The odometer on my 1997 Mazda truck stopped working years ago.

I’m at 1,683 miles in 4 months with my current vehicle and most of that was in the first month.
Let's get this party started?
Sure, but only if it's a "Back to the '80s" theme.

More songs I play when I feel like dancing around my living room.

I hadn't heard this song in years when my oldest was home on a break from college, we were in the car and this song came on the radio. I said, "If I didn't know better, I would swear that was 'Aztec Camera'." The song ends, DJ comes on, "You're listening to leftover lunch and that was 'Oblivious' by Aztec Camera."
Classic Mom Moment.

So get with it!

Okay, I don’t recall any of those songs. Other than the Eddie Murphy one. But that isn’t a great memory.
Well, I did listen to a lot of WXDU when I was a student. I went through some training to be a summer replacement DJ but I never actually got to go on the air. I did, however, win tickets to a Talking Heads concert from WXDU and it remains the best rock show I've even seen live.
But really - you don't know Marshall Crenshaw? I'm disappointed.
Stink bugs are such irritating little dummies
Man alive THAT was a thunderstorm last night. Tree limbs everywhere and all the patio furniture is off in the woods. Magnolia trees may be nice to look at but the leaves are a real pain to clean up.
This is not my idea of fun.
I remember this one:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/June...erican_derecho
That one hammered us - we lost power for the better part of a week. One of my neighbors came to get his small kids from their rooms to go to the basement. Just after leaving one room, a large branch speared his roof, went through his kid's bed, and on into the kitchen below.
My BiL in Paoli had a massive oak branch hit his house in Paoli, PA, this week. It didn't spear, but did crush his eave.
Last night, in the DC area, we had a solid storm, but not too bad. Nothing major came down. (There's this dead branch, probably 50' up, about 6" in diameter. Fortunately, it's between houses...)

Whither goest Cristobal?
Mowing the lawn and replacing sprinkler heads will be the highlight of my weekend. I know, too exciting.
Thoughts on managing a difficult neighbor?
Solution 1 is some new privacy bushes so we don't have to look at each other so much! :)
I broke the lawn mower trying to mow in between two rocks. I was 11 at the time, so I use that as my excuse. Also string trimmers weren't a thing at that time.
Wish I could say the same...I was 61 when I destroyed my mower blade on the metal stake. And, I DO own a string trimmer. (the metal stake was in the ground against the side of a building where I was mowing and I was too lazy to use the string trimmer to trim along the edge of the building, so I got a little too close with the lawn mower. Ugh).
Empire Strikes Back
I talked Mrs. Turk to get the clippers out cleaning up the mess around my ears a bit. I wanna decide what kind of mullet to rock; I am torn between Joshua Tree-era Bono or NHL scoring champ Penguins-era Jaromir Jagr? Any one else I should consider?
I just suggested that SonPK and I watch Brazil. I’m either a great parent or a terrible one.
Apparently I missed something in the Laughter is the best medicine thread.
Hah, must spread comments. Sorry about that, buddy, but I'm sure you do offer great life advice.

