By the way, the bunt single w./the bases loaded and 2 outs was a thing of beauty.
ND 2 run HR ties it in the 6th.
Headed to extra innings 4-4.
ND has gotten deep into our pen - not good.
Dockman pithing in the 11th.
Going to the 12th. We need to win it right here.
Final: Notre Dame 6, Duke 4.
Walk off 2 run HR for ND against Dockman.
Today’s game starts at 2 pm with coverage on ACCNX and radio.
Henry Williams (2-0) will be on the mound for Duke this afternoon.
Henry is pitching very well. Unfortunately, our offense is again failing to get the big hit, leaving runners in soring position every inning. 0-0 in the fourth.
Notre Dame takes a 1-0 lead in the 4th. Double, balk advances runner to 3rd, sacrifice fly.
The ND 1st baseman, who has killed us this series, hit a sac fly for a 1-0 ND lead in the 4th.
Duke takes a 2-1 lead as R.J. Schreck homers.
Wheels coming off in the 6th as Notre Dame has scored five runs to lead 6-2 with nobody out.
I hate to say it, but it is becoming pretty obvious this Duke team just doesn't have it this year. We are about to have a losing record and we haven't even hit the tough part of our schedule. I'm certainly not giving up all hope. Go Devils. Prove me wrong.
Notre Dame really goes overboard on celebrating their successes. Pretty irritating.
Final: Notre Dame 6, Duke 2.
R.J. Schreck picked off at 2nd base to end the game.
We just don't have enough pitching, especially the relievers. :(http://www.crazietalk.net/ourhouse/i...es/devil9f.gif
Duke has added a non-conference game on Tuesday against UNCG. https://goduke.com/sports/baseball/schedule
I don't think it bodes well for any makeup games against NCSU.
Interesting RPI note: Duke is ranked fourth (#22) among ACC teams. The top 3 are Pitt (#3), ND (#9), and BC (#18). ECU is also ranked (#5).
Duke takes a early 2-0 lead over ND in game 3. We go to the 4th.
Today’s game is on ACCN. I’m switching back and forth between baseball and basketball to ensure I miss all the key plays in both games.
Duke turns a major leasgue double play to end the 5th up 2-0. Jack Carey pitching like an ace.
Jack Carey with 6 innings of shutout 1 hit ball. Marcus Johnson in to pitch the 7th.
Headed to the 9th with Duke up 2-0. An insurance run or two would be nice.
That’s a Blue Devil winner!
Boy did we need that. Outstanding pitching and error free defense.
This was Coach Pollard's 100th ACC win. Congrats Coach!
Next up for the Blue Devil nine is UNC Greensboro on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Jack Coombs Field. Duke is now 8-8, 4-5 in the ACC.
For those of you who don't read the front page.

Duke leads UNCG 3-2 in the fourth. UNCG is 11-8 and has wins over NC State and #13 Virginia Tech in Tuesday affairs.
Headed to the ninth inning, Duke up 5 - 2.
Duke wins, 5-2. UNC-G has given ACC teams troubles this year, particularly pitching staffs. Big series with GT this weekend.
Back over ,500 again at 9-8.
Baseball hosts Georgia Tech this weekend. Tonight and Saturday night start at 7 pm with television coverage on ACCN. Sunday afternoon starts at 1 pm and is on ACCNX.
Stinson pulled before the start of 2nd inning. Perhaps a shoulder issue.
He was lucky to get out of the inning without a run scored... bases loaded with 2 walks, 1 hit by pitch... but three strikouts.
Update on Stinson is middle back tightness. Currently dealing with a bank of lights that are out.
Back to back bone crushing solo GT home runs. Second one showed up as an appetizer for the folks eating in the upper deck restaurant tables.
Our pitching needs help.
GT's third baseman just needs to turn pro yesterday.
Coach Pollard post game:
https://goduke.com/watch/?Archive=11006&type=Archive
Says Cooper Stinson was removed from the game out of an abundance of caution.
