Random gratuitous post whoring going on right here.
How is it that both of my 2 credit classes, each separately, have twice the weekly reading of either of my 4 credit classes?
OPK, care to chime in?
LOL. I was dreading Con but the prof is pretty awesome. The class is meant for the evening students (8:10-10:10pm M/W), but 2/3 of the class is day students who specifically wanted to take this prof. He turns it into common current conversational language we can all understand & he's pretty clear. That means the curve will probably stink- over 100 students in this class (the room is PACKED).
Con scared me because I have so much difficulty reading the "old" cases, but he makes them understandable. AND he's not making us read Marbury v. Madison. Bonus points there.
(Then again I have problems with cases where judges & justices write to "hear" themselves or meet some imaginary word count... Scalia, I'm looking at you. Flowery and self-serving decisions don't do it for me- just get to the point already.)
Sports & Torts readings are off the chart... really bad (# of pages and cases per week).
Biz is pretty good so far- the prof is great at distilling the cases down to exactly what she wants us to know and the slides seem to be the frame of the outline, if not the outline itself.
Con law was one of my absolute favorites. Still is, to the extent my practice touches on it.
As far as judges -- Learned Hand is my favorite, for no other reason than the fact that his name was Learned freakin' Hand. Even better than my favorite baseball commissioner, Kennesaw Mountain Landis. (Although Shoeless Joe should be in The Hall)

I'd like to hear Scalia do this!
(True recording)
Side note: Heller was the main basis of our law review write-on competition last year. Ugggggghhhh 80 pgs of Scalia almost made me not write-on.
It was also the first case we read for Con this semester. Distilled to 12 pgs - only half were Scalia, and the other half was split between the 2 dissents. I liked this version sooooooo much better. :D
I had the honor of appearing (second chair) in the U.S. Supreme Court years ago, and have been there several times as a gallery patron or a guest of a Justice. Really really really recommend going to see an argument or a decision announcement, whether you are a lawyer or not. Arguably, the most powerful nine people in the world.
I made the pizza crack only because he fancies himself a pizza connoisseur. I believe he wrote a book about it.
And that would be pretty awesome... I know for DOMA people lined up for hours in advance. Is that typical or can someone normally "get in"?
Edit: Were you pooping your pants for that one? I can't imagine arguing in front of the Court.
Get admitted to the Court, it may help you out with getting to watch sessions.
In my case, I did not have to do the argument but I wrote the brief that got the cert granted and wrote/researched the briefs in chief. Really cool to hear the Justices put your arguments to opposing counsel. Especially cool when opposing counsel has no response. My partner, a true master of the craft, argued like it was an every day matter.
Hope to get back, it is a true experience.
You can also get a gig in Congress - they get a few seats. SWMBO goes now and again, mostly for civil rights cases.

Brrrrrrrrrrr. I have had enough winter.
Just bought a new laptop, and figured this would be the appropriate thread for my first post.
Got a heck of a deal on a Samsung ATIV Book 4. It retails at $599.99, and I got it brand new for $449.99. BANG.
I'm sure Windows 8 would be fine if I had a touch enabled PC, but I don't. That makes all the stuff related to touchscreens useless to me. So, instead of similar ways to do things like prior versions, I've had to learn new ways of interacting to get things done. Okay, okay, so I'm an old and cranky fellow of 42.
I figure windows 9 (or 8.5) gets back to basics. MS can't afford not to.

You can make Windows 8 work/look like prior versions: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...page=~pagenum~
or http://www.abc15.com/dpp/news/scienc...vs-downgrading
Eyes are the windows to the soul... No matter what version.
Okay that was lame, I just wanted to participate in the longest thread.
Pancakes.
Well, this would be distracting . . . .

Beer!
Sorry, wrong thread.
Snow in Georgia. My azaleas are unhappy.
Not sure about pigs flying, but I saw a cow fly . . . briefly.
Have you ever seen the Chick-fil-A billboard with a cow repelling by rope off of the billboard? I was driving down I-75 near Delk Road in Atlanta a few months ago when the rope broke. Hopefully no one was injured nor cars damaged by the flying cow (I couldn't see the cow landing area). I can just imagine the accident report.
Since I am stranded at home in the great Atlanta snow-jam of 2014, I will share another probable awesome accident report. On a return trip to Atlanta from a Duke game a few years ago, I was caught in a minor traffic jam on I-85S in South Carolina near Greenville. The Oscar Mayer Weinermobile had rear-ended a car.
The moral of these stories is to stay away from me on Interstates.