The middle movies in these trilogies are usually the best though, right? The Two Towers rocks. The Return of the King is great and won all the Oscars, but, it's still the wrap it up story, The Two Towers is better.
Yes, first time since I saw it originally in college.
I see that Terry Gilliam’s “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” is available to stream. Adam Drives, and personal fave Jonathan Pryce. I may have found my evening.
(Although I usually watch “The Longest Day” every D-Day, and that kind of eats up the movie-watching desire for one day).
They’re airing peloton races with famous athletes on ESPN. The NBA can’t get book soon enough...
I still haven’t watched the Boys from Brazil either.
Thrillers based on the exploits of former Nazis are out of fashion now. I don't remember seeing a new one in awhile.
Nazis are still kinda go to villains, but less so. I'm talking about the sub genre though of Nazis who never gave up the cause and are secretly plotting for years to do things that would bring Hitler back, that kind of stuff. There was one book that I don't think was ever made into a movie where a group had kept Hitler's frozen head. They were funding research to allow a transplantation to happen. Anybody else remember that book?
Sort of makes sense. Our popular culture US villains shifted from Nazis to Ruskies to islamic terrorists to potential existential threats like climate change, pandemics, and AI.
Aliens are always popular though. And clowns.
I actually wouldn’t mind seeing that info graphic. Movie/TV villain by type plotted over time to see how art imitates life.
First harvest of blueberries!
Diet Mountain Dew is my main choice for fizzy beverages. Is there something else I should consider?
Who knew I would be eager to see golf again with pro athletes other than golfers?
Trying out the meat grinder attachment for the Kitchenaid per recommendations here. Fresh-ground meatballs with herbs from the garden; homemade sauce and cavatelli; homemade garlic bread from scratch. Cheated and bought asparagus and prosciutto from the store though for a side.
Oh, and didn’t ferment my own wine. Next project when I retire.
Old Town Road is growing on me...
A Few Good Men on AMC.
You do lose out on some of the language.
The Quarantine Adventures of T-Bone and the Drewsk:
This week, the intrepid duo are enjoying a pizza lunch in a park when they are approached by a young man who needs to make a phone call. What to do? T-Bone punches in the number on his cell phone then puts the call onto speaker, just as the stranded stranger's roommate finally shows up. All is well. T-Bone is paid for his kindness with a Red Bull.
Tomorrow, T-Bone will be having an adventure without the Drewsk!
We've got quit a storm going on here right now. The thunder isn't too bad but it's the kind of hard rain that makes you worry about the basement flooding.
Bob Dylan - though I like Edie Brickell's cover more than Bob's version.
https://youtu.be/kgpF5VjWO34
Did I post that I am enjoying Space Force on Netflix? Supposedly the reviews aren't great. I don't care, I like it.
Seriously? Not trying to be a jerk, but Bob Dylan’s version — which is the original, of course — absolutely destroys this pale lightweight imitation by Edie Brickell. Bob Dylan’s song was pure genuine heartfelt artistic genius. It can’t ever be topped. It’s not possible.
There is always going to be a certain percentage of people who either don’t recognize or don’t appreciate (sometimes both) artistic genius.
Bob Dylan is the greatest singer-songwriter of all time. John Lennon is next. And Paul Simon is probably just behind those guys.
By the way, I like Edie Brickell and New Bohemians quite a lot. I still regularly listen to ‘Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars’ and ‘Ghost of a Dog’. I saw them in concert in Austin 30-ish years ago and it was a darn good show.
Springsteen is right up there near the top for me. His first four albums are magical, and the next five (through ‘Tunnel of Love’) are very close to that level.
I saw him in concert in Austin in 1988 and it’s still one of my favorites — 29 songs and over three hours. Spectacular. But, oh how I wish I had been old enough to see him in the early days. That must have really been something special.
Before it gets hot, I should:
A. Go for a walk on the river.
B. Go for a hike in the woods.
C. Put the kayak on the car and hit the river.
D. Who am I kidding? It’s already 75 degrees with 87% humidity. Go back to bed.
I have to go wake up my traveling companions.
When they gave the Nobel Prize in Literature to Bob Dylan, I realized that the Nobel Prize in Literature is a completely meaningless award. It's too late for Robertson Davies. I'm hoping Michael Ondaatje, although they did finally award a Canadian author, Alice Munro, so, kudos. Giving Ondaatje the prize will help bring me back into the fold of thinking that it is an award that matters. Maybe. The Dylan thing is a stain that will take awhile to wash away. Two American women have won the prize, Pearl Buck and Toni Morrison. No Edith Wharton or Alice Walker or Flannery O'Connor or Willa Cather or Paula Vogel, but, yeah, Bob Dylan. They'll probably give it to Sarah Ruhl someday just to spite me though.
The Nobels in some ways are like beauty contests. While a very different arena, car shows are clearly beauty contests. Those are what I have the most experience with. To the extent they don’t mean much to me Once I figured that out.
The Quarantine Adventures of T-Bone and the Drewsk.
T-Bone rides with his parents to the University of Vermont where they pack up his dorm room in record time. Arrival time at the dorm - 2:05. Departure time from the dorm 2:31. It would have been 2:28 except T-Bone forgot to drop off the room key and had to go back. Meanwhile The Drewsk took care of the youngest brother (who needs a nickname, his friends sometimes call him Sticks, let's go with that), meanwhile, The Drewsk was in charge of making sure Sticks had food and exercise. Panera Bread was involved as was a spirited game of H-O-R-S-E in the driveway. The round trip to Burlington and back took just under 10 hours.
Seems to me, they are just trying to drum up some business.
I need to find something new to read.
Maybe I should dig out my old Xbox?
Or I could build a new PC.
I need to downsize a car or two.
I think the two cars likely to go are the '68 Firebird convertible and the '70 GS455 convertible. The latter is a project and I just don't think I have the stomach for another one.
That will leave me with:
'68 Firebird coupe
'70 Buick Skylark Custom convertible
'71 Trans Am
I missed the NASCAR race today. I assume they are social distancing with their cars.
When I was in high school, The Monkees went through a bit of a revival. Whatever happened with them?
I replaced two sprinkler heads this morning. Tomorrow is my once a week watering day.
If only Bob Dylan had a voice like Chris Cornell:

Good morning, hope everyone is doing okay.
Interesting. I notice it is in the Broken Earth series. I'm aiming for a little more happy go lucky lately given the state of the news headlines, etc. Though in looking at what I've read lately it mostly centers around death and mayhem. As I've mentioned in other posts, I'm lamenting the "death" of the sitcom where you could count on some hijinks and laughs and less insight into the troubles of the world. I guess my '80s and '90s roots are showing.
Definitely not in the happy go lucky category.
How about Crazy Rich Asians? The movie is a RomCom, of course, but I started the book then put it down somewhere and my husband moved it and now I can't find it. I will eventually locate it and pick up where I left off. But, what I had read was not completely a "romance" novel. There was quite a bit of wry observation of life in Singapore that I was really enjoying.
Anyone else really not enjoying this day?
Well, instead of being 101 and 103 today and tomorrow, they've revised the forecast down to 99 and 99. I like that better but that is still too hot for me this time of year. It should be 90 or so.
I submitted my year-end student evaluations today, and now...what?
Michigan - Vandy in 2019 CWS. The grad school me is pleased.
Oh, and it is raining like a banshee right now.
Correct. Just summer heat and humidity doing its thing.
Ah, that’s different perhaps. Taoism/Buddhism/Hinduism is not really geared for determined destinations, unless the destination is enlightenment and harmony.
Which is nice. But maybe different and certainly non-material.
Interesting not intereating. Why doesn’t spellcheck help me out when it should?
Perhaps the wrong thread, but I did just watch Just Mercy.
Good morning everyone! Lots of high pressure meetings today.
Anyone use the Calm or Headspace apps or something similar?
The Quarantine Adventures of T-Bone and The Drewsk: Our adventurers set forth to visit a PetSmart in order to buy more Timothy Hay for the Pampered Duo - Cookie and Evie. The ongoing search for "Pumpkin", the pre-named but as yet unpurchased third guinea pig was unsuccessful as the only guinea pig at PetSmart was an adorable black head/white body male. He was left, sadly, alone in the store with hopes that another family will take him home soon.
Countdown to meeting time. No more looking at data and putting more facts in my back pocket.
Sigh, sitting in the virtual meeting room...
We were talking upthread about goals and the path to them. It reminded me of this quote from The Tao of Pooh (which I highly recommend):
Embrace the journey.Quote:
The Christmas presents once opened are Not So Much Fun as they were while we were in the process of examining, lifting, shaking, thinking about, and opening them. Three hundred sixty-five days later, we try again and find that the same thing has happened. Each time the goal is reached, it becomes Not So Much Fun, and we're off to reach the next one, then the next one, then the next.
That doesn't mean that the goals we have don't count. They do, mostly because they cause us to go through the process and it's the process that makes us wise, happy, or whatever. If we do things in the wrong sort of way, it makes us miserable, angry, confused, and things like that. The goal has to be right for us, and it has to be beneficial, in order to ensure a beneficial process. But aside from that, it's really the process that's important.
What would Christopher Robin think?
"Within each of us there is an Owl, a Rabbit, and Eeyore, and a Pooh. For too long, we have chosen the way of Owl and Rabbit. Now, like Eeyore, we complain about the results. But that accomplishes nothing. If we are smart, we will choose the way of Pooh. As if from far away, it calls us with the voice of a child's mind. It may be hard to hear at times, but it is important just the same, because without it, we will never find our way through the forest."
-- The Tao of Pooh
“Rabbit's clever," said Pooh thoughtfully.
"Yes," said Piglet, "Rabbit's clever."
"And he has Brain."
"Yes," said Piglet, "Rabbit has Brain."
There was a long silence.
"I suppose," said Pooh, "that that's why he never understands anything.”
-- The Tao of Pooh
That must have been an interesting read. I’ll see if it is available digitally.
Only $3.99 via B&N.
I read The Tao of Pooh a long time ago. Still one of my favorites.
The last few lines of my play All the Way to Wonderland
Joe: You will be disappointed.
Chet: I'm always disappointed. The places we go, the people we don't help, always disappointed. I don't expect not to be.
Joe: Good.
Chet: I am going to enjoy the journey though.
Joe: All right. All the way to Wonderland.