I nipped in and out of the game several times, and every time I saw a batter get plunked...was it Bad Aim Night at the ballpark?
Duke lost 3-0 yesterday. Put runners in scoring position multiple times but couldn’t advance them. Henry Williams was solid. Duke will try to avoid being swept today at 1 pm. Coverage on ACCNX and radio.
Today’s game start moved forward to 11 am due to weather.
Our Live RPI is dropping pretty rapidly with the GT series. It's starting to look like we overscheduled a bit with the extra ACC series and surprise results from Pitt, BC, and ND. While I think +4 overall record and .400 in the ACC is probably enough to get the last bid, that is obviously a moving target. We need to turn things around pretty quickly.
NCSU is currently the worst team in the ACC by record. Losing that series off the schedule really hurt.
Jack Carey is on the mound for the Devils, and looked really sharp. The Devils are facing yet another lefty starter. Coach has dramatically shuffled the lineup in an effort to spark our offense. 0-0 after one.
Peter Matt homers in B3 to cut the GT lead to 3-2.
Duke takes a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd and then immediately gives up the lead in the top of the 3rd letting 3 runs score, the last on a wild pitch with 2 outs.
Crabtree homers to make it 3-3. Back to back solo home runs.
Crabtree goes back to back. 3-3.
Marcus Johnson in to pitch for Duke in T4. Bases loaded with nobody out.
Lead cut to 8-7 when two runs score on a throwing error by Marcus Johnson. Jimmy Loper coming in to pitch.
I was listening on TuneIn while mowing my lawn and wouldn't be surprised if they heard me all the way at the DBAP when that happened. My fault, was following on the @DukeBase twitter feed, saw they were up, and tuned in.
Next inning the leadoff batter had 3-1 count against a new GT pitcher and swung - why does he have the green light there?
OK to leave it positive - watched a bit last night on the ACC network and was impressed with Henry Williams. Great pitch mix and command, reminded me of a young Bryce Jarvis. Hoping he can continue to develop.
Just checked the live box score and looks like Loper got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the 8th - 9-7 Duke in the bottom of the 8th.
That’s a Blue Devil winner! Duke back to .500 at 10-10 with a 9-7 win over Georgia Tech.
Loper comes in and does his job. Rothenberg HR extended the lead for the final margin.
Much needed win over a top 15 team. Duke is now 5-7n in the ACC with a lot of work to do.
Big shout of thanks to both Bob and Chris for their updates. I wasn't able to watch today, so your posts were most welcome.
Our team has to capitalize and get its head together again. Impressive preseason predictions, but so far not as advertised. Pollard is awesome. Hope we can build. Go Duke!
My son only played at DII, but in baseball it’s all about pitching. Three games every weekend, plus mid week. You need a lot of pitching, and sometimes you’re “lesser” mid week pitchers have to step up on the weekend. Need a lot of arms...
Duke next hosts Liberty Tuesday at 4pm. The Flames are 16-6 and have a 3-0 record against ACC teams with a win over Virginia and two wins over UNC.
Freshman left hander Luke Fox is on the mound for the Devils today.
Duke takes a 1-0 lead on a leadoff HR by Loperfido. Crabtree adds a 2 run shot for a 3-0 lead.
End of 2nd inning, Duke 4-0.
Liberty scores 2 and knocks out our starter in the 3rd. Allen in to pitch
Still 4-2 after 5.
Dockman in to pitch the 6th. It's all hands on deck.
By the way, this Liberty team is 13-1 in the month of March.
At the 7th inning stretch, Duke up 4-3.
We need some runs!
A Chris Crabtree sac fly gives the devils a 5-3 lead heading into the 8th.
Johnson on to pitch the 8th and gives up a HR. It's a one run game again. 5-4.
Lopper, our 7th pitcher, in to try to close it out.
Duke survives 5-4.
Whew. Great win! We really needed this one,
Huge series this weekend @Miami where we have not played well historically. Two night games and a Sunday nooner.
