Why have a speaker who represents a 20th century American company that is having trouble competing in the 21st century in a global economy? How inspiring is that for graduates?

I agree with BD, can't watch Chris Paul play. I was standing next to him at a community event in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 2006. It kept going through my head...cheap shot artist.
Sorry, but I graduated in 1983 ... with a speech by Mary Duke Biddle Trent Seamans. At least I knew what Katherine Graham did. MDBTS scores lower than Graham.
The most poignant graduation speech I saw was 2002 when Emory had a year when each honorary recipient spoke. They had two men from Atlanta (Lawrence Colburn and Hugh Thompson) get up and briefly speak from their hearts about the My Lai Massacre. Nothing but tears. Wow...
Cheers,
Lavabe
I heard the CEO of Bear Stearns gave the speech for Fuqua . . . is that true? There are so many possible jokes there I don't know where to start.
This year, the UGA Graduation had Clarence Thomas as the speaker. Talk amongst yourselves.
Vance, 1984 was an improvement over my year, 1983! We had Mary
Duke Biddle Trent Semans, whose accomplishment was being born very rich and staying that way.
Added moments adter initial post: LOL, I responded to gvtucker before seeing that Lavabe had beaten me to the punch. Sorry, classmate!
I went to the Winthrop College (Rock Hill, SC) graduation last Saturday (to watch my niece graduate!). They didn't have a guest commencement speaker. Wasn't on the schedule, no one was sick. The school president gave a few remarks, totaling less than 5 minutes - four at the beginning and one at the end. It was wonderful and no one missed what wasn't said!
Winthrop should be an example to all schools.
I graduated in the Madeleine Albright year ('04), and I really liked what she had to say, as did all of my family members.
Certainly better than Michael Bloomberg, who spoke at my brother's 2003 Wake Forest graduation. Summary: "I'm so great. Now, let me tell you why..."
[Shameless self-congratulation] My favorite graduation speaker was the guy who delivered the address at my high school graduation: me.:D [/Shameless self-congratulation]
You, gvtucker, are smarter than I am. I couldn't remember her name.Quote:
All course, all of y'all are wrong, unless you were in my graduating class. 1984, Katharine Graham.
And devil84, I DO remember who I sat beside in Wally Wade during our graduation! ;)Quote:
As a member of the class of '84, I concur with gvtucker.
I know Bill Bradley spoke in '93 but don't remember a word. And H. Keith H. Brodie was sick for the darned thing.
I think I am with Ozzie on this...my attitude at both graduations I have attenede(my own that is)was give me the darn degree and let me get outta here!
Well, at least you had yours at Wally Wade. 1983 was, I guess, the last year the grauation was held on East Campus.
Ymo: After having sat through nine of the ones here in Atlanta, here are a few notes I've made:
1) The speaker whose speech was the shortest was panned for going so fast. I want to say it was George Mitchell (before the baseball investigation). It was less than ten minutes.
2) The speaker whose speech was the longest was panned for going to long. It was this year's speaker, Bernie Marcus (who reminded us about Home Depot many times). It was more than twenty minutes.
3) Whenever the speaker is a "no-name," the students will complain in the student newspaper.
4) Whenever the speaker is a "big name," the students will complain that they want someone more liberal or conservative.
5) One year, the president of the univeristy wanted to give the talk. The students complained. The president listened.
6) One year, Tom Brokaw, as suspected, was great. Oddly enough, we appeared in NBC Nightly News' end of the graduation season compendium of speeches. Go figure!;)
Cheers,
Lavabe
Hey Ozzie-I teach at Winthrop, but grad students, so I don't go to undergrad commencement. I'll have to ask around today and see if that was planned. Usually, there is a speaker (never at grad commencement, which is totally cool). I wish I had known...another Blue Devil in the territory here is always a plus.
Okay, BD, are we ready to call this one done?
With less than 100 posts to reach 2000? I think not.
Hmmm, what haven't we talked about yet?
I'm too lazy to google this, so I'll ask all you learned DBRers. How often do we humans shed our skin, I mean completely replace it? I'm guessing every 90 days, but only because I once heard we grow new legs every 90 days.
I'm not giving Duke a dime until I get a good explanation of why he wasn't there. Having a fever or whatever they said doesn't cut it.
His speech was awful, full of 1992 election Democratic talking points (six months AFTER the election ended) and containing nothing about basketball, which would have been interesting. He spent most of the speech talking about how bad the economy was, which of course was rubbing salt in the wound because we were all looking for jobs.
