It is getting hot in here...
Brutal storm here
And it looks like the Atlantic hurricane season is starting to ramp up.
70° and overcast in Asheville, yet every building I've been in today has had the AC blasting.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture doesn't hold up very well.
I just want a break in the 100+ degree days.
Pouring rain in Indianapolis the Monday after Andrew Luck retires. Appropriate.
Bang energy drinks are no joke.
I haven't had anything energy drink wise since drinking Red Bull and vodka over a decade ago.
Anyone else work with any "very loud typers"? That poor keyboard...
I miss the old clicky ibm keyboards...

I have a HP chicklet style keyboard. Not much room for crumbs to get in there and pretty quiet.
This post would be better with a link! I'm using a Trackman Marble at home: https://www.logitech.com/en-us/produ...arble-business
And this at work: https://www.kensington.com/p/product...h-scroll-ring/
Alabama and Georgia this weekend. I may not be able to watch much this weekend.
This is my mouse at work: LINK TO REALLY COOL TRACKBALL. I’ve used some version of that mouse for years and I love it, but everyone else (especially IT) hates it.
At home I have a MacBook, though, and I’m good with the touchpad on it.
EDIT: I hate ergonomic keyboards. I seriously think my hands are too small for them. My arms are also at weird angles. No thank you.
Vegas is still Vegas.

I also have an older wired version of that trackball.
Sorry, it was a trac ball:

Went to watch the inspection of the house my sister and brother-in-law are in the process of buying. If anyone is looking for a home inspector in the KC area, I would highly recommend him. A very thorough and informative young man. Highlight of the day - looking out and see 11 wild turkeys in the back yard. Thanksgiving dinner, perhaps? :D
There's just something women like about a pickup maaaaaan
Anyone have a good recipe for alligator? Can pick some up but looking to find the best way to cook it first.
I’m going to watch a lot of college football tomorrow but my two teams are currently a combined -55.
For all those that sent good vibes, offered prayers, or good karma, I want to offer a very humble thank you.
Via acquisition, my job that I was very happy with came to an end last Friday, and the good vibes I was asking for was for a job interview.
I received my written offer today, and accepted.
Thank you all, I appreciate your goodwill more than I can adequately express.
I may have successfully resisted the urge to buy a larger TV. I extended the wall mount 6" closer to my face...
72-9...stellar.
Still Sunday, feels like Monday.
My bias against men in tights movies is really based on too many Superman/Batman/Spiderman reprises during my lifetime.
I now have the ACC network.
I think I have it but haven't bothered to check yet.
Just finished the new Dave Chapelle special on Netflix 10/10.
Appears people are off their meds again...
I suddenly find myself blinded by a heavy metal kick. Like, I can't get enough of Black Sabbath and Megadeth and the like. This is quite out of character with regard to my traditional musical tastes, but I am enjoying it. My wife (and my hearing)? Maybe not so much...
Spending a week in care of a nine year old. A novelty for me.
I hate when you hear someone has passed away a month after the fact - and he was way too young. Didn't get to spend enough time enjoying his retirement. Sometimes, it just sucks.
For you both, I stumbled upon the following today:

Nice.
I actually have this one:

Don’t ask why.
Carpe Diem, my friends. Don’t make a bucket list, plan it and go.
I hear carp are good fish to eat. I haven't had much fish lately, an occasional sushi session. I'm more in to shellfish.
Seafood is gross! All of it!
Strange, no thread for mountain music.
My brother-in-law claims that I like both kinds of music - country and western. :D
Sheer genius, glorious, goosebump raising perfection.

