I find it funny how people are saying this is a dumb call, because if it worked people would be calling him a genius and maybe the best coach of all time right now.

I find it funny how people are saying this is a dumb call, because if it worked people would be calling him a genius and maybe the best coach of all time right now.
That's the life of a head coach. The chiefs went for it on 4th & 1 in the red zone (actually tried to go for it - they didn't make it) instead of kicking a field goal. I called the coach an idiot. Fortunately, they did get the ball back, kicked a field goal, and managed a timely pick off a tipped pass to hang on and beat the Raiders. The win persuaded me to give them back their i so that they are the chiefs instead of the chefs. They will need to win a few more before they get any capital letters back.
The Chiefs get their 'i' and their capital 'C' from me because Mike Vrabel plays for them now. Am I still allowed to wear my Mike Vrabel #50 Patriots jersey? He's my all time favorite Pat.
Understood. They aren't my team.
On a brighter note, Zach Greinke won the AL Cy Young award today. Amazing that the team record didn't seem to hold him back.
I wonder what team we will see him on in the near future. Yankees, Socks who knows.
Hey as a Yanks fan i'm not madd at what you just said.
He has a pretty good contract here - and made an extra $100k for the Cy Young award. He also doesn't like a lot of publicity/attention so hopefully he will stay here.
It does seem like the Royals are a farm team for other franchises.
Yea i think with the record yall had last year he is def. gone. SORRY
I don't know about him leaving - he has a $38m contract through 2012 and the Royals haven't had a winning record since 2003 and the only winning season before that was 1993. I think he knew what he was getting into when he signed.
Of course, if the Royals are offered enough, they would probably take it. There has been no demonstration that a winning team is important since Mr. K owned the team.
I hope the Royals keep him. Although, he could bring some interesting trade conversations to the table. Boston needs a pitcher. A DECENT pitcher. so...
What? I think Lester and Beckett are both decent, maybe even a bit better than that. Matsuzaka has his days and the jury is still out on Buchholz. He has shown the ability to be brilliant but he's not consistent. Papelbon needs something besides a fastball to stay high level. I hope he spends the off season with his curve. Sure, I'd welcome Greinke to the Red Sox, but he wouldn't be Boston's only decent pitcher if he came here.
oh def. Beckett is good, but he seemed off at the end of the season. The only problem is that no seemed consistently good. In other words who could you count on to get a win?
All you baseball people need to go elsewhere and stop tainting the LTE. Sheesh. Maybe I should start a "Boo, Baseball" thread. :p
(For those of you who are unaware, it's true, baseball bores the snot out of me but I'm being tongue in cheek above... or sticking my tongue out... whatever. ;) )
I hate baseball except when the Yanks are playing.
We have sunshine today! I like sunshine.
I am not a Yankee fan. I am not a baseball fan. I will go to games w/ friends... I will watch the World Series on tv... I will take sides on occasion... but baseball bores me.
On another note, I have a headache. :(
Happy Birthday, DevilAlumna! I hope you have a wonderful day - and some great dives scheduled for the weekend.
I just once heard a Tarheel fan whine about Duke not turning on the A/C. How bad is it when you blame air conditioning for a loss?Lmao
Hey HeelKiller, I think this is the first LTE post from Iraq! Thanks. And keep your head down.
Heelkiller1 - welcome to the LTE. Thank you for your service.

Lonely, it's so lonely... :p
one is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
One love
One blood
One life
You got to do what you should
One life with each other
Sisters, brothers
One life
But we're not the same
We get to
Carry each other
Carry each other
One
One singular sensation
Every little step she takes.
One thrilling combination
Every move that she makes.
One smile and suddenly nobody else will do;
You know you'll never be lonely with you know who.
One moment in her presence
And you can forget the rest.
For the girl is second best
To none,
Son.
Ooooh! Sigh! Give her your attention.
Do...I...really have to mention?
She's the...
She's the...
She's the...
One!
One moment in time . . .
one shining moment
oh wait . . . are we allowed to talk about basketball over here? :p
Sue, I think I like this one better:
...and tonight you'll try just one more time
To leave it all behind and to break on through
Oh she can take you, but if she wants to break you
She's gonna find out that ain't so easy to do
And no matter where you sleep tonight or how far you run
Oh-o she's the one, she's the one
One Mic
Happy Turkey day.
I had pumpkin pie for breakfast. Yum.
No pumpkin for me this Thanksgiving.
