Question: Does Kyrie claim Duke, ever talk to K, and ever get back to campus? Just wondering...
I do not know how you come to any conclusion on his impact on Duke basketball. To conclude that it is “clearly a net positive“ would require tangible objective evidence of his impact on Duke basketball.
I have not heard of any recruits saying “I came to Duke because of Kyrie Irving”. Nor have I heard any recruits say “I won’t come to Duke because of Kyrie Irving”. I have heard no Duke alumni tell me that they are giving greater donations because of Kyrie Irving. Nor have I heard any alumni say they will not give money because of Kyrie Irving.
He is a polarizing figure. Some on this board really like him. Others clearly do not. It is no different outside of this community.
So I am not sure how anyone can make a useful assessment has to his positive (or negative) impact on Duke basketball. Suffice to say – he’s no Grant Hill. But he’s also no Ted Bundy.
Several recent recruits have cited Irving as a favorite player when discussing Duke. I'd share the links, but embedding links is frustrating from mobile.
At any rate, I'm not saying that everyone is obligated to like Kyrie. I just don't understand the level of grief he gets on this board sometimes. Intelligent minds can disagree, of course. I just see him as an odd duck, but an odd duck that is an amazing basketball player and who seems to have earned respect among his peers while managing to do things a little, uh, differently.
Compare that to athletes that are in thr news for the wrong reasons, and a handful of confusing quotes seems a strange reason to write him off.
Thanks for the suggestion. My sister and her family live in Carroll Gardens so convenient.
That Nets Celtics game had a definite Duke/ACC feel. Tatum had 38. Kyrie not a bog scoring game but a near triple double with 9 rebounds and 11 assists with 15 points, active hands with 4 steals. Jabari and Semi. Joe Harris with 20. Bruce Brown had 15. Brown is a real spark for the Nets, and Harris has become a really good NBA player. 48.3% from 3? That's ridiculous.
Just wondering if anybody remembers that this thread was started to discuss Coleman's transfer. I do appreciate seeing a Sandy Koufax reference these days ... but that is definitely more than six degrees off.
I hear you. Kyrie is clearly no dummy. Of that I am sure. And I respect what you are saying, everyone has a different view
What his peers actually think of him - that is very hard to know. I have partners in my office who are in very senior positions including firm management. One might perceive that to be a reflection on approval by peers. But that is not necessarily the case. In some instances, they are not well liked – but that has not prevented their ascension and their power. And like many organizations, criticism of them is very muted for obvious reasons.
Ultimately, not everyone has to be liked by everyone. And everyone will have different opinions and views. And that is what makes the world go round.
Well, like I said - there is more nuance than sometimes is obvious. But you may be right – he may be loved by his peers. Or maybe not. Unfortunately, you and I do not have the ears of NBA players to get their view. But keep in mind, the President of the United States got elected by the people of the United States. But he is not loved by everyone. So whereas some peers may respect Kyrie – just like people on his board like him - others may not respect him.
I guess we do not need to beat this horse dead - the point is, some people like the guy, others do not. And that is entirely fine.
Just a datum on the Brotherhood discussion. In the Chronicle article on Banchero and Keel’s efforts to recruit Baldwin, it quotes Trevor as saying the following on Instragam live:
"Why don't you wanna come win? That's my thing. [Baldwin is] a phenomenal player so why don't you just come join the [Duke] Brotherhood and get these wins cause we definitely gonna win," Keels said on his Instagram live in reference to his recruiting pitch to Baldwin.
It would seem to be a concept with meaning for at least one recruit. The article does also remind at least me that our recruits start building relationships before they get on campus, so even OADs may identify themselves with their teammates and the coaches and even with Duke longer than the 10 month season.
I don’t care for Kyrie because he seems to be more about Kylie than team” or winning but mostly I’m indifferent because I don’t watch NBA. As far as his short Duke tenure, the team was better after he went down with Nolan running the show IMO. But I don’t wast a lot of time thinking about Kyrie Irving and I’m fully aware that he’s not bothered in the least by my opinion .
Admittedly I am not the best on this board in pulling information. But this is fairly easy.
Sandy Koufax:
1. Played 12 seasons in major leagues.
2. 7 time all star.
3. 4 time World Series champion (spanning 1955 to 1965).
4. Youngest entrant in the Hall of Fame.
5. Considered one of the greatest of all time.
Kyrie Irving:
1. Played 11 games at Duke. Not one game played against ACC opponent. Did not play in ACC tournament. Duke did not advance to FF (sadly).
2. Had 3 games scoring over 20 points.
3. 17.5 ppg
4. 4.3 ppg
We all can have our opinions. But facts do not lie.
Kyrie showed flashes of excellence while playing in this 11 games at Duke. But he was no Carmelo Anthony. And the analogy to Sandy Koufax simply does not work.
^ yeah, Koufax's career was shorter than it should have been, but it wasn't THAT short...by the way, Sandy was a regular visitor to the ACC hoop tournament, saw him many times there.
I believe Koufax was a two sport athlete at the University of Cincinnati, too. Think he played a season of college basketball on the freshman team there in addition to college baseball.
Very Dick Groat like of him.