Anyone have any Yadkin Valley wine recommendations?
I'd rather not start a ymmmmmmmm, wine thread.
I can't remember the last time I had a Friday this crappy. At least it's Friday, or I'd really be in a rancid humor.
Always awkward when someone gets terminated. I'm about to go "taken a phone call" so that I can avoid the awkwardness.
Countdown to Craziness is next month.
The off-season is almost over!
Ugh, I will not watch the Big Ten network.
Put the kayak on the rack, headed to the river before it gets hot as blazes. Upper ‘60’s now, nice. Just need Sunrise.
It is Zeptember and the Christmas stuff is out.
They couldn’t wait until Rocktober?
*Trying not to get too PPB but this is what happens when you threaten to tariff stuff. And they’ve got to put it somewhere.
So, my parents went on a cruise to Newfoundland...
Dad passed out twice this am. Paramedics did an EKG and checked his vitals. Everything checked out normal.
Still very scary to get a call from a crying mother right when it happened.
I had a similar cruise to Newfoundland (on the way to Northern Europe) courtesy of Uncle Sam’s Yacht Club. Played tag with a hurricane up the East coast of the USA, leaving ports early to try to stay ahead of it. Somewhere in my attic are a bunch of pictures of a Guided Missile Cruiser acting like a submarine occasionally. Fun times. It was interesting to see which of the newbie sailors could throw up the most and farthest.
Not sure how my statements were partisan? They stake no position on the merits of tariffs and whether we should or should not be applying them.
An important thing for many of these Christmas items is not just when you order and are billed* but when and from where the goods are delivered or at least hit our shores. Customs duties/tariffs are due at that point(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Custom..._United_States). I didn't work with retailers, I have worked for manufacturers that supplied to distributors to retail and worked with other industry, some that were particularly seasonal. If ordering in advance of need can be balanced against tariff costs for materials, we would do it. But that obviously had to be weighed against the carrying cost of that inventory, the ability of suppliers to deliver before the tariff deadline, as well as others risks. If we could save money, we would. If shipping early and our customers would allow it, we would. Often times that depended upon the triggering mechanism for how the customer paid us. One large customer allowed us to pack their warehouse with materials, but they were not billed and obligated to pay(Net 30) until they actually picked the material so that it could be used in their process. "Okay, you'll let me store these goods in your warehouse which I've looked at and have minimal issues with regards to the safekeeping of my goods?"+ So, why not optimize truck and rail quantities, setup times on manufacturing processes, our own warehousing costs, etc.? Balanced with the risks of shrinkage, spoilage, changes in materials costs, etc. Simple b-school/supply chain stuff.
What did I observe today? A retailer who is putting out goods nearly 3 months in advance of when I expect they would normally sell them. I also saw some nice optimization of footprint. Some things that were likely domestically supplied(foodstuffs such as peanuts) had a reduced footprint. That says to me a couple things:
1) the carrying cost of that Christmas inventory is really low(likely facilitated by low interest rates**) relative to the gross margins on those items and
2) getting those Christmas items here even earlier than the now normal mid-October time frame that many of us consumers lament is of economic benefit to someone in the supply chain.
So, I'm not sure how, "this is what happens when you threaten to tariff stuff. And they’ve got to put it somewhere." is partisan? Maybe the use of threaten was wrong? I should have said this is when happens when you tariff stuff that did not have tariffs before or increase tariffs on items that already had them. Ultimately, all I saw from my vantage point was the supply chain reacting to a potential change in costs. You state, "Its display now is just the commercialization of the season." I agree wholeheartedly!
*Depends on how you are paying the bill also. Are you making upfront payment? Paying for raw materials in advance? Paying in full when it lands on US shores but generally in advance of your ability to see them? I never got too involved in those contract negotiations. But they were often long and complicated.
+ This practice did cause me to have to travel to Cape Girardeau, Missouri in a small 6 passenger commercial plane during the winter of '97. During a storm. One of the scariest flights of my life. Luckily, the error was on their part, not ours, as they did not follow the agreed to specifications for storage.
**Wait, did I just stake out another PPB position?
Dad's doing ok for now. They kept him at the hospital overnight and are keeping him again tonight. His blood pressure dropped again last night and they aren't sure why. Thanks to everyone for the prayers and good vibes!
Where have I been? In a funk. And I don't really feel like explaining why. At least not today.
In the ICU with Dad. Had to put a stent in, but he's feeling much better now. Should get to finally go home tomorrow. Thanks for the thoughts and prayers.
Chiming in!
That's a scary situation and I'm glad he will have a good outcome matty.
Who let the dogs out?
We return you to your regularly scheduled broadcast about nothing.
I do have 24 posts in that other thread.
To 1971 Trans Am or not to 1971 Trans Am, that is the question...