I missed Thanksgiving this year, and not by choice. :(
I left the pies at my sister's as there are more people in that house. I did bring 2 pieces of pumpkin home - will have the last one with dinner tonight. Had a sliver of Bourbon Pecan and Cranberry Apple Streusel on Thanksgiving day.
No egg nog until Christmas Eve for me. Occasionally I'll do store bought egg nog, but hold out for the real stuff - a heart attack in a cup. (Egg yolks, sugar, half & half, whipped cream, and Southern Comfort)
Oh NO!!! :(
Care to vent on what happened?
Sue, you've had, by far, the worst year of any person I know. I understand the Chinese have a saying that for every three bad years, you get 6 good; you're due for about 6 years worth of goodness crammed into 2010. Big hugs and vibes to you.
Work is SOOO quiet today. And they didn't turn the heat on over the weekend, apparently, as it's completely freezing in the office. :(
My favorite Ross Perotisms:
"You can't kill a snake with two feet in the bucket."
*There's a time for work and a time for play cause God don't keep time on Sundays."
"My pappy used to say that a hard-drinking man ain't half enough for neither."
Ross was to folksy wisdom what anti-matter is to matter.
Well, we've got 17 days to make 127 posts if we're going to make our revised goal of 13,500 by the 2 year anniversary of this thread. Go for it!
so nice long posts eh?
And welcome to the LTE, DukeHopkins. Nice to see your first post in the thread.
We officially have snow falling out of the sky here in Kansas. It will just be flurries - nothing expected to build up or stick. The cold weather finally arrived. I still had plants blooming in the yard yesterday - I think that is over as the temperature is currently 25 degrees.
Just for you, Turk: I'm going to be putting the Santa hat on the tombstone tonight. I'll have to see if I can get a picture posted somewhere.
I do not care that Tiger Woods had girls on the side.
My first rehearsal for Almost Made in Heaven isn't until the 14th.
I'm taking the first act of my full length Yes, And to my playwrights' workshop on Monday.
Boy, that's not a sentence you read every day. It would be interesting to try to work into a conversation. Maybe BD can work it into one of her plays.
Me: "I'm heading out to run a couple errands."
Mrs. Turk: "OK. What for?"
Me: "I'm going to be putting the Santa hat on the tombstone tonight."
Post number 13401, reply number 13400. I'm taking this one. We only have 99 more to go and 16 days to do it. Piece a cake if you ask me.
I took the kids picture for the Christmas Card this evening. Yeah, I know, I'm always kinda late with it. I buy the cards with a place for a photo then just slip them in. Next weekend is for putting up the tree and addressing cards and my oldest son's 16th!!!! birthday.
Question:
I offer you 3 choices:
1) from now until you die, everytime you have a red light, it turns green so that you never have to wait again.
2) $10000 cash.
3) ability to fly like superman for 20 days.
Flying! It's not even close.
Oh man, flying would be great - if it were like Superman, does that mean I could carry Mr. DA with me? Would it be 20 consecutive days, or could I choose when I wanted to have a flying day?
But, never having a red light again?? Hmmm. A lifetime of little convenience vs. one incredible 20-day experience... I'd probably tilt towards flying too.
Other one is so worth more than $10K to me, that one is a bit of a red herring.
The money.
The red lights are nothing compared to LA traffic, and flying hasn't ever held a great fascination for me. However, I may have some unforseen (but good) expenses coming my way.
I'd still take the flying. I'd try to figure out a way to turn it into a money-making venture and who knows, I might wind up with the $10 million too!
Actually your net payout in North Carolina would be: $14,144,000. You would get over $7,000,000. (You can send the excess to me!:))
You can get the payout number here.
They withhold 25% Federal and 7% State (NC) for taxes, but wouldn't one actually owe the highest tax bracket amounts, over and above the withholding? Or is the tax on lottery winnings capped by those amounts? Inquiring minds want to know.
OK, I was right. I read to the bottom of the Analysis page.
Quote:
- All of the tax amounts listed above are the taxes withheld at the time of the prize award, not your exact final tax burden. Since every individual winner's situation differs, and every winner chooses to dispense their winnings in a different manner, there is no way for us to determine what your final tax burden will be. For example, someone who gives away a large amount to charities would have a vastly different tax burden than someone who buys new cars and houses. The chart above provides the information that we know for sure: the money that you will initially receive from the lottery.