Brokaw '90 and George Will '91 were much better. Wasn't around for Margaret Wright Edelman '92 but I doubt it was noteworthy either way.
We had Gary Trudeau in '88, which was pretty entertaining. The main thing I remember is his central point: Always ask the impertinent question.
Who spoke this year?
Mine (1993) was Bill Bradley. A good speaker I guess, but total "pie in the sky" leftist political horse-poo. Naturally, I am biased - but I wouldn't even mind a leftist speech, and would expect no less from Duke. But this was way out there...
In 2001, Charlayne Hunter-Gault delivered our commencement address. I can't say that I recall any positive comments from any of my classmates. Overall, if I recall correctly, the speech wasn't particularly bad, but it was a bit lengthy and not particularly the "off into the world" inspirational message that one would expect.
Anyone know if these speeches can be re-viewed somewhere? YouTube? I'd like to see some of the earlier reference Bush / Wagoner speeches for a comparison...
I dunno, that 84 speech was an unbelievably bad one for the ages... I can't believe I'm still so peeved after all this time...
Went back in 85 to hang with what was left of my posse; the speaker was some lady who was president of U of Chicago (Northwestern? one of those...) and she was GREAT. Wish I could remember her name; she had everyone going... BTW, that one was on East Campus too...
To me, they need to have a "get over yourself" theme... I believe MIT had "Click and Clack", the NPR Car Talk guys one year... That's the way to go... Have fun, lighten up a little...
I wasn't there and didn't hear it, but here's a link to the whole thing... 2008 Commencement Address by Barbara Kingsolver.
I believe you went back to hang with friends but it wasn't for the '85 graduation. We were in Wally Wade and the speaker was Theodore Hesburgh (spelling?), president of Notre Dame. I thought Katherine Graham was president of the University of Chicago but I wouldn't trust my memory on that one.
I enjoyed my graduation speech more than I thought I would so, ringing praise, although I think I was the only one. He said something like, I don't really have any advice to give you that you would actually listen to so let me tell you what the civil rights movement was like for me. A history lesson instead of advice? Works for me.
BD - Class of '85
Well scratch my back with a hacksaw... I hate when that happens...
Kay Graham was running the Washington Post at the time... That I DO know for a fact, and I was clean and sober and awake for that whole mumbling pile of drivel (unfortunately)!!
So I heard Hannah Gray give a great speech on East Campus... maybe it was Homecoming Weekend 1962... yeah, that's the ticket... arrgh... "Violins on television? oh never mind..."
Res ipsa loquitor,
Turk
In '02 we got to listen to Tom Wolfe mumble incoherently about hooking up for what seemed like forever under the sun. I was pissed when I heard the next year was going to get Kofi Anan, although since he didn't show I guess I'm no longer bitter.
Vandy has a tradition of having the current chancellor speak, which turns out be equally as boring as many of these sound but with a much lower speaker's fee.
Rick Wagoner > Stu Scott on any day
Can anyone tell me who the speaker was in '82? I remember graduation was on East, the MBAs waved money when their degrees were conferred, the nurses had balloons, and someone popped the cork on their champagne during the invocation. (Our group waited until our degrees had been conferred - then let the popping commence.) I remember someone in native dress of an African country, I believe, waving something that looked like dried grass.
(Apparently in EarlJam's poll - I must feel a lot older than my age - the memory is failing. Of course, I don't think I could have said who it was a month after graduation either. :D )
My brother graduated Class of '82. Are we sure Hannah Gray didn't speak at that one? It was definitely on East Campus. The student speaker gave a speech entitled 'No More Lies'.
From an unsubstantiated source:
Humans shed about 600,000 particles of skin every hour - about 1.5 pounds a year. By 70 years of age, an average person will have lost 105 pounds of skin.
Humans shed and re-grow outer skin cells about every 27 days - almost 1,000 new skins in a lifetime.

How do certain hairs know when to stop growing?
For example, the hair on your head and face will grow and grow and grow and never stop (I think).
But arm hair, leg hair, toe hair, underarm hair and hair around the hmmm hmmm spots only grow to a certain point....then stop.
That's kind of amazing to me. How it know?

In 2000, I was at the graduation of Transylvania University because my husband was getting his degree from there. Hundreds of people packed into a little gym with no air conditioning in June. So after endless blather about "achieving your dreams" and "turning obstacles into stepping stones" and other such dewey-eyed nonsense graduation cliches, the keynote speaker gets up and say, in a very thick Kentucky accent, "Never give up. Never, never give up. That's all you need to know."