Where to vacation in November? St. Lucia is the leader in the clubhouse.
I've found Moscow Mules to be a delightful warm-weather cocktail. I might even go so far as to acquire a set of the proper copper cups...
And Mrs. Turk finds herself losing her taste for ...eer as well. She has been putting a sploosh of rum in those Bai coconut pineapple beverages you can buy at the store...
My group number is excused from jury duty tomorrow. Is it weird that I am kind of bummed out by this?
Today looks like the lasy sweltering day for a bit. Tomorrow's high is 15 degrees cooler. Sheesh.
Not at all. I think I would have the same reaction. Served on a jury once, and would not shy away from doing it again. It's nice that most places have advance notice to minimize the chance of sitting in the courthouse all day doing nothing.
By the way, what's the going rate for jury pay these days?
In Pennsylvania, the Commonwealth pays $9.00 for the first 3 days, and $25 per day beyond. We also get 0.17 cents per mile. How quaint.
For 3 days, I got a check for $87. No mileage.
One of the few benefits of getting old - no more jury duty. I guess they think we might not be around for a whole week, or at least can’t stay awake for a whole day of court.
I woke up this morning to find myself in a Crazy Zack's NMB t-shirt. Not uire what that means...
Sounds like that T-shirt has had a few experiences
My wife is going out of town for a long weekend starting today, so sign me up for a lot of Beanie Weenees and no-pants time.
Also - the Presidential Election thread is already starting to wonder if they might pass us by having 1000 more pages in the next 13-14 months. Bless their hearts.
I do read that thread some, from time to time, and I've posted a couple of comments, but, in the end, I have to admit, they collectively keep saying the same thing over and over and over again. It's boring. There just aren't enough different points of view to sustain interest.
We ended up enrolling my youngest son in boarding school for high school. He is going through some struggles that are fairly common among young teens who have survived childhood cancers and the big (high pressure) local high school was not going to cut it for him.
But that means I'm an empty nester 4 years before I thought I would be. Although not a completely empty nester because he comes home most weekends mostly to see his guinea pigs and to go to fencing but I'm happy for that. Best of both worlds really. Boarding is going to be good for him but coming home on the weekends will be too.
I hope he is settling into his new school situation. He deserves only happy things from now on. (As do you.)
Two years ago today, my cat Mason passed. I miss him.
Hawaii, the land of my people...
Someonenused the term petabyte at work yesterday. I decided I needed a chicken fajita pita after they said that. And I have ben callled a PITA on more than one occasion.
All football is getting fundamentally unwatchable. I think that's why God invented VCRs and DVRs and the interwebz. Half an hour on Saturday and Sunday after supper, and I see all I need to see, and know all I need to know, and I can spend my fall afternoons outside in the fresh air.
Football fills the necessary gap between when the Buccos turn into a laughingstock and basketball season starts.
I still watch the Chiefs when I can - it gives me good family memories of time spent at games with my father, one sister and her husband. However, church has taken a chunk of my watching time away. Left the house just before the end of the first half last weekend for youth group, listening to the last of the half on the radio, and the game was over before youth group ended. The Chiefs and Raiders were nice enough to not score again so the ending score was the same as the half time score. I just erased the last of the game from my DVR. Other NFL games are occasionally on the TV as background noise.
Same here - there is a lot of family history, so I will always keep an eye on the Steelers, but I won't plan my life around them.
(And congrats on your team's promotion from "Chefs" to "Chiefs!".)
They're probably my second favorite AFC team, perhaps just a notch ahead of the Chargers, and anyone who ever beats the Patriots.
(And part of that family history includes wagering with my brothers on the over/under on the number of people wearing Steelers logowear at Mass. Forgive us, Lord, for we are sinners...)
Well I'll watch Daniel Jones this Sunday but I'm too embarrassed to watch the Lions.
I have recurring traumatizing flashbacks.
Time to get some barbecue...
One way to not go 0-2 for the weekend is for one of your teams to have a bye week.
Just emptied 5 inches of rain from the rain gauge.
Yikes!
For us, after setting a 12 month record for total rainfall a few months ago (and that shortly after setting a calendar year record - it just kept coming!), we're about a month past our last real rain. And with no more rain in sight, I've been watering all around the house this weekend. Not so worried about our (paltry) grass, but the azaleas we relocated (they're not yet very resilient) and the new and old pachysandra.
-jk
Air fried chicken wings, then sauced and finished on the grill. SonPK happy, so I’m happy.
We could use a little rain here. Maybe not 5 inches, but 2-3" would work out well.
Boa noite...
Happy 70th birthday, Bruce Springsteen!
The local indie radio station played their picks of 70 songs this morning. Started my Monday off on the right foot.
https://thekey.xpn.org/2019/09/23/springsteen-2/
YMMV.
I think the varying mileage will come from the heavy bias to a couple albums at the top of the list. The list very much appears to be from someone in their late 50s at their youngest. While I recognize the brilliance of his early work and now prefer it, I still have a soft spot for some of the songs much lower down on the list.
And FWIW, they have some incorrect references...or maybe not. Definitely at least one that I saw immediately.
I agree. I sort of expected the classic rock tilt; although I doubt no one has "Incident" as high as #4; I guess it was only there to pair with "Rosalita" at #3...
Also, I wouldn't have restricted the list to just the studio albums; adding a few versions from the live albums would have freshened things up a bit.
(And I would have made another pass with the editing - #29 "She's the One" is on Born To Run, not USA.)
"For those scoring at home, and for those who are by themselves:"
Born To Run - 7 of 8 (excluding "Night")
Darkness - 7 of 10 (excluding "Factory", "Something in the Night", "Streets of Fire")
Born in the USA - 10 of 12 (excluding "Working on the Highway", "I'm Going Down")
Wild, Innocent - 6 of 7 (excluding "Wild Billy")
Greetings - 5 of 12
Tunnel of Love - 6 of 12
Nebraska - 4 of 10
The River - 9 of 20 (supporting my decades-long opinion that The River should have been pruned down to a single album!)
So that's 54 of the 70. Of the remainder, the highest-ranked is "Streets of Philadelphia" at #17.
I feel like "The Rising" and "Wrecking Ball" are the most under-represented, with only 2 songs each. I would have included two, maybe even three songs from each album over the lesser songs in "USA" and "River".
I suspect most people would have the same 50 or so songs, and the remaining 20 would be the fun ones to talk about.