You shall see wondrous things. You'll see a cow . . . On the roof of a cotton house . . . .
I was hoping that Lipinski thread was going to talk about Tara. It didn't mention her at all.
I'm hoping the PSH thread evolves into a discussion of Anna Kendrick. Even if she is a Millennial.
Still no discussion of either Tara or Anna. I guess it is all in the view?
This was about to hit page 2...
Kevin Hart is NOT funny.
Wild H(e)arts can't be broken.
Interesting admonition from the board software:

I recommend 22oz. curls;)
May need a few tonight if we shoot 4-23 from 3!!
Husband of weezie just alerted myself to the fact that we have a bat loose in the house, flying around and being a general pain.
Country living!
Crisis averted! Out said bat went when door was opened and outside lights turned on.
It is great being married to and Order Of The Arrow Eagle Scout.
Especially if I need any knots tied.
Well, since I strongly resemble Heidi Klum (height-wise, at least) it's been easy for husband of weezie to stay infatuated all these years!
I took my first airplane trip when I was 9. Don't fly a lot now but this is a first. We have boarded the plane and now have to wait for them to take a part off another plane to fix the co-pilot's armrest before we can leave. I knew seeing two line maintenance workers pull out a notebook and pick up the phone as I passed them on the jetway was not a good sign.
Snowing it's arse off here in central Va.
Freezing rain here in San Antonio.
Dodged a bullet in Philly for once. Called for 4-8" of snow and maybe ice, so they preemptively started with a 2-hr school delay yesterday. Got less than 1", but still colder than an eskimo's icebox. I guess DC area had all the fun this time around...
Yeah! We didn't even start a thread for this latest DCMDVA blast.
The thrill is gone?
The weather and other events today lead to an empty feeling.
Nearly a week since the last post...the LTE is on life support.
Oh dear. Well, considering it's 1) the start of the ACC Tourney, 2) Opening Day looms, 3) drag your feet on taxes time, 4) 'what oh what can anyone do about Bucky Waters' heated thumb wrestling contests, 5) there's a porn star twirling her hair on campus...
is it any wonder?
I mean there are only so many extended hours of lunch break that we can be expected to fritter away! :D
I'm tired.
I'm hungry. Gave up carbs for Lent. My mashed potatoes mock me.
But I will get vengeance.
I gave up arguing with number 2 son for Lent. He's mocking me.
anybody had any good poptarts lately?
Have I really been a member of these boards for over 7 years? Crazy! (Not Crazie, that's something else entirely... ;) )
I guess this is the appropriate place to plug a favorite Asheville band...check out The Hermit Kings. Really cool band. Zack, Zach, and Zaq (I kid you not) are pretty talented. www.thehermitkings.com
Just thought I would post this here for your entertainment.
Of particular interest for our recently departed non-rivals from Maryland is Item # 71.

