley and 7 cups water. Bring to boil.
Reduce heat to low and simmer covered, about 8-12 hours, stirring occasionally. Beans should thicken in the pot. You may need to add a little water the longer you cook.
With 30 minutes remaining, slice the sausage and brown in a separate pan (you can skip browing and) add to pot. Add more or less Creole Seasoning according to taste preference. Continue to cook until the beans are tender and creamy. TIP: The texture should not be soupy or watery. If it is, simply keep cooking until the mixture is very thick and almost paste-like.
Remove from the heat. Remove bay leaves. Use a potato masher to crush most of the beans. Pro tip: consistency should be almost like a gravy and not soupy at all.
Serve with cooked rice. Spoon beans into a dish. Add chopped green onions. Add several dashes of hot sauce (I like Cholula, but any hot sauce works). Serve with rice in the same bowl.
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 6-12 hours
Total Time: all freaking day but not a lot of prep time
Yield Servings: a bunch
Just Julia Child's recipe basically, except that I'm gonna streamline things a little bit by skipping the simmering of the bacon, not swapping back and forth between oven and stovetop, and not cooking the pearl onions separately (in my food, cook the hell out of the onions, or don't put them in there at all).
This originally started out with those two substitutes. I think slap your mama is better and I've liked kielbasa more than andouille. But those are fine substitutions. This recipe is years worth of tinkering. When I first started making this I put the sausage in early and the sausage loses its sausage consistency. The key is to mash the beans up so that it isn't soupy, but has almost a gravy consistency. I use a potato masher. The actual masher and not the German grenade from World War II.
Well, my alma mater lost, but I am OK with that.
I've seen some funny things in Reynolda Gardens.
You win some, you lose some.
I see people mess up dominant/dominate quite often recently. I don't think I ever saw anyone mess those up until about the last 5+ years or so. Is that an autocorrect thing or have people always messed that up and I just didn't notice?
I want to dominate in killed threads. I think I have a shot. (Really? No, not really...)
Do all you guys get advertisements for "growth" and hair loss, or do I need to cover the camera on my phone?
I don't know what you saw, but it probably was.
Has anyone not named Friedrich or Gűnther ever worn a banana hammock actually?
After 9 1/2 years of faithful service, my dryer vent hose perished today. I guess I should have replaced it at year 7 like I did the water lines to the washer.
Maybe it will see a second life as a banana hammock.
I have never seeing a guy wearing one of those who wasn't above the age of 65 and suffering from dunlap's disease.
if I ever find the guy who designed my dryer vent pathway to the great outdoors, I will assault him. Instead of going straight out thru the wall to the outside, it instead drops down thru the floor, into the basement bathroom (inside a dropped ceiling) then exits from there. Makes no sense at all...you need a circus contortionist to replace the thing...
Many feel this is a huge no-no. Local guy wrote a homeowner column for years and would rant about this. The problem (according to him, and I think he's right) is that your attic is designed to be cold...and the warm air running thru the vent will create condensation and you'll get dripping water in the attic, which would harm your insulation among other things.
I keep my bananas in a bowl. Sometimes there are other fruits in there too.
i'm allergic to bananas
Speaking of oranges, anyone familiar with Sumo citrus (https://sumocitrus.com/)?
I only learned about them last year, but they are fantastic and I became hooked! Unfortunately, they have a limited availability of Jan-April and I haven't been able to find them in stores yet. Not sure what's up but I was really looking forward to Sumo season and it's quickly passing by.
At my house, my dryer is upstairs, and the vent runs upward to the attic, where it USED to go to a vent in the roof. Two years ago, I had a new metal roof put on, and unbeknownst to me, the roofer removed the vent, covered the hole, and simply tacked the vent hose up to the ceiling to vent out the ridge vent. I avoid my attic except when absolutely necessary (had bats up there once), like a year ago when I had to replace the smoke alarm battery. That is when I noticed my vent hose lying on the floor of the attic just venting away into the air. It had come undone. That is how I learned the roofer had done what he did. I called him, and he said that venting to the ridge vent was acceptable (it really is not) and he tacked it up again.
I know that the old way wasn't really ideal, either, b/c the vent needs to going downward at least at the end so condensation can run down out of the vent and not back down the hose. But being upstairs, where else can it go, especially without a ton of demo? That is why I wanted to run it across the attic floor and down through the soffit. Otherwise, I have no idea what to do, unless I drop it straight down to the crawlspace and then who knows where?. Also, it is in the middle of the house, not near an outside wall. The one thing I did not like about the house when I bought it was the closet upstairs hallway W/D setup.
Attics can be designed to be warm. It just needs to be handled accordingly.

Classically wild and imprecise winter weather forecast for Atlanta on Sunday, but either way, we shall dine on delicious stewed cow at my house. I just hope the power doesn’t go out.
Most hated tv character of all time? It's a long shot, probably an 11 seed, but I think Peggy Hill could make it to the Final Four.
Nice. I'd put Joffrey in my final four, too. A lot of people hated Skyler White but, you know, that's just wrong. Janice and AJ Soprano are up there for me, too. I didn't watch it back in the day but the few Friends episodes I've seen are pretty atrocious and most of the characters are pretty annoying.
Major Frank Burns?
Urkel for me.
Skyler is fine by me. Best show ever, and she filled a perfect role (and very well-acted by Anna Gunn). Now, Marie Schrader, I couldn’t stand her really until she came into her own the last two half-seasons. Then she was fantastic IMO.
Old Ferret Face? I liked Larry Linville much more than Charles Winchester/David Ogden Stiers personally.
But with both, I can see it. I think both characters were intentionally annoying to some degree, so I look at it as the characters fulfilling their function.
There are a couple different tournaments here. Most hated ( intentionally or not) and most annoying (unintentionally).
Many of the hated characters I listed absolutely did their jobs but boy what a bunch of turds.
I almost can’t watch traditional sitcoms with laugh tracks without becoming physically annoyed so I guess the second tournament will be heavily seeded with characters in those shows.
The Nanny
Any of the Real Housewives
To be clear, I wasn't voting for Frank Burns, I was just suggesting that character as a possible winner. Where is this tournament taking place anyway?
Lots of actors on long running sitcoms get typecast forever. It happens with long running dramas too.
Aw, what's wrong with Peggy? She had her moments. Funny you mention Joffrey, I started rewatching GoT recently and yeah after the episodes I just watched he's got to be on there. Could run away with it honestly, although I think I an annoying character gets hot and goes on a run to win the whole thing.
Hard to argue.
Just an auto-bid 16 seed probably, but I'll nominate Kim from Scrubs.
I only like the first three seasons of M*A*S*H. MAYBE the fourth and first half of the fifth, but really after Henry and Trapper left, it went downhill.
MASH is one of my favorite shows. Probably more for the opening scene than anything else. Even though I'm sure it wasn't filmed in Korea, it reminds me if Saturday mornings waking up to helicopters flying by and the hill reminds me of the hills by our company compound.
Well. The law is being laid down in 20 minutes with my coworkers the douche-canoes. There will be wailing, gnashing of teeth, rending of garments. Wish I could live stream.
Zoom has a record function.