And the gym goes nuts! We were so excited to escape our fate of being roasted alive! And then one of the administrative bigwigs takes the mike and says, "Mr. [whoever], we thank you so much for coming to graduation. Surely you have just a few more things to say to our grads."
Whereupon dude gets back up and yammers on for 45 minutes about his peanut butter empire. I am not kidding you. It was horrible. It was like fate was just toying with us, like it wanted us to smell its fetid breath before its jaws snapped together and crushed us.
Take two aspirin and call me in the morning. KIDDING!!
Bostondevil, didn't you see the doctor today about your knees? What did he/she say?
You know, I think you're right. I think this contributed to my frustration in 1983, as the speaker in 1982 was supposedly great.
DukieinKansas: Sounds like we in 1983 continued the traditions set forth in 1982... except for the quality of the speaker.
Cheers,
Lavabe
I certainly can't testify as to the quality of the speakers since the things I mentioned above are the only things I remember from the ceremony. One other thing I remember is that there was no Pomp & Circumstance for the graduates walking in - it was more like carnival music. I'll have to see if I can find any programs from graduation to see who spoke.
Tagging is new (I think), and I'm all over it and love it.
Check out your public profile too. There's all kinds of cool stuff. I've already created a gallery with some pictures at Cameron.
Should we expect any announcement from the Mods or have I missed it? I think it would be great to get a rundown of the new features. Great stuff from what I've found so far. Good job!!!
At least none of your commencement speakers ever went out of his or her way to insult any of your classmates.
"It's so nice to look out on this field and see a group of winners for a change."
--Cokie Roberts, Wallace Wade Stadium, 1999
Here's a new topic, I think. You know how there are songs that lots of people get the lyrics wrong, excuse me, while I kiss this guy. Anybody have one that they got wrong that everyone else wonders what is the matter with them? I heard an '80s era REM tune on the radio today, 'Your Brown Eyes', the rest of you probably know it as 'Pilgrimage'. Anybody else?
Tilly, yes, I saw the doctor. He told me that although I probably could finish one more marathon, I shouldn't make a habit of running them. My kneecap doesn't track properly and no amount of weight training, physical therapy, getting the right shoes is ever going to completely change that. He did however tell me that if I'm really determined to run again next year, I should start physical therapy now. He also said I should do much more cross-training than I have been. Ugh, I hate swimming, but I will have to do that and the stationary bicycle almost as much as running. Finally, he said I should not do a training run of more than 12 miles after January. He said that my knees will flare up no matter what I do and that I should save it for race day. He told me any run of more than 12 miles will take me about 3 months to completely recover from. He did however say that I've done no permanent damage, my ligaments and cartiledge are fine, I don't need surgery, and that running 3-6 miles shouldn't give me too much problem in the future if that's how I want to get my exercise in general.
So my current plan is to do a 15 mile run sometime this summer, an 18 mile run sometime in the fall and a 20 miler in January just to get them in. Then I'll do 3-6 twice a week with a swim and a cycle mixed in, a couple of 10-12 milers in the 6 weeks before the marathon and hope for the best. So, yeah, I'm in, one more time. Next year is the 113th and 13 is my lucky number. Six hours or bust.
Yep, daughter of Hale and Lindy Boggs, both former members of congress from Louisiana.
Yeah, we updated. Only die-hards will notice, though (average post-count in this thread is well over 1,000). I haven't plumbed the depths of the new offering yet. Let me know if you find anything really cool.

Maybe you hadn't had any visitors since the board software was updated. I'm guessing the feature adds a new DB column that is NULL for all previous visits. I see names for the recent visitors in mine.
Visitor messages are new, aren't they? That's kinda cool -- each user essentially has their own mini-board now.
Here's a list of new features in this version of the board software.
Nice find! I'm glad 3.7 supports "Reciprocal friendships between users"; I was getting so tired of the one-sided friendships. Wait, that's an oxymoron right?
Social Groups are interesting. I created one for the PPB. For the cool people of the PPB, that is. ;)
In name-dropping news, I know Cokie Roberts brother-in-law (also her husband's twin).
I'm only doing one more! If I break 6 hours, then I'm official and I'm officially satisfied with my marathon career. If I don't break 6 hours after a year of approaching it properly, knowing what I know now, then I can't break 6 hours and although I won't be satisfied, I will know that I did the absolute best I could.
