I did a couple pages of vague posting without much a peep out of anyone.

Backyard gardening is certainly better than backseat driving...
Purchased a domain for a new enterprise.
The biggest joke in P5 athletics, Vanderbilt.
My other alma mater...
That was not pretty.

Dumpster fire is the phrase that comes to mind...
A Billy Idol song also comes to mind.
My nephew John turns 50 today. It is really nice that the city is throwing him a parade. :D
It will be snowy and chilly along the parade route but that doesn't appear to be stopping people.
Just finished watching parts of the parade and all of the events on the stage in front of Union Station. Fun times were had by all. It will be interesting to hear how many were in the crowd today vs the Royals World Series parade in 2015.
But done safely from the warmth of home or office?
Once pulled into the parking lot of a yarn shop with my younger two sons in the car (a yarn shop I had never been to before so it was absolutely necessary that I check it out). They complained, of course, and asked, "Don't you have enough yarn?" I pointed to the sign conveniently place beside the door to the shop
Yarn
A noun to which the modifier enough does not apply.
I think we're holding steady in our lead.
I've been binge-watching "The Good Place". Very funny show.
The Academy Awards are Sunday night. I have seen 3 of the movies nominated for Best Picture. I also have rehearsal. I still want to watch the show.
I was thinking DVR. And I'll be home from rehearsal before it's over. That way I can fast forward through all the boring parts. Yes - I just tossed a softball for the rest of you. For the most part, I could do without the banter and the songs, but I like to listen to the acceptance speeches, especially the ones from the winners of categories like documentary short subject - those people work hard and deserve their 90 seconds of fame.
Blueberry, oat, chia bread out of the oven. It's good, could be better.
It could have been a chia pet?
As they say, youth is wasted on the young...

I'm discouraged most of the time.
I don't like it, but I don't see any real way to change it.
At least not right now.
The one and done era has not helped.
I don't develop the same kinds of feelings towards the players anymore when they only play for Duke for one year.
But Duke basketball is not why I'm discouraged.
Any play projects on the horizon?
Perhaps it's just a mid-life crisis.
I wonder if twitter would be less of a cesspool if they had the same "wait one minute between tweets" rule that we use around here.
I find a few things help when I am in a discouragement funk.
I don't remember him either, not really. I mean, if you asked me, out of the blue, who Alf Landon was, I might have been able to come up with former Presidential candidate. Maybe. But when you say "Is Alf Landon running again?", I know who you're talking about.
So, I googled him for you.
He lived to be 100. He was governor of Kansas in the 30s. Former Senator from Kansas Nancy Kassebaum is his daughter.
Foremost, the arts. Whether it is music, visual arts, a play, a movie, or a book, getting in touch with the arts reminds me of the vast creative spirit of mankind. Music and a trip to the art gallery usually helps reset my moorings.
I decided to accomplish one thing tonight and I nearly have.
I think we just need one more post to get back to more than 900 ahead of the beer drinkers.
The LTE will remain the longest!!
Saturday will be town number 47 (out of 351). I think I've posted about the Mass 5k Challenge I came up with a few years ago, right? I'm trying to run a 5k or longer in every city and town in Massachusetts.
NPR is heavy on the cello right now. My teeth are starting to gnash.
Saturday's race is in Haverhill. It's about an hour drive for me.
Just checked the weather - it's supposed to be 30 degrees. Cold but not too bad. I'll wear a tech shirt and a fleece during the race.
Unless you've spent time around here (Massachusetts or more generally New England), you probably aren't saying Haverhill correctly. ;)
A very good friend of mine from Duke, Jon Shain, is from there. Those in NC should go see him play:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Shain
Do you know this one? Scituate.
Also, Peabody and Quincy, you might be surprised.
Well, this was fun but I don't think I'm up for another 80 posts tonight. (to get us back to a lead of 1000)
I’m in Georgia now. Cairo is “CAY-ro.” Louisville is “Lewis-ville.”
Bexar
Give that a try.
I'm full of smoked salmon and smoked lamb and Icelandic beer. Totally stuffed.
And husband of weezie suggested that I stop imitating all the British tourist accents.
Actually he's engrossed in re-reading Blood Meridian.
Now what should I do?
Just don’t watch forks over knives.
I loved Iceland when I was there, really want to go back. It's on the list.
I’ve never been to Iceland.
I haven't either. There are a lot of places on my list of where I'd like to visit - Antarctica, Galapagos Island, Iceland, Grand Canyon, Alpe d'Huez, & Ankor Wat to list a few. I'd also like to do a tour to revisit the houses I lived in growing up - although I've heard the compound in Seoul is no longer there - but my school is.
I have been to the Grand Canyon!
Do you street view too?
I’ve been to Food Lion and seen the Lion King.
73F here this afternoon but I’m still stuck at the office.
Does Burgundy pair with a Swanson’s dinner?
Because internet.

