Sunny, 75 degrees, dewpoint of 55, couldn't be nicer...
Like cantaloupe. (4:00 in after skipping past the PSA, but it's even funnier to hear the whole thing in context.)
I hate when the match doesn’t light the gas soaked tinder pile on fire.
Time for bed...
Time for Deb!
Mites for dweebs!
Bring on the lobstahs!
Eating a red velvet bundtlette (mini bundt cake) and watching a survival show. Feeling pretty proud of myself.
Headed to Victoria Island BC. Pretty excited. My last leg is by seaplane.
Remco Evenepoel.
Did some very physical clearing of very thorny brush and now I have oowies all over.
Ceviche, gambas al ajillo and baton wrapped dates for dinner.
I have a burn pile for the leftovers but I probably need to get a chipper out because I've got so many piles around the property now and it's a pain to lug them to the burn pile. Or, I should get a farm truck or 4x4 or something to help me out.
This was a big overgrown osage orange tree/bush. I discovered upon reflecting on my battle wounds and looking up the beast that it was used as a cattle hedge before barbed wire was invented due to its thickness and prickiness.
How did we lose Wilson again?
Out watching the Cobb County Braves?
Canoodling with Miss Piggy?
In the new Game of Thrones spin-off?
I think she used purple gloves...

If "canoodling" is not in the favorite words thread, it needs to be added.
Wherever Wilson is, methinks he sprinkled some of his special fairy dust in Alaska.
I have eaten some great food in my life and I have a special memory for the great places. I just had a top 25 meal of all time and I feel amazing now.
I want someone to tell me they remember Oodles in London. Two locations: one near Saint Paul’s Cathedral and the other near the British museum. Italian and you couldn’t find a red sauce in it. All vegetarian casseroles that were just incredible.
Push-ups twice a week isn't enough.
It was my turn, I guess.
On a call right now and IMing in Teams with my coworker while posting here. I almost posted here:
"Maybe his teeth fell out."
But that would make no sense to you, would it?
This is what the LTE is about.
And would give us greater reason to fear:

Off to the Champlain Valley Fair today (the big one!) and fine dining. Paper today said features this year are deep fried pickle wrapped around a hot dog and deep fried grilled cheese sandwich. Maple bacon milk shakes, too. Plus cows and pigs and giant 1000 lb pumpkins. Hoo doggies!
It runs from last Friday thru Labor Day itself. It did not disappoint. Amazing people watching, got a Mr. Sausage, saw the miniature goats, lots of cows and pigs, perennial champ Kevin Companion's 1184 lb pumpkin, and polished things off with the absolute best creemee ever, a maple creemee from the Vt Maple Association...did not get a deep fried anything, which is why I feel well now.
For those who celebrate - today is Allston Christmas!
Actually, that was my pledge name.
I always thought it would be fun to travel with a carnival or rennaissance faire around the country. A lot of the workers and performers live out of RVs near the grounds and I'm sure it's just a heck of a party. Lots of hats I'd like to wear for a year; sadly, I don't think I'll get to all of 'em.
There's a compound near me with an extended family that owns and operates a bunch of carnival rides. They're all locked up on the premises during the winter and gone during the summer. During COVID, when all the carnivals had been cancelled, they opened a few up right on the property for fee. It's also like a whole hive of registered sex offenders that pop up on the map (not a joke, unfortunately).
Yeah, I've got nothing...
Help, I'm steppin' into the Twilight Zone

Where am I to go now that I've gone too far?
Lovely wife came home with two sheets of stamps from the post office: one of Pete Seeger, the other of Nancy Reagan. Excellent.

I worked today to make up for not working yesterday. (Spent the morning and into the afternoon serving lunch at Wilhelmina Gill and didn't go in after we were done.) My surprise when I left the office at 8:30 was finding someone just settling in for a night's sleep outside the front door. Not sure who was more surprised.
Doubt it was for our tax setvices. Probably not even waiting foe one of the attorneys in the building.
Sadly, the number of homeless continues to rise. It is just an odd location but, since it isn't an encampment, it may be a safer place than others. Luckily, it was a nice night.
One of my favorite NOVA programs is scheduled for a repeat today at 2:00 on PBS, at least it is here in SC, YMMV. It's about the invention of The First Alphabet.
Among other tidbits is that picture writing was invented independently by many cultures, but the alphabet was only invented once and every current alphabet is derived from the original.
found four young trees growing in my gutter, issue now heroically resolved.

This is how my intro at conferences goes.
Not many fireflies this time of year. Guess they've all mated up. The larva start emerging this time of year and they glow, too. See a lot of them in bare spots in the grass.
Throwback Ghost and the Darkness time. Good stuff.
Never saw it.
Clemons how ‘bout that ugliness in Saskatchewan?