Anybody want to run the Tufts 10K with me on Boston Common in October? I'm going to keep running that one as long as I'm still upright.
You may have a taker for the Tufts race...its been about 7 years since I did even a 5k though. Wait, I did one when I got to Greensboro after B-school, scratch the 7, and insert a 5.
Instead of loading images that I have stored on my computer, I'd rather load them by linking to their proper URL. Unfortunately, I think that albums only allow you to upload directly from your computer; they don't allow you to link to the URL of a picture.
Is there any way, while creating/editing albums, to link to the URL of a picture?
Thanks,
Lavabe
This is new software? I hadn't noticed.
Would you rather have a duck that followed you absolutely everywhere you went, or a four-inch tail?
I have absolutely no idea who spoke at my graduation. I remember sitting in Wally Wade in 85 degree sun with a 101 fever, sweating like a sunofabitch. I felt miserable, but I wasn't going to miss my own graduation.
My daughter (who, by the way, is now the lovely Mrs. Templeton that graced the DBR's front page earlier this week! Thank you again Julio!) graduated Magna Cum Laud from Appy State. When she asked me what I graduated with, I told her "great relief!" True story.
This thread has set me to thinking about my undergraduate graduation. In the late sixties, graduations took place in what was then Indoor Stadium during the first week of June. It was steamy and hot. It seems to me that Dr. Rankin of the political science department and member of the Civil Rights Commission spoke. The ceremony was interrupted by a bomb threat which had been phoned in after the ceremony was underway. We were all instructed to leave in a quick and orderly fashion. The processional lines would reassemble in front of the Chapel and march into the Chapel so that the ceremony could then continue in there. There was not room for anyone but the graduates inside. Family members and others attending the ceremony would be able to listen outside. Many undergraduates disappeared somewhere between Indoor Stadium and the Chapel. I decided to line up again and continue. I had worked too hard to miss out on my only graduation from college! My dad was there making lots of pictures with his 32 mm camera, thrilled to be making pictures of his oldest offspring graduating in the Chapel just as he did. (He always said that his class was the first to graduate in the Chapel once it was completed.) The alumni publication that come out soon afterwards included a picture of him covering this event with his camera.
The commencement for my graduate degree was tame and routine by comparison to what had happened that June of 1967!
One other note: class reunions took place over graduation weekend back then. Quite a gathering of many generations and many classes on campus!
At the moment, I would take the cat every time.
A few years ago, Emory started a new tradition for its commencement. The 50th year alumni (plus those who have more than 50 years) are invited to take part in commencement. They are given special medallions and completely gold graduation gowns. They sit as a group among the degree awardees, and are conferred special status during the ceremony. It's really nice to see all generations taking part in commencement.
I don't recall seeing this tradition before. Does anyone know of this tradition elsewhere?
Thanks,
Lavabe
I created one too. I was curious who had football season tickets and whether there was an interest in a DBR tailgate meeting or something before games. So the official "Duke Football Bandwagon" was created.
Sorry for bringing down the avg post count on the thread :)
Say what? Wilson, have you been smoking crack again?
Curiously, some people are born with tails. The other day I saw a hawk fly by with a squirrel tail. At first I thought it a mythical beast but then astutely deduced that the hawk was in fact clutching a squirrel in it's talons and the tail of the squirrel was aligned perfectly with the tail of the hawk. But I digress.
If the tail were soft and flexible, with some nice fur, I'd choose the tail. But a stiff stubby tail like a boxer, no thanks, I'd suffer with the quackery.
BTW, the LTE just finished WWII. OMG! TTYL!
I think I found a bug in the new code. Check out this poll. Am I crazy, or should those percentages add up to 100 and not whatever they add up to?
that's a multiple choice poll, so likely it shouldn't add up to a 100
Which will we hit first, 100 pages or 2000 posts?
My guess is 100 pages, but will it float?
Cross-training: what about doing the elliptical instead of swimming? Just a thought.
Doctor: Glad he didn't tell you to stop running. Never trust a doctor who tells you to stop doing something you enjoy.
Mixed up lyrics: Ohh yeah, have definitely done that a time or two. The one I'm most embarrassed/proud of is "we're living in a poly gag that's giving off sparks." Who knows the correct lyric? Thank God for the internet as now I can look up lyrics. :)
A few years ago, UGA used to plan their 50 year reunion to be the same weekend as graduation. The 50 year alumni were invited to the ceremony and they would sit in the President's Box in the football stadium and the President would acknowledge them during the ceremony. I think they changed it because of the difficulty of getting people around during graduation weekend.