So apparently Skype interviews are a thing now.
Want even more fun with March Madness? Follow my friend @MissedFTs during the tourney to learn the value of free throws and lament those which were missed.
No, it's not me. I know peeps. And it's funny.
Sigh
C'est la vie.
Time to go outsiide and enjoy spring!
For the most part. But how you dress is a non-verbal clue, no? Well I know someone who was asked to stand up during a Skype (or some sort of video conference-type interview), apparently to prove that he was actually wearing a full suit and not just the top half of jacket/shirt/tie with shorts/jeans/pajama bottoms that couldn't be seen.
Consider yourself warned.
Skype is being used for interviews for scholarships. Niece Elizabeth was one of 25 interviewed for a full ride at Pitt through the Stamps Foundation. The interview was done via Skype and the top 7 would have in person interviews. She felt that her Duke alumni interview really helped her in preparing for the Stamps interview.
10 minutes elapsed. Syracuse has 8 points.
Today marks 6 months without a cigarette. Yay me :)
What a filthy habit.
Went on a glorious five mile hike today, absolutely beautiful day. Not a care in the world about catching a tip-off time. Spring is here, I'm okay with that.
Walked four miles this AM and saw a nice sunrise in and around our neighborhood. Another four mile walk this evening that was cold and damp. No cares about hoops except seeing a replay of the last 1.6 glorious seconds of the ISU-unc game. Bell's Amber Ale awaits my lips and palate as I type.
No offense, but a lot of Floridians can't drive.
Drunk texts, those are great.
So, um, earthquake & aftershocks tonight. I'm not sure who was more affected- me or Chloe. She freaked out initially and ran under the bed, but then was out here napping 20 min later. I was not happy at first (nice initial jolt followed by a lot of rocking and shaking) but felt the aftershocks more than she did.
Everything's fine where I am but I have a friend at the epicenter and she posted on FB that it's not too good out there, but then again it could've been a lot worse.
Hoping that's it for a long while.
Tips for dealing with micro-management?
Holy @#$%. Billybreen just posted on DBR. Anyone remember him;)?
This is not the beer thread. Let's discuss something else. ;):cool:
"I wasn't flirting, I was building rapport"
So I see these Lowe's commercials, like the one where the dweeb puts in his last bathroom wall tile to watch them all fall off the walls and land in a pile on the floor. That's one of my nightmares, where I buy all the junk from Lowe's Depot only to get it home and botch the job.
What I don't get is how that ad is supposed to make me want to go and buy more stuff from a home improvement megastore. That ad makes me want to come to my senses and call Vinnie The Bathroom Tile Guy and find out how much of a discount he'll give me if I pay cash.
As a noted philosopher once said, "A man's got to know his limitations..."
I just received 3 salty sporks. Now I want a margarita.
I have obliquely referenced Schrödinger's Cat, South Park, A George Plimpton hoax, and an old computer game/internet meme in the last 24 hours here on the OTB. I clearly lack focus, or purpose.
"Truly you have a dizzying intellect!"
We've got off-track betting right here?
18 days till Boston Marathon #4.
And today, April 3 is...
http://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/find-a-rainbow-day/
It's being reported that David Letterman is going to retire.
On, Wisconsin.
Today is my great grandmothers 100th birthday...sure Hope we can pull her from the Braves game long enough to celebrate :)
It is April 15th - do you know where your taxes are? :D
No references to anyone else's cat, I have 5 of my own. I did file my taxes a month ago. They owed me a little bit.
So, yeah, finals. <sigh>
Outlines. Copious amounts of caffeine. Much prayer to the exam gods.
Note to self: Go to Target to by index cards.
Crush 'em, Sue!
Did you remember your index cards?
Remember them? Yes. Just haven't gotten a chance to pick them up yet. Tonight or tomorrow. (Which is fine because I haven't had time to start them yet).
And thanks! Congrats, to you, too, BD! I can't even fathom running down the street, much less a marathon.
Constitutional Law (Survey)*, Torts II, Business Associations, Sports Law
* Con is now (for the past 2-3 yrs?) taught as a 1 semester survey class. Man, is it dense, but it's not as in-depth as the 2 semester class. I feel like I've been spending all my time only on Con, and ignoring the other subjects, mostly because it's true.
And lost in all my finals "fun" is the fact that my last class of 2L was yesterday!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

This is how I feel about housing costs in Asheville.
My eldest daughter just moved back to Asheville. When she was at Warren Wilson College there, I visited her in her dorm room. It wasn't cheap, but the contact high from walking down the hallway was free. Dadgum hippies... I think the Biltmore charges something like $2500 to walk down the hallway, but there aren't as many dadgum hippies.
I'm good friends with quite a few hipsters. Does that count?
Somehow just picked up my 5th pitchfork. I felt this was the thread in which to brag. *pats back*
So what are the pubs to hit in Asheville? My niece is getting married not far from Asheville this summer. Asheville was listed, in some article about best cities for micro-brews (I think that was it) that my sister (mother of the bride-to-be) posted on Facebook a little while back. Thus there could be some interest in pub-crawling ... recommendations??
Mattman 91 and ricks68 live in Asheville. I'd send them each a PM and/or post this on the Ymm, Beer thread where mattman91 is a frequent flier;). There was an "Asheville Visitors Thread" here a couple years ago but I think the info there re: microbreweries and pubs would be rather outdated now.
I'm beginning to realize that I'm hoarding cars. Some might be expecting a t instead of the r there. Perhaps I'm hoarding both.