The interwebs are a magical thing...
Cars and Coffee tomorrow. Probably taking the Trans Am. But it will be an early start to the morning.
There once was a man from...
Misogyny, thy name is ...
FWIW, production peaked in 2013 and has dropped since.
I always like to say Qualitätswein mit Prädikat .
But my German, while never great, is not what it uses to be.
My Quercus fusiformis needs to be trimmed.
Well, the one in the front yard. Also, the lacey oak and the chinkapin oak.
Yes, the fuse does need to be cut.
Pros and cons of retiring at 72?
I retire most evenings between 9:30 and 10.
As long as you’re not talking about cutting old ficus.
You can read more about them here:
https://www.wildflower.org/plants/re...?id_plant=QUFU
I have a Quercus Polymorpha in the back yard. He is known as Monte.
http://texastreeid.tamu.edu/content/TreeDetails/?id=105
The other quercus fusiformus I have in the back yard is a branded species, an Empire Live Oak. I got one of the early ones they produced in August of 2012. He is known as Empire.
http://masterofhort.com/2012/05/incr...tree-town-usa/
The other oak in the back yard is a Quercus buckleyi, http://texastreeid.tamu.edu/content/TreeDetails/?id=90
Otherwise known as the Texas Red Oak, definitely not to be confused with the Shumard Red Oak more common further north.
I call mine Red.
One of my quercus fusiformis in the front yard died after about 4 years. The arborist insisted it was a Virginiana.
I replaced it with a Quercus Laceyi. Otherwise known as a Lacey Oak.
https://www.wildflower.org/plants/re...?id_plant=qula
The most recent oak I installed is a Quercus muehlenbergii or Chinkapin Oak.
http://texastreeid.tamu.edu/content/TreeDetails/?id=101
I debated quite a while on what to call it. I settled eventually on mule.
So, there you have it. Fuse, Empire, Monte, Red, lacey and the mule. My attempt to keep various oak species going.
I take measurements and pictures of them every year to track their growth. Those that know me on FB can find the albums there.
I'm going to talk to the arborist this week. They claim to have a much better fertilizer program than me using Medina Growin' Green granules. Otherwise known as chicken stuff. Their solution is much more expensive, so I need to take good measurements to make sure the investment pays off.
I've never had a ficus. Wouldn't know what to do with it. Plus, since it isn't native, well that makes it invasive.
I will confess to having two crape myrtles. One is a bit of a mess, as it appears to be an Acoma grafted on to a Basham's party pink. The other is a Dynamite.
I do have Mexican Olive and a Desert Willow also. The latter I placed too close to my air conditoning unit.

Monte produces a boat load of acorns. But with local cats hanging out in my backyard, squirrels are an endangered species.
Need to aerate and top dress the yard again this year.
Speaking of Latin, one of my lines as Friar Laurence is "Benedicite". I called my classics major son to get a pronunciation tutorial.
I have several monster tulip poplars, a few oaks, a couple dogwoods, and a ton of azaleas scattered around the yard. My ash is now mulch, alas. Emerald borer got it. Our canopy is such that you almost can't see our (now two-story) house from google maps' satellite view.
This is one of the smaller tulips we took down before putting on the second floor and bumpout a few years ago.

I have hard clay below the topsoil, so planting is a pain and then drainage is a problem. I have some wild crepe myrtles, dogwoods, magnolias and flowering crab apples along with a few acres of pine. Cut down must of the sweet gums near the house, those are annoying as heck.
I have a Kousa Dogwood tree right on the edge of my back porch. It produces this "raspberry on steroids" looking fruit. When the fruit starts to become overripe and hanging low on the limbs, the tree turns into the local bar for every insect, bird, and mammal in town. In the day, it's just covered with pollinators and at night I'll find the possums up in it. When the fruit is REALLY ripe, it gets everything that feeds on it drunk and the wasps stumble around like drunk fools. This tree could be in the Ymmm, Beer thread...No, the Ymmmm Wine thread!
Our pink dogwoods have been in bloom for over a week now. This cold snap will be a test.
I noticed tulips starting to sprout this morning. The temps in the 60s last weekend must have fooled them. The low last night was 22. We will see how they do.
Trees here in this part of Texas tend to be short. The 7 year old Monterrey Oak is as tall as my neighbor’s couple hundred year old Live Oak. It is due to relatively shallow top soil and layers of limestone underneath.
We had overnight freezes the last couple days, so the things that had already started blooming after a warm January look pretty ragged now.
All this tree talk reminded me I need to do some winter pruning. Time to get out the chainsaw.
Well, that is certainly better than a sharp stick in the eye.
Cars and Coffee was packed this morning. There was only one 1971 Trans Am there.

 Sometimes, I just hate software. Fixed Assets was messing with me today. Assets showed for 2016 and 2018 but not for 2017. They had to have been there earlier today since they passed through to the 2017 tax return. No wonder I curse my way through tax season.
If they keep disappearing, are they really Fixed Assets?
These pre-game afternoons tend to drag on.
I have leftovers also...
When I got to Haverhill this morning, I discovered that I had signed up for a 6k race. Ugh, 22 degrees with a significant head wind much of the way, but it's done and my time wasn't a complete disaster. It wasn't good, but it wasn't a disaster.
Not the first 10 minutes I was hoping for.
How could Joey miss that?
Sure it is a rivalry game, but this team hasn’t been great with all their players.
So, during this commercial break I should mention that their is a ‘69 Trans Am for sale up in Dallas.
What has happened with Notee Dame basketball?
Vernon Carey has saved us this half.
Poorly executed last couple of minutes.
There is also another ‘71 Trans Am for sale in Dallas.
My Mason’s root beer clock arrived today.
Apparently, tomorrow is National Pizza Day. Debating whether I should partake.
Sounds like you need a road trip to Dallas.
Looking at cars today, the variations on hex cell grills has hit overload. Someone needs to come up with another idea.
TV Teddy in action...
Ugh, too much for dinner.
And then a national chain advertises pizza folded in half.
I did talk to someone about car condos last weekend.
This is setting up to be a crappy start to the weekend set.
Advertising cruises. Seems like a good investment.
Well, nice comeback to make a game of it.
Yesssss!!!!!
Wow.
That might put the stake in UNC for the season. Glad we could be the ones to do it.
How much fun was all that?
10/10.
Time for bed. Goodnight!
Who am I kidding? I can't sleep.
Come gather round people...
Meh, not in a Dylan mood.
Trans Am really needs a suspension rebuild.
Does anyone need 15x7 honeycomb rims?