Here are the current Coastal standings. We have a lot of work to do.
COASTAL
Georgia Tech 11-5 0.667
Virginia Tech 9-7 0.591
Pitt 8-7 0.600
North Carolina 8-7 0.565
Miami 7-7 0.619
Duke 5-7 0.524
Virginia 4-12 0.440
Miami leads 2-0 after 4. Duke had the bases loaded in the 3rd but our best hitter hit into an inning ending double play.
A Will Hoyle sharp rbi single in the 5th cuts the Miami lead in half, 2-1.
That's a Blue Devil loser, 3-1 Miami.
Henry Williams on the mound for Duke tonight.
Miami up 5-0 in the 2nd. Not the start were looking for.
Henry might be taking one for the pen for tomorrow's game. It's 8-0 Miami in the 2nd.
Loperfido grand slam. Miami leads 9-4.
Final was Miami by 11-5 score. All of the pieces have to come together pretty soon.
In T5, Duke takes a 1-0 lead on Miami. Cheek drives in Rothenberg with a double.
B7: Miami 3, Duke 1. Marcus Johnson pitching for Duke now. I was out running an errand so I don’t know how Miami scored.
Miami completes the sweep with a 7-1 win.
"Hampton Inn, Omaha, how may I help you?"
"Umm, how do I go about canceling a reservation?"
Ouch - but the truth hurts I guess. This team hasn't shown any flashes of post-season since the opening series. Right now they aren't making the ACC tournament. Hard to say what happened - but pitching has hurt them a lot, as has lack of timely hitting. I listened to almost the entire game today. Too many stranded runners and the bullpen imploded.
I guess that's what we get for calling Duke a baseball school.
We would be tied for the last slot with NCSU right now. I'm not sure how the tiebreaker goes there, but it's too early to worry about it. It's really concerning we lost a series to last place BC.
To have a competitive NCAA RPI (35 or better), we probably need about a +4 or +5 overall record, .400+ ACC record, and a strong finish. There's a lot of basketball season flashbacks at this point. We probably have to win all but 1-2 of our remaining series.
Billy Seidl on the mound for Duke against NCCU. It is his first career start.
At the end of three innings, Duke leads 2-1.
Duke expands the lead to 8-1 in the 4th. Eagles changing pitchers for the second time this inning.
10-6 now, bottom of the 7th.
12-6 after 7.
It's in Charlotte this year, ticket books on sale. I saw this tweeted by Duke Baseball, and it got me thinking - do we make the tourney?
The current rules that went into effect in 2016 expanded from 10-12 teams, with this format for eligiblity:
Currently BC is last with a 4-11 ACC record (0.267); Duke (5-11) is tied with NC State (5-11) and UVa (6-12) at 0.333 and just behind Wake (5-9) at 0.357.Quote:
The top team from both the Atlantic and Coastal divisions, determined by conference winning percentage, and the next 10 teams with the best conference winning percentage regardless of division will be selected to participate in the championship
Our remaining ACC schedule has series against UNC, Wake, UVa, Louisville, Va Tech, and Clemson. Louisville and VT lead their divisions, UNC (9-9) is at 0.500, Clemson (8-7) is at 0.533
A lot of things that have gone poorly for our Devils this season need to turn around for us to make that 10th slot. Not giving up hope yet, but what will spur timely hitting, solid D, and most importantly consistent pitching (esp from our bullpen)?
Let’s Go Duke! Beat Carolina!!
Duke 1, Carolina 0. Peter Matt with the RBI.
2-0 Duke. Hoyle with a successful squeeze bunt.
Weather delay in Chapel Hill.
I hope Cooper Stinson can return. It doesn't look like more than a spotty thunderstorm.
Game 1 has been suspended until noon Saturday. With another inclement weather forecast, it's going to be hard to get all 3 games in. Good news is that travel rules don't apply unless we flew into RDU or Horace Williams airport. Source: Duke Baseball twitter
Per Goduke, the UNC series has a new schedule: https://goduke.com/news/2021/4/9/bas...-adjusted.aspx
Sat - finish game 1 at noon.