I don't want to speak ill of the dead since I hear he passed away about 6 years ago, but Stephen J Gould was horrible as a commencement speaker. He actually scolded us during his speech for not paying enough attention to him. 89 graduates please speak up and agree.
I seem to remember Jimmy Carter having a very good graduation speech at Duke in 1997. It was certainly better than GHW Bush's in 1998. I looked for it online, but couldn't find it. I didn't hear it live, but reading it afterwards I thought it was clever and thought provoking, without going on too long.
I do remember that afterwards someone asked him for a copy of his speech to publish on the website, and he handed them a notecard with four words on it, representing the four topics he wanted to speak about. Good story.
Anyone attend that day in '97 have a different memory?
Can Someone Please Tell Me Who Spoke At Duke This Year?
"We're living in a powder keg and giving off sparks." And yes, I actually knew the song, just had to listen to the lyrics to get it right. Check it at about the 2:03 minute mark. I almost added that song as one of my most embarrassing.
The girl with colitis goes by! :D
Lavabe, that's really bad.
Finally, the movie stars without makeup ad has disappeared. I wonder what made that finally happen. Did anyone ever figure out why the pictures had names sometimes and no names others?
(I hope this doesn't bring it back!)
It didn't register me the first time I heard "Lucy," but then I read an article about mixed up lyrics, and it's stuck with me ever since. Makes more sense than "kaleidoscope eyes.";)
REM's "Stand" made no sense to me; I thought they were singing about a guy named Stan.:o
I'm more confused about the TITLES of some songs. Why did the Who call it Baba O'Riley?
Not sure of the accuracy but, http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=1529
O.k., I've got one for y'all. The song "Sweet Southern Comfort" by Buddy Jewel is a sappy ode to the South which I am nonetheless addicted to. It includes the lyric, "... kissing Debbie William's sister on the porch homecoming week."
Well, I first heard it during basketball season and I thought the song went, "...kissing Gary William's sister..."
Edit: Wow! Just looked it up and that is exactly what the lyric is! Yuck. Obviously, Buddy isn't an ACC fan. :D
Before the new board software I could pull up DBR on my home computer and would be automatically logged in. Now, I have to log in every time I pull up the board. But, that doesn't happen at work, I can still pull up the board at work and be logged in.
Can anyone help me with this? I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.14. I checked the options sections of tools and everything seems to be in order (mind you I'm not a computer expert) and I'm able to save passwords for other sites and be logged into them when I open them up.
When I do open up DBR and have to log in, I do check the "remember me" box. What else do I need to look into about DBR so that my computer will remember to log me into DBR when I open the page.
Thanks!!!
First, make sure your browser is set to accept cookies - that's how it remembers your username and password.
Then log out (which removes the DBR cookies) and then log back in, making sure to check the remember me option.

Tilly--I don't have a solution for you. I am using the same version of Firefox and it's working fine.
What happens if you use Internet Explorer or Safari?
I really don't have much else to offer from here; the possibilities are myriad.
It's probably not a problem with our board, or it wouldn't work at work, either. It's something local with your home computer and the Firefox installation.
If you want to take this off-line, let me know.

Hey y'all! Just got back last night -- looks like I have a lot to catch up on, here on the OTB. Anyone care to give a synopsis?
Wish I could say I missed everyone, but a week w/o internet was actually a lovely thing. Sun and warmth and diving and pina coladas were equally lovely.
Welcome back, DA.
In a nutshell people posted, others replied. Then Lavabe when on a posting rampage. I guess the academic year being over freed up some time.
Welcome back Devilalumna. How was your vacation?
As far as catching you up on the postings, ditto on Ymo's post above.
Synopsis:
1) BillyBreen is still way out in the stratosphere, and has gotten even more prolific, now that we have new sofware (sic) on the DBR.
2) Ymo is doing his best to make this draft work, especially without any NASCAR going on.
3) Devildeac has cut back on his beer reviews.
4) EJ has put up some vintage posts (especially the foam party photo).
5) Bluedawg vs. TNTDevil on the PPB.
6) Colchar did fine with his committee, and has a ticket for a British summer.