- We are fully aware that the tax rates listed for some states on this page are different than the states' current income and sales tax rates. The state tax rate withheld by the lottery at the time the prize is awarded is oftentimes different than what you would expect to be withheld ("standard" state tax rates). Because of the reason discussed in Note #2, states often try to keep from withholding too much, because they know that many lottery winners do not end up paying a flat (insert highest tax rate here) percent of their winnings in taxes. There are many ways to reduce the tax burden, which is why it is so important to obtain the services of a top-notch professional accountant before claiming the big prize.
I just bought tickets to the Harvard - George Washington basketball game on December 30th. I'm taking the whole family, 6 tickets, for $51. Go Crimson!
After watching a movie, a friend of mine is considering doing a house swap with another friend of hers for a week this summer.
Funny, I'm watching a cheesy Lifetime movie about a 40 year old woman who's on vacation in Hawaii & has a fling with her much younger surf instructor... thought I'd try that instead. :D :D :D
Now if I could only get to Hawaii...
Ah yes, and then my friend, the dear that she is, reminded me that the reason that the older woman got the hot, younger surf instructor is because she's (played by) Heather Locklear.
My friend is such a killjoy. ;)
Want to get her back?
Tell her she's more likely to end up with Jack Black than Jude Law. :D:D

I think it's time to watch Love Actually.
Just to let you know - it is cold and grey outside in Kansas today. No precipitation today but just a dull, dreary day. I would prefer some sun.
anyone else see where Iverson's gonna be starting tonight for the Sixers
I saw The Men Who Stare At Goats over the weekend. The mixed reviews had lowered my expectations enough that I really enjoyed it. I was laughing a lot, sometimes I was the only one in the theater laughing, but still, I enjoyed it. And George isn't even giving us the sexy.
Well, yes, of course, he can't help that, but there was nothing extra, like a tuxedo, and the character is a bit of a nutcase. I find even his nutcases sexy, but that's me (and another 2-3 million women).
This summer was quite nice...though albeit a cold summer for here.
weather update for today: we got 3 inches of snow last night so the commute to work was interesting this morning...including a double bus that had slid out and hit a stop. still snowing and we are supposed to get up to 8" by the end of the now. oh and its 9° with a high of 12.
We are warm by comparison - I think the high is supposed to be 14. Snowfall last night depended on what part of town - southern portion got about 1 inch and several inches on the north part of town. Unfortunately, drizzle prior to snow so some ice issues on the highways. Snow is done and the sun is out. :)
Tonight we dip below 0.
It's not too bad here in Pensacola, about 55, and will probably get into the low 40's. I am loving the cold weather.
I'm 17 today! Getting older is bittersweet. For me, once I hit 22, I'll really start missing the "young" years, no matter how great my job and life is.
It's cold in St. Louis. 'Twas 20 degrees with 30-40 mph winds around 5:00 when I walked home from the train station. It's been spitting snow all day, but no accumulation. This was a good day to have a knee length, windproof coat.
The LTE just got another post longer...
Lalalalalalala...
Oh yeah, good news is coming... :D
Creeping along, 53 posts to go.
Who was your favorite Beatle?
Family legend: We lived in Pittsburgh twice. When the family moved back, it was after the Beatles hit it big in the States. Friends gave a party and ordered a cake. They wanted it to say Welcome Back, Beadles on the cake. They thought they had finally convinced the bakery that it was not the singing group. :D You guessed it - when the cake was picked up, they had put the faces of John, Paul, George, & Ringo on the cake.

I'm going back to Vegas! I'm going back to Vegas!
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

It's raining in SoCal right now. Actually, it has been for much of the week.
The sun has come out.
I believe this is my first post on this thread, but I could be wrong. In other news it was foggy this morning.
Raining and cloudy all day in usually beautiful north carolina...
Had the first rehearsal tonight for Almost Made in Heaven. It's going to be good!!! I've got a great cast.
Sample dialog
Jeff: Are you really telling me Carolina - Duke is that big of a deal?
Laura: Duke - Carolina.
The actors kept cracking each other up with that exchange. If they can keep it together, that bit will bring down the house.
How do you like the new coat?
I'm in need of a new rainshell-type parka - I burned a hole in my North Face rain shell (the first item of clothing I bought when I moved to Seattle!) courtesy of the leaf blower exhaust. :( We have far too many leaves anyways. :( :(
Adventure With Grandma
I remember my first Christmas adventure with Grandma. I was just a kid. I remember tearing across town on my bike to visit her on the day my big sister dropped the bomb: "There is no Santa Claus," she jeered. "Even dummies know that!"