Sun -same
Game 3 is now Monday at 6 PM.
No word on whether we have changed the Campbell game on Tuesday.
Friday nights suspended game has recommenced. Duke batting in T3.
Henry Williams pitching for Duke. Still 2-0 Duke in B4.
Peter Matt hits a 2-run homer to increase the lead to 4-0.
Through six complete innings, Duke 4, Carolina 0.
Marcus Johnson in to pitch in B8. Top of the order batting for Carolina.
That’s a Blue Devil winner. Duke 4, Carolina 2.
Game 2 against Carolina is underway on ACCN.
Duke is now back at .500 overall and 6-10 in the ACC after yesterday's win.
Ethan Murray drives the ball off the right-centerfield wall and Peter Matt scores from 1st base to give Duke a 1-0 lead.
Chad Knight makes it 2-0 with a RBI single. Headed to B2.
Chad Knight blasts an rbi sinle to drive home Murray. Carey, our normal Sunday pitcher, is looking sharp so far,
Through four complete innings, Duke leads 3-2.
The heels tie it up at 2. Carey kept getting behind hitters and the heels made him pay. Duke came back to take a 3-2 lead and had a second run thrown out at the plate.
5-5 after five. The heels tie it with an rbi groundout and a 2 run bomb. Dockman in to pitch the 6th for Duke.
Heels take a 8-5 lead off of Loper in the 8th.
Loper faced four batters, gave up three hits and three runs: hit batter, RBI double, 2-run homer, single.
Final: Carolina 11, Duke 5.
Bullpen gave up six runs.
Duke is now 13-14, 6-11 in the ACC.
As I was saying, regarding the ACC tourney - among other things the bullpen hasn't been great. Not great today, Bob.
https://images.app.goo.gl/P7sFdR84i1i3cTcb8
Duke scores twice in T1 to take a 2-0 lead. Cooper Stinson on the mound for Duke tonight.
18-6 now. This team just doesn't have it.
21-6 😡
U-g-l-y 21-8 final. Couple of Duke solo shots don't take the smell outta that stinker.
Not looking great for *any* postseason baseball
While Duke baseball having a post season is a new thing, I think it's fair to say that many of us were at least expecting to be in the ACC tourney.
Bad year at Duke for post season play in general, with nothing happening for MBB, DWBB and football. Bleah. I wonder when the last time it was that all of those major sports stayed home?
Certainly from 1972 until 1978, when America's team, Banks, Dennard, Spanarkel, Gminski and Harrell shocked America with their run to the Championship game vs. Ky. http://www.crazietalk.net/ourhouse/i...es/devil9f.gif
82-83 season. Easy to recall that since neither Football or Baseball did the post season thing forever it seemed. 94-95 b-ball didn’t, but Goldsmith first year football bowled.
If you also include women’s b-ball as a top 4 sport; I don’t ever remember all 4 top 4 sports falling so far below expectations in a school year.
The women's golf team is looking good.
Campbell and Duke tied at 2 in the bottom of the 4th.
Duke erupts for 8 runs in the 4th and leads 10-2.
Final score 14-7 with a season-high 15 hits. Cheek and Murray each with three hits. Relief pitching is still an issue but the game was never in doubt.
There's still a chance we can build a profile of a NCAA Tournament team, but I think we have to win 4 of the last 5 ACC series, a very tall order. 3 + winning our ACC pod is pushing it.
This weekend against Wake really is the turning point for our season. Wake is 1/2 game behind us for the last ACC Tournament spot. My notes may be wrong, but I think we have not won a baseball series against Wake in Durham since 1994. You might remember that year because Grant Hill lead us to the Final 4 at the end of our 7/9 F4 run.
We really need 2 great starts + some timely hitting.