7) Ozzie is Ozzie, Tilly is Tilly, and Jason is Jason. BostonDevil visited the knee doctor.
8) Wilson's back in form.
9) DBR ATL night at the Braves game last night: uga, EJ, Supadave, Steven, and me took in yet another one-run loss from the Braves.
10) 2535Miles knows too much Bonnie Tyler songs.
11) DukieinKansas & Fish80 are moving up in the LTE stats.
Has anyone else observed that throaty's HPR doesn't apply to the OTB?;)
I believe blublood needs waves; ghost did well with waves, and is now Dr. Ghost.:)
Cheers,
Lavabe
3) Devildeac has cut back on his beer reviews.
Lavabe[/QUOTE]
One or two new brews per week, unless I can trade malted beverages with someone, then I can have a 6er, trade 5 beers and do 6 reviews per week:D. I still have some "cellared" ales that I dust off every week or two that have not been reviewed. Now, if you will send up some Sweetwaters, I will be happy to review those in a couple weeks. If you would also send some additional samples from your next house-hunting trip or two to KY, I will be happy to review those, also:D. I really hope I have not duplicated any prior reviews:o. But, I would be willing to try;). There, smilie maximum reached so Lavabe can not exceed (wink, wink-does that count as 5?)
Bostondevil is recovering from her 8 year-old son's birthday party.
We had an obstacle course set up in the driveway, pizza, cake and chasing each other around with water guns. It looked like everyone had fun.
One more down, only 12 more to go. (I stop with the parties after they turn 11.) Number 2 son's last birthday party is in a couple of weeks, laser tag. They get to pick whatever they want for that last one.
I'm also just past the halfway point of being an elementary school parent. By the time the youngest gets to middle school I will have done 17 straight years of elementary school parenting. How many bake sales is that I wonder?
Perhaps I shouldn't count these things, but I do.
Another event of note: we're nearing 100 pages in the LTE! Will we be doing something special to commemorate the 100th page? :o ;)
BTW, DA, there's also an emoticon contest of sorts going on. Anyway, I think this started after you left for your vacation. The limit is 4 per post, 5 with one in the title. We're all trying to snag the title of the person with the most emoticons per post. See the excitement you've missed?! :D
:)
:(
... a post containing nothing but emoticons! That's one way to boost the old word/emoticon count. :o  ;)
:o
:D
:<)
:>(
wink
that's seven, on technicalities, I guess (oh, no, what have I started now)
100 pages is not a definitive goal, as it depends on user settings (how many posts per page is configurable.)
I vote for the duck.
For more REM lyrics, I was kind of disappointed to learn that "this one goes out to the one I love," instead of "to the one-eyed love."
Vacation was lovely -- sunny, warm, got some diving in (saw lots of moray eels, puffer fish, and little stingrays), took an ATV tour up into the mountains above Puerto Vallarta, found where I want to retire when I win the lottery -- yeah, it was a great week.
And now, which would you rather have -- a dull, low-grade headache, or an ingrown toenail?
I get dull, low grade headaches all the time. I find I can manage with them, so I'll take one of those. And a bump on the head.
'Are you sure you wouldn't rather have a poke in the eye?'
OK, taking it on topic but I don't feel like starting a new thread over in the scary EK forums. At the urging of another poster I went to InsideCarolina yesterday. I couldn't find the flight wings but I did find a schadenfreude post about all the Devil alums being out of the NBA playoffs. Then they started listing all the Heels who have won NBA Championships in the Coach K era as compare to the one lowly Danny Ferry on the Spurs win.
OK, 6 for MJ, that's impressive and I'll concede that statistic kind of trumps anything the Dukies have done in the NBA, but really MJ was one guy. Yeah, he went to Carolina but I suspect he would have been MJ no matter where he went.
Here's the lame stuff, they were bragging about Scott Williams(!), Sheed, and somebody else who I can't remember because, well, whoever they were, their NBA team sure didn't win because of them. Apparently Scott Williams was on some of those Jordan Bulls teams. Should they get to count those twice? Then there was a discussion of whether Hubert Davis should count because he rode the bench for a Pistons team although he was off the team before the playoffs. I mean really. It almost made me root for the Hornets (and Chris Paul) last night so I could post that although the Heels may be ahead of the Devils, the Deacons sure have owned them the past few years.
How many does Duncan have anyway? Is he rivaling MJ yet?
I say we get to count Kobe because he's said if he had gone to college, he would have gone to Duke. ;-)
Oooo, will this be the post to take it to page 100?