My Grandma was not the gushy kind, never had been. I fled to her that day because I knew she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told the truth, and I knew that the truth always went down a whole lot easier when swallowed with one of her world-famous cinnamon buns. I knew they were world-famous, because Grandma said so. It had to be true. Grandma was home, and the buns were still warm. Between bites, I told her everything. She was ready for me. "No Santa Claus!" she snorted. "Ridiculous! Don't believe it. That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad. Now, put on your coat, and let's go." "Go? Go where, Grandma?" I asked. I hadn't even finished my second world-famous, cinnamon bun. "Where" turned out to be Kerby's General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. That was a bundle in those days. "Take this money," she said, "and buy something for someone who needs it. I'll wait for you in the car." Then she turned and walked out of Kerby's. I was only eight years old. I'd often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people scrambling to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, clutching that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy, and who on earth to buy it for. I thought of everybody I knew: my family, my friends, my neighbors, the kids at school, the people who went to my church. I was just about thought out, when I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker. He was a kid with bad breath and messy hair, and he sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock’s grade-two class. Bobby Decker didn't have a coat. I knew that because he never went out for recess during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but all we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn't have a cough, and he didn't have a coat. I fingered the ten-dollar bill with growing excitement. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat! I settled on a red corduroy one that had a hood to it. It looked real warm, and he would like that. "Is this a Christmas present for someone?" the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down. "Yes," I replied shyly. "It's ... for Bobby." The nice lady smiled at me. I didn't get any change, but she put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas.
That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper and ribbons (a little tag fell out of the coat, and Grandma tucked it in her
Bible) and wrote on the package, "To Bobby, From Santa Claus" -- Grandma said that Santa always insisted on secrecy. Then she drove me over to Bobby Decker's house, explaining as we went that I was now and forever officially one of Santa's helpers.
Grandma parked down the street from Bobby's house, and she and I crept noiselessly and hid in the bushes by his front walk Then Grandma gave me a nudge. "All right, Santa Claus," she whispered, "get going." I took a deep breath, dashed for his front door, threw the present down on his step, pounded his doorbell and flew back to the safety of the bushes and Grandma. Together we waited breathlessly in the darkness for the front door to open. Finally it did, and there stood Bobby.
Fifty years haven't dimmed the thrill of those moments spent shivering, beside my Grandma, in Bobby Decker's bushes. That night, I realized that those awful rumors about Santa Claus were just what Grandma said they were: ridiculous. Santa was alive and well, and we were on his team. I still have the Bible, with the tag tucked inside: $19.95.
He who has no Christmas in his heart will never find Christmas under a tree.
Every little kindness you do during this holiday season is showing Santa to someone. Have a very Merry Christmas.
And a Happy Chanukah!
To avoid any confusion, the above is not autobiographical. Just an inspiring story I wanted to share.
Hope everyone is having a great day.
What a good reminder!
Seventeen posts and 4 more days. I think it's in the bag.
SOMEONE DISTRACT ME! I DON'T WANT TO STUDY FOR MY BIOCHEM FINAL TOMORROW!
oh and now 15 :D
And now it is 12.
I would like to report some missing days. It can't possibly be December 17th already. I must have misplaced a few days. Can anyone help me get them back?
Project Runway, Top Chef, AND So You Think You Can Dance have all had their finales. I'm not sure I can watch American Idol anymore since I can't really imagine a post-Adam Idol. So, I ask you people, what am I going to watch on TV? (Besides Duke basketball, of course.)
This just in, BD loves babies.
Only 3 away now!
1 more to go!
13,500!
Today, 03:48 PM #13500
Next challenge.
Good job, Ozzie. You got us over the hill.
Learn it well! In a former life I was on the other end of the medical biochem class (as a course co-director). We had people who studied by memorizing old exams as opposed to actually studying the material. They were then upset when they missed a question that had been miskeyed on the old exam. I never had much sympathy for that.
Hello.
This is a good football game on right now.
What's the SoCal countdown, Sue?
Good morning everyone. Here we are, the second anniversary of the longest thread ever. Tomorrow marks three years since Baby BD was diagnosed with a brain tumor. My family has been blessed to have him and blessed to get to keep him. Thanks to the miracle of modern medicine, he's a happy, healthy, normal 5 year old.
Let's get to 20,000 by next December 20th. OK?