After one complete inning, Duke 0, Wake 0. Brereton on the mound for Duke.
Why no Cooper? Josh Allen comes in w/ 2 on, one out in the 2nd.
Through four complete innings, still 0-0.
Cooper was moved to Sunday after the Monday start. Tonight was supposed to be Henry Williams, but he's apparently injured. Hence, Johnny Allstaff tonight.
I hope Henry gets well quickly.
I'm looking forward to Luke Fox as a starter next year.
Wake takes a 1-0 lead. Throwing error on Ethan Murray.
4-0 Wake after a HR.
Our team has apparently thrown in the towel. We have lost our last 2 ACC games by a combined score of 32-8.
With the score still tied at 0-0 Duke hades runners on first and second with one out and Peter Matt at the plate. Our guy at 2nd fell asleep and got picked off by the WF pitcher. Then unbelievably with Matt still batting, our man on 1st got picked off, inning over. It was like watching our football team this past year.
Duke jumps out to a 2-0 lead over WF in the first.
Duke carries as 4-1 lead into the bottom of the third. Carey pitching well.
A Rothenberg three run dinger in the 4th gives the Devils an 8-1 lead.
11-2 in the 8th.
I'm glad to see us fight back today. RJ Schreck was the MOTM for me as that catch killed any momentum Wake had.
Since the comparison would be known by all, I compare tomorrow's game to the 2021 @GT basketball game we lost. We need the series win against Wake if we're going to have the chance to make a run in the ACC Tournament. I'm glad Cooper should start.
Duke up 3-0 still batting in B1 with one out and a runner on 2nd base.
T6: Duke 7, Wake Forest 6.
Duke was up 5-0, I went out in the backyard to cut some grass and came back to a completely different game.
B8: Duke up 11-7 after Peter Matt's 2nd HR. Hope the "first team to 11 wins" trend holds.
That's a Blue Devil winner! Duke 11, Wake Forest 7. Duke wins the series 2-1. A much needed series win.
We have 1.5 game lead over Wake for the last spot in the ACC Tournament. It's huge for getting us a bid, but there are lots of hurdles yet. A winning week in the Commonwealth and healthy Henry Williams would be nice.
Duke is now back to .500 overall 16-16 and 8-13 in the ACC. Virginia and Clemson have just 9 ACC wins and we have series upcoming with both. NC State also has 9 ACC wins so we obviously have an opportunity to move up. First we play at Liberty Tuesday night. Earlier we beat Liberty 5-4 in a home game.
Weird, I am seeing Duke's record at 8-14, 17-17 here: https://theacc.com/standings.aspx?path=baseball
Do-able but an uphill battle. Clemson and NC State have fewer losses (12 vs 14 not 13) and we have series against both VT and Louisville, Coastal and Atlantic leaders, respectively. Have to win the winnable series and hope to grab a win against either of the powerhouses. Any chance we'll make up our postponed series with NC State?
Speaking of winnable series, we really blew it against worst-in-the-ACC BC, huh? Bet coach wishes he could have had that one back.
I saw that too on the ACC site but it is wrong. Every ACC series is three games - Duke has played seven series, that's 21 total ACC games - not 22. The GoDuke site is correct. https://goduke.com/sports/baseball/scheduleQuote:

We are the only ACC team to beat Liberty this year. It's the last big non-conference test that we have; the May games should be all wins.
My biggest concern with our resume at this point is the 2-5 record in ACC series because we aren't on the bubble until it gets closer to 0.500.
After two innings it's scoreless at Liberty.
Still 0-0 after 4. Kudos to Nifong for battling back out of a jam to keep it that way.
Schreck HR. Duke leads 3-0.
RJ Schreck hits a 3 run homer in the 6th. 3-0 Duke. He fought back from a 1-2 count, got it to 3-2, then hit his blast over the left field fence. Now let's see our bullpen can close it out.
Dockman gets us to the 8th with our 3-0 lead intact. Is it Marcus Johnson time?