Grass should be walked on
waiting to mow (cool day, high of 70) and it's misting outside! Ack!
The ending of today's La Vuelta stage was painful to watch.
Oh, I ran a 5 miler yesterday morning in the pouring rain. It wasn't the worst weather I've ever run in, but it was a soaker. I'd rather run in the pouring rain than what Falmouth was like a couple of weeks ago, sunny, 80 degrees, and almost NC style humidity. In that one I was swimming in sweat before I crossed the starting line. Sadly, I forgot my knee braces yesterday and had to take it super easy going uphill, otherwise I probably would have finished 10 minutes faster. Oh well. I don't run these things to win. Upright and smiling at the finish line is always my goal.
I've only once had to drop out of a race due to weather, the 2012 Boston Marathon - hottest on record. The bank clock said the temperature was 98 F when I came through Wellesley. It felt hotter. I only made it 20 miles that day. Since it was the weather that prevented me from finishing, I'd have to give the 2012 Boston Marathon the nod for my personal worst race weather experience.
Other nominations:
Paddy's Road Race, a 3 miler, don't remember the year (I've run this race many times), when the temperature hovered around freezing and the precipitation changed from freezing rain to snow during the race. That was fun.
Donohue Pub Turkey Trot, 5k, Thanksgiving 2018, 17 F at the start. Did the second mile running into a head wind and I thought I might get frostbite on my face. I now have a lower limit on the temperature, I won't run if it's below 22 F at the start.
The aformentioned 2012 Boston Marathon and 2022 Falmouth Road Race.
I averaged 2 minutes per mile slower two weeks ago in Falmouth in the heat/humidity than I did yesterday in Charlton in the rain, so, yeah, heat for me is worse. I do way more fall/winter races than I do summer races. I know my body. Perfect race weather for me is 50 F and cloudy.
I know I've done a couple of Boston 10k for Women in the rain, it's also been above 80 at least once but not that humid so not so bad.
Yes, it does. I was dressed acceptably for the temperature except for my face. I ended up trying to run while keeping my gloved hands over my face peeking out between my fingers. It was not fun and I only do these races for fun, so, no more temps in the teens or below.
I don’t think we’re going to get an answer to this one.
I really need to re-read that book. So many daily references.
Perhaps my favorite line in all of modern literature, describing the Vogon ships:
“The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks do not.”
And my favorite comes from the original radio play (a line that did not, unfortunately, make it into the books). From Marvin the paranoid android: "Oh dear, I fear reality is on the blink again."
I swear this isn't me, I don't care what the camera may or may not show:https://www.wcax.com/2022/09/06/bolt...y-poop-dumper/
Do you guys have any idea how concerned I am that we've never been able to find even an ounce of evidence for Sleestak in the fossil record? I'm starting to think Land of the Lost was not the documentary I thought it was.
You folks ever been to a dead serious event for people who believe in fictional creatures?
Pretty interesting. Went to one in Utah for big foot believers.
Curiosity. We were living in UT at the time and saw it promoted so we drove out to the mountainside where the event was held.
Hundreds of people there. They had a wildlife biology professor come in and talk about the science
Like, the food basis and acreage needed to support one.
They also had an open forum for personal stories. A dozen plus people got up on stage and shared Bigfoot sightings or encounters.
I was pretty impressed with the discussion by the wildlife biology professor. I have no idea if he BELIEVED what he was saying or he was just theorizing based on what he knew about other mammals but it was pretty interesting. He talked about the likely social dynamics and eating habits and how that might translate into habitat and ranges and food/forage area required to sustain a single squatch. The takeaway was supposed to be that the science supported their solitary nature --- and therefore the difficulty of capturing the elusive beast on camera.
I came away with the opposite takeaway but, you know, I'm biased.
Did anyone read "The Long Walk" about an escape from a Soviet labor camp during WWII? There was a reference to a Yeti while they were trying to cross the Himalayas. What struck me was how matter of fact it was. The author noted their surprise at seeing it. But that exchange was only a couple of pages. He didn't dwell on it, which lends more credibility to me. That being said, I don't believe in them. I believe in extraterrestrial life, but none that is close enough to make contact. So we aren't alone in the universe in my estimation, but we are practically alone from a visitation standpoint. Also Oswald acted alone.
"Bags of Vermont Poo" band name! Called it!
I was a bit disappointed when I looked at the NFL Off Season thread. I was hoping for something juicy.
This is awful but true (and a little funny). My Scottish in-laws are big time Scottish independence supporters and hate the monarchy. They’ll be here this weekend and want to take us out to celebrate.
Oh. My. Gawd! I'm not surprised but, well, some of the video of the chants from sporting events were, well, whooo boy...
Edit: This is hilarious, from The Irish Times:
Having a monarchy next door is a little like having a neighbour who’s really into clowns and has daubed their house with clown murals, displays clown dolls in each window and has an insatiable desire to hear about and discuss clown-related news stories. More specifically, for the Irish, it’s like having a neighbour who’s really into clowns and, also, your grandfather was murdered by a clown.
Hmmm. That might have been partly my fault.