Darn, no, maybe this one will.
;):D:eek:
Oh, so that's how you get emoticons in the post. I'm not a Luddite. Just
I've decided I really want to start page 100.
Does this do it?
I must be getting close.
How about this one?
OK, here's one, if you lost a bet would you rather have to wear a TarHeels t-shirt or a Yankees t-shirt to work?
(If you don't hate the Yankees, insert the hated professional sports team of your choice.)
For me it's a no brainer. Nothing Carolina blue touches my body, ever.
Last try then I leave it for somebody else.
100!!!
OK - quick challenge: MASS kudos to the first person to post in Sanskrit!!!
I am posting this to get the thread's post count to 1980, thus marking the end of the carter administration.
But do we really want to relive the Reagan years? I'm not commenting on Reagan or any of his policies, simply that the Reagan years were the '80s. Please, please, please don't make me relive them again even in our fake little cyber-world here at DBR. Even getting to relive the Thatcher years isn't enough to make me willing to revisit the '80s.
Doing my part to get us out of the '80s. 1986 - wasn't that Louisville?
Who will get us to our National Championship year? :)
In 1987 I had my tenth birthday party and I still wasn't wearing Jams.
In the summer of 1988 (between Jr. and Sr. year of high school), I went to Cornell for the summer. There I met a fellow student whose dad was a doctor at Duke Hospital. And, this was after I already started being interested in Duke by watching the Duke vs. Danny Manning game in the spring. Thus, came my interest in and application to Duke!
And then, I entered Duke in fall of 1989.
Oops, forgot these
:o
I didn't get us to page 100 but I do get post
2000!!!
:)
One more so I can be National Champs too.
Sheesh-missed by 5. That's what I get for trying to work and post in the same minute. :o
work-"loosely" defined as performing a task for which one expects to be reasonably compensated financially within a relatively well-defined (and somewhat short) period of time: see also, employment ;):D. (that certainly has the potential to open up some lengthy discussions)
reasonably...hmmm, I thought the goal of seeking work was to find the person or organization that would most unreasonably(to the upside) compensate you for the least amount of effort. In other words, income maximization.
I just noticed that we hit 2000 posts on the 5 month anniversary of this thread!
colchar, I'm sure you have a life. Me? I have over 10% of the posts to this thread.
That's 13.3 posts a day to this thread.
Or a post for each of the original colonies of the United States.
I wonder if the technology were available back then, if the leaders would get together and demand that each colony post one time to this thread on a daily basis.
Also, I bet George Washington had some mad hops, and could dunk all over the round mound of rebound, Ben E. Frank.
Lastly, I'm convinced Bene Frank was an alien or was from the future. Dude was the Da Vinci (sp?) of his era, and scored with the chicks too!

Yeah, no kidding! :D I find this thread very Seinfeldian. It's essentially about nothing most of the time and yet we keep finding new nothings to talk about.
I freely admit that I hate my job primarily because of its unending boredom and concomitant hours-long opportunities to post stuff on the DBR. What's y'all's excuse?
I don't consider this thread an addiction. Rather a group of friends who periodically stop at the coffee shop and have conversations about nothing, to borrow from the pub analogy used often in reference to DBR.
A friend of mine sent an e-mail to me with the following content. I liked it, and wanted to share......because I, EarlJam, like you.
Take the phrase "mans laughter", which sounds pretty happy, then run it
together, and you get "manslaughter." That doesn't seem right to me.
Also, downstairs in our building, there's a door that says "emergency
exit." But underneath that, it says "This door must remain closed at ALL
times." So, if it's always closed, how do we get out?

I want to purchase a bicycle.
On the crossbar, I want to paint the name of the bike. I will name it "Vicious."
When people see me on my new bike, and ask me about it. I will look at them and say, "Yeah, my new bike. It's a vicious cycle."
Ha. Ha. Whew. Crap, I'm tired.

I have been reluctant to post at work. I have posted a couple of times using my cell phone but it is a bit too much work. So, I'm restricted to the early mornings and the after coming home from work and the time not taken up by the other residents of the household.
Does UGADevil post in/read this thread?
Someone totally went off on him on the EK board for him cheering on his UGA Mens tennis team. Lame. That someone clearly doesn't know our OT UgaDevil poster like we do...
I just created a photo album.

These are a few photos from Utah I brought into the office awhile back to share with a cow orker. I'll post more as time permits.
